Good analysis! I just watched it, and even tho the movie does have great cinematography, performances and soundtrack, I was feeling quite bored at the end of it, just wanting it to be finished. I see people saying it may be the year's best movie, but I see it having some flaws that didn't sit well with me. I think it's a good movie but definitely not the greatest movie.
I was much higher on it with my first watch even through I had pretty much the same list of issues. I went back for a second watch and most of them disappeared. The bear spray fall was still awkward, but the epilogue holds the film together after the initial twists are all known. I can't say it was better, and certainly not as fun, but it did feel like a more complete movie on second watch.
I agree with alot of what you had to say. I feel like they were trying too hard to make this movie special. In doing so, a lot of it felt unnatural or forced. I thought the two lead did a great job and the scenes where they were talking were great. However, some of the supporting actors were not great. A few of the scenes with the cops were not great. And some of the dialogue with the old couple was weird. Overall I enjoyed it, but I don't think this is something I'd recommend to the average movie goer. Are you going to see the new Alien movie?
I've heard such mixed reviews I'm a little tempted just to see what it's all about. But I'm not planning on it, doesn't really seem like my kinda thing. As a whole I tend to stay away from franchise movies like that unless there's a filmmaker I like who worked on it.
I'm just gonna say it, this movie was bad. It was EXTREMELY boring and predictable, it goes nowhere. The characters have no charisma or depth. The whole movie feels like a movie trailer. I couldn't recommend it to anybody, honestly just skip it, there are better movies to watch in october. The substance was AMAZING. If you're looking for something to check out for this month here are a few off the top of my head that are really fun watches that are overlooked. Mandy - Nothing like it, fever dream of a movie. 1408 - One of the few movies that genuinely gives me the creeps, top notch psychological horror, one of the best. Toxic Avenger 1-4 - The king of camp, inspired so many movies and characters lowkey. It somehow manages to be a feel good movie while being extremely grotesque and disturbing at the same time. Kind of like evil dead 2-3 in that respect. Troma movies are their own genre. Upstream Color - This is not exactly a horror, but I guess you could argue that it's a psychological horror mixed with a little body horror. Extremely bizarre, takes a few watches to really understand what's going on but that's the fun of it. Definitely disturbing. Annihilation - I don't know why critics didn't like this, it leans more towards science fiction but I never hear anybody recommend this one. It's a really fun movie.
I went in blind, got the spoiler at the description at the beginning 😂

It’s hard to recommend this movie to friends when it’s a spoiler to describe any element of the plot.

It's not based on a true story? I thought it was inspired by Aileen Wournos.

Nah, it was a really good movie. Substance was awful, feminist trope
