OECD testing reveals drastic decline in students' maths and reading skills

- The maths and reading skills of 15-year-olds has drastically declined in Australia over the past two decades according to a global test.
The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results were published on Tuesday revealing the drop in academics.
The drop in maths and reading skills is being attributed to a range of factors from teacher shortages, to distractions from digital devices as well as the ongoing impact of school closures as a result of COVID.
While the Australian score in science has increased slightly it remains 20 per cent below the performance of students in 2006.
Twenty points is seen as equivalent to a year of learning.
The OECD has been conducting the test since 2000.
The government will try to throw more money into schools again…I remember my primary school didn’t have lots of money but excellent teachers

Just heard on the radio here in New Zealand we are in exactly the same place with ours dropping heaps. This must mean that we really are 1st cousins.

you compare tv interviews from the 90‘s, 80‘s and go back further you can immediately tell people read more they‘re a lot more well spoken. And the teacher shortage argument I just can‘t, what was the avg class size in the 50‘s? If you have discipline, respect and a focus on what‘s relevant a large amt of students isn‘t a problem. What we have today is the exact opposite, chaos, distractions, unattentiveness, you have teachers who have to raise the children instead of the parents, focus on useless fake woke subjects, participation trophies,
a complete total mess, results as expected, conservatives have been sounding the alarm bells for decades!!
Basically you now see what happens when women take over the education system.
Millennials and Gen Z is worst generation. Every metric is diabolical. Anxiety, gender confusion, eco anxiety, social media addictions, no social skills, many addicted to online gaming or pornography, obese, no concentration.....This generation to decide the future? No. Leading to armageddon, utter complete chaos. They are the failed generation. Some say the pronoun generation
Blame needs to be placed where it belongs "Critical Pedagogy" doesn't teach, it indoctrinates. We should be teaching critical thinking.

School performance means nothing. They are too young. Test on adults.

Maybe it's because the size of classrooms since the 90s have went from 19 on avg to 36 students per one teacher. It's not how the content is being taught it's how the parents aren't backing teachers up and putting efforts in at home to assist there child's education. It's because our country is so over populated that our education and health system along with housing has completely went to garbage. Since the 90s these have been issues being ignored and now we are seeing the results of them. This isn't anything about the teachers this is all about the lazyness in children who care about cheating in video games compared to actually learning anything beneficial. The fact everyone under 30 is relying on social media and lack actual aspirations. I feel bad teachers putting all this effort in just so parents can turn around ignore the work they have to put in and just allow there lazy kids to not put actual efforts in. I feel bad for the students who are trying but unable to get the assistance needed due to the overwhelming number of kids in each class. We need to stop funding private systems and deny not for profit exploitation and start focusing on our public systems since the 90s this has been an issue
