    Usually I have mixed feelings hearing a fortepiano, but this was perfect. This was chamber music at its best. Schubert and the three of you played as one. Congratulations for the technicians who captured the performance. The sound quality is stunning, and the videography allowed us into the chamber, seeing just what we wanted to see, without distracting. I thank you, and I'm sure Schubert is smiling.

      This must be a late fortepiano, closer to the sound to a piano but still maintaining the softer timbre of the fortepiano.

    This exceptional work serves as compelling evidence of Schubert's premature demise. Considering the composition's brilliance at the age of 30, one can only fathom the extraordinary musical achievements he might have accomplished had he been granted a longer lifespan. @jimp4170 Рік тому +22

      Using a fortepiano solves a lot of problems for the modern Schubert pianist. Schubert's textures are often quite thick and can get very soupy on a Steinway. It's a lot of work to clarify the music. It's even more difficult in chamber music where you also have to work hard not to overpower your colleagues. With a fortepiano, much of that work is unnecessary.

    • @staffanolofsson8201

      I'm disappointed to learn they used gut strings. it feels in this day and age we should be passed such things. the performance is wonderful, nonetheless

    • @knd1940
      @knd1940 Рік тому +11

      @@richardhunter132 The gut strings go with the fortepiano. If they had used modern strings (steel or synthetic core) the sound would have been too powerful for the fortepiano. So gut strings tend to go along with fortepianos while modern strings are used with the more powerful pianofortes. In fact, even modern strings can have trouble holding their own against a modern Steinway. There's room for both approaches. For Schubert I too prefer modern instruments but I can understand why some people prefer to hear the music as it would have sounded to Schubert. Incidentally, some responders below don't think the strings are gut. If so, then a period fortepiano can indeed hold its own against modern strings. I don't think the same is true with period harpsichords. There are great performances that pair modern string instruments with harpsichords, like Arthur Grumiaux's recordings of the Bach violin-keyboard sonatas with Christiane Jaccottet's harpsichord, but Grumiaux's violin seems to me to overpower the harpsichord.

    What a fantastic ensemble. There's a lot of textural restraint to the playing that allows the melodies to sound cheerful but not saccharine. I don't know if this is an interpretive mainstay of this piece, but notice Sol Gabetta's steely, non-vibrato color at 7:48 which made that section seem appropriately eerie and mysterious.

    Très très belle interprétation qui illustre mon approche du son peu / pas vibré : cela oblige à être très varié et précis à l'archet. Croches sèches, légères variations sur les 4 notes répétées, Notes longues avec changements de poids, de vitesse. Bref, un phrasé et une dynamique renouvelée. Accompagnés ici par un merveilleux pianiste.

    The piano looks as if it could have dated from Schubert's time. Beautiful instrument!

    How pleasant to hear this trio with a fortepiano which does not cover the strings with its volume. Thank you. Schubert died 1828, the first cast iron frame was 1840, Steinway 1855 and 1866 Carl Römisch with the full cast-iron plate whereas nothing since the 17. century has happened to increase the volume of string instruments.

      Gabetta plays on a 1759 Guadagnini cello, Isabelle Faust on a 1704 Stradivari - just to emphasise the point

    I am surprised, the piano timbre carries and sustains the music's dramatic style much better than I thought it would. I have become acclimated to the modern piano sound and my prejudices have been weakened by the surprising elegance of the late 18th century sound here.
