Takes back home. Mom's been gone for years now and this video took back in her kitchen with wonderful memories. I still haven't mastered her technique, but their still yummy! Thank you!
I prefer fried green tomatoes that have just begun to turn red. They have a richer, more tangy flavor. Fried Green tomatoes are my very favorite fresh garden food.
Love this video. My mama taught me to cube the green tomatoes, cube a Vidalia onion, but to slice a yellow squash. Toss in a bowl firstly with salt and pepper and then with about 1/4 cup cornmeal. You can add a Tablesppon of flour, if desired. This is a WINNING combination. Fry it just as you did. We have this all summer long. Hope y'all try it!
Yes! Indeed Southerners Love Fried and Fresh Green Tomatoes and We also Love a Tomato , Mayo S&P SANDWICHES!! THAT SANDWICH IS ALL I NEED AT TIMES YUMMY😊
I love a good fried green tomato! Yours look amazing! My Memaw and Mama made (not sure what it is called, we just referred to it as a fried vegetable medley. You cube potatoes, diced onion, green tomatoes, zucchini or yellow squash, as close to same size as possible. Start with potatoes first then add other veggies in. Fry slow until vegetables are tender but not mushy. Season with salt & pepper and just before we it finishes frying sprinkle with cornmeal. It is fresh and delicious! Ive read that it was just named "all" ? Anyway, of course best fried in bacon grease 😊
Tom if you will slice your tomatoes and pIace them on a cookie sheet... salt them and let them sit for a while it pulls some of the liquid from the tomatoes. Then do your breading They fry much better. And the salt soaks in the tomatoe instead of outside the tomatoe.
My mom was born and raised in southern Arkansas. I loved my mom's cooking. I loved Fried Green Tomatoes! But I don't garden. Both my folks did😊. I watch your videos and have picked up some great tips and recipes. Thank you. Take care of each other.
Hello Arkansas.. I'm from North Little Rock. My PawPaw had a huge garden and we did a lot of canning and freezing. MawMaw made really good tomatoes..she also used flour.
I am out west and tried my first fried green tomatoe about 5 yrs ago. I did not know what i had been missing! I now search out green tomatoes and do it just like you are ❤
We love fried green tomatoes! So glad to hear about your experience with them that you enjoyed so much. Hope you're having a great night. Thanks so much for watching our channel.
The first time I tried frying green tomatoes the flour wouldn't stick to them. I was wondering what I did wrong and now I realized that I missed a step which was dipping them in the beaten eggs first. Thank you again for this recipe. You're always cooking something I like.
Loved this video. I have always fried mine in corn meal and often bacon grease. I have green tomatoes sitting on my counter now and will give this method a try!
Funny how everyone does green tomatoes differently. In our area, (Indiana), we just use self-rising flour, salt, and pepper...no egg, no cornmeal. And I agree with your friend. I have to have a little bit of red on mine. All green tastes too 'green' to me! These look perfect. Now you are making my mouth water. I've only had one mess so far this year. These look so good!! A restaurant in our area serves that fried green tomato BLT. It is so tasty! I like mine on white Wonder Bread with butter and salt!
Absolutely, it's a matter of personal preference about what type of tomatoes to use. I will say that I have enjoyed a fried green tomato BLT sandwich before. Those are fabulous!
I totally get your preference of tomatoes that have NOT begun to ripen even slightly. They taste difference to me too! I had a huge garden back in the day and canned. We never fixed friend green tomatoes until the end of season when the heat was gone but still had green tomatoes in the vine. Those were the very best for frying. We also had a great pickling recipe for green tomatoes.
I love green tomatoes they are so yummy. I have eaten these for years. I pray you keep sharing to help family's get back into cooking at home, and stop wasting so much money on fast food.
I just finished supper but now I'm hungry for fried green maters! I do about 3 parts corn meal to 1 part flour & fry them in bacon grease. But I'm with you, the greener the better. And YESSSS to the bacon mater "sammiches" hehehe. I wish so bad I had a gas stove. I miss that so much. Years ago I was watching a friend of mine's kids while they went on a cruise. I had the kids run out to the garden and pick me some green tomatoes & I fried em up. 2 of the 3 kids loved em, the other one not so much. I considered that a success.
Yeah, we southerners take credit for these originally. 😊 However, the first time I had them was at Tamarack, the Arts and Crafts Center in WV. Our favorite fried green tomato restaurant closed, so I'm looking forward to making mine! We like ours with a spicy mustard sauce (Just mustard, tabasco, sour cream, and mayo). I hope you try it and like it! Thanks!
I have eaten these since I was a kid (in my mid 70's now). Love them. It use to be you liked them or you didn't. However, since the Covid thing came out many people were trying to cook at home that never use to. They started gardening, and had a lot of tomatoes. So they tried them and now they are eating them. Thinking it's a new thing, but it isn't. It's an old dish a little tart, but I think they thought it would taste more like a red tomato. Now I am hearing that many more like the fried ones! I have never tried a GFT sandwich with bacon before, just always just had the fried as a side dish. Never dipped it in a sauce, as I liked them just as they are fried. Love from Western, N.Y.
It was great hearing from you. We are always so tickled to try something we thought we wouldn't care for and then like it. Like the folks you described during the pandemic who tried FGT for the first time and found them to their liking. It's a wonderful moment for the taste buds! I have ate fried green tomatoes all my life. Always used cornmeal and flour. My husband and I went to Capronis restaurant in Maysville years ago. They served them with of all things, salsa! My husband and daughter always has to have it with their fried green tomatoes.
I'm a new subscriber, originally grew up in eastern Kentucky. We moved to Atlanta for better jobs, but after all these years, my heart is still in the Kentucky mountains. I love your You Tube name. I agree with you no red for this recipe; the greener the better. I mix buttermilk in with the eggs. I made some for my late sister and she told me I cut them too thick. it never crossed my mind that people who wear dentures need them to be cut thinner.
Mercy. I love fried green tomatoes. My dad cooked them fresh from the garden. But had corn meal mixture . When we had fish fries. Yummy. I may go to farmers market Saturday and see if I can buy some green tomatoes. Love ya'll. And your videos!!
Had fried green tomatoes at The Loveless Cafe just outside of Nashville about 4 years ago. So good! I’ll have to try these. Just got some fresh green tomatoes yesterday.
You are correct, many restaurants have no idea how to prepare fried green tomatoes. I am from the South. This was a staple. Yours are beautiful. So much technology you would think we could taste these for you. 😅😅😅
@comesitatmytable9044 Excellent! You should start practising the lingo 😉 Australia is awesome and no, we don't don't have scary animals at every turn. It's a safe country. You'll be welcomed 🇦🇺💚
I always have done my green 🍏 like this, but now I learned to try just butter milk n flour and of course seasoning. Have a wonderful day and God bless. Theresa Carpenter WY 😊
My goodness did this bring back memories of my Mommy and I in the kitchen cooking. She cooked them exactly the same way as you did. She was a good cook. She learned from her Mother and I know she must have helped Grandma cook because there were 9 children. That’s a lot of mouths to feed.
I was and am born in Michigan. And I've been eating fried green tomatoes my entire life. But, my mother in law who was born and raised in Eastern Kentucky, moved to Michigan after getting married, would make her tomatoes with cornmeal. Oh, and was good. I couldn't ask for a better mother in law. She is truly missed.
I love fried green tomatoes. I am watching now. Yours look so good. They are originally from the south. I don’t like cornmeal either. I like them plain no sauce. I live in Louisiana and here in the south we have green tomatoes like a lot in the grocery stores even in the winter time. Or I need to make some lol. Thank you for sharing all your delicious recipes. We really appreciate it and love watching yall.
I just made some yesterday my egg wash is eggs with milk , I use the flour but for every cup of flour I put in two tablespoons of cornstarch helps make them crispier, and then I have another dry mixture of cornmeal yellow or white with Italian bread crumbs. So the way I do it is, flour ,egg wash then the cornmeal with the bread crumbs mixed in then I fry them.
My mother use to fix these when I was younger especially on Saturday mornings with 🥓 eggs and toast. When I got married I introduced to my husband and he loved as well. And I'm from the North.
Actually Fried Green Tomatoes originated in England back in the early 1700's. My Grandfather was from England, fought against Germany in his 20's and used to make this. I always thought that was strange even when he offered to me. He told me that his Grandfather used to eat them as food was scarce. That is as far back as I can see but who knows. Either way I don't care where it originated from I just know that they are one of my favorite meals. Thank you for your videos.
We have eaten fried green tomatoes all our lives and love them so much. We cook them just like you do and like them by themselves with no sauce. You just can't beat them with a summer meal. We, too, have made a meal out of fried yellow squash and fried green tomatoes on several occasions. Yum!
My family visited Savannah Georga and ate in a restaurant there. The menu had a BLT which had fried green tomatoes on it. I had it but my family said yuck!! Well, it was delicious, and I now eat some that way every summer. My Kentucky Grandmother made them with half cornmeal, half self rising flour and dipped in buttermilk first then the flour mixture, no eggs. Everyone does them different and all are delicious!
Hello. Recently discovered your channel. You have some nice looking dishes!! I love fried green tomatoes, but couldn't get green tomatoes after the end of summer. I have discovered tomatillos are carried in my local grocery chain year round and they are very, very tart. I think you will love them since you don't care for green tomatoes that have a little pink inside. I love them fried like we do green tomatoes. Please try them; I think you will enjoy!!
Its ok i like mine half red and half green! Lol. Just a little on the sweet side! Yum yum. If you put them in the egg then flour then egg then flour again it makes the coating double thick. Takes a little longer to cook but the tomatoes come out so crisp and good! It's southern! Yum!
I just wet mine with water and dredge in flour so it's not so heavy with flour. No salt and I add some butter to the oil. Then drain them on a cookie rack. Yours look great. I live in Mn, I get funny looks when I talk about fried green tomatoes 😀
I love fried green tomatoes! I also preserve them by canning them and they are a delicious meal in January lol. Sprinkle on some Parmesan cheese! Delicious!
After looking at your video - I went out and purchase some green tomatoes and I cooked them exactly like you did and they were excellent! Thank you for the recipe! By the way, I ordered that special ingredient for my meatloaf. I found it on Amazon and I am making meatloaf for my Sunday dinner. I will let you know how it came out. Keep cooking!!!!!!!
Love fried green tomatoes, although I haven't made them in a while. Watching your video and reading the comments reminded me of a recipe I haven't made in years. Green tomato cake. My comments written on the page of my recipe reminded me of how delicious it is. Too bad I've had a hard time this year trying to find green tomatoes!
I've never heard of a green tomato cake but it sounds great. The season has almost passed for getting a good green tomato, that's for sure! It's a shame we can't get good tomatoes (of any kind) all year long. But then again, maybe that's why we enjoy and appreciate them so much when we can.
I'm from Indiana, my mother from Tennessee, these are an Indiana tradition too. Best tomatoes grow in Indiana. I'm in Michigan now, 😢these poor folks don't know what's good. I'm going to fry me some tonight ❤
From WV. I always put mine in water to get the flour to stick. I'm going to try eggs. We just had fried green tomatoes last night. My mom was here visiting and we took dinner to a neighbor.
I think I must have been over frying and too hot a fire@; your grease looks a better Brown, and your tomatoes look lovely. I also never salted my tomatoes that much. These look fantastic! I ❤ fried green tomatoes! I have never used the egg, then flour...just been doing it all wrong! Always just used the blue package of Louisiana Fish fry.
We make fried green tomatoes all year long. Its also good mixing flour and corn meal .We can them up then fry them For canned all you do is to wash tomatoes cut into about 1/4 inch slices stick into wide mouth jars. Add salt and water and leave 1 inch head space. Seal and Hot water bath for 5 min. Thats it. I know alot of people says not safe. My great great grandmother done this until she passed and my mother got the reciepe been doing that for over 100 years . Its safe
If you will look for a more white appearing green tomato, they are the best. And I use self rising cornmeal. Try it. Delicious! 8:42. Try eating them with a remoulade sauce.
I LOVE FRIED GREEN TOMATOES 🍅😋😋😋😋😋😋😋 you’re making me so hungry 🤤 just watching this now.
Takes back home. Mom's been gone for years now and this video took back in her kitchen with wonderful memories. I still haven't mastered her technique, but their still yummy! Thank you!

You should season the tomatoes &/or the coating, but not the oil. You will kill somebody w/all that salt😵

Your comments have made me chuckle. Enjoy your fried green tomatoes tonight! Thank you so much for watching our video.
From WV. I always put mine in water to get the flour to stick. I'm going to try eggs. We just had fried green tomatoes last night. My mom was here visiting and we took dinner to a neighbor.
Oh, sounds delish with Bacon. Yum
Fried Green Tomatoes!! Staple at my house!!😋😋 Great video!!💚💚💚
Thank you! We love them! We appreciate you watching.
I only use flour in mine also. Looks good. Thanks for sharing
Thank you so much for watching our video.
Вау супер👍😋
Yummy! Trying this!
My Mom mixed flour with cornmeal for dipping and egg/ S&P. So yummy
Thank you!!
You are welcome. Thank you for watching.
Thank You Tom and Melissa ❤❤
Scrumptious! Little Ranch Dressing and you have something out of this world good!
I hadn't thought about Ranch Dressing with them, but yes, that would be scrumptious!
