  • At just under 8000 acres, French Creek State Park is a haven for birds, wildlife, and people looking for open space, lush forests, and clean waters in the densely poulated south eastern portion of Pennsylvania. In combination with neighboring Hopewell Furnace National Historic site, state game lands, county parks, and other protected lands, French Creek forms the centerpiece and linchpin of a collective area known as the Hopewell Bigwoods. This region boasts of being the largest contiguous block of forested lands between Washington DC and New York city. On this hike I chose to take advantage of a beautiful early summer weather pattern that had moved into the region dropping the typical sweltering temperatures and humidity. French Creek contains over 35 miles of trails and on this particular afternoon I chose the 3.1 mile loop Six Penny Trail. The trail begins near the park campground and gradually descends through lush and mature hardwood forests - characteristic of the region- to the remains of the parks original picnic area, wetlands, and the aptly named Six Penny Creek. From this point the trail then begins to climb back up the hill and towards the campground making a moderately challenging loop. I enjoyed the way the sunlight filtered down through the canopy, and could hear the calls of the Brood X cicadas echoing through the forest. I finished the evening relaxing by Hopewell Lake and enjoying the summer night.

Thank you Kate! It's my goal to make these little short films stand out a bit from typical hiking videos. Music, lighting, and camera angles help to create a bit of ambience. I appreciate your support, Gator out...

I enjoyed this state park when I lived in Pennsylvania. I lived in Phoenixville and hiked, kayaked, cross country skied , and would bike out to the lake from home. It’s a really good state park!!!

Ironically Gayle I was just filming there again last Saturday near the lake and than exploring Hopewell Furnace! That video will probably be done in a week or so. I live in Montgomery County PA myself so I frequently visit French Creek.

We just passed by the Six Penny Trail today on our way back from hiking the Raccoon and Buzzards Loop Trails at Hopewell. Thanks for the opportunity to get a lay of the land before we head out.

Great video, very nice music, so calming! Definitely could hear the cicadas in the video, if you know what they sound like, you can’t miss it 😄. We don’t have them in NJ by us, but got to hear and see them on our trip to MD.

@ Eva Honkova Thank you so much. I've found that mixing the audio can be a bit tricky on these vids as some sounds come out louder or quieter depending what type of device you are listening on. My next vid is a little closer to your neck of the woods and I think it's going to be a good one. Happy 4th of July! 🎆 🎇

It's rare to get a stretch of cooler temps and lower humidity during the summer months, and it makes for a great opportunity to get out on the trail. Happy 4th of July Belle Woods!

Is this your favorite trail at French creek or is there something better? There's not many French Creek videos on UA-cam besides campground tours. Are there any waterfalls in French Creek State Park?

Thankyou for this question, its a good one. I would say that pretty much all of the terrain and trails at French Creek are fairly similiar. You have medium sized hills and dense hardwood forest ecology throughout the park. It depends on what you are looking for in a hike. This Six Penny trail is certainly an excellent representative example of the forests here with the added bonus of leading to a unique location of historic interest, and also a rare for SouthEastern PA wild trout stream. If your asking me personally, the most interesting thing at French Creek is Hopewell Lake, and also the adjacent Hopewell Furnace National Historic site. So if I could do one hike there, it would incorporate the lake and also the fantastic Hopewell Village in addition to looping through some of the lesser used trails in the eastern half of the park. I also have a video showing the lake and village studio.ua-cam.com/users/videofaEYQbgl6YM/edit for context. In addition, there is a man made "waterfall" where Hopewell Lake spills over and becomes "French Creek" which is actually a very nice location. I would do the Mill Creek trail and weave a path through Hopewell Village to get the best bang for the buck, if I could only do one trail one day here at French Creek.

I just got back from FCST, and I heard about the stairs in the middle of the wood. Any idea where's the location.?

That's actually a great question. I have covered most of the trails there and never come across it myself. It may be easier to find in the winter with out all of the ground cover and vegetation. I know there has to be a video or two about it online somewhere. At any rate, thanks for watching and leaving the comment, it's much appreciated.👍
