  • In this video I show my full process for TEMPO MAPPING in Pro Tools. Follow along as I build a custom click track for a song recorded without a click.
Recording an artist's performance without a click track can capture the natural essence and spontaneity of their music. However, when it comes to adding additional elements like drums and bass later on, syncing a click track to the artist's performance becomes essential.
Tempo mapping involves identifying beats and syncing them with the recording, adjusting as necessary to reflect the natural feel of the performance. It can be a tedious process, especially in sections where the performance deviates from a strict rhythm. But once you get the hang of it it's not too difficult, and I find it's well worth the effort as you get the best of both worlds: an authentic, flowing, natural performance from the artist, and a perfectly synchronized tempo map and click track to use during overdub sessions. It's a win win!

Could it be helpful to throw a mic up and record yourself tapping along with a drum stick or something? Then you can use the clearer spikes on that track for tricky sections, being that you can tap along really well..

Absolutely! That's a great trick I do sometimes as well - love it! And certainly if there were drums recorded as part of the initial non-clicked performance I would be referencing kick and snare transients instead of the guitar haha, for sure. But yeah, I sometimes will record my own voice or claps as a guide track for tricky sections, exactly as you mentioned! 🙌
