As someone in capital region NYS... I agree completely! Every state I've spent time in has been like being in a different country, and I love that about it. The U.S. is like 50 countries all sharing a trenchcoat and pretending to be one. I sometimes think that's part of why we have some of the problems we do here. 😆

As someone who has been trying to see as much of our beautiful country as possible, it's crazy how you can experience culture shock just by crossing state lines.
Tell me about it. I grew up in Wisconsin, and then moved to Tennessee and then moved to Louisiana then New York. I have lived in approximately 7 states. But those four were probably the biggest jumps in culture.

I don't know why but this video made me feel really nostalgic. You and Evan are two of my favorite UA-cam creators and I found it really heartwarming to see you both working together. Chicago is my home but I have a lot of problems with the US, so this video gave me both a happy and sad feeling. When I saw Evan was in Chicago, I had hoped that you two would collaborate and I am super thankful that you both did! I hope that there can be more like this in the future!
As someone from your “home state” (Indiana), when I have visited the East coast and West Coast, it has felt like visiting London. I tried so hard when I did visit London to not be so “midwest nice” and it is quite difficult when it’s been ingrained in you since birth

MANHATTAN (the geographically smallest of the 5 boroughs) is grey asphalt. The other 4 (and Brooklyn, Staten Island & Queens in particular) is over the top parks and tree lined streets. As a New Yorker, it's unbelievably galling, when non New Yorkers associate Manhattan for all of New York City. Native New Yorkers avoid (most of) Manhattan at all costs. Annnnnnd I can see why he fits better in Europe.
😅 A good friend used to live in Brooklyn, now the Bronx. I didn't see all of the green in Brooklyn, but I still miss hanging out there when I visited. Where she is in the Bronx, there's more green, but Brooklyn just had a different vibe.
My parents are from southwestern Pennsylvania. I've been there several times in my life through the times when the air was dirty with coal soot, the collapse of the steel industry and its metamorphosis into the "gem". I'm a big time Steelers fan, and to be honest, I'm not sure there's a steel mill within a hundred miles of Pittsburgh anymore. You can still uncover some old abandoned coke ovens in the surrounding towns, I think it's underappreciated because people still look at it as a steel town. It isn't. It has a well renowned transplant hospital. Fun fact: I had an ancestor who was shot by Indians on a boat on the Monongahela River next to the Point. Back in those days, it was Fort Pitt.

Just chiming in to say I once had to last-minute reschedule a vacation from New Orleans, and the only available option was Pittsburgh. Maybe it was just because I expected nothing, but it was an incredibly good time! And a great place for asking the locals opinions on where to go. The cable car up the hills and dinner overlooking the city was awesome. So many cool museums, the random americana art exhibition in some guys backyard, etc. Dope city.
I was born and raised in NJ but my mom is from Illinois. She would always say hello to everyone, as a teen I thought she made us look like idiots. I now live in NYC and the mayor is attempting to help with the garbage problem. However, he wants people with curbside pickup (as opposed to putting it in a dumpster) to buy a 55 gallon garbage can with a locking lid. The garbage can costs $50 and sanitation promptly breaks the lock when they open the lid. Also, 1 garbage can isn't enough for most people and they end up putting bags next to the can defeating the whole purpose.
Good point about Midwestern friendliness. While in Indiana, a buddy of mine from Mass. & I were out at a restaurant. After the waitress took our order, he asked me if everyone here (Indiana) was so friendly like her. Yes they are.
New York trash: we didn’t build in alleyways to hide the trash, so it can ONLY go curbside. There are spots that have alleys, but usually that’s for commercial trash behind shops. Roosevelt Island is unique: the trash goes UNDER the street in a vacuum tube system that’s connected to most of the buildings.
A friend of mine who lives in New York used to be an entertainment writer/editor. She schooled me right away about how you always see alleys in police shows that take place in New York, but there aren't any alleys!
Better than Oreos (which are great), are the original "Hydrox" which I've discovered they're making again. Crispy! More chocolately! Better! Oreos are the dupe of the original Hydrox!
In England I watch Evan regularly, and I always think how interesting he is about his impressions of our differences, and how nice he is as a person. I also enjoy watching Lawrence too. I hope there are more vlogs like this with them both!

I'm from the Midwest, and when I moved to the East Coast, I was warned that people were not going to be as friendly. I haven't had major problems. Maybe because I came with low expectations. I do remember walking to the local fish market and saying, "could I please have a pound of..." and one woman looking at the other behind the counter and said, "She said 'please'!" I started to wonder what foreign planet I had landed on! It's not the same as the Midwest, but once people let you in, you're in.

I lived 27 years in New England, and have lived the last 25 years in Southern California… and I feel a lot of of this can actually translate to the feeling of being a East Coast person, living on the West Coast, going back to the East Coast… There’s just a difference, due to the vastness of this nation. It’s similar going north to south, as it is going east to west, and learning about all the little different regions around the country. And the first thing I have to have, the second I get off the plane in New England, is Dunkin’ Donuts coffee. That is the classic New England need, when visiting home again.

As a PNWsterner, I can assure you there has been no “mass deforestation. We have logged off old growth, but Oregon as well as all other states have many more trees than we did in the past.
The waiter thing is so stupid. With tips they make WAY more than any other waiter anywhere else in the world. And on top of that, IF they don't make enough tips to make the minimum wage of whatever, the restaurant HAS to make up the difference up to minimum wage.
I looked it up a couple years ago. Waiters make regular state minimum wage or more in California, Washington and Oregon. All three states have minimum wages greater than the federal one. So no guilt in doing the historic 15% tip there, IMHO. In other states, the base wage can be lower than the "minimum" wage, so tipping more makes some sense, but you're right about making up the difference. I've never looked it up, but I didn't think fast food workers counted as wait staff so I've always assumed they made at least their state's minimum wage and the tip thing was sponging.
Never tip. Let the servers unionize or lobby for fair wages. It's not my responsibility as the customer to pay staff, that's the employer's responsibility.

Not sure about the UK, but at least here in America, those donations that you give through a retail business’s checkout system is not a donation from the company using your money. It is 100% YOUR donation that YOU can write off on your taxes using the receipt you get from said retail store. That donation can not legally be written off by the retail store and in fact, doesn’t even touch the company’s books to even have the opportunity to be written off. I assume it’s the same in the UK. Also sorry for sounding rant-y, but so many nonprofits rely a lot on retail store checkout donations and I can’t stand to let misinformation like what Evan said go unchecked when it has the potential to hurt the people in need who rely on nonprofit services to subsist in some way.
Living in Rhode Island for twenty-five years now, I discovered that northern New England and southern New England are two completely different animals. Certain moments of this reminded me of a friend from Newburyport, Mass.
@@LindaC616 And each New England state is very different, and different accents are common in each state, however, each state is very much influenced by different immigrants over the years . There are a lot of Italian and Portuguese in Rhode Island as well. Massachusetts is large and the accents vary, even Boston is not one accent only. In Connecticut, some of the older populations have the RP of the non existent Mid-Atlantic, that was taught for Hollywood and broadcasters. Then it became fashionable for the high born to have private tutors and many pricey boarding schools taught it . Which sort of stuck to Connecticut as a snooty privileged accent of the Ivy League schools and young men with sweaters over their shoulders on Daddy's sailboat. We now have large Portuguese, Puerto Rican, Jamaican, Nigerian, Irish and Italian and Polish and many French from Montreal. Maine is all its own. There is nothing like it . French in the north, and a staid but very humourous, directness. It's very original. "Can't get there from here". Very kind and helpful people, . Vermont and New Hampshire, two very different states. Vermonters are quite friendly, but, you may have a different accent in each holler, or valley. It's beautiful! New Hampshire the same, but not identical to Vermont. Beautiful. And everyone, especially the 3 northern most, keep your eyes peeled for moose.
As someone who has lived all over the Country. From home in Massachusetts (New England) to Texas, Michigan, Iowa, Oklahoma, Northern California, New York, among many other states. I can say that people are the same everywhere. You will find the same types of people no matter where you go. I can also say that things are the same no matter where you go. Like infrastructure and entertainment. The only difference between states is how far you need to travel to access the same things.
Speaking of driving.... when my brother, who was in the service, came home to Seattle to visit while he was stationed in Japan, he was turning out of the cul-de-sac we live in and automatically turned into the left lane. I yelled KEVIN!! and he was like, Oh sh*t and zipped to the right, lol.
@@LindaC616 Yes. When Japan came out of isolation in the mid 19th century they brought in experts from Western countries to help rapidly industrialise. One group of experts were British railway engineers and our railways run the same as our roads, so when cars came along Japan did the same as we did and chose left hand driving.

It’s not a scruffy desert, in Afghanistan, just across the border of Pakistan. It’s not in the crowded city of Pyeongtaek, South Korea. It’s not in the southeast of Africa. It’s not north of Frankfort, West Germany. My home is in the mountains of east Tennessee. I retired here and love it, in the US foothills of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

I lived 27 years in New England, and have lived the last 25 years in Southern California… and I feel a lot of of this can actually translate to the feeling of being a East Coast person, living on the West Coast, going back to the East Coast… There’s just a difference, due to the vastness of this nation. It’s similar going north to south, as it is going east to west, and learning about all the little different regions around the country. And the first thing I have to have, the second I get off the plane in New England, is Dunkin’ Donuts coffee. That is the classic New England need, when visiting home again.
We do have the Oreo Coke Zero here, I don’t like either Coke Zero or Oreo so have avoided.
I came across that at seven eleven, about a month ago. I had no idea that such a thing existed.The guy said they had the sugar free version, but common sense told me to stay away from it.

The waiter thing is so stupid. With tips they make WAY more than any other waiter anywhere else in the world. And on top of that, IF they don't make enough tips to make the minimum wage of whatever, the restaurant HAS to make up the difference up to minimum wage.
I looked it up a couple years ago. Waiters make regular state minimum wage or more in California, Washington and Oregon. All three states have minimum wages greater than the federal one. So no guilt in doing the historic 15% tip there, IMHO. In other states, the base wage can be lower than the "minimum" wage, so tipping more makes some sense, but you're right about making up the difference.
I've never looked it up, but I didn't think fast food workers counted as wait staff so I've always assumed they made at least their state's minimum wage and the tip thing was sponging.
Never tip. Let the servers unionize or lobby for fair wages. It's not my responsibility as the customer to pay staff, that's the employer's responsibility.

Not sure about the UK, but at least here in America, those donations that you give through a retail business’s checkout system is not a donation from the company using your money. It is 100% YOUR donation that YOU can write off on your taxes using the receipt you get from said retail store. That donation can not legally be written off by the retail store and in fact, doesn’t even touch the company’s books to even have the opportunity to be written off. I assume it’s the same in the UK.
Also sorry for sounding rant-y, but so many nonprofits rely a lot on retail store checkout donations and I can’t stand to let misinformation like what Evan said go unchecked when it has the potential to hurt the people in need who rely on nonprofit services to subsist in some way.

Living in Rhode Island for twenty-five years now, I discovered that northern New England and southern New England are two completely different animals. Certain moments of this reminded me of a friend from Newburyport, Mass.

And each New England state is very different, and different accents are common in each state, however, each state is very much influenced by different immigrants over the years . There are a lot of Italian and Portuguese in Rhode Island as well.
Massachusetts is large
and the accents vary, even Boston is not one accent only.
In Connecticut, some of the older populations have the RP of the non existent Mid-Atlantic, that was taught for Hollywood and broadcasters. Then it became fashionable for the high born to have private tutors and many pricey boarding schools taught it . Which sort of stuck to Connecticut as a snooty privileged accent of the Ivy League schools and young men with sweaters over their shoulders on Daddy's sailboat. We now have large Portuguese, Puerto Rican, Jamaican, Nigerian, Irish and Italian and Polish and many French from Montreal.
Maine is all its own. There is nothing like it . French in the north, and a staid but very humourous, directness. It's very original. "Can't get there from here". Very kind and helpful people, .
Vermont and New Hampshire, two very different states. Vermonters are quite friendly, but, you may have a different accent in each holler, or valley. It's beautiful!
New Hampshire the same, but not identical to Vermont. Beautiful.

As someone who has lived all over the Country. From home in Massachusetts (New England) to Texas, Michigan, Iowa, Oklahoma, Northern California, New York, among many other states.
I can say that people are the same everywhere. You will find the same types of people no matter where you go.
I can also say that things are the same no matter where you go. Like infrastructure and entertainment. The only difference between states is how far you need to travel to access the same things.

Speaking of driving.... when my brother, who was in the service, came home to Seattle to visit while he was stationed in Japan, he was turning out of the cul-de-sac we live in and automatically turned into the left lane. I yelled KEVIN!! and he was like, Oh sh*t and zipped to the right, lol.

@@LindaC616 Yes. When Japan came out of isolation in the mid 19th century they brought in experts from Western countries to help rapidly industrialise. One group of experts were British railway engineers and our railways run the same as our roads, so when cars came along Japan did the same as we did and chose left hand driving.

I can confirm that Oreo flavored coke is in the UK. I just saw it at Abington Services near the England and Scotland border.
There are foods that are not available everywhere. For example, I grew up a couple of hours from Chicago. We used Brooks Hot Chili Bean in our chili. Now I live in Florida and can't find that brand anywhere.

The Oreo flavored Coke has more of an... orange flavor, I think. But, the closer to room temperature they get, the more like Oreo they start to taste like. The cookie, not the cream.
I have to say Evan, next halloween you need to dress up as a punk rocker. The wind is doing amazing things to your hair, lol.
