Russell Wilson can (still) only run one offense.

- Russell Wilson can still only run one kind of offense and now he’s been cut from the Denver Broncos. Sean Payton tried to make him into a quarterback who could operate his system, but the Broncos paid 39 million dollars NOT to play for them this year, because he only runs one kind of system: his. What is Payton asking him to do that he can’t? And what is the Russell Wilson system that the QB insists on running? This week’s episode uses the coaches all 22 to analyze Denver Broncos (and now Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback) Russell Wilson.

What is your gut feeling on how the Russ-Steelers saga turns out? I think with Arthur Smith (who is a good OC, maybe not the * best * head coach) the receiving talent, a much improved offensive line, and a good defense, they could go 5-12
They are better than last year and had 10 wins lmao. People never learn with the Steelers
Did you mean 12-5?
@@PrestigeSteeler Yeah Classic Steelers season incoming! Slight winning record and a first round playoff exit...
You're trolling, right? 5-12?
It's all dependent on scheme. Gotta move the field laterally and obviously need to communicate YOUR READ PROGRESSION. Hacketts offense didn't make sense, but it seems like from what the reason progression should be. It looked like Russ was backwards from it. I guess someone really needs to understand what it'll take for people to be in a position to succeed

And when he does catch the ball dude steps out of bounds because he doesn't drag his feet.
26 touchdowns to 18 turnovers. Dude was a fumble machine but everyone ignores that for some reason.
That’s a good point, he fumbled all the damn time. People get all up in their feelings with this stuff, look at the analytics. He takes sacks, misses wide open reads down the middle (he’s short) and leaves perfectly suitable pockets and runs in circles until he fumbles the ball or gets sacked. He’s got big hands too, so that’s not an excuse.
He did not lose 10 fumbles. That's why we're ignoring it, and why some of you can't be taken seriously.
Winningest QB in NFL history in his first 10 seasons. FACT: he did not have the best roster in NFL history to work with, nor the best coaching either. So don't tell me how he rode the coattails of his defense or any of that crap. Terry Bradshaw had a better defense than he did. Nobody think he sucked & credits his defense alone for his Super Bowl wins. Peyton Manning was surrounded by great talent. Nobody thinks he was worthless. Russ won more than any guy in the history of the game over his first decade & that means HE was the primary factor in that. Stats can be deceiving, but 105 wins & 53 losses are not lies. If he were white we would be hearing almost none of this bullshit.

Carson Wentz had 27 touchdowns and 7 interceptions his one year in Indy.
Good stats ain’t they?
What the stats don’t show is 10 plus interceptions that the defense dropped.
Russ is the same way. The stats don’t show you how often those fourth quarter comebacks were needed BECAUSE of Russ.
I watched a lot of Denver last year and then being down in the fourth quarter was due to Payton being overly conservative then when they’re down asking Russ to bail them out
You also have to look at the sack rate. Wilson had a horrifying sack rate above 9.5 during his time on the Broncos. Anything above a 7 means you should alter your scheme, O-Line personnel, or find a new QB. The Broncos did the first two in the 2023 off-season with the transition to Sean Payton and signing Mike McGlinchey, and Russ still keeps eating unnecessary sacks. He's the reason why so many drives stall out. Same deal with other high-sack QBs like Wentz, Watson, and Fields. They don't have good pocket awareness.

Never seen a QB destroy his HOF resume faster than Russ the past two years.
That’s what I’m saying, he was a definite hall of famer before that trade
He never was a HOF QB. we in Seattle just never had a media as bad/critical of Russ to expose him. Which he probably wasn't aware of about Denver when he moved. The offense that Wilson runs is having one of the greatest defenses ever, Marshawn lynch, and being able to throw go balls.

Exactly what's in the video hes no hofer thats for damned sure
Yeah I agree when those pieces were gone it was very clear Russ could only carry his teams so far. He was never an Aaron Rodgers, mahomes, Lamar Jackson, or Tom Brady type where a team becomes better with him on it

The Russ Wilson offense.
By far the best graphics I've seen on a football explainer. It's so so helpful to be able to visualize key player movement. Great video, thank you.
As a saints fan I know I’m bias, but man it really seemed like Sean held a lot back because he didn’t think Russ could do it.
idk, calling mirrored deep outs on 3rd and 13 sounds like youve already accepted punting as a coach and youre setting the offense up to fail on that down. Sean deserves some blame at least for the play calling. There's just no way I believe this is the most Russ is capable of after 12 NFL years
Nah bro Russell has been in the NFL for 12 years and had to wear a wristband last season he was struggling so bad. Sean had to really simplify his offense for him becaue the verbage used is very intricate, and Russell wasn't seeing the field.
russ is a better qb than payton a coach, period.
But WHY did he think he couldnt?

He hates yall , only reason he wins
There is always a guy that cooks your team. Seattle guy i remember Brandon Marshall getting us alot.
Like in the video, just looking at the list:
-He’s still a good deep ball thrower.
-His calling card, the ability to scramble and extend plays, is noticeably diminished.
-He still doesn’t throw the ball to the middle of the field.
-He’s been near the top of the league every year in sacks despite the quality of his offensive lines, which data shows us just neuters offensive possessions.
Given that the negatives far outweigh the positives, I don’t really think Russ is a QB you want starting for you if you have aspirations of winning a Super Bowl anymore.
He's still mobile and one of the most accurate QBs in the league.
@@andref9663 He's overrated and he's trash. He'll be forced into retirement at the end of this season.

NFL coaches need to understand Wilson can run a spread offense with read option or run a heavy run offense with play action like the Wisconsin offense Paul Chryst ran.
Problem is he cannot, not in this stage of his career when he is a less dynamic runner.
Would be awesome idea if he wasn’t as slow as rocks. Daniel Jones is faster than him 🤣
@@AVanManyou’re saying that like Daniel Jones isn’t one of the best running qbs in the league
@@choiyatlam2552 He has not been a dynamic runner in years. He's still mobile, he's just not in a system that fits him.
I've never bought the "Russ doesn't throw over the middle because he's too short to see" thing. Drew Brees is not even an inch taller and he worked the middle very well. Russ is usually very careful with the ball and only likes throwing to open receivers as opposed to throwing people open. He's only comfortable throwing people open along the sideline boundary. He's always been that way.
Cuz he doesnt trust timing routes. IN THE MIDDLE... Cuz he cant see
@@HellfireHellestoor because of that pick in the SB
Russ ducks down when he starts to feel pressure, which further limits his vision. Brees didn't do that.
You just said he only likes throwing to open people when there are many clips in this vid that show him ignoring wide open guys in the middle to throw a go route or to try and escape out the pocket even though he had time to throw
that example is bad, because your saying because a hall of fame player was able to overcome being short, being short isn't an impediment. no offense but that logic is asinine. The fact that Kyler Murray is a similar height, yet also struggles to throw over the field, and has a similar heat map, makes even further more what you said idiotic because all you had to do was compare the shortest qbs playing right now and the common sense relationship would have hit you in the head
Yeah but if a coach's scheme doesn't work with the QB, shouldn't the coach work with said QB then? Payton doesn't get enough blame IMO
Peyton continually tried to put Russ in positions that match his strengths, the video even talks about it. Russ doesn’t process the game fast enough but thought a “better teacher” would make him be able to. This video perfectly highlights both Russ’s weaknesses and what Sean was doing to help him succeed. Russ let go of everything he needed to succeed when he left Seattle: WR Chemistry, a great run game, and an OL that understands his tendencies. Even Seattle has confirmed this, their OC said it was nice to have Geno because the could “open up the playbook.” They used to send RBs or WRs into the huddle with the play calls. The video even talks about how his receivers used to read defenses for him. Russ is a great athlete and I wish him the best, but I’m glad he’s out of Denver. P.S. he’s gone to an organization that is a lot more put together than Denver currently, so miss me with the “Watch Russ have a better season than the Broncos this year” BS. I also wouldn’t be surprised if they play Fields half way through the season because without Russ’s old legs defenses will tear him up.
Just wait and see. Steelers offense will look just like the broncos did. 3 quarters of nothing, then 1 quarter of highlight reels against a prevent defense. Sprinkle in 50+ sacks.
@@TubaManBoy Payton did not. Payton wanted Russ to run HIS system. Every complaint you can make about Russ, were complaints about Russ in Seattle. Payton never matched Russell's strengths by doing what Pete Carroll did. Payton hated Russ for not being a timing and rhythm QB. You can't complain about Russell's weaknesses when those weaknesses existed before the trade. Russ did much better in Seattle because Pete knew what he was doing. What Lockett did by reading defenses is no different from what great QB and WR duos do. Sean Payton couldn't even give Russ an average run game, it was bad. Russ thrived in Seattle even with an average run game.
@@johnnyblazers Just wait. Steelers offense will look better than the Broncos offense. Then you'll be tripping over yourselves with excuses as to why Payton didn't adjust correctly to Russ. Sean Payton would call his terrible run game for 3 quarters then ask Russ to save the day.
@@andref9663 yes, the difference between Seattle and Denver was that Russ had declining athleticism and now NEEDED all of those things to succeed. Peyton did the best he could to put Russ in a position to succeed, beefed up the line, slimmed down the playbook, and tried to focus on the run. The problem is Russ couldn’t move the way he used to when he first came to Seattle so without his young athleticism combined with less chemistry between him, his line, and his receivers; the defense could take advantage of his inability to throw middle of the field. They loaded the box, took out the run game, and forced Russ to beat em with more than moon balls. He used to be able to handle that with scramble drills but he no longer has the same burst so his scrambles more often led to sacks. Just compare his year with Hackett to his year with Sean and there’s no way to say that Sean didn’t AT LEAST try to cater to his strengths.
The graphics on your videos have improved so much recently, keep up the good work.

@@theacgkid 🤝
And avoiding sacks is one thing Pickett was at least not terrible at. The Steelers had a slightly below-average O-Line in terms of pass protection while the Broncos O-Line was Top 10 with an argument for Top 5. Pickett's sack rate was 6.6 (kinda high, but not too concerning), Russ Wilson had a worrisome sack rate of 9.1, and Fields had an abysmal sack rate of 10.6. I hope the Steelers know what they're getting into with signing Wilson and Fields.

The Steelers still made the playoffs with three different quarterbacks under center at various times throughout the season. Denver could have had a winning season even though they would still missed the playoffs, but they benched the better quarterback for the last two games MAINLY due to his contract.
If Russell Wilson agreed to amended his contract back in October, he would still be a Broncos QB today, they still could have made all the same draft and free agent moves they did anyway…

This was hella informative here
i still love that when Wilson joined the Broncos, everyone thought that they were a QB away from superbowl contention, i mean EVERYTHING in the nfl gets overblown and overrated
They were tho.. he just wasnt that Qb...
The main thing was that people banked on Jerry Jeudy and even Courtland Sutton developing into a good WR duo, sadly other the course of 2022 and 2023 they showed they were a couple of JAGs, obviously Russ was the main problem in Denver but that era was doomed no matter which QB they had gotten.
They were, if you watch their game, they had a Defense to do it, had a running game, and young talents. Only issue, they were in QB hell since Manning. Russ was just very very bad.
they were?
@@Chronoicno they were not. people who thought that did not take into account how bad the offensive line was, and how mid the receivers were.
This is the issue with many 'dual threat' QB's, they rely on their mobility so often that when they're late in their careers, their game morphs into a version of this. Peyton had a short QB in Drew Brees but Brees had made all the adjustments early in his career to compensate for his 'short' comings, we see this in Doug Flutie's career, also but Wilson never had to bother with learning that and now he's bottle necked his skill set. The same thing will happen to Lamar Jackson and some would say it's already begun. If you don't see the value in it early, you narrow your skill set until it becomes a series of bad habits you can't be taught out of.
Lamar did try to change last year and was largely successful in doing so. In fact, he was too adamant on it and forgot the fact that he can run, thus losing to the Chiefs.
Lamar has gotten better at passing every year of his career. Unlike Russ he does not look to throw go balls on every play and can pass over the middle of the field. To compare Lamar to this version of Russel Wilson is laughable.
Jackson is slightly taller than Wilson and does prioritize the middle of the field significantly more. In fact, the big question about Jackson as a passer was if he could hit deep shots outside the numbers, the exact passes Wilson excels at. They're very different QBs in terms of the areas where they like to throw.

Laughable? I recommend you use a SEARCH engine and compare Wilson's stats last year to Jackson's last year and tell us who the joker is, I'm pretty sure you'll find that clown in the mirror.

But there is a Unspoken Fear of calling out coaches among fans & analysts which is confounding when you realize videos like these are popular.
Roman's offense was Way Worse than Matt Canada's. He doomed most passing plays from the start & tipped all opposing defenses which side he was running the ball to. That Lamar has such a great winning % when 60% of his career was spent having to work under these limits is astounding. Still, his difficulties are only the Second Worst such story of any recent QB.

I don’t think Wilson height is why he doesn’t throw to the middle of the field, I think the much bigger reason is he never learned how to do it. Kyler Murray is the same height 5”10 1/2 and yet he consistently throws across the middle, that’s where he and TE Trey McBride thrived n made their magic last season. Looking at advanced passing statistics Murray threw it over the middle 2nd most of all NFL QBs last year.

He's lost a step so he isn't able to use his freewheeling playstyle any longer. He couldn't do it in Seattle at the end.
Interesting, you state that Russ cannot see over the heads of his linemen; yet your highlights prominently show Russ standing in the middle of the pocket throwing the "go" routes. Could it be that Sean Paytons offence didn't put the receivers into a position ( in the middle ) synced up with Russel ?
Your argument falls a little flat, the offense has to have the receivers capable and willing to drive into the middle, a scheme that opens holes for them, AND a QB that delivers.
How long did it take for Payton to develop that system with Drew Brees ?

Russ got to play against Brandon Staley twice
I’ve been complaining about Russ’ Time-to-Throw (TT) number for a long time. Last year he was 3.06, standard operating procedure for him. “Perfect” is considered supposedly 2.5; it’s not coincidence that Brady was right there. Now I think it depends upon QB type and I’ll let it go that Mahomes is high because it’s for a reason. I think Russ should aim for 2.7 - it’s only a “gut” feeling though. But I argued that Wilson was a bad fit for the Broncos I think three years ago, when he was traded. He had a faster track in Seattle and he had Tyler Lockett who really bailed out Russ on those off-schedule derp sideline routes. I didn’t think it would really work in Denver. Evidently Payton think Wilson was a bad fit too for some of the reasons you bring up here.

I just don’t understand how rus was to short but brees wasn’t
I genuinely think you could've just put up film from the offensive possession after literally any of the Broncos turnovers. Defense was in overdrive for five weeks and Russ would just keep giving the ball right back
I think Russ will have a good season in Pittsburgh. He can only run one system and Seattle built that system perfectly. Doesn't seem as if Sean Payton was ever willing to do that.
Im not calling somebody with 0 mvp votes mr unlimited
Russell can throw in the middle of the field and go look at Seattle tape. It's really confusing why he refuses to do so
But Brees was only 2" taller? Make it make sense?
I am not a Russ fan. I also believe Payton is terribly overrated at this point. Everything you said is solid and accurate, but i think he will be much improved in Pittsburgh at least for the firsthalf of the season. The better the run game is, the longer and better Russ will be
How’d did Wilson get away with this for so long?
He’s the only player I’ve seen who played himself OUT of the Hall of Fame.
Let Russ cook just means he can’t run a normal offense and has to improvise out of the pocket
Not really his fault the coach tried to fit a square peg in a round hole. He's had sustained success until he got to Denver.
I agree, Russell Wilson is not Drew Brees.
@@furiogiunta7886you’re right, Drew Brees is a much better quarterback
@@dos_gringos9853 Yeah, Brees is an all-time great and Wilson is a good-great QB with borderline HOF potential.
Facts. The difference between a good coach and a great one is their ability to build around their players strengths
@@Ryan-wx1bicope harder
If Russ retired three years ago, he probably makes the Hall. How can he make the Hall now??
Fear not the man who's practiced 1000 punches...fear the man that practices 1 punch 1000 times....or something like it...anyways as a Raiders fan in a big fan of his work 🤣🤣🤣
Shows you how much I really know about football lol I thought Russ was borderline elite
I'm not making excuses for russ. He's a deeply flawed QB in a lot of ways. For whatever reason he's been unable to fix those flaws while his athleticism and playmaking seem to have diminished.
All of that being said, if you are Sean Payton, you were brought in to work with this qb that a huge haul was given up for and a huge contract was handed out to. Seattle had 3 offensive coordinators all find success with russ as their qb, several of which didn't have the benefit of the run game. If you can't tailor your offense to the players you have, that makes you a bad coach.
The broncos and their fans swear up and down russ was the savior. All you had to do was run cover 2 and the deep threat was gone
It wouldn't surprise me if the Steelers have a decent offensive year, but it also wouldn't surprise me if Wilson doesn't finish the season at QB.
Look at all the foe GM’s, scouts, and head coaches in the comments. If you asked Andy Reid or any head coach, coordinator or GM in the NFL they would tell you about the brilliance of Sean Payton, while ya’ll work as accountants or truck drivers, get real.
So does it mean that Peyton can only coach one offense, the dinosaur drew breeze offense?!
Mr unlimited looking pretty limited here
Drew Brees 6' Russell Wilson 5'11" Kyle Murray 5' 10 inches
Can't throw in the middle- too short.. hmm? How did he do in Seattle?
He didnt throw in the middle in Seattle either... and Kyler Murray sucks too. Brees is an outlier not the average
@@HellfireHellesto He won a Superbowl not throwing in the middle. Isn't that the ultimate goal?
@@HellfireHellesto Last time I checked. Russell Wilson has the 2nd highest passer rating in NFL history not Drew Brees
@@HellfireHellesto and Kyler Murray doesn't suck. ..when he had a WR in Hopkins he did well. Getting injured then does not mean he sucks. Dude ranked better that QB getting paid alot more that actually sucks
@@MadSUPANOVA "He won a Superbowl" no tf he didn't. The defense outscored the Broncos in that Super Bowl 16-8. But he did LOSE a Super Bowl by throwing the worst interception of all time.
Well, Wilson to Pickens will surely shine, statistically. Steelers likely won't be good though.
I think we can agree Russ was mediocre last year, but the Broncos should have been in the playoffs.
Something that gets overlooked is they were 1-4 to start, despite being top 5 points per possession through the first 5 weeks. They should have beat the Raiders, Commanders and Jets if the defense even played below average.
You see 16 points against the Raiders and 21 against the Jets and think “Russ was trash.” But Russ only had 5 possessions against the Raiders and only had 6 full possessions against the Jets. So he scored more points than expected based on the number of drives he was given.
The main reason why the Broncos missed the playoffs was because Sean Payton’s defense couldn’t get off the field over the first 7 weeks. They were giving up 15 play 10 minute drives to start the year. The second reason why they missed the playoffs was because Russ was not a good QB. He was below average.
"Russ is too short"...Bo Nix is all of 3 inches taller, so good luck with that.
