SUP CJ Hey man I appreciate you I am 2 years into the hobby I am still very much learning I could say that you contributed to me staying in the hobby I crashed my 40 gallon but Gave it a second chance and utilizing your videos I was successful that being said.. I would like to request some more videos from you always good seen your tank and your progress thanks
CJ! My Man! love this channel. i've literally watched the entire playlist for this 120 today! looking to get into the hobby shortly, and you have given me some food for thought. keep up the good work. happy to be on this journey watching this tank grow.
I finally got my skimmer to stop randomly overflow like that. I just made the bubbles stop at the bottom of the collection cup instead of halfway up and it's putting out some really nasty skimate. And your right...EPIC SHOUT-OUT MAN👍👍 I still can't believe you won. I'm glad I did it live or nobody would have ever believed me lol
Billy Pipes watching a Cj video then randomly Bam you get Billy Pipes. Works way better that way 😎. Appreciate it again man that reaction was worth playing again and again
Hey man, just wanted to say keep up the good work. Watched almost all of them in the span of a couple of nights and I gotta admit I'm hooked. You've opened my eyes to a lot of things I never thought about or took into consideration so thank you! Appreciate it once again! Its your tank do it how you want it coach!
Gratz on the BP win! Recording the journey is the best way to do it CJ. Good or bad you come up with an answer sooner or later. Not many of us small or big channels put out these types of vids. This is what makes you stand out there. 10k subs extra from the 7k you left the JBJ! Keep doing what you do and Be Easy. Stay Reefing and high 5! Mel
I love seeing the steps along the way, the discoveries, realizations and actions taken. I always learn a lot from you! And now, I’m off to vacuum the center front section of my sandbed! The pistol shrimp and green wrasse take care of the left side and the clownfish with their weird behaviour are flicking the sand everywhere on the right side, so it’s just the center front that isn’t getting turned over. Gonna fix that right now.....👍🏻👍🏻
Reefgrrl its a journey... I need a disclaimer for people watching. If your going to imitate my methods. Make sure u give it a 8-10 month delay to see the outcome of my “master plans” they don’t always work out lol
Damn CJ!! I love your system!! I also run a 120 gallon system with an algae scrubber, except my scrubber is magnetic snd it goes on the side of the sump! Love the apex and im thinking of getting one to keep better track . I also feed with selcon or with vita chem. Thanks for the info! Love the w/c and overflowing the sump to vaccum the sand bed! Thank you! 😎👍
Amazing tank CJ! great video as always. I dose carbon but I get cyano from having too little of phosphate. Always dosing the same carbon source causes mono culture bacteria. Which causes inbalance. But when mastered it saves a lot of waterchanges.
Have you thought about using a denitrator? Korallin supposedly makes a good one. They are more old school but a natural way to contorl nitrates. Very low maintenace once set up and can be reduced or taken off line easily by just adjusting flow...
Personally I have never had much luck with both algae scrubbers and refugiums on tanks this size. My phosphate and nitrate levels were all over the place and not very consistent, just like the graphs you are showing. What I have found is that NOPOX has been very helpful in keeping the bacteria population healthy on my marine pure and x-port blocks. For me the combination of a good protein skimmer and NOPOX have always kept my nutrient levels low and allow for a titration of dose. As far as bacteria I have used them all. Dr. Tim’s was the best until I tried the Microbactor 7 on my new tank. Running with a phosphate of 0 and nitrate of 5, and I am a really heavy feeder just like you.
Chris' Piece of the Reef thanks for sharing your experience. I’ll interesting in your thoughts on why you think the scrubber and refugium failed? Undersized? Tank overstocked? Nopox without a doubt is extremely effective.. seems like u used it as a last resort. The question is why? 🤔 serious question btw...
Actually our tanks have kinda mirrored one another...you the JBJ and me a 40 breeder with 20 gal long sump, then I jumped to a 125 Marineland with a Trigger Systems Sump while you moved into to the SCA 120. I had to take down the 125 and am now in a Red Sea Reefer 525XL. Our livestock has also been about the same. Like my 125, my Red Sea 525XL is heavily stocked and well fed. I started way back when dosing NOPOX daily in my 40 and 125 and thought it was a pain. I then decided to like you go more natural. For me the Fuge which grew Cheato well but became nothing more than a particulate trap. I grew a huge number of big pods in it, but it was truly a crap collector. At the time I was doing the Triton method so no socks. I could not keep my phosphate or nitrate level at reasonable levels for beans. I lost a lot of SPS once the Cheato took off, I think part of the issue was that macro algae also strips out trace elements as well. The algae reactor / scrubber was sized to a 250+ gallon tank and was brought back to me from Europe by a friend. Again it grew algae well but it did not seem to discriminate what kinda algae it grew. Several times I lost the algae colony, the meltdown that you speak about. At that time I was running AquaForest products which has you dosing bacteria daily and a concentrated carbon source. When I set this tank up I kinda decided to keep it "stupid simple" and run it that way I ran my other tanks initially which worked so well. I dose Red Sea Ca/Mg/KH with a doser daily, actually KH 23 times a day. I dose 5 cc of NOPOX when I feed the fish their 3rd meal of the day. Bubble scrub overnight. Right now I am running an old PhosBan reactor because my last ICP test showed a high level of Aluminum. Going to start doing 5 gallon water changes twice a month when the the new tank is full 2 months old. I am going to do this mainly as I vacuum the shallow sand bed. Lastly I did use a biopellet reactor for a while initially on my 125....never cursed so much in my life with the constant goo it produced.
Chris' Piece of the Reef very interesting indeed... I’ve found the scrubber to be too efficient for the majority of my tanks life until that meltdown. I’ve later found out going weeks between harvest also may have led to that prob. I enjoyed the huge harvest I got but was playing with Fire. It has already sucked my phoshates back down to .02 where they stayed consistently over the last 9 months. To your point it will never be as consistent as your nopox dosing. Every harvest has a regrow period that causes a small spike. My corals will be conditioned to that but it’s something worth noting. I also don’t run mechanical filtration. In Ether case you have found what works for you.. can’t be mad at that. I subbed and will be tagging along. Keep doing what you do! 😎🤙🏾
Your tank is looking good CJ. Thank you for sharing your journey with all of us. Are you still using Miracle Mud and do you feel it has benefits to your system?
CJ! What up man. I have been enjoying the journey. I have a few questions if you don't mind. I just moved homes and instead of resetting up my 75gallon i think i might want to take the journey to the 120. Are you still happy with the tank you got? How much was it? I am all about getting the most for the least amount of moneys. Was the stand the most expensive part? I think after i get a tank and stand the only parts i will need to upgrade would be return pump, sump (i want a refugium in this one), and i might sale the skimmer and go with a reef octopus. I have two Radion x30 pros already and 2 mp40s.. so flow should be fine. Do you have any tips for me? This will be a ULM Triton system.
looking good man. I agree on the bandaids like vinegar/vodka and trying to ween myself off the nitrate sauces. Im assuming it means i need to add another natural export method - all part of the journey....
Hey CJ! I've been following your 120 gallon build. Great job and thanks for the good info. I also checked out your 45g jbj build. I wanted to get into the hobby but after watching your builds I'm scared to get into it because you mentioned how this hobby can be frustrating because of expense due to loss of fishes because of ich etc. Also I was interested in a tank with a sump but after watching your AIO vs sump comparison I'm hesitant. Any advise?
Dude, in the wild corals and rock can stand hours out of water. Low tide is a thing and it leaves a lot of corals and inverts exposed to the open air for at least a few hours
Cru zilla I use Neptune lunar module for my moon lights. Give my radions a break during the night. Too expensive to run 24/7 I’d rather burn the cheaper leds for that 😎🤙🏾
Nice Bro I Have Really Enjoyed Watching All Your videos over the past couple of months and new I think I wanna try my hand art a tank. Quick Question. Have You Considered adding a foxface rabbit fish if so why or why not add one. And Lastly I Am Considering Getting A T247 Light Like Yours. Do You Think One Will Be Enough To Light A Normal Size 55 gallon tank
Hondasonatta never liked the look of those fish so I won’t add them. They are great from algae grazing if you need it tho. U would need 2 ocean revives for a 55 gal. One light covers a 2 x 2 ft section
Hey Because I'm thinking of getting 1' I'm looking to buy the 160 do you think it's better to go with the 160 if I'm gonna have a heavy body load a fish or should I just stick to the 120
Can anyone tell me the name of that “ tentacle cabbage” looking creation at the end of the video... as you can see I have no clue about any of these things but would love to get started on this new hobby👍🏾
CJ QUICK QUESTION..... Wheres the clean up crew????? I know that with all the wrasses that's almost impossible but.... a clean up crew can help control the build up on the sand and rocks. Some sand sifter star fish can help being that ur wrasses tent to kill off everything else.
TeeGee EyeEff they are there... hermits. Trochus snails, conch snails and the shrimp. Wouldn’t matter if I had a million of them they would still create waste that needed to be broken down and removed thru export. At this point Algae is not a issue in the display. A sand sifting star could help turn sandbed if it stays alive in my system. Tried 2 diff sand sifting gobys they both ether died or got killed. Still leaves me with the root cause.. import and export 😎🤙🏾
Radarbell just running coral lab ab+ program. But to film I change them... I’ll be releasing a downloadable profile for filming very soon. WXM module 😎🤙🏾
CJ'S AQUARIUMS thanks man I’m looking forward to it👍 I’m running the ab program too but it’s just way too blue to take any pictures or do a video, I I need a good viewing spectrum
Hey CJ love following you and your tank. I learn so much from your video's. Can you please tell me what sand are you using in your tank?? Love your tank, colors are stunning.
CJ'S AQUARIUMS I seem to be stuck at around mid 6 alk level and am only running a phos reactor I’m using coral pro salt, which salt do you run? I’m thinking of switching to reef crystals for higher alk count. Thanks for the reply’s
CJ'S AQUARIUMS have you ever thought about adding some shrimp. I keep 2 cleaners, a coral banded, and several peppermints in the same size tank. They definitely clean the left over food up well. Plus they are fun to watch. The wrasses might eat them though.
texastitan1989 I have 3 fire shrimp, reef lobster and sally lightfoot crab. Just lost both my cleaner shrimp recently. They serve a purpose but as u mentioned always danger of being eaten
CJ'S AQUARIUMS That sucks. Cleaner shrimp are cool. I will keep on watching. Your tank is looking good. I am looking forward to see some acro growth. That seems to be the one thing my tank struggles with.
Hey I had a quick question, how do you like that seneye for par readings? I was thinking about ordering one today but I was curious on your thoughts about it?
I think your tank is overstocked and is unable to keep up with processing all those nutrients. You’ll have to consider new methods to step up your export game or regular WC. That must’ve been awesome winning a third radion!
TheErtsj keep in mind before my scrubber melting this tank was nutrient depleted with same stock list. I have to reduce my export and increasing feeding to catch up. I still have room for more if I wanted to add..my filtration is very efficient
dudesreef no. Return pump stays running. I don’t run mechanical filtration on my system. Food can travel from sump to display as much as it wants. Whatever doesn’t get Skimmer out that is
edgardo alimagno keep in mind no matter how good that sock is your still not going to catch everything. It’s better to just remove the water all together if possible. It’s like running toilet water thru a filter and saying it’s clean. Would you still drink it? 😮
gee your powder blue looks good have you had it long , im thinking about one but not sure if my other fish will fuk him up lol if you have a min sus out my tank id appreciate ya thoughts on this cheers mate from OZ
Ur lucky to win that xr15, u definitely will be able to grow those sps with three, two was a stretch, 19 even though they look great , Create allot of poop, that’s why ur nitrates are so high, can’t get them low without a bigger refuge or another algae scrubber, will be hard to grow sps, carbon dosing is the way to go, grow bacteria? What’s wrong with that.?
T Surro supplemental carbon dosing is one thing but over stocking and under filtering your tank relying on carbon dosing is another. My nitrates were undetectable before the scrubber melted. Filtration is not an issue. I’m getting it back in check now though...
I don’t think of natural carbon dosing like vodka, vinegar, or NoPox as a bandaid. The bacteria in your system is a living creature just like fish or coral. Feeding your bacteria population with carbon isn’t any different than feeding your coral with a can of coral food. Just my opinion.
Michael Hicks interesting point... so I’ll ask you this. If you start your tank depending on that carbon source for survival would you consider that tank properly balanced? Do you supplement your tank with a constant carbon source? Would it crash if u stopped?
I think of it as an optional method to help a tank thrive vs being crucial to a tank not crashing. It should not be necessary to feed coral either if you have enough natural food being generated by the ecosystem, but it is nice to feed corals to help them reach their full potential.
I have dosed both vodka and NoPox for periods when I wanted to build up my natural bacteria population, but I always ween myself off of this type of dosing when I feel everything is stable. I primarily use Vibrant now which helps keep my tanks stable and clean with a healthy bacteria population.
Michael Hicks thanks for your feed back. I’ve heard of reefers approaching bacteria the way you mentioned. Somewhere along the line people started relying on it so heavy they forget how to balance thier tank without it, my comments were speaking more towards that mentality. I agree with you on bacteria needing food source and how important they are. Would be a great conversation next reef shack if you can join me live one day. Keep doing what you and upload a video of your tank one day 😎🤙🏾
Try Hpd for Americareef. Best food I’ve used cheap only 25 for 4-6 months of food and u can customize it super easy my tangs love this and are growing like crazy check it out on UA-cam
You way over feed. To much food goes uneaten. Get a clear tube, shot glass. Siphon up , put finger on top, release as eaten. You will see fish inverts know that tube and come flying out of reef to eat everytime. It’s rewarding and very cool! Try it ! You are overloading right now to the max. You will have issues eventually

Thanks for the info, that skimmer + algae scrubber combo = 💪💪💪! Congrats on the Radion win!
Inappropriate Reefer yessir! I’ll have some sort of this same combination for every tank I have moving forward

Billy pipes is the man!
CJ love the tank!
Way to get things in check!
Them 3 lights lookin' proper..
that blue clam is awsome
Thanks for the info CJ. Love the videos!
Your tank is looking good CJ. Thank you for sharing your journey with all of us. Are you still using Miracle Mud and do you feel it has benefits to your system?

Try some sand sifting gobies they keep the sand stirred up really well. They really help to minimize detritus build up
Budget Aquatics tried two of them... one jump and the other was killed by my starry blenny
looking good man.
Great update ..U get that camera scheme together yet on ur wxm for the radions.. whatever ur using now the video looks great
PRFishGirl still working on it. I feel it can look alittle more crisp... thanks for watching 😎🤙🏾
Did you ever dose the tank as in calc, alk, and mag? Corals looked really good and seemed to be thriving.
i was running a calcium reactor it handled all that for me
Congrats on the light also that’s why I just stick to the simple
How you like the new lights, I have the ai hydra 26hd thinking adding more or changing to radion. I have regular 90g
Dude, in the wild corals and rock can stand hours out of water. Low tide is a thing and it leaves a lot of corals and inverts exposed to the open air for at least a few hours
Love me my nopox! Its as natural as the skimmer in the ocean.
Nado Nopox loves you too ... keep doing what you do nado 😎🤙🏾
Hi C.J tank looking great hope you get the
I’m here watching now
Sweet setup boss..! But on your radions do u do any of the lunar setting on them..?
Cru zilla I use Neptune lunar module for my moon lights. Give my radions a break during the night. Too expensive to run 24/7 I’d rather burn the cheaper leds for that 😎🤙🏾
Great video 👍👍
Great Video and good information! What is the fish at the 8:35 mark?
Nice Bro I Have Really Enjoyed Watching All Your videos over the past couple of months and new I think I wanna try my hand art a tank. Quick Question. Have You Considered adding a foxface rabbit fish if so why or why not add one. And Lastly I Am Considering Getting A T247 Light Like Yours. Hondasonatta never liked the look of those fish so I won’t add them. They are great from algae grazing if you need it tho. U would need 2 ocean revives for a 55 gal. One light covers a 2 x 2 ft section
Cool At What height would you put it at or does that come in the box
Love the video update bro looks good.👊👊👍
You need a Diamond goby to keep stirring the sand for you all day long. They don't drop sand on the corals.
Alfredo Reis Deus tried two of them... one jump and the other was killed by my starry blenny
CJ'S AQUARIUMS Sorry to hear that. If you ever get one again, make sure it is eating other stuff beyond sifting the sand or it will probably starve.
Hey CJ, what's the red LPS coral in the sand (right side of the tank). That's purty :)
Maxspect gyre question for you. You, running the SCA 180g, right? What is your max setting on your gyre?
strat1960s no I have the 120g and the max varies up to 100%
Hey Because I'm thinking of getting 1' I'm looking to buy the 160 do you think it's better to go with the 160 if I'm gonna have a heavy body load a fish or should I just stick to the 120
Awesome tank!!!! 🔥🔥🔥 Can you talk about your clam in one of ur videos? 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Can anyone tell me the name of that “ tentacle cabbage” looking creation at the end of the video... as you can see I have no clue about any of these things but would love to get started on this new hobby👍🏾
CJ - you got the best voice brother! I need you to lay down some tracks for me,l when i have my lady over! LOL!!

Loving your videos cj you got a beautiful tank😍, do you mind sharing your radion light settings?
Radarbell just running coral lab ab+ program. But to film I change them... I’ll be releasing a downloadable profile for filming very soon. WXM module 😎🤙🏾
CJ'S AQUARIUMS thanks man I’m looking forward to it👍 I’m running the ab program too but it’s just way too blue to take any pictures or do a video, I I need a good viewing spectrum
What lighting are you using lately???
Nice. Your not running the water from the basement room anymore?
Dee From Brooklyn no need with the smaller brute can.. I fill it half way and I can do everything on the same level of the house 😎🤙🏾
Hey CJ love following you and your tank. I learn so much from your video's.
Can you please tell me what sand are you using in your tank?? Love your tank, colors are stunning.
My Darling Doodle's Tropic eden Tonga flakes. 2mm size sand
How long have you had that clam
What type of heater would you recommend to heat up the entire tank up to 70- 85 degrees? Please.
What wavemaker were you using?
Do you dose kalk?
What’s your alk running at?
Tank looks great!
SC Nason I use calcium reactor. No Kalk. Alk is 10.3
CJ'S AQUARIUMS thanks cj that’s awesome
Tank looks really nice buddy !!!
CJ'S AQUARIUMS I seem to be stuck at around mid 6 alk level and am only running a phos reactor
I’m using coral pro salt, which salt do you run?
I’m thinking of switching to reef crystals for higher alk count. Thanks for the reply’s
Beautiful!
Whats the blue fish with the yellow strip?
I am sure you have answered this in a previous video. What is your active clean up crew in the tank?
texastitan1989 not much... conch snails, torches snails... few hermits. I don’t have any algae so CUC isn’t a concern to replenish
What is the red fish that you have?
Hey I had a quick question, how do you like that seneye for par readings? I was thinking about ordering one today but I was curious on your thoughts about it?
C Avery works great go for it
I think your tank is overstocked and is unable to keep up with processing all those nutrients.
CJ'S AQUARIUMS happy the WC helped
Do you shut off your return pump when feeding to stop it getting trapped in filter section?
dudesreef no. Return pump stays running. I don’t run mechanical filtration on my system. Food can travel from sump to display as much as it wants. Whatever doesn’t get Skimmer out that is
Nice, i haven't run socks for 10 months or any floss =)
Direct the endline of your vacuum to your filter sock. = unlimited sandbed vacuum time.
edgardo alimagno keep in mind no matter how good that sock is your still not going to catch everything. It’s better to just remove the water all together if possible. It’s like running toilet water thru a filter and saying it’s clean. Would you still drink it? 😮
But you taught me that on ep.9 now im confused. 🤣
18 fish ,,,,,,,,,,isn’t that a lot for this size tank?
Diane M yes... I wouldn’t recommend anyone else to do this. I have been very selective with fish that don’t grow very big besides the tangs
Wait what was that red thing swimming at the end of the video?
Harrison it’s a feather starfish 😮🤙🏾
gee your powder blue looks good have you had it long , im thinking about one but not sure if my other fish will fuk him up lol if you have a min sus out my tank id appreciate ya thoughts on this cheers mate from OZ
Hey I Just Noticed Where Is Your Yellow wrasse did I miss something
Hondasonatta jumped out awhile back
CJ'S AQUARIUMS wow man that sucks I thought you had a screen how do they keep getting out. Does A Screen Actually not really work
Hondasonatta haven’t had my top on in months they work long as there is no gaosb
Hey what is that fish at 8:35?
PartyTime450 blue and gold damsel
You're beyond a master reefer. Ever thought of making it as a career?
Keep doing what you and upload a video of your tank one day 😎🤙🏾
Get a diamond goby, CJ
Kayvon Torandaz tried two of them... one jump and the other was killed by my starry blenny
Why i dont do vodka dosing in my reef tank? Everytime i try to dose some vodka in my tank. I dose it to my mouth. Thats why.
Bubble scrubing is not a químical filtration
Beautiful setup you have! I like your tank! Check out mine any feedback
try benepets...sir
Ken Rosecrans never heard of that food. I’ll check it out 🤙🏾
Try Hpd for Americareef.
