    Bad luck guys, I’ve seen so many BD tanks failing the same way, the mounting brackets are welded to the tank , when the chassis flexes so does the tank , should be strapped in like the original tank.
    IMO.

    Good ole brown Davis tanks. We had the same issue. The welds had over penetrated and then they cracked. To brown Davis credit, then freighted the tank back to their workshop, welded a whole new end in the tank and returned. Very good after sales support from them

    I had exactly the same issue with my Brown Davis long range fuel tank, twice. Twice I had to take it back for repair. Mine split too big for the old soap trick but luckily a mate was there with a bucket and a load of empty jerry cans so it didn't all spill on the ground at the Lambert Centre on the way to the Simpson. I told them at BD they did it all wrong, made it too rigid and bolted direct to the chassis, for the amount of flex the Troopy has in the rough, should have used suspended bands instead like all other fuel tanks usually are.

    Having a fuel tank leaking is a serious issue when you're in a remote area. Fuel & water will become precious. I'm glad you guys managed to power it through, and what's you're guys going to do without Adrian? He's a game changer 😉. That couple is so generous, I would have given up my djmini2 remote control too if I was there 😁. One of the best parts of travelling is it's the people you met along the way. Early in the piece you said the BD tank was necessary for this trip. How do you feel about it now - shoulda left it stock mate and brought a Mulgo 😜 that has latches that don't break and can be sourced in Oz if you need them 🙂 probably an unhelpful comment but hey

    • @OverlandTravellers
      @OverlandTravellers  Рік тому +3

      Well, considering we wouldn’t have made the distance with the stock tanks I feel the getting out if it is still preferable to running out of diesel. Also someone else said their stock Toyota tank failed on the CSR. Still happy with the headspace for a lot of reasons, keen to see the upgraded latch they will make after seeing this fail, as long as they are receptive to feedback and keen to improve small issues I’m still on board. Obviously it’s frustrating the tank did that but hey, these things happen on trips no matter how well prepared you are, it’s really a case of how you deal with the issues.

    I've had the BD tank on my dualcab for over 100k and it has never given any trouble whatsoever. It's 110l and totally separate to the standard 130l tank giving a total fuel load of 240l. More than enough for remote travel. We've covered the CSR, Anne Beadell, Connie Sue, Tanami, Plenty , Great Central and a lot of tracks in between. May just be plain luck, competence of the installer, driving style, who knows.
    Somebody has to give BD a thumbs up

    After two Simpsons desserts trips and a third one coming down from hey River from the Northern Territory heading south to the clay pan then GPS East of course there was no tracks just a shot line I ruptured my subtank where the l bracket was bolted to the chassis head snapped so we got the straps out and we'll you guessed it strapped it up this was in 2006. When we got back to Brisbane it had to be replaced. That same year I'm now doing east to west and just as we come off the Mitchell plateaus heading towards elquestro the main tank how to crack in the steel panel not the Wells of brackets they were extra perfect it's just that sheet steel itself split like a letter Y again we had to drain some fuel and strap everything up again and make our way to elquestro where everything got taken out and rebuilt. And all this was under a GU Patrol 2005 model and it wasn't Opposite Lock long-range fuel tanks. Needless to say I won't be dealing with them anymore because we dropped the front right hand 40mm shocky they would not send out a replacement which were tough dogs suspension so from Broome all the way back to Brisbane with only three good shockies and their instructions would do not touch it or it won't be covered just keep driving.

    If you have this problem in future, use a drill, PK screws, sheet metal plate, hacksaw plus blades, nitryl rubber sheet, and screw a patch over the split. Often not a bad ploy to make up some drilled plate in advance. Crude but screwed down tightly will get you down to a tiny leak, or no leak at all. One can also use that punched out plate cut to shape, since the nitryl rubber plugs the leak.
