  • JZ Microphones on vocals are a no-brainer. The V67, V12, and Black Hole BH2 have become staples in my studio over the past few years. They're built like tanks, are perfectly priced, have a unique design, and -- most importantly -- sound fabulous on virtually every sound source.
When members of my online community, Mix Protégé, were having trouble deciding between these three ‪@JZMicrophones‬ models as their main vocal mic, I made this quick video to demonstrate each mic's subtle differences. It's a basic demo using only my speaking voice as a sound source, but I hope you will find it helpful in your own vocal mic pursuit!

The differences between these three mics (on my voice, in this video) are subtle -- especially if you’re listening on phone or laptop… which kinda proves an important point I often reiterate to folks struggling to decide on “the best vocal mic”.
The pro audio pundits of the internet would have you believe that the fate of your future recordings hangs in the balance of one critical decision: finding “the perfect vocal mic”. Don’t believe the hype. At the very least, don’t get paralyzed fearing you’ll make the “wrong choice” and will be stuck forever with a mic that makes you sound poopy.
The fact is these days there are so many incredible microphones on the market in a variety of price ranges. If you’re considering a mic purchase - especially if it’s your first - HERE ARE A FEW THINGS TO REMEMBER:
🎤 Chances are, all the mics you’re considering are great and you’ll find happiness.
🎤 There will be more microphones in your future; this is just one.
🎤 I’ve never met a mic I didn’t have a great time using and felt satisfied with the result, unless it’s broken or needs repair.
🎤 Sometimes inexpensive mics outperform expensive ones. “Vintage” and/or “expensive” isn’t always better.
If I only had ONE microphone and knew I’d be using it on a wide variety of sound sources I’d choose a large-diaphragm condenser, preferably with multiple polar patterns and a 10dB pad (otherwise fixed cardioid would do just fine).
=== All three of these excellent JZ mics fit that description and I would be perfectly happy with any one of them as my “one and only” all-purpose mic.

Hey Dana, do you have any videos on recording an acoustic singer songwriter live (vocals and acoustic at the same time)? I feel like you’d be a very trustworthy source for learning how to do that!

I have worked on two original U-67s and that V67 sounds very similar to those. I agree - your voice sounds better to me on the V67. In my very humble opinion - after hearing all three - I liked the V67 best! The V12 sounds warmer but also I noticed a lot of low end "slight P-Pops" or rumble - probably due to the added Low End. Both mics sound wonderful! I have heard on-line the BH-1, also Killer Sounding. I purchased an Amethyst, when they first came out, which was purported to sound like a U-67. That's a Big "Nope". Very disappointed in it. I wish that I had gotten a V67. I am very familiar with Vintage Mics, as I have been doing this since Dec 18, 1972. Ahh! Yeah - 51 years ago - yesterday! I have a Real vintage Telefunken ELA-M 250 which Telefunken USA told me was "hands down The Best One we have ever heard." But - yeah, your mics sound Amazing.

Hey Rafael! Wow, I'd love to hear that ELAM 250 - bet it's amazing! And so cool your history working with all my favorite vintage mics. I own a vintage U67, which has always been my fav all-purpose "sounds great on everything" mic. When the JZ V67 came out I was like, "I need to try that" and it blew me away. I should prob do a U-67 vs V67 video at some point. I've never analyzed them side-by-side, as I never personally felt the need to ... like you, I'm so familiar w the U-67 sound that when I first spoke into a V67 wearing headphones, I was like, "yep, yes, thumbs up, yes please, thank you, i'll take it!" hahaha.
