    Pro Tools is the "industry standard" because of the corporate capture of the music education industry since 1997. Pro Tools systems were "donated" to schools so that it was the only DAW taught in schools. Just like Microsoft has done.

    • @PrantoKoX
      @PrantoKoX 2 роки тому +7

      Exactly.👍 That, plus the fact that the merging/buyover with Avid suddenly made it brand linked and a "must" (for NO technical reason whatsoever) for film & TV studios. Plus their absurd tying the software to specific and very expensive hardware through the years makes it very, very hard for professionals & studios especially in America who have invested thousands in Avid/Digidesign stuff and are chained to their thievish auto-update subscription payments to now say "Ah, well, yeah, let's let all of that go now."
      Psychlogy, ego, and geography. Oh, and marketing.

      Yeah this is just not true. As someone who worked for Leo’s Pro Audio/Spitzers Music in the 90’s, California Recording Institute and co founded NorCal DJMPA in the early 2000’s Protools was never given away to schools. It was taught because it was adopted by studios from day 1. Not sure where you got that info from but yeah it’s totally incorrect,

      @@PrantoKoX again this isn’t true. Pro Tools was used by audio post production studios because it could slave to sony 9pin. A very technical reason that no other daw could do.

      @PrantoKoX 2 роки тому +3

      @@RussArteaga Yes - but IIRC it was the Digidesign hardware that synced & slaved to the 9 pin Sony ACE protocol interfaces, not a merit of the software itself. In EU we did it with in other ways, not just in video editing, but in mastering (to U-Matic tapes & machines), too.

    • @enemysub9057

      @@RussArteaga Yeah, it was actually Apple who "donated" the gear to the education industry on which Pro Tools was developed for. Funny thing is the popularity of both the Mac and Pro Tools kind of comes from the fact that the Mac was so underpowered that it needed to be hitched to powerful Pro Tools DSP hardware which could do all the heavy lifting. It's funny because people would buy a Mac and Pro Tools thinking it would give them some advantage when they were relying upon native processing.

    I used to work on Pro Tools for many years and I wholly agree about the editing. I use Reaper now for all of my professional projects and I even mapped all of the editing macros to be the same as Pro Tools. I also love how I can have more than one session open at a time in Reaper, so handy for instances where I want to just copy SFX or a music cue from another session. I'm a full time songwriter/producer working mainly in the Latin tropical/Reggaeton scenes, and also some Latin pop and rock. I'm also starting to work on music for film and documentaries.
    It is SIMPLY IMPOSSIBLE to work without Pro Tools on any of those scenes. Film audio mixers down here will simply not accept stems: they demand a PT session. Most tropical producers don't know there are other DAWs out there. I work remotely with a lot of American clients and you'd be surprised how many commercial recording facilities in the US are unable to export their PT sessions as stems, or import stems into PT.
    So I'm not a fan of Pro Tools, I do all my songwriting and producing/programming on Logic Pro X, but... I pay my monthly subscription because I need to work with other people. PT may be unnecessarily clunky and crashy but it's a fact of life.

      I use only reaper. I Founded my own Sound For Film Company and we have a little inside joke about PT being banned from all of our facilities.
      if they ask for a PT session we just Save a copy, Print in place all of the items
      and then convert it to a Ptx file using Vordio. Voila!
      easy as cake, and no one even dares to complain.
      Using PT just because everyone else is doing it is just lame.
      why the F would I use an overbloated, overpriced, slow, underdeveloped, nasty, crashy, POS, that always tends to slow me down, or let mi hanging, while taxing me with the burden of paying an exagerated amount of money for less tools and capabilities
      when I can use one of the MANY alternatives that are not only cheaper, but more stable, flexible, and overall more capable in any way shape or form
      (today all daws can do the same integration with hardware just the same or even better)
      Standards are meant to be changed when new better alternatives arrive!
      so why live in the stone age, when we can rise the standard to something good instead of something shitty?

    Huge fan of your channel! I'd like to see a "Why Pro Tools (the leading DAW in modern recording studios) is good for hardware but still sucks at anything else! Like 20 years ago" video...Cause I really can't explain all the bad stuff about AVID (as a company) and the fact that other DAWs that cost a freaking fraction of PT's price, are delivering crazy updates, so fast that PT would never catch them up even in 20 years. Those features really speed up our workflow a lot (either production, MIDI, recording, mixing, or whatever else), I'm not talking about silly stuff. I think that at this point, it's more convenient switching DAW (from commercial studio to our personal studio) than keeping Pro Tools for compatibility with commercial studios. Mixing in something like Studio One is so faster and easier that you will still save time, also if you have to bounce the multitrack from PT and import it into Studio One. I know you're a smart guy, just try other DAWs out if you haven't done it yet. I used PT like you for 10 years before switching to Studio One, you're right the editing might be a bit better in PT but everything else is on a totally different level.

Hardware was way to heavy on my computer. (Mind you I recently updated with my ram so I get that part). I’m around young engineers daily and they all agree protools is absolutely garbage.! Only people that still vouch for it is old heads who don’t know anything else. Im 31 so I guess I’m in that category now lol. Studio one is taking over. It’s simply to use. You can watch tutorials for the specific functions you need but other than that the daw is self explanatory. Great workflow that can be customizable for everyone and anything. I believe it will soon be over for avid especially since they went subscription base (SMH)
    Lastly I will say don’t be scared to use new tech. Times are changing. I said the same thing about tic toc and now it’s the biggest platform for music. I highly recommend studio one but to be honest. It’s not about the DAW

I contacted avid about the situation and the representative literally mocked me as if someone would pay $700.00 for something and not own it... especially a studio program! when I expressed me displeasure with his ignorance they tried to pacify me with a (one time license) like that was going to make me forget that I just payed $1100.00 on a polished turd that I couldn't even step on because I didn't own it!!! I still have that license and I have yet to activate because I am so discussed with that situation and I wouldn't use that program if it was free! good thing I bought Studio one about the same time and realized that it was much easier to use and you can do everything that you can do in pro tools but easier and I'm tempted to say its better... I really like Reason's rack system and synth arrays, mixing was clunky to me. I used to use Cubase to run our live shows, now we use Ableton. I was drawn to Ableton's arrangement features, but it operates so differently from Cubase that I haven't been able to get into the flow. Tried a few others for some specific features, but overall meh. ProTools always just felt like a default option - like people keep using it simply because so many people keep using it. In all my years of talking to other producers, I have yet to hear anyone say ProTools inspires them to create. Hell, even FL Studio seems to have that one covered better.

    Great presentation, Colt. These discussions often come with a bit of . . . emotion. My first experience with a DAW was in College, and yes, it was Pro Tools. My Pro Tools class professor was none other than Frank Cook himself. When the time came for me to open my own studio, I went with Pro Tools. Then came the issues - oh boy! I finally reached out to some producer friends, who really made me question my needs. I settled on Apple's Logic Pro X. I'm very, very happy with that decision. Each producer/studio owner has to take an honest evaluation of their needs and expectations. In the end, there really is no "wrong" path. As long as you reach your goal, no one cares how you got there. AND - bottom line: no one ever won, or was snubbed a Grammy depending on a DAW.

    oh boy.... your arguments are quite poor and not relevant anymore. I've worked on Protools for years, decade even, and I tested pretty much every DAW on the market (but Digital Performer, for no particular reason)... and all I can say is that every DAW do pretty much the same thing, just differently, each DAW have their own way to do things, but they can pretty much do it just as well, just as fast, it's just a matters of knowledge and habits. However, in 2022, there's absolutely NO NEED for any particular DAW whatsoever, not even Protools... just use whatever you want, but you don't have to have Protools anymore like it was still the case like 10 years ago... to be honest, these days, if you're working with producers out there, you'd better off by having Logic Pro, Cubase Pro, Studio One, Ableton Live or even FL Studio (if you're doing lot of electronic music)... but Protools? Nobody cares about it anymore... beside some couple of studios that just use an old Protools 10 HD because they didn't upgrade their system. It's getting even worse now that Avid is pushing for subscription only... if you don't know that professionals are moving away from Protools, you didn't hang out much with producers and engineers out there. I don't know much that still want to stay on Protools and the only reason they got an update is to stay compatible with their old projects... but most of them are using something else for every new project.

    Working in Music then transitioning into Film has enabled me to try so many different DAW’s. I dont hate pro-tools, but there are so many DAW’s that surpassed Avid with convenient features. The only thing that is honestly keeping Pro-tools in front is their large market share.
    But I’ve found my home on Reaper. Yes it is like buying car parts and building you’re own vehicle, but when its done, you become sorta jaded against other programs.
    I just finished a film with 253 tracks. Just for giggles, I wanted to see how far I could take its performance. In the end, I was able to mix the vocals, foley, music, and include ADR, with 5.1 surround. Not one track was bounced or frozen. I even had other sessions open just to copy and paste tracks. And in the end, I can multi render stems for film distribution requirements.
    All of my undo’s are unlimited, and saves on a separate file. Sometimes I used the undo history just see how many hours I spent on a session lol.

    As someone who used to make a living editing audio, and as someone who has tried just about every other major DAW out there, Pro Tools is still the best at editing...it is SO fast. When I have to edit in another piece of software, I map the PT focus command keys to that software (if I can) to mimic the speed of trackball in the right hand and key commands in the left. It's not just the choice of keys, but also the way the multitool works, and the fact that you can edit down to the sample right there in the arrange window. Other DAWs toy with these features, but they seem so determined *not* to copy PT when it comes to editing, it's infuriating. I also have to second the latency discussion. It just works.
    That said, complaints about Avid's business model, lack of M1 compatibility, and MIDI functionality are legit (one can get used to work on MIDI in PT, but there are so many DAWs that do it so much better.)
    I compose in PT thanks to the editing functionality...give me that level and ease of editing natively in your DAW, and I will move to your DAW. The multi-tool, the natural key setup, and frankly just the visual feedback on waveforms and zero points crossings on Pro Tools are just better.
      Everyone just loves to hate on PT, and yes, it deserves some of that hate, but for editing audio for things like video game dialogue, PT is just faster and vastly superior than anything else out there.

    Love ur content .. but I gotta say u are mistakin about the pros of using protools. You can use large consoles with other daws and run 96 plus channels. I was doing this in 2007 in sonar aka cakewalk. You have been able to do this in many daws for many years. I can do it in studio one. Also u talk about next to no latency I have had that for many many years with other daws. That comes down mostly to computer power. I would challenge any pro tools user on a Mac up against my system on windows running studio one. I have my buffer set to 16 or 32 for 99.9% of the time giving me around 1.5 mil seconds of round trip latency. My default template has 48 channels with plugins loaded on every channel and a buffet set to 16. Very fast. Only when about 100 plus plugind running do I need to up my buffer up. And that doesnt often happen till later stages of mixing. When it comes to editing speed and work flow that is all preferences..... but I can honestly say that pro tools really has way more clicks and menus to do things than most other daws. I have used about 90% of the daws out there and really pro tools has not improved there UI in more than a decade. It's very clunky and outdated. If you like it great. Just wanted to let you know that some of the pros you talk about are just not true when u say other daws don't do that as well. Keep up the great work Colt.

    The only reason to use Pro Tools in 2023 is because you bought into it years ago and are now experiencing Stockholm Syndrome. I get it some old dudes are set in their ways and learning new tricks "is HARD." And lets face it its like having a designer handbag at this point, it cost a lot but it does the same thing as a plastic bag from the grocery store! It dose however serve as a status symbol for obtaining DAW dumb clients. And yes I do have pro tools but only because I actually own it but I have completely moved onto another DAW that is far more used friendly and doesn't rape you in prescription fees. I do use the PRO TOOLS logo on my screen though as a client pacifier.

    Pro Tools was the first…and got the best marketing name. Then they phoned it in for 20 years while everyone passed them by with features and reliability. But… they are still the “standard” because it’s easier to stay the course than have everyone using different DAW’s.

    great video!
    elaborated answer: because entire industries (speaking from experience with the film industry) is built around PT, more or less… it’s extremely difficult to switch. Thanks to social media the term “audio professional” has become so SO! widely associated with people that are actually beatmakers, youtubers, bedroom producers, etc. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, there are some incredible people out there, but some of us that work in film or music studios, that have tons of gear, consoles, systems and processes hooked up and routed with PT in mind already can’t really “just buy another DAW bruh” like your average dude on UA-cam might suggest, whoops sorry, not sorry.😅 Don’t get me wrong - AVID’s pricing/business model is complete BS. It’s expensive, it’s not with the customer in mind first, it’s expensive. However, believe it or not, it’s more expensive to restructure to a completely different system in a complex studio/production company. Why? Well, the time it’s needed to do that properly is a time where you have projects, deadlines and clients waiting - basically time, people, and money left on the table. It sucks that AVID still have such a monopoly, especially in the film industry (and they know it, but still behave like corporate bastards), but it’s best to just learn to deal with it. For the time being it’s better to keep on working with what you know and just put out music/films, leaving clients happy and bringing money home, than go though a whole lot just for some eventual convenience at some point potentially quite far down the line. 😄 Hope that sheds some light! Of course, if you’re not working on a commercial film/music project that requires collaboration in a whole bunch of different studios, stick to the DAW you love and know best and just don’t think about it! :)

      Thats what it bothers me when people just say "just buy a new daw bruh". I do understand that big studios cant waste time learning and having a big fuss on the hardware. They want the product, they dont care where it comes from as long as the product is made as intended. Hence why avid will never learn and will never change because they re backed up by these huge studios. The small producer doesnt give them much money anyway, hence why they changed to a subscription model. That way they can have more people trying it out and putting a few more millions in the pocket, even if the small guys dont hang out long. As someone who wants to work in orchestral composition for film and gaming, its hard to think about having to learn PT because I have no choice

Pro Tools is like Apple, simple, no bells and whistles, but the features that it has WORK WELL. It’s a tool for professionals, not a toy DAW cluttered with unnecessary features.

All what you mention, you can do with Cubase, especially is very easy to do all hardware routing, easiest than with Pro Tools. I didn't even mention editing or midi functions etc. I'm mixing and running 32 out of the box channels, with all compressors, effects etc. with Cubase in my studio witouth any latency. Also, I saw many times you were disapointed with ProTools..crashing or not working..never happend to me with Cubase. If we talking about moving projects from one studio to another , here in Europe, all studios have Cubase, but if you need to transfer project to your DAW you can export project in OMF or AAF file and I don't see reason why use Pro Tools in 2022. It was the best DAW before 20 years, but not anymore.

I much prefer Cubase, as they stay very state of the art and provide many things in my daily work flow (with obscene amounts of analog gear) that Pro Tools has never done. Latency compensation at mix time, for example was always so terrible on PT. It’s also nothing for me to batch export files in Cubase to work with any DAW, too. I’ve seen you post your battling of all kinds of frustrating PT’s issues, Colt and all while having zero problems and hammering down here without any lag or downtime from my rig. For you and I, our time can be serious money and I have no patience for the things I’ve seen you go through to have a DAW that can’t do the things that Cubase can and has for years. I was a Pro Tools engineer in Nashville, and the surrounding areas from 1999 to 2002 I lived in White House Tn there were 6 of us back then that had our own Pro Tools rigs and we made the mistake of only teaching everyone 1 DAW. I only owned One PT rig but some of the other guys had multiple rigs. I mostly worked with the contemporary christian artists in Hendersonville and for a few producers in town. But it was thought that only one DAW would be needed for session sharing that was if I was booked my client could take the session to another PT engineer in town. Pro Tools was nothing more than a playback machine (a glorified ADAT) So you were basically renting the Producer or Artist your quote Tape Machine. Pro Tools was never the best DAW it was just the most compatible with multichannel i/o back then. You could at least playback 16 or 24 channels from Pro Tools so mixes could be done from an SSL or some other console in town. Digidesign (pre-Avid) was super locked down back then. But it was our fault. Some PT engineers became greedy and thought that they were more important than everyone else in town. So the studios decided it was cheaper to maintain their own rigs and PT engineers compared to hiring us. I can't wait for someone like Behringer to BUY OUT Avid's audio division and hear what the BIG STUDIO have to say then? It will eventually happen. But back then PT was the only DAW that had more than 16 i/o and was stable due to hardware acceleration but in the modern era use whatever you like. Most likely if you are going to a commercial studio it's for tracking and for the analog so if you have to use PT at least know enough to record and bounce out files to work with later. It less common for anyone to mix in a commercial space unless you own that commercial studio. But you could always just take your computer with you to a studio and use whatever you prefer along with the great analog gear and microphones at commercial spaces. Cheer Great video Colt!

While all of the rest like Cubase Logic and even hardware based DAW like Fairlights's MFX digital audio workstation it wasn't until Fairlight made the Dream Constellation in 2004 digital audio workstation with integrated audio control surface and dedicated mixing console could any DAW output more than 24 analog outputs to a console. That was when Cubase and Logic and the rest of the DAWs moved to 48 outputs so they could complete with multi tape machine setus for post audio for the movie industry. But after 2004 DAWs moved really fast and now we can have 128 outputs on any daw and you are only limited but the i/o converters you have.

    Protools is the defacto standard for movie mixing and foley editing. Why? Because it was adopted by the industry and evolved with the industry, is like the Photoshop for audio. For film/trailer composition is Logic but in that department there are also composers using other DAWs.
    I used Protools in my days when I had no other job but foley editing, for that job Protools is quite efficient. The guy recording the foley and the guy mastering the whole movies were also using Protools so everything was streamlined.
    Do I like Protools? Yes is nice for those things.

I only use Logic now but I do have love for Pro Tools. The same can not be said for Avid. They require you to pay for customer service / support calls, which blew my mind when I found that out. Also, the price is ridiculous - up to $1000 PER YEAR. How long will Avid be ubiquitous? I think the mighty will fall before too long, despite its choke-hold on the big studios. The more affordable options (Logic is $200 for LIFE with free updates) will take over eventually, or force Avid to adapt.

    • @kennyartois
      @kennyartois Рік тому +1

      Logic is only $200 for life because apple owns it and it’s not how they make their money. Avid makes most of its money from PT and I/O but I/O has died off over the years due to the apollos and others are stepping up and filling the needs that engineers have been complaining about for years. If AVID would only listen to their customers they still be on top. But since they don’t things have changed drastically! I have been in PT for 12 years, and have been using Ableton for production, and ProTools for mixing. If Ableton & ProTools made a baby it would be game over.

    Love your channel and vids Colt, but you’re out of your mind(joking) believing Protools is the best DAW for editing!! logic and studio one blow Protools out of the water in editing functionality from my experience. I believe protools is still the most popular among large studios as you mentioned with the analog integration but also they were first out of the gate and studios are now more or less stuck with it because every studio has it as you mentioned, and heavily invested in it. No one wants to be left out of business because they don’t have the “ industry standard”. If all the DAWs we have today were available and released at the same time years ago, I don’t think there would be a standard DAW as each offer unique tools.. AVID captured the market at the right time and place it seems and are still lucky enough after all these years for it to be standard in large studios. It’s also hard to imagine a company such as AVID not being M1 compatible, that is a little ridiculous for the “industry standard” after 2 years.

    Back in 1995 when I bought my first DAW, there were a few on the market and at that time you could hear the difference between the DAW's. I went with Sonic Solutions which was the only one that was 24bit. I could hear the difference between ProTools and Sonic. I was also going into film sound design and post. Sonic's ability in editing was far better than the others at the time. Too bad Sonic decided go into DVD mastering instead of sticking to sound. From there I went to Wave Frame because it was the closest to Sonic Solutions, but Wave Frame then turned in to Merging Technologies. I was on Merging for a few years, and I loved Merging but the cost was just too high. Sonic Solutions and Merging were both like Swiss army knives and you could set up your work space any way you want. Then I went to ProTools and just go frustrated with the crashes and just how unelegant it was to edit on ProTools. Now I am on Reaper, just because I can set up my work space as I want it and I am able to use OSC to control Reaper. All my plugin shortcuts are on my Android pad and I don't have to search for things. In sound time is money, the faster you can do something without thinking the faster and better it gets done. ProTools seemed to always screw up my creative juices. I wish Avid would focus more on what we need as a DAW than how they can make the most money from us. If ProTools in any way was far superior to all the other DAW I would have been on it long before and I would still be on it. I am very happy with Reaper, it has saved me at least 2 hours on every mix. So it is making me money as well.
