I agree! I love that the representation of vegan diets is so much more varied on social media. And I don't have to feel bad when I want to share a recipe that's not "clean-eating" approved.
@@SarahsVeganKitchen that 'clean eating' thing is far too much and makes you develop eating disorders. I can remember myself getting trapped into this too, creating anxiety over eating out and stressing too much. Glad it's loosing it's prevalence:)

Oil actually has a dual purpose when used in cooking, yes it helps with texture in some instances but also aids in the absorption of vital nutrients. Many veggies have fat-soluble vitamins ie fat needs to be present in the meal for those vitamins to be absorbed so its definitely better that you moved away from fearing fat (your body thanks you for it!).
i still skip oil in favor of nuts, seeds, avocado, other fatty foods. I'm not against oil and actually cook with it pretty often, but there are healthier alternatives if you're looking to just add fat into your meals
@@stephaniesantos78 Oh I know there are other fat sources that are an alternative to oil, I just find a lot of people who follow the 80/10/10 lifestyle fear even the unprocessed forms of fat (like eating some avocado, nut-butters, or seeds)Sarah is not one of them which is refreshing, she spreads a better message about eating in a balanced way. I’ve been on the Starch solution for six years. I don’t find it restrictive at all. I am more than satisfied on this diet. Zero desire to change. But glad you found what works for you.
It's not that you were too peppy back then, that's when I found you, I've continued to follow and learn from you because you've experienced life and continue to grow and have life changes; been unafraid to share with your followers and express your thoughts and feelings; and so many can relate to you because you are so very down to earth. It’s so interesting seeing how you changed so much. This also proves that nothing works the same for all of us. I’m the exact opposite of you. That's so awesome that you've found a way of eating that works for you! I agree, it's so important to know that while we can take pointers from other people, ultimately we will each have to figure out what works best with our bodies. In China and Vietnam, (where I currently live-American expat), lunch break is typically two hours. It is encouraged and part of the culture to take a nap after lunch. I love this practice to help with digestion...part of TCM/TVM, traditional Vietnamese medicine and Chinese medicine. They are pretty habituated to eating and sleep times, as well.
I’m so happy your diet has changed since then. it’s freeing for the mind to finally allow yourself the deliciousness of avocado, nuts, seeds, and so much more! Glad you’re doing a lot better💖💖
Yes ! I would love to see more re-creation of your old what I eat in a day, but with the twist of updating the recipes with how you would do it nowadays ! 😍
Genius video idea! Loved it! Balanced vegan diet for the win. I always felt terrible trying the high carb diet. I would be starving just and hour after stuffing my face
can relate to this so much lol. I went to the Thai Fruit Festival in like 2015 and I remember feeling so guilty that I wanted to eat junk food at restaurants and everyone was sooo "healthy" cycling everywhere and eating plain rice noodles. HAH facepalm. anyways, i'm just waiting for my kroger french toast sticks to heat up rn.
Can you and Eric react to your old videos together, including the ones that you two filmed together? I love you Sarah, keep the wonderful content coming!
My diet story: I went keto before becoming vegan and didn't lose a single pound. I stopped being low carb and focused on eating regularly in smaller portions and went down to my lowest weight ever.
@@MyLifeInWonderland it actually does WORK for people who stick to their macros correctly. It may not BE for everyone bc some people just love carbs and sugar and can't stay away from them, but it most certainly WILL cause weight loss along with other health benefits if done correctly. Facts.
Yes so funny to hear you in your old video and seeing your current ones. I feel like you've definitely come into your own and are more comfortable in your own skin and just who you are in general. 💕👏🏻
It’s so sad how this reflects my relationship with veganism and how i was so influenced by all the vegan influencers. I suffer/suffered from disorder eating and was absolutely convinced that vegansim would cure my eating disorder and that I could not eat any calories from fat. No matter how many carbs I ate I was never satiated. Ultimately veganism was only furthering my orthorexia, binge eating, and restriction, so I had to quit despite my desire to stick with it. I wish I had been introduced to the healthy outlook on veganism that is more prominent now.
try mashing a super ripe banana, vanilla , cinnamon, 30g quick oats (pure, not the sugared sachet) and add water to cook - i add a lot cuz i like mine soupy too) and cook on stove , soooo yum the banana sweetens it nicely and makes it substantial
Love love love this video! Too many vegan you tubers are so wrapped up in weight loss and how skinny they can be instead of what is the best way to live longer and be healthy. Thank you for the honesty and being real!! And that’s what she said ! 😉
i wish you wouldn't hate your old self like that, i always look at my younger self as a little sister of sorts :) always speak well of her. She's tried hard, and is the reason why am here today! Cheers to our younger selves!
It was actually quite helpful for me to hear how you look back at the little things you used to fear and realise how pathetic it was. I still have a fear of drizzling a bit of olive oil on my salad when I know that I will enjoy the salad much more. Thank you for your honest videos.
I would HATE watching my old self eating habits haha just the same as you with the high carb diet, I feel like I was always obsessed with diets and it makes me mad that I had an unreal constant feeling of “yeah, I’m not obsessing with food anymore, I’m cured!!!!, so I’m going to follow this new diet but HEY!! I’m not obsessing no more. This diet is like super healthy, not like the others”.. sure @myself lmao I said the same thing for literally every diet that I followed 😅 it makes me so mad thinking about how silly I was! (And good video, as always, keep it up! Cheers mate)
I know what ya mean! And I'm sure that in a few years' time, I will look back at some of my habits now and laugh. Always a learning experience, that's for sure!
I remember watching that video when it came out! It’s been fun watching you evolve over the years. Personally my life changed for the better when I started prioritizing protein and healthy fats over carbs in my diet
Team white rice! lol @ rice flavored water. Oh, I remember the potato fad. I used to eat them a lot too, same with bananas. I think what we learned from all this is to eat mostly whole foods, low salt, lowish fat and oil, and just eat a god damn beyond burger and pizza once in awhile!
Isn’t it so great after going through so many seasons in life, how you find what you feel best with?!?! I look back at myself and think “Thank goodness I got over that!”
Oh god. This is making me think of my diet in 2016 and wow. It was pretty bad. I didn't start eating healthy until a year a later and then even more so when I found vegan youtube (like I don't think I ever bought greens at that point...) I also switched to decaf coffee for my anxiety. I realized my stress levels weren't as bad as when I was in undergrad and was experiencing a ton of anxiety. Two months decaf and no complaints. Final thought- I have no idea how you all at 3 potatoes in one sitting. I remember watching Caitlin Shoemaker's "Fry-day" posts back in the day and not understanding. I usually will use one large potato or two if I'm super hungry Great video!
Girl! It may not be of interest to you since you don’t care much for the steel cut oats, but they have quick cook ones now! We love those in my house. They’re great! You can get them in the canisters or in pouches. ❤️❤️❤️
I really don’t view the potato cleanse as extreme. It’s really helped me and many other people I know to reset your taste buds and cut food addiction. It’s not meant to be followed forever.
i love this reflective video on one of your old videos, that's awesome that you can look back on your diet before...people's diet and lifestyles change, whether or not vegan or not
I remember the potato cleanse!! My husband and I joked it was the Mark Watney diet 😂 (for all you sci-fi fans out there!) Just found your channel! Great content and I'm excited to see more, girl! Thanks for sharing a great message!!!
Crispy baked fries no oil, secret is to boil the cut up potatoes for a few minutes - drain and dry the pan - put back in pan and put flour and spices on potatoes, shake then bake. They end up crispy
wow! this is so interesting that you looked back at your diet in 2016 because I can totally relate. In 2016, I was doing raw til 4 and I was so scared of fat, like i didn't eat any overt fats. I was so othorexic. I feel like it was so bad for my health to not have been eating fats and enjoying my food. I was so fearful of food. I'm not like that anymore thank goodness, but it's so crazy when I look back at it too. thanks for sharing! I don't think you should do another starch solution video because it didn't make you feel good, but it would be cool to see you update your old zero fat recipes.
Mug cakes are life. I love oatmeal. I always soak it overnight. I find the less time I have to cook it the less acidic it gets. I'll either serve it with cinnamon, maple syrup and hemp hearts or mangoes and coconut milk Sarah style.
You should try to make overnight oats with steel cut oats and a creamy plant milk. I add agave, chia seeds, cinnamon and vanilla and it comes out like rice pudding. Perfect for snacks or dessert. I soak mine for like 3 days though. The longer the soak, the softer they get. It’s the only way I can eat them!
The oatmeal with all of those topping must be about 500 calories! Lol. Ya, steel cut oats are high carb but have fiber. So, not too bad. I love them and just add a date and a Brazil nut, sometimes some vegan milk. Decaf coffee is processed with the same stuff they make nail polish remover with! Look for Swiss water process filtered decaf. Love the video, it was fun to watch you relive the meals and hear your updated comments about it all. Thanks!
oh my god i have such a pet peeve about people taking the skin off their potatos. first of all the skin tastes so good on baked fries, you don't have to go through the work of peeling, and you get all the nutrients from the skin!
oh my god i remember watching that video! lol i’ve been around for awhile and have enjoyed you through all your evolutions :) don’t torture yourself with the potato cleanse. i think seeing your updated tastier versions of recipes would be more fun and interesting for everyone! and the closest i ever came to HCLF is buying powdered peanut butter almost 3 years ago and it still sits in my pantry untouched. ive never been into dieting, not enough reason or willpower but youtube managed to convince me that one product was so necessary lol. i’ll start throwing it in smoothies as you suggested!
When you talked about the tofu-stuff (having to much fat and protein) I remembered that I actually rarely ever ate chickpeas (also oats for some time) because they had like idk more fat than some other carby food like WHAT?! Gosh, eating disorders.. and I can so relate to the restaurant-sauce-story. Cool video I'm glad we're over 2014-2016 man :D
Ugh so many flashbacks...I also avoided salt religiously, ate steel cut oats which took 20 minutes to make, was also 12ish pounds lighter and still trying to lose even more...I was definitely disguising food problems as getting healthy
Whaaaat. How could you be satisfied after two potatoes? This was really interesting to watch, thank for sharing! It's wonderful to see how your mindset and eating changed.
Man, I ate the exact same way a couple of years back... I cringe thinking back to my mindset and also the way I physically felt from overeating constantly and the lack of protein and fats! I feel like (the strict interpretation of) the starch solution and raw till 4 attracted people who had an unhealthy relationship with food and their body to begin with (that's how it was for me and for a lot of vegan UA-camrs, anyway) and who felt safe on these diets because although portion control wasn't necessary, there would still be elements of restriction. Back then, I didn't even think that what I was doing was toxic! Thank goodness the majority of us has grown and evolved 🙌 P.S.: rice milk tastes rancid
I think with any program there needs to be a balance. They thought they needed to eat fruits and veggies all day. That is what made them sick. For me eating Plant Based helps my Digestive issues. But everyone is different. Balance is the key. Great video.
The starch solution is a balanced diet. You can eat healthy fats if you’re not trying to lose weight, or if you are. It just changes how much weight you lose at a time.
This video was great! Really like good idea with this cause it was super entertaining and made me feel better about including more fats into my diet because we were the same! When i first went vegan after a few months I already lost weight and was skinny but in my head i needed to lose more weight so i restricted myself to high carb low fat. Thanks Sarah! love you and your videos!

I thrive on high starch, it gives me tons of energy and if my fat goes too far past 15% I sleep for days and my skin goes nuts. I love little experiments like this ☺️
That's so awesome that you've found a way of eating that works for you! I agree, it's so important to know that while we can take pointers from other people, ultimately we will each have to figure out what works best with our bodies. I think it's awesome that different styles of eating are represented in the community now!
It's really good to see you not struggling with disordered eating like before.
Such a great video!! I remember watching your older videos while eating my own pile of saltless fries. I am so glad I stopped restricting food and brought fat and protein and salt back into my life! I feel so much healthier and happier ❤️
It's so cute how you grew as a person. I totally feel you. I used to restrict my calories so much a couple of years back! For the record, I love both the old you and the new you. You are always super authentic and that's what I find amazing.
This video hits home.Really glad I eventually found my way to a well-balanced (vegan ofc) diet rather than being on the restrictive HCLF train
Okay the mastercard joke took me out! Good job!
😍
I definitely stan the idea of you revisiting old videos and changing things up!
Don't use the word stan
I love how honest this video is. Thank you for making it!
I use to do the same thing with romaine lettuce cups, potatoes and sriracha! That was my go to meal, but I still love LOVE potatoes.
Old you looks like Mandy Moore!!
The crunch sound of your potato tacos is so satisfying!
This is such an amazing video, and so so important. Love the honesty
Genius video idea! Loved it! Balanced vegan diet for the win. I always felt terrible trying the high carb diet. I would be starving just and hour after stuffing my face
YES!!! Me too! i for sure need fat and protein!
That’s how I remember you with the red hair
Yes I remember the potato cleanse and being so offended when Unnatural Vegan called her out on it..now I'm like damn UV was right. 🤦🏻♀️
can relate to this so much lol.
Carolina R those French toast sticks are sooo good
aren't they though?!
Are they vegan? I live near a Kroger but never bothered to look at the ingredients for french toast things because I always assume they're not vegan.
Yes they are (: just ate some this morning lol
Can you and Eric react to your old videos together, including the ones that you two filmed together? I love you Sarah, keep the wonderful content coming!
Karen Dang love this idea!
Also, I like the current chill but still clearly happy Sarah.
Vegan mug cake video!!!!
My diet story: I went keto before becoming vegan and didn't lose a single pound. I stopped being low carb and focused on eating regularly in smaller portions and went down to my lowest weight ever.
Fields congrats!!! Hope you celebrated this milestone.
Then you weren't really doing keto right, my friend.
@@scandisnowgirl3696 or maybe different diets work for different people.
@@scandisnowgirl3696 that is such a condescending comment. Keto doesn't work for everyone.
Yes! Dye your hair! I've been watching your older videos as well and feel like the red really suits you.
i love how you reacted but also made a re-enactment of the meals !
I really like that idea of updating an old video "what i eat in a day" to suit your current diet.
try mashing a super ripe banana, vanilla , cinnamon, 30g quick oats (pure, not the sugared sachet) and add water to cook - i add a lot cuz i like mine soupy too) and cook on stove , soooo yum the banana sweetens it nicely and makes it substantial
Always a learning experience, that's for sure!
meee
I remember watching that video when it came out! It’s been fun watching you evolve over the years. Personally my life changed for the better when I started prioritizing protein and healthy fats over carbs in my diet
My version of mud cake, put soaked dates in blender and blend, then add black beans with some juice from the beans then add some cacao powder.
Totally! (Responds to this comment while eating pasta w/ beyond sausage haha.)
@@SarahsVeganKitchen omg so good!
I like it when people reflect on their past. It ain't easy. You're on of the few vegan UA-camrs I watch even tho I'm a big meat eater.
Isn’t it so great after going through so many seasons in life, how you find what you feel best with?!?! I look back at myself and think “Thank goodness I got over that!”
Oh god. This is making me think of my diet in 2016 and wow. It was pretty bad. I didn't start eating healthy until a year a later and then even more so when I found vegan youtube (like I don't think I ever bought greens at that point...)
I also switched to decaf coffee for my anxiety.
I usually will use one large potato or two if I'm super hungry
Great video!
Hi Sarah! Lovely as always. Looking back at older videos is neat. Also love to see how people grow and change!!! ❤️❤️❤️ much love girl!
Calling out Eric because he definitely tried to do the Soylent challenge on his channel awhile back =b
haha Eric does crazy stuff just for the hell of it all the time. 🙄
i love this reflective video on one of your old videos, that's awesome that you can look back on your diet before...people's diet and lifestyles change, whether or not vegan or not
I remember the potato cleanse!!
I LOVE YOU SARAH! Your videos are my fav.
aw thank you!!!!
YEAAASSS!!!! THIS IS THE BEST!!! I would watch another!!!
Hi Sarah! I’ve cooked steel cut oats in the Instant pot!
I would love to see you recreate dishes from this period but do it the way you eat at the moment!
i’ve been following you from this time / even before! crazy how timesfliesssss
I loveee this hair color on you
thank you!!
That's a great idea "How I made it then - How I make it now" :-)
oh my god i remember watching that video! lol i’ve been around for awhile and have enjoyed you through all your evolutions :) don’t torture yourself with the potato cleanse. i think seeing your updated tastier versions of recipes would be more fun and interesting for everyone! and the closest i ever came to HCLF is buying powdered peanut butter almost 3 years ago and it still sits in my pantry untouched. ive never been into dieting, not enough reason or willpower but youtube managed to convince me that one product was so necessary lol. i’ll start throwing it in smoothies as you suggested!
I love when you post videos this frequently :D
8:35 I love how honest you are 😀
When you talked about the tofu-stuff (having to much fat and protein) I remembered that I actually rarely ever ate chickpeas (also oats for some time) because they had like idk more fat than some other carby food like WHAT?!
Gosh, eating disorders.. and I can so relate to the restaurant-sauce-story.
Cool video I'm glad we're over 2014-2016 man :D
I like to make oatmeal granola with maple syrup, peanut butter, raisins, and nuts to get those oats in. I also make oat milk, oar pancakes etc....
I would love to see you alter your old what I eat in a day videos great idea
Also yes! make another video trying your old diets please!!
Thank goodness the majority of us has grown and evolved 🙌
P.S.: rice milk tastes rancid
you seem so much happier and well balanced now. I do love the red hair tho :)
I loved this video! 😂 oh and you look very good with this hair colour 😊
I used to each just like this! I am so happy my mindset has shifted and I can eat peanut butter, avocado, and oil :)
