head downstream to Whirlpool State Park for amazing view of the rapids and stone stairs down into the gorge. Lots of nature, fewer people, and up close experience of the rapids. In that area there are also very nice rim trails and picnic areas, and it is all free and served by the free trolly during the warmer months. A "must see" if you have the time.
