    Excellent advice, especially, "If you don't already have the kind of work you want in your portfolio, then make it." That's largely how I landed my first contract job at Microsoft (which then turned into full time). I created a FUI design (the kind of UI you see simulated on device screens in movies) and added that to my real-world work portfolio. When the art director saw that one piece, she said, "That! That's what I wanted to see..." It got me hired. Changed my whole career.

      Great story and outcome indeed. Do you have a portfolio? Would love to learn a little more about your journey as well. You still around at Microsoft?

    Coming from a full-time UI/UX Designer, your first designs put my first ones to shame 😅 You at least had a sense of alignment. Most of my early work looks like a bad modern art piece that would be shown in a third world country. Anyway, what I love about your story is how you picked each goal stemming from a passion point of view instead of mainly business. although business sense is important, I believe you had the right roots to grow.

      @@Mizko Underrated comment. I've heard Asian parents can be hardcore about career choices. But think about the day you can pay their mortgage/rent if you so choose! I've met an Asian web entrepreneur who claims this single accomplishment as the greatest highlight of his professional career. I digress, but...,I like Mizko learned as a child to make stuff on the web (in it's infancy - the 90's if we're being serious). It made my career - it made my life. If I were a high school teacher I'd share this video with every one of my students. The point being -- Learn how to build something on the web to support one of your passions. You'll learn marketing by experience, and will find yourself very marketable. Most of the stars I've met in my career started out this same way.

    All your advices work in your country but it's so different in others like in France. Even in Paris, having a job as a UX/UI Designer is very difficult, I'm even wondering if I will not move to US to take experiences. I have a master degree in digital creation with UX major when I was in a bachelor. The problem is that I don't have experiences in UX. I even did sandwich courses, so I was working as an employee for 3 years but as a graphic designer. In France, every companies want someone with 3-4 experiences in UX and they even look your degree. It's crazy.

    Hi Mizko, I love your story! May I ask how you overcome the NDA projects? Most of my project I signed NDA, so it's a slow process to get enough useful projects that I can show in the portfolio... I wish to use my portfolio to land a position that I wish as well!

    • @Mizko
      @Mizko  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Liz! Thank you. Great question. What I've always done is that I'll STILL create a case study section on my portfolio and display the projects I have worked on. Instead of showing everything, I just show 1 screen and say it's coming soon. This way you have JUST enough to show prospects what you can achieve but you're not breaching anything major.
      If you REALLY have to.. create side projects. Similar to what I did. Design and create your own projects to showcase from end-to-end.
