    " ...Les œuvres du grand Corelli... sont devenues la seule musique savourée pendant longtemps, et il ne semble pas y avoir de satiété, ni de vertu encore exhalée, et la question est de savoir si elle sera jamais dépensée, car sa musique peut être immortelle, les consorts de Corelli le seront. "
    Ainsi écrivait Roger North, vingt-huit ans après la première publication de l'Opus 5 de Corelli à Rome en 1700. L'histoire a confirmé sa prophétie, comme en témoigne le présent enregistrement ; l'opus 5 a fait l'objet d'au moins quarante-deux éditions au XVIIIe siècle seulement, et les œuvres de Corelli sont universellement citées dans les œuvres contemporaines et modernes comme le summum et le modèle le plus parfait de la sonate baroque.
    Arcangelo Corelli est né à Fusignamo en 1653 dans une famille de propriétaires terriens prospères. Il a étudié à Bologne et, à la mi-vingtaine, il était l'un des plus grands violonistes de Rome, tenu en haute estime par ses employeurs, parmi lesquels la reine Christina et les cardinaux Pamphili et Ottoboni.
    Il dirigeait et jouait dans de grands et petits ensembles, exigeant un haut niveau de discipline avec unanimité s'il s'agissait de jouer dans des sections allant jusqu'à vingt violons. Ses compositions témoignent elles aussi d'une nature musicale exigeante et perfectionniste, ne comprenant que six recueils de douze pièces chacun, soigneusement révisés et polis avant leur publication
    Un contemporain rapporte au sujet de son jeu : " Je n'ai jamais rencontré d'homme qui laisse ses passions l'emporter autant quand il joue du violon que le célèbre Arcangelo Corelli, dont les yeux deviennent parfois rouges comme le feu ; son visage se déforme, ses yeux roulent comme dans une agonie, et il se donne tellement à ce qu'il fait qu'il ne ressemble plus au même homme. " La conception que Corelli se fait de la nature expressive de son art est révélée dans ce commentaire cité par North : " Non udite lo parlera ? " (Ne l'entendez-vous pas parler ?)

    Monica Huggett (born 16 May 1953 in London, England) is a British conductor and leading baroque violinist. At the age of 16, Huggett started studying at the Royal Academy of Music, London, with Manoug Parikian and Kato Havas, baroque violin with Sigiswald Kuijken. She co-founded and served as leader of the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra under Ton Koopman from 1980 to 1987. She was made a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in 1994, and serves as professor of baroque violin at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen, Germany … WIKI

    Peut être que ça fait 20 ans que je n'ai pas écouté A.Corelli.... je ne sais pourquoi... tellement de choses à écouter et de découvertes à faire. C'est une injustice car c'est un très grand compositeur (rien ne m'émeut plus que de redécouvrir un compositeur, redécouvrir une musique enfouie que l'on connaît par cœur) quelle richesse. Vive la musique.

    People who don't hear these ornamented versions like this - esp. the Adagios here - have absolutely no idea what they're missing.
    Truly wonderful - like being transported to a higher sphere.

    Me imagino, al Compositor y sus Mu'sicos, ejecutando el Concierto de Navidad.Diciembre,noche de frio,el titilar de las velas,alumbrando atriles y a los invitados que escuchan. La luz de esas velas hace mucho tiempo que se ha apagado,pero la Mu'sica au'n vibra en muchos corazones, en el mio tambie'n!!.-

      @@zibobpompon5768 I should know, I'm a violinist. Strads have been around for 400 years. But changes in bows and strings allowed the sound of Strads to fill up a hall. The sound of anything is subjective. It's interesting to hear what a violin might have sounded liked in the 17th century. But the original sound doesn't necessarily make the music better.

      @@muslit If sound is subjective there is no basis for saying it has "really improved through the centuries". That said, I will say that the modern conception of baroque setup is still mostly stuck in a self-referential loop which ignores historical evidence in order to avoid the inconvenience of experimentation. Sadly meanwhile the modern vocabulary of performance practice has become manneristic and grandiose. It suits the music that was written for it, but it is a set of articles of faith and encourages a certain amount of defensive posturing from players when confronted with anything different.

      @@classicalmusicreference Geminiani's "arrangement" of Corelli's La Folia, as performed by Simon Standage with Trevor Pinnock's English Consort - is by far the best performance of Corelli's La Folia in it's remarkable ultimate culmination into a Concerto Grosso - their recording of it transcends the original! It is the closing work on their remarkable recording "A Grand Concert of Music"
