Are these the four vaccinated people? It would make sense that they would have milder cases. What I read was that since these people had milder cases, it suggests that the vaccine is still working on this variant. More data and information is needed, obviously.

Can anyone tell me with certainty that the specific variant can be determined using ANY current test available to the public? I thought the variant could only be determined using genetic sequencing, which is expensive, time-consuming, and not generally available for COVID patients. My wife works in a hospital and a few months ago when the Delta variant was the concern, they were told by management that the hospital recorded ALL positive COVID tests as Delta variant because it couldn't be determined. So, HOW DO WE KNOW that these new variants are actually being discovered in the wild??

Have you seen the official statement released by the covid-19 task force of the government of Botswana? They denied the claim about the allegedly HIV+ patient that you mentioned. They also pointed out that the variant was originally detected in 4 fully vaccinated travelers.
Not surprising. I lived in Botswana for a year. Their denial when in came to HIV was a huge problem. They didn't want to get tested, told they had, or admitt to their family if they did. They have an "I'd rather not know" attitude.
I recall years ago Montel Williams had a guest on his program. The guest claimed that HIV had been developed in a lab. He also went so far as to back his claim with such and such a book, page etc. in the Library of Congress. People being trusting ridiculed him. Now that we see covid was developed basically headed by the same people/ person, Fauci; not hard to believe.

If I have my story right, the 1918 influenza epidemic (Spanish Flu) ended rather abruptly (three-ish weeks) when it mutated to a variant that was much more infectious and not very deadly at all. That rapid spread provided immunity while not killing. It could be possible that this is the way covid-19 ends. Due to the fact that we do not know the severity of illness, this could be the variant that ends covid-19.

Hi Saxodrew, I hope you will not be offended but I feel I must respond to your post with some criticism, it exactly what ways does the one exclude the other?, why cannot both be true?, I would expect the grasping opportunists involve to be far more interested on how much cash they can grab before they are rumbled, why would they want to 'learn' anything?.
On the slowing or stopping the spread of course there is a great deal to learn so far no-one has learned anything, all the research and investigations that has been done for the last one hundred years since the great 'Spanish' flu pandemic has failed to find anything that works!.
There have been a significant number of studies showing that there are some things that can be established between epidemics, public health control measures that can be used to slow or even resist the penetration of an infectious disease but all must be active and deployed before the disease arrives, it would seem to me that having failed so miserably to do anything like that the best we could do is put up our hands and admit defeat but that is not the way politicians like to work.

It is possible to establish trained teams of observers in all ports of entry and departure that can alert each other if visibly infected people are entering or leaving and have them intercepted and interviewed, all their contacts identified and traced, all people with any symptoms quarantined at the site in interception and appropriate treatment offered, this was the standard recommendation before this Sars Cov 2 rocked up but was never implemented because it would cost too much to maintain it permanently, it would however go a long way to reduce the risk of all epidemic infectious disease not just this one and have been far more effective and much cheaper than all these silly vaccines that don't stop the spread at all!.

I had COVID end of August. I lost my sense of smell and it has slowly come back. What has now happened is that all bad smells have the same smell of sulphur. Anyone else experienced this

Just look at the hoops we are jumping through for a virus that at the moment is killing 0.3% of those testing positive . 75% of new uk cases are in the 10 -50 yr old groups yet the daily deaths a predominantly those above 75yrs old which means for the vast majority of the public you are not going to get seriously ill or die. 1600 daily deaths in the UK per day from a multitude of illnesses and age demographic versus 150 -200 daily covid deaths. So what about the other 1400 daily daily deaths do people not care about them.

I live in the United States. 2 years ago, before our first case of Covid, president Trump stated we had nothing to worry about, that if we got a case, we could handle it with no problem. Not read all 16k comments so not sure if this has been asked... but due to vaccination against a specific mutation does that let less dominant mutations take over?..looking at the data from Vaccination rollout we saw cases drop rapidly from alpha and beta etc..but then Delta seemed to come from knowhere..Is it a case that these variants are already in the community and as resistance from one mutation grows be it natural infection or vaccination the cases fall, infections fall which allows for another mutation to become dominant. It seemed the case with Delta...could this be the same with Omicron?
Hey John, I found the hypothesis about an HIV infected person providing an environment which selects for these mutations interesting. Wouldn't this be the same process for a vaccinated individual who catches covid has some antibody response but non neutralising thus creating an environment with selective pressure on the virus. Any thoughts?
No... HIV patients/sufferers have an immune system that is supressed. Hense the possibility of the virus being in that individual for months, and a very high viral load. It is just a theory though at this point. Vaccinated people would hav ethe ability to eliminate the virus either immediately or in a shorter time than those with no immunity knowledge of covid 19

I live in SA. The number cases of this variant is extremely low right now. This does not correlate to the increase overall in SA. Detection is not causation. It is likely that the case increases relates to relates to the recent country wide elections. Also SA typically has a flu season at this time. The winter prevalence hypothesis does not apply. Look at the historical data
60 from 600 passengers arriving on the last 2 flights from SA were tested positive.

Something I don't understand is, given that the O variant spike protein must be shaped radically differently from that of previous strains, how is it that vaccination with current vaccines results in milder cases of sickness-there must be a partial match?

Respiratory viruses are constantly mutating. That is their nature, which is why we haven't had a shot for them previously because they will change after a few months and we would need an entirely new shot. This has been what the experts in 'truth camp' have been expecting since this began. This 'variant panic' can basically go on forever.
Have you somehow missed the flu shot vaccines? They come out every year customized for the predicted set of which viruses will show up each year. They work, albeit not as well as the Covid-19 vaccines do.
The Covid vaccines have worked for ALL previous variants of Covid, other than *some* of the vaccines are a bit less effective. Eg: South Africa abandoned AZ (and gave it away to other countries who could use it) because its effectiveness against the SA variant was only 60%, and it was nowhere near as prevalent other places.
We DO NOT know whether Omicron is managing to break through any of our vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna, J&J or AZ) any worse than with any other Covid vaccine, because the vast majority of those showing up with Omicron are either completely unvaccinated or only have one shot, and there doesn't seem to be any real evidence it's any more severe than any other version. We'll know better in 1-2 weeks when the reports from various places are compiled and analyzed more carefully. They've literally known of it for only 3 days.

So we're pretty sure it's very contagious, we're decently sure the existing vaccines aren't that good against it, but we don't know how the disease progresses or how well existing treatments work. As before we cannot stop it, but maybe we can delay it somewhat by restricting international travel until we know how to approach this bug. The political situation makes this very hard though because many governments have gone down the route of treating the permission to travel and join social events as incentives to get vaccinated, while putting blame and pressure on the unvaccinated. New restrictions for everyone will be treated as a broken promise. The attempted solution as far as i can see is renewed drumming up of fear to prepare for the announcement, which leads to more damage to society which in turn makes the reaction to the next variant harder. It's quite the vicious circle.

We don’t know if it’s more transmissible. What we do know is it’s a new variant and that’s all. It may be like Delta or a may be a nothin mg burger. Basically a 27 minute video to say "we don't know yet" and exaggerate a graph that says there are 16 cases per million people in South Africa.
Because vaccines against COVID are not protecting from transmission fully. We should not rule out that this variant is the result of a mutated version because of the vaccine. Viruses are experts at adapting to their environment. I am looking forward to when this will be investigated.. and at the same time, I am baffled at why this is not put more into consideration.
Africa has very low vaccine rates so that’s likely not the case. We would’ve seen it first in a more heavily vaccinated country. Less than 1 out of 10 ppl are vaccinated in Africa. It’s like 4% rate of vaccination right now.
At this point I'm convinced it's all about not letting a good tragedy go to waste. A one size fits all influenza "vaccine" that doesn't prevent transmission is about as anti science as it gets.

Yes…the only thing that matters is a healthy immune system. Everything else is secondary and won’t help if your immune system is weak.
.. and cut out carbs and sugar. If we don’t tend to our microbiome and get metabolically healthy we won’t make it as more and more health challenges crop up as our climate changes. We must take responsibility for our health.
And lose weight! People with high BMIs CONSISTENTLY get sicker, more easily, and with worse results because their bodies do NOT produce enough antibodies, possibly because they're diluted by all the fat.
If you have trouble with losing weight, start cutting back on meats (that's getting easier as the cost is going up) and fats (like cheese!) and increase your less starchy vegetables dramatically.
You don't have to go full on plant-based, just make huge changes. It WILL work. Don't try to drop 100 lb in a month, just make changes, if you value your life and health.
It seems these gain of function experiments are far too risky to have any reason to persue. There should be a global health Conference and implement a worldwide ban on gain of function study, punishible by life in prison minimally to death depending on the type of study. We cannot manage when these get out of the lab, and they will always be at risk of escaping a controlled environment.

The first report I heard from South Africa from the national health minister said that they were seeing differences, and that the main difference was that they saw ONLY VERY MILD SYMPTOMS from the Omicron variant. Now, we're supposed to cower in our homes from it? Can anyone explain that?
