The beautiful purple trees are jacaranda and they bloom for a very short time... seems like about a month. I love them! (and miss them, cuz now I live in Florida... very few jacaranda I've seen here.)

I lived in Southern California for many years and fell in love with the Jacaranda trees. Especially the way the blooms come before the leaves. But, they’re a zone 10 tree and I now live in zone 7. 😟

Jacaranda trees are native to SE United states and Florida. They grow in the wild. There only seems like there are more in California, because they use them as a landscape tree, where Florida uses more the Crepe Myrtle.

Couldn't help but notice the thumb thing when you flagged down the bus... is that a Scottish thing? Usually that's the way we signal to drivers you're hitching a ride for free. Not done much anymore in the US... back in the early 70's I hitch hiked from Texas to California all for free thanks to the kindness of strangers.

The purple flowers were on jacaranda trees.
If you ever have the chance, you should try Jarritos. It's a Mexican soft drink with some interesting flavors, like tamarind, guava, passion fruit, watermelon, grapefruit, mango, and a few more. My favorite is the tamarind.
The pork taco may have been a taco al pastor, which (loosely translated) means "farm style." It's marinated and cooked on a rotating spit, sort of like doner kebab or gyros. Sometimes it's cooked with pineapple.
I share your opinion of Hollywood. When I visited there years ago, I expected it to be glamorous on the surface but a bit sleazy underneath. It's not. It's sleazy on the surface.
I hope your back feels better soon. All that driving may have caused the problem.

Nothing wrong with taking a tour or hop-on, hop-off bus to get an overview of the place you are visiting. My aunt does that in Europe. She takes a tourist bus ride first, and then decides afterward where she wants to concentrate her time. You can cover a lot of ground up front and get a better understanding of the city and its history, so you don't waste your time on areas that are not of particular interest to you.

Glad you enjoyed your day. As someone from the area, the area around Hollywood Blvd has always been a dump and sadly that's where most tourists get their impression of LA. This city is huge and there are some amazing places to see and eat but it can be a little tough for first timers or if you don't have a local showing you around.
Also like others said, the trees with the purple flowers are Jacaranda trees and they grow well all over Southern California. They look beautiful when they are blooming but those flowers are a pain to get off of your car or sidewalk when they fall. The trees can also have shallower roots so they aren't the best to plant near a house.

My body can't handle a lot of any kind of sweeteners or sugars, but the rest just make me feel kind of yucky overall. Meanwhile aspartame makes me extremely sick and messes my guts up in a major way. Jacaranda trees are some of my favorite. We had one in our backyard when I was a kid and I used to lay on all the flowers that came off the tree. I loved them so I’m glad you love them too. Southern California has the best Mexican food and friends who move out of state that’s what they want when they are home for a visit and In N Out burgers. BTW you’re eating what is called street tacos, which is a beef, onions and cilantro and maybe radishes. Not my favorite. I like chicken with lettuce and cheese. My nieces call them white people tacos, but that’s the way they were made back in the day.
Next time when you come to LA visit The Grove for shopping and you might see a celebrity. Lots of celebrities who have big money live out of the city. Live in cities like Malibu, Santa Barbara, Encino, Studio City. I’d also recommend going to Universal Studios and take the tram ride of take a tour to see where some of your favorite shows were filmed. Or one of the other studios like Warner Brother or Paramount Studio who all have tours. It is funny how people around the world and even those that live in the MidWest still think Hollywood is like in the old movies. Sadly, it hasn’t been like that since the 1950’s. When the 1960’s and 1970’s and sex, drugs and rock n roll hit, it changed LA and not for the better. Also next time visit our beaches, museums (we are known for aerospace and the museums are amazing) the Getty in Malibu or the Getty off the freeway are amazing or Griffith park Observatory. The El Capitan premier’s the latest Disney movies, which is super fun and across the street from Groman Chinese theater. Both are iconic. End joy the rest of your trip.

The thing is though if a poverty person ventured into Beverly Hills the cops would be all over them endless they work there my daughter worked at a restaurant in Beverly hills and the people there are not nice and think they are above and better, and you don't see the homeless living on the streets in Beverly hills. The real estate tycoons love the poor people in Los Angeles they pay that high rent so the real estate owners can drive their Mercedes while the poor live check to check with no money at the end of the month. The poor are slave's to the rich and most don't know it and won't till they move to another state.

If you ever get to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, there's alot to do, to see, and to eat. Alot of frozen custard but try Kopp's. Singha Thai: Chicken Crispy Basket, Barbiere's: Meatball Snack. Swim in Lake Michigan, it's cold! And you can safely drink the water, it's ice cold too! Check out the Harley Davidson Museum in 'the valley' between the North and South side.

I feel for you about the sciatic pain. I use to suffer with that frequently. I've found that the secret is good stretching, especially after long drives. Look up some stretching exercises for sciatic pain.
We did a hop on/hop off bus tour in Berlin because we only had one day there and it was cold and rainy on that one day. It's unsatisfactory when you are use to exploring freely at your own pace but it beats nothing.
Here us the good thing about taking real sugar out of soda, you don't want them anymore. When they switched to corn syrup in the US I totally quit soda cold turkey because they tasted like a$$. I was probably 16 years old and I've maybe had one or two sodas a year since. I'm 49. Thanks greedy soda industry!

The periwinkle colored trees are called Jacaranda and they come from South America.
They bloom in May and June, so I know when it was that you visited.
The tree puts its ALL into it's blossoms and it will dump a load into your yard. The rotting flowers smell like the monkey cage at the zoo, and the sap destroys the paint on your car.

Those trees might be jacaranda trees, we have a bunch in my neighborhood. Probably my favorite street taco is Al Pastor which is marinated pork they cook an a big vertical spit. Hollywood is a bit underwhelming, it's old, crowded and most of the stars live elsewhere. I have seen probably about 5 stars in 58 years, I have probably seen more but everyone out here is just trying to get from pt A to pt B. Last star I saw was Ben Affleck's ex wife Jennifer Garner. I saw her with her trainer walking some dirt road. She was super nice and instantly recognizable "not like the ho he just married".

Al Pastor for the win! My favorite too, but not everyone is good at it. I like lengua as well. For that matter, there's not many tacos I don't like... West Hollywood where it meets Beverly Hills (Robertson blvd etc) is more like the Hollywood people imagine.

I've been to LA a few times and I never understand the hype. It's too spread out and it doesn't have an identity other than the home of the rich and famous.
If it is concentrated, like Hollywood Blvd, Olvera Street or Chinatown, its too much of a cheap tourist attraction. Koreatown, Long Beach, Santa Monica, West Hollywood are so spread out that you'd never know you're in their jurisdiction.

Those are not potato trees; they are jacarandas. The jacaranda trees have been used ornamentally in So. Cal for a l long time. They were fairly common when I grew up in the 70's. I would think now people would avoid them because of the mess they make, but the appeal of the color might override that.
