it's always difficult to add a straight strip of fabric to a round surface. The best way to do it is to cut either slits or notches (depending on how okay you are with the lines showing and how big the thing is) in the strip you're adding, and fold over the sections one by one. You can also fold it under itself every now and then (I did that with the hem of a circle skirt once), but that doesn't always look good if your fabric isn't very forgiving.

As someone who also owns a surprisingly intelligent pet, I understand your pain. ;_; My dog will knock over her food/water bowl whenever she's hungry/thirsty. One is an old bread pan, while the other is a chewed-up plastic bowl.
