I agree. Its utterly stupid, because once identified, it already spread. If people would follow through with vaccination, this helps mitigate risk. To shut down economies is damaging. There will always be antivaxxers and I’m done worrying about their stupidity as well.

What I can say is that it's being over-sensationalised. It might actually benign like the others its why SA didn't go into a state of panic. Its a variant of concern because of quick and easy transmission. There is no basis to panic .We still don't know about it

Going back throughout our history, previous pandemics lasted on average, 2.5 years. In January of 2022, we'll be at 2 years. God willing, we'll be coming over this pandemic hump by summer of 2022. Trying to remain positive!🙏

They should do fast tests before and after every flight. The shared canned air on international flights has been a noted concern for years should another pandemic occur, whelp here we are. They seriously need to reroute the ventilation so that unfiltered air doesn't expose an entire section or the whole plane if an infectious individual boards or turns infectious halfway to Australia.

@@johnassal5838, Put transparent shower curtains with a zipper around every seat with everyone having their own HEPA filter with an ozone generator and UV light sterilization. Make sure that 0 viral particles make it through. Change the filter with every flight and sterilize them.
They can figure out how to make airplanes 100% safe, but they aren’t even trying. They should also require N100 masks in airports and on the plane until your zipped up in your bubble with your filtered air.

Why do airlines have to wait for guidance? Latest I've heard about Omicron is though it is more contagious than Delta it makes people less sick. Little hospitalizations or deaths. Could turn out to be a good thing if this out competes Delta giving a lot of people immunity with little severe disease.
It is far too early for scientists to make that determination. Since there is a lag between infection and serious illness, we must wait several more weeks for that to be confirmed or denied.

I thought it was detected in someone with HIV/AIDS. Either way, it's a lot like the "original" variant which was detected in Wuhan in late December of 2020, but already in circulation in numerous Italian provinces as early as September 2019, detected by blood samples from "healthy" volunteers in a lung cancer screening trial being found in more than 11% of the volunteers...

Of course most countries must allow their own citizens and permanent residents the right to return (except apparently Australia which prevented citizens from returning from India) and as the disease doesn't care about nationality, those targeted travel bans will again not be very effective. They really need to work on their quarantine and screening procedures.
@Progressive Parody And proper quarantines and screening would do more to slow the disease than only a partial ban based on citizenship. If they really want travel bans to slow the spread to buy time then do what Australia did and make it an actual ban, not just a ban on foreign nationals alone. Sure, just reducing the overall volume of travel might be construed as slowing down the spread so of course the buying time will be the excuse but providing actual resistance to the spread through proper quarantines and testing would definitely be more effective even if it is just to buy time.

This is NEVER going to go away when you have half the world's population boycotting masks and vaccines. They just had a big protest in Europe over masks, so it's not just here. These new variants are going to develop but at least the masks and vaccine would slow the spread.

Fact is- the area in south africa where this is popping up is less than 20% vaccinated (most vaccines there are far less quality than Pfizer or Moderna). More to the point though- virtually all cases found anywhere are mild or completely asymptomatic.
Probably not that much more deadly, but not that much less either. On the other hand, if the US get 1 million new cases a day instead of 200,000 new cases, there will many more deaths and overwhelmed hospitals...

@@abprepboy33 Remember that this will be an add-on to the current Delta surge which is already still killing well over a thousand every day and increasing recently. Also, the first case of Omicron was reported on November 9 and Omicron supposedly has a longer incubation period according to the case in Belgium. So it's too early to say that this will be all mild, as deaths are usually about a month after infections. The median age in South Africa is less than 28. Delta and Beta has already swept through large swathes of Africa which may be one of the reasons why Africa hasn't had huge case counts and hospitalizations recently. Deaths have spiked as a percentage in South Africa the last few days though. Again, this could be because of the much larger number of infections rather than more virulence...
I read an article from a main stream media site that quoted a South African doctor that has treated patients for this new mutation. He said the symptoms are much less severe than other cases. No loss of sense of taste or smell. Just fatigue for a couple of days and many are treated at home. The doctor also said it only lasted a couple of days. The media and the ppl who hype this on the internet do not mention this.
The lead doctor in South Africa has said it is mild and all those treated have fully recovered without hospitalization .

Jumping on this should mean to find out why cases have almost dropped to zero in a few states in India with less then 20% vaccinated a country when Ivermectin was promoted and like Japan that finally approved the use of Ivermectin and cases within a few weeks of approval, from that point, has dropped almost to zero as well .
Few would choose not take Ivermectin but many will never get vaccinated...

Probably too late for travel restrictions, it's most likely spread through Europe and the US, and Canada.
I think a few things are important to note. The vast majority of the discovered cases have been in very very low vaccinated areas (like 15-20%). The vast majority of the cases have been mild or 100% asymptomatic. So they are mild cases on people who have basically no immunity.

The only thing that would have contained this is next to no air travel, internal borders that only have a small amount of people crossing it for logistics or healthcare employment. Everyone else should have been essentially limited to an area at most a few counties wide.

I think the real effect will be after Christmas. If it's spreading now, there's too little genomic testing to differentiate it from Delta. It'll just spread, and symptoms will show up 10 to 14 days later. Lots of people seem to be planning on traveling for Christmas. That's what will really spread it. But then it'll be another 10 to 14 days before those cases have symptoms. If there are New Years parties, Christmas spreaders may still not show symptoms. So I think early into mid January will be "interesting." I hope I'm wrong!
Sorry to inform you the latest variant came about by mutating it’s structure so ALLLLL the vaccines n boosters of present won’t do a damn thing to it…that being said it’s more contagious but less harmful. Bunker up if you are scared, if prayers worked …,if the science worked more like…
Doc, after almost 2 years of this I want to ask this! Why even run a “quick test” when they don’t work. Even medical personnel are running both because so often the rapid comes back fine but the other (24 hours later) that test comes back positive. Also why? These very mild symptoms were different to other variants, which gave more severe symptoms.

I work in the pharmacy, I have personally known 10 patients who died from covid. And had some family friends and close relatives die from it. This is getting too much on us. Yesterday, I saw a rally of anti maskers in the city, and I am beginning to lose hope in people.
I’ve known seven who have died and others with long Covid. The anti-masker anti-vaxxers have the blood of many thousands of needless deaths on their conscience. Oh, wait….I forgot, they don’t have a conscience.
@@Patrick_Ross, totally agree; I also know a few doctors and a couple of CNAs who said they're not sure if they can handle another wave. Two of them were contemplating quitting. With the news of this variant, I wonder how they're going to respond.
I don't blame you for losing hope. It is so frustrating. By the end of this past summer (2021), I counted 18 people I knew who died. It has been such a hard time for so many families since covid first started over a year and a half ago. The people who don't believe it exists and think it is all a made-up conspiracy only change their minds when someone in their family or someone they love dies.

I think (I could be wrong) one way a strain can take over from another is if it spreads faster (so Omicron would have to spread even faster than Delta).

My thinking too, that Omicron is probably here in U.S. already, with all this global travel, don't understand why instead of travel bans -why doesn't U.S. get the testing up (fast) for omicron instead @ the airports, because so much tourism coming to U.S. from different countries who may have been expose to omicron. Should just ban tourism travel for now.

Well the WHO didn't jump with the Alpha and we all know the outcome of that. They are not going to make that same mistake twice.
At the moment, the severity isn't known. It will take a week or two before this starts becoming apparent. If it turns out to have a high CFR then it's a good thing that actions were taken to slow its spread (more time for research, more time for vaccines to be tailored). If it turns out to be less severe - which is entirely possible! - then things go back to as they were.

Just spoke with a lab director. They said it’s GOOD that only one PCR tests misses 1/3 target genes. It means that other PCR tests can pick up all 3 genes. So you can run 2 PCR tests and if one picks up Omni and the other doesn’t - you know something is fishy and can assume it’s Omni. This removes the need to sequence which is a lengthy process. So we’ll get “sequencing data” via a PCR test. This is good!!

We can probably chalk up the response from WHO and world governments to Omicron as "better safe than sorry." They see in the available data from South Africa enough of the same red flags from earlier variants that they don't need to "wait and see."
In hindsight, this proactive response is more in line with what we would have liked to have seen from the very beginning, but it will only buy us time. The variant has already escaped the quarantine zone and here in the US, we're still in the busiest shopping and travel season of the year. Hopefully vaccination rates continue to climb.
I just ordered 20 and 95 masks I hope they're effective. If n95 are effective I suggest anybody that's concerned about this variant should get them now they're on sale at Amazon

This greatly concerns me going into 2022. My neighbor returned from South Africa three weeks ago and went on on 7 day cruise last week. She's vaccinated, however in her "live videos" she didn't wear a mask to dinner nor to the Disco club. She's very concerned 😟 😨

Exactly, early on we were told to get vaccinated, to get our two shots and we would be all set and be protected against the virus. Months later we were told to get booster shots because the vaccines have lost most of their efficacy. Now they’re saying that the booster shots might not be enough to protect you against the Omicron virus. I read an article that Pfizer is trying to develop a new vaccine in less than 100 days to combat this super duper killer virus. So If the virus changes it’s ugly head every year, we’re going to be told to get a new vaccine each and every year? I lost my hearing temporarily with the second shot and my blood pressure got dangerously high. My sister was bedridden with high fever with the booster. It’s complete madness. It’s like an invasion of the body snatchers with these monster viruses.

Sorry, I didn't quite understand about the PCR test -- does it require all three genomic sequences to be detected in order to return a positive result? In other words, the test will not be able to pick up Omicron? Or it is enough to detect one sequence in order to return a positive result? ie. the PCR test is still able to detect omincron based on the presence of the remaining two genomic sequences?
