The man on the lespaul, has the best solo cover of this song, I've EVER heard. I am an old Allman Bros follower, since 1971, have every thing they've ever put out, & seen em live, so many times I ve lost count. This whole band was Xcelkent!!!
I was at this concert and this number was distinctly the highlight of the evening. Gregg Allman had died some months previous to this and each act played a tribute song to the Allman Brothers.
Amanda is amazing. She killed it just like Jason always does. What a freaking pair....such talent, can't wait to see what their little girl grows up to be.
Lynna Martinez I know, right? And think of all the great artists that she’s going to encounter via her mom and dad. Jason tweeted a year or so ago something like “When I was a baby, I’d lie on a blanket on the floor while my mom listened to John Prine. Right now I’m watching my baby daughter bounce on John Prine’s knee.”
Spenser Dalton considering Duane died in ‘71 and your comment about the tones being similar, I’m gonna have to go ahead and say you are talking out of your ass
He's really matured in his aesthetic... He looks just as badass as he always was now... I think Amanda Shires had a lot to do with it tbh. Married to a talented babe like her would improve anyone's look
They did this song as the last of the encore songs when they played at the St. Augustine Ampitheater back on July 22. Just like in this version, Jason and the 400 Unit totally kicked ass on this song--I have seen different iterations of the ABB do this song dating back to the late 1970s, and along with In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, and a few other cuts from Live at Filmore East---an album I think is one of the best ever recorded albums in rock history, Jason and the band are doing an incredible job in recreating the feeling that listening to the ABB do it has given me since I was a kid. The show in St. Augustine was a great show from the moment it started to the end of this song---that was my third time seeing him do a show going back to when he toured on the release of Southeastern. He sure is on top of his game and even more important, clearly on top of his life with sobriety, finding the love of a great partner and now being a daddy---we should all be so fortunate to find all the things Jason so deservedly has found now: stability, peace, the love of a great woman, doing good work and getting deserved satisfaction from it. I think I can make a prediction that should come to pass---we have yet to see the best of Jason Isbell's work coming in the future...
Michael Garrity I'm not gay but can I hug you? Superior words about Jason and the 400 unit!. This was about the band with a bit of Jason. Showcasing the band. Thanks for a great scene in the greatness of Isbell and fans like me.
Just when I think that I can't be amazed anymore by his work, I'm amazed again ! Best thing to ever happen was for DBT to release him from the band he doe's better by just being himself.
He and his crew make real, authentic music that touches the deepest parts of who we are. I am forever changed having heard Jason Isbell and the 400 unit!
Somewhere in the universe Duane is smiling at Amanda’s fiddle playing on Whipping Post. He’d be like “Damn it I thought of two drummers, two lead guitars - why didn’t I think of a beautiful woman playing badass fiddle?”
The guy writes great songs himself, but, I was a teen in Georgia when the Allmans started getting somewhere so this is really sweet.. Jason and the band do a bad ass job on covers. Got to see him about 18 months ago. Great show.
Thank you Mr.Isbell for you fine entertainment. This is one of my favorite Allman Brothers songs. Well all there songs are my favorite just can't get enough of that Betts sound .
I've seen a few people try to capture this with cell phone recordings, but thank FSM someone was able to put this up with some production value. My new favorite playing my younger self's favorite!
Stellar! Kept to the original just enough - but tailored to these great artists. I've never seen Jason tear it up like that before. And Amanda's solo: She owned the place!! Does it turn out that "whipping post" made for a fiddle solo and nobody knew?
Go out and get the Allman Brothers band Live at the Fillmore East. This is just one track. The band was into John Coltrane so this is Jazz Fusion with the Blues. Duane Allman and Dickey Betts were great.
Isbell played it a PNC Pavilion here in Cincinnati and it absolutely crushed. I've seen him do quite a few covers live and this one was hands down the best.
Wow! Goosebumps! Duane, Dickie, Gregg, Berry, Jai Johanny, and Butch would approve. It takes balls and serious chops to cover sacred music like this. Thanks Jason & the 400 unit. And Wail On Skydog.
Wow they put their own stamp on an iconic song while still being true to the Allmans. Good on them! That vocal by Jason is absolutely amazing. There never was and never will be a vocalist with the rock, soul, grit and emotion of Gregg Allman but Jason obviously has been somewhat influenced and it shows. Great tribute by all on that stage.
There was a strict "no photos/videos" policy (as usual for Jason) and I was on the rail right up front and the security guard in front of me was low key filming this song over his shoulder. Tore the roof off for sure.
and to think we had a chance to see this awesome man and the band last night but my we already had plans for my wife's birthday (she hasn't been exposed to Jason yet so she doesn't know just how special this guy is so it means we have to catch him at a later date somewhere else) ......I believe he is in Madison tonight which is 4-5 hours from my place ...if I can convince her. I just got turned onto this guy earlier in the week and like so many of you I am absolutely blown away by his music.....and this is one of the best covers of this classic tune that I have ever heard.

Hot damn. Love to see these guys playing AB. This is SOME band. Love their stuff and do unbelievable covers! Jason calls out shitty songs and record labels for pushing drivel but you see his love of really good music.
That was worthy. You can end up looking like fools trying to cover that song, but they were totally up to the task and then some. They went there and brought it home.
"Enjoy the rest of the evening" he says at the end - I wouldn't want be anyone following that!
fantastic!
In all fairness it was Bob Dylan then Willis Nelson following that

Who else comes back to this vidya constantly?!? Ugh!! Guitars 🎸 alone! Absofuckinglutely killed the solos!
Sadler brought it hard. Playing is stellar and tone is spot on.
He is such a talented song writer that people forget he is a great guitarist as well.
john pollock Very good point.
Until you see him live. Then you'll never forget it.
Freaking amazing at both
And Sadler ain’t no slouch. That solo he played about 5 minutes in was killer.
Man, this is a killer cover. That kid on the Les Paul is awesome.
Sadler Vaden
Sasdler Vaden is the shit.
I believe his given name is Sadler F¥ing Vaden.
By the time you get to own a Paul, you've gotta be pretty good player.

Sadler Vaden for the win.
Yea his lead player can really rip. It is not the best I have ever heard on this song. But he is burning the house down......
Nice job but check out Dickey Betts solo from Woodstock in 94
I agree, he did a really nice solo.
Looks like ed kings red eye gutiar to me?
I was at this concert and this number was distinctly the highlight of the evening. Gregg Allman had died some months previous to this and each act played a tribute song to the Allman Brothers.
Oh my God!!! I’m a massive Allman Brothers fan. This is amazing. (Can’t say “cover”) wow!! Gary Allman would be proud!),
Jason and these cats just kill this. Amanda plays that fiddle like nobody's business. Just absolutely incredible.
Cleanest version of this song that exists. They did this one justice. Allmans and Co. are smiling down on them.
100%!!!
Dudes... i’ve watched this video at least 2000 times. JI4U are the best band in 15 years. I love this band as much as my oldest dog.
I love your dog too!!

Ok, 4 years late. Amazing cover and awesome talent by all. I’m a huge Allman Brothers fan. I appreciate this so much!
Thank you. I'm there in Sydney.
My god damn man. I got goose bumps and I ain't easy to impress.
I was at their show in Omaha when they played this and I lost it. It was incredible.
Dude does it true but plays it with his own vibe. So great that he doesn't play it too fast - Love this version
Good Lord. I saw the Allman Brothers play this live, you guys killed it!! Amazing.
Wow! I love that they play it properly at a slower tempo. So much soul. So great. Great guitar work, great vocals. Love this!
Honestly that first solo with the Les Paul is Duane tone. Obviously the style is different, but that tone sounds right out of 1972.
Spenser Dalton considering Duane died in ‘71 and your comment about the tones being similar, I’m gonna have to go ahead and say you are talking out of your ass
