Why Doesn't God Answer Our Prayers?

- Jesus tells us that if we knock, the door will be opened to us, that all who come to him in prayer will get what they want. But this isn't always the case, is it? Sometimes, our prayers are not answered. What does this say about God, and how do we reconcile this with our faith?

I was 36, out of the Army for two years, and stuck in a dead end, low-paying job. I regretted leaving the Army. But there was no going back and if I could I would have. Now I was frustrated but worse, truly afraid. I prayed intently to God, telling Him that I made no demands or expectations of Him, but that I would appreciate any help, anything, from Him. One month later, while stacking books at my low-paying job, I received a phone call from my head-hunter. My job interview was successful. I had a job offer at a very good salary, excellent benefits, and restored me to the middle class. More, I now had a meaningful future ahead of me. Was I grateful? You bet I was and I profusely thanked the Lord.

Gus Grizzel no I don’t hear God speak if I heard Him speak I would go to a doctor lol,I sometimes read the bible and spiritual books favourite text in the bible New Testament The whole of Romans chapter 8 you will find it just after the 4 gospels

I've gotten down on my knees praying for my life to get better and I feel like he's just standing there wanting me to break into my wrath and watching me suffer and I'm sick of it🔥😠
I liked the analogy of the walkie-talkie
Yes. God will actually talk to YOU, if you shut up once in awhile and listen.
And let go of the other 2 buttons that we tend to hold, Fear and Doubt. Then we can hear God better than ever!
This guy makes more sense than any other pastor I've listened to in church, and I've listened to some "big names" with big "love offering requests"
I may have to convert to Catholicism
@Tu Madre hey I go to a Baptist church at the moment too :)
I'm also considering converting to Catholicism. I'm a Protestant but, it just doesn't seem to fit me and who I am. It seems while in the past it was corrupt with greed and evil, now in the present day, it just seems like me, like my path. My journey to eventually going to heaven and it just calls to me. I cannot describe it, but it seems like God is calling me and that Catholicism is the christian denomination that he wants me to follow. Christians can walk different denominations, whether it be Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, Non Denominational, or Eastern, or Messianic Judaism, after all for most denominations who are christian, aren't we all just brothers and sisters in Christ? One Family, ko'okahi Ohana, Uno/una Familia? And i say this statement as an attempt to unite all sects in Christianity in love, compassion and acceptance of one and other, after all, we read the same scriptures, we live in the same world, but most importantly, we all worship the same God.

Sooooo…. Disease , suffering … children with cancer … what about when you pray for that and it’s continually ignored
This priest is actually far beyond His age. His parents are so lucky.
You've layered so many conditions onto prayer that you may as well say that it's either random, not going to happen, or was going to happen anyway - Which means the act of prayer is irrelevant. So why even bother praying?
Been fired yesterday and and found this vid today. Right timing and made me felt a little better. Tq Fr. Casey. Pray for me that I may get a job soon. Thank u and God bless from Malaysia.
Your videos have become an essential part of my virtual religious education class during this pandemic for high schoolers wanting to be confirmed. Our Council is also watching them as part of our virtual faith formation this year. Thank you for making these videos, and I thank God for answering your prayer. You are making a difference to students and adults 3000 miles away.
I have no idea why UA-cam suggested your channel mult I'm so glad it did. I'm not Catholic and you are answering so many of my questions. Thank you !
Thank you Father!!! You have no idea how relevant this video is to me right now... Many times God has answered my prayers but there were also times when I felt that He didn’t. But after watching your video I know now that I had been blind to God’s presence in my life when I thought He wasn’t there. Right now, I’m praying for something really really important but i guess I am praying for the wrong thing. And I just realized that this video seems to be God’s way of initially responding to my prayers. God isn’t my genie. He is my Creator, My Master, My Parent and my Friend. Well done for a great video, Father! God bless you! 😊😊😊
I really like the vibe of this video: calm music, no crazy transitions, etc. Perfect for the topic, thanks father!

Many years ago our professor opened a class discussion on the very same topic. Class members responded with the very same responses as yours. He thanked us for our thoughts and proceeded on with his lecture (Gospel of Mark). A student raised her hand and interrupted him to ask what was his take on the question. He answered: "I believe anything we could ever possibly ask for has already been given to us, in Christ" S.B.M., SJ
It took me some time, shall we say, to understand his answer. I have been astonished ever since.
Yes, this is Jesus's "Lesson from the Fig Tree"...Mark 11:24, one of my favorite bible passages.
wow that student is he biggest simp i've ever heard of, in fact it redefined the word " simp" in my mind
Because for some reason, we hold God way less accountable than any human. Imagine calling someone for help who you’ve been let down by soooo many times, and yet people tell you that the problem is you’re not asking the right way....or imagine trusting in someone who you’ve heard all these amazing stories about how he helped other people....just not YOU. I mean, it’s ridiculous. Don’t get me wrong, I attend Mass weekly. Confession monthly. I just feel I am more faithful to God than he is to me.
So right. Im almost sick of seeing people in nice houses gushing over their relationships with God while I pray and pray and feel nothing

Reminds me of a story my pastor once told me about prayers, A man was stuck on a island in middle of the ocean prayed always for God to save him. After he had passed on he was in heaven and asked God why he never saved him and God responded why didn't you take the fisherman boats I sent you. I think so many people (myself included) have always expected big things when God answers our prayer we miss the little things that shows he is there being the "whisper in the storm"
Loved this one, Fr.Casey. I guess lots of us go through similar experiences. It might seem amusing but when my heart was broken, one of the things that got me through was singing John Denver's song, ''Some Days are Diamonds'', over and over. I also said to myself, ''I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me''. It was still pretty crushing when she didn't come back.

So basically trust in god and gods wider vision.
He does answer. Sometime the answer is 'not yet', or 'I have something better in mind for you.'
@David Russell Yes, like the story of the man and the flood. The flood waters were rising, and a man in a Jeep came by to rescue him. "No, God will save me!" The flood waters rose to where he climbed to the second floor of his house, and someone came in a boat. "No, God will save me!" The waters rose to where he had to climb onto the roof, and a helicopter came and lowered a basket. "No, God will save me!" The man drowned, and said to God, "I trusted in You; why did You not save me?" God said, "I sent you a Jeep, I sent you a boat, I sent you a helicopter. You refused them and it is MY fault?"
Did you actually hear a voice saying those words, or is this your projection on things?

I read somewhere that God answers them in three ways. Go. Which means he agrees and will give you what you pray for, slow which means he might grant it but wants to wait for the right time and then No. no matter he will not answer it
I remember praying for a sign to God if hes going to heal my mother. I remember afterwards opening instagram and seeing a post that said that God asked Noah to build an ark, but Noah never asked for signs he just built the ark and waited on God for 100 years. And to not tempt God for signs and instead believe in his promises.
Thank you Fr. Casey, great video. Personally I think God answers our prayers, just sometimes the answer is No, or be patience, or He has something better for us. He always answers. I like the part that prayer is us tuning ourselves to God not the other way round.. Great reflection Fr..
I’ve prayed to God for my very stressful situation. I have lost everything, the devil using tenants to force drugs into my home, I prayed and prayed to God for a better place to move to. Nothing and I only have a week left until I’m on the streets. And God left me in this on my own, I trusted He will open doors so the mistreatment by property manager and tenants would stop. So in my case the Devil ALWAYS win. Prayer again unanswered.
Funny how the devil and poverty always work so closely together.
Thank you Father, it is such an important question, and you gave an elucidating, comforting and amazing answer!!!!!😊
So, on one of Father Casey's videos from this time last month, I mentioned I was moving across the country, leaving friends and personal belongings. At the time, I wasn't seeing a lot of God's hand in my life. I still don't, not really, but I'm alive, didn't get sick from traveling, and am mostly settled. It wasn't the answer I wanted and the future is uncertain but it's at least an answer to "please get me through this alive". I guess God's Big Picture takes time. Just an update, in case anyone from that video was curious.
I don't know you but I'm on the other end and am terrified to make a move. I'm afraid of a lot of things but if I may I want to say this. Sometimes when you jump the parachute doesn't open right away. You get a few scrapes and bumps along the way but eventually IT WILL open and life will be more "smooth sailing". You have taken the arduous work of overcoming your fears to move across the country. You opened the ground, you tilled it open for God to plant the seeds he wants to plant. That plant doesn't grow into fruition right away. Please still give it time. At least a year unless you have panic attacks or something. YOU ARE BRAVE. You are incredible. I don't say that as some cheap generic compliment. I am on the other side of your situation and the fear is traumatizing so I already know how brave you are. If you feel like chatting let me know. We don't have to be at this alone.

One of my favorite passages in the Bible is Jesus's "Lesson from the Fig Tree", Mark 11:24 "Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours." I'm learning to work on patience and listening better. God is always working behind the scenes with his angels, setting things into place, according to His will. While waiting, I'm learning to let go of Fear and Doubt.
That is a good passage... one that shows that the bible isn't always right.

What do you do if you ask for help, suffering everyday and no help comes? Is the person experiencing only pain all the time at fault for not reading Gods intentions?
How are you doing now ? I need hope
God answers prayers in ways we often do not expect him to. God's ways are NOT our ways. He sees what we do not. He knows what we do not. The key in all of this is seeing when those prayers ARE answered--even when it's not the way we would have wanted them answered--but often turn out being better. God is the ultimate parent--one who truly knows what is best for us--even when we do not.
Excellent observation/homily. Wisdom has entered your understanding! Impressive!
Thanks, fr. Casey, it’s very timely :)
Your arguments are valid. There was a sermon I heard about prayer recently and I can’t remember the readings the argument was based on. I know I will butcher it, but the general theme was: “Prayer is to worship God and thank him, praying for particular outcomes is fine, but is of secondary importance.” God is not an ATM and since he knows all things that will happen, some future is set. Nothing says that prayer itself can’t be the a link in the chain of causality, and that seems perfectly reasonable to me. Take away: be less enthusiastic about praying for specific things in general.
I have usually experienced that, if I ask God for a better body He usually answer by reminding me that diet and exercise are within my control, if I ask for peace He reminds me that I can take fitteen minutes to pray the rosary to that effect and, if I ask for forgiveness, He reminds me that its already given.
Does he really say all of that to you?
Thank you Fr. Casey. This was very helpful to me i greatly appreciate you.
Thank you for this message.
Beautiful message, Father! Thank you!
The strong instance where i believe God answered my prayers was this.
For months, everynight, I'd have the most grueling and intricate nightmares. There wasn't a night where I went without them. One night, I got down on my knees and asked of my Lord that he please help me have no nightmares. That night, I had a good dream! I can't say if this was a placebo, or wasn't God answering my prayers.... But I thank God regardless.
Im guilty of trying to make God see what I want Him to see. Sometimes I even forget previous blessings when things that I want doesn't go how and when I want it. It is an everyday battle and my journey just keeps getting better and better 🙏🙏🙏
That’s how I feel everyday when I wake up. Upset that my life hasn’t changed yet 😢
Why would God show me someone- this perfect person, as my spouse. After I've been praying so long for them. And then they appear. Even better than anyone my imagination could have conjured up. And then he takes them away before anything can start? I am so confused. I understand they have free will but I don't get it. Why show this person to me and then take them away? What's the point? If he knows that person would just ditch me? I asked so many times to make me forget them then, if they dont want me, so that I can find a good spouse who does. And yet instead my love grows deeper every day. It is incredibly painful and never ending.
SOOOOOO true Father Casey. Thank you so much for the beautiful message. Thank God that He has answer most of my prayers but on His time and not on mine. I do know what you mean about praying for your girlfriend getting back to you. I did the same in 1996 & in 2002....oh I was so wrong. God bless you, and keep those videos coming. To / for the Glory of God always....
Beautiful verses quoted... thank you. "God will answer the prayer of every servant if that prayer is urgent. His mercy is vast, illimitable. He answers the prayers of all His servants…" "God is merciful. In His mercy He answers the prayers of all His servants when according to His supreme wisdom it is necessary." ~ Abdul-Baha, Baha'i Faith
I always remind myself that God's Will > my will, and try to think of His version of what I'm asking for. He answers all prayers, sometimes the answer appears different compared to what we expected, but it's always of similar or even greater value.😊
Why bother to pray then?
@@gusgrizzel8397 When you pray, envision what you're asking for, marrying your thoughts and your emotions. The key is to "believe that you're receiving" what you're asking for, right now! (or that God has everything currently in the works). The prayer will be answered faster, and may turn out exactly as you had envisioned, or in a similar fashion (whatever is closest alignment with God's Divine Will). At the end, you won't be disappointed.
@@GenXer82 Isn't that a New Age thing? Wish really hard and it will appear?Where is that in the bible?

I had encountered a demon once in a spirit box app. The demon put a dark curse on me where I get dizzy everywhere I go, even when I sleep or lay down, I slept for 2 hours in 4 days. If demons are real, so are angels. If angels are real, so is God. God is very much real! Long story short, once I started to believe in God, the demon’s curse disappeared and when it was time for the demon to almost possess me, my family broke the pendulum that was used to communicate with the demon, and in a nick of time, saved my life. God saved me, even when I didn’t pray to be saved. I’m still currently dealing with evil spirits, but I know in the right moment of time, God will save me over again.
Thank you very much 😇

Possibly God has helped me in regular ordinary ways. For sometimes I expect things to just happen. I've practiced prayers done by a channel called Daily Rosary family. I would like to become more open to God and understand how he works.
Also, since you are a priest, what happens when you pray for someone who is sick and they end up never getting better or dying? That is something I wonder sometimes.
Pray for increased faith in God all throughout the world.
Yes, people need to start turning to God more than ever, especially now.
Sadly 😔 that won't be so easy, people don't believe in God as they used to, I myself am a fellow believer but people around me choose not to because they seek evidence that is all around them
The Bright Lord And unfortunate for them, there’s a lot of misinformation going around, especially in the media. People keep changing their story and exaggerating things. Can’t trust anyone.
I recently went through a breakup, and am still reeling. I initially asked God to just bring us back together. Lately, I've started to ask him to simply "open the door in her heart to the chance. don't force her to take the chance, just open her eyes to it" because it IS her choice. I still think free will is a terrible thing thats led to more problems than good, and that God couldve been a bit more restrictive with us, but can't change the past.
What a beautiful message! Thank you father for this reminded on how we look into prayers. This is very helpful. May God bless you more. 🙏
Sometimes the answer is no. Sometimes is you must learn something. Sometimes we just don't listen.
Back in the last century, I was riding my bicycle home from working open to close 3 days in a row. I was very tired that night while riding home. It was a dark, moonless, foggy night, there were no cars on the road at the time so I had no other headlights to go by. At sometime I lost track of time and space. When I regained my senses I was lost on the same straight road. I asked God if I am close to my road give me a sign. I saw his sign. This sign was a landmark a short way from the road I needed to turn on. I said thanks, and with a renewed sense of hope found my turn. The next day I went to that church to say thank you for having the sign on. However when I got there there were people fixing the sign, and they told me that the sign hasn't worked for months.
Sometimes it is the way the request is asked. God helped get me home safe that dark foggy night.
Prayer changes us internally. Praying to change anything externally is a waste of time. We can never know God’s will
