@@SelectiveApathy82 It’s very easy to fall into nihilism. Once you fall down there you often lose the will to climb out. Took me a few years to get out. We are of nature like rust says, nature continues regardless of our existence. We merely fight nature but eventually it will take us, it’s inevitable. Most religions speak of the end of the world for a reason. We all know this won’t last forever. We deny it but it’s true. I say, why live your short existence in misery and contempt? Why not make the most of yourself and possibly even leave something of yourself behind, no matter how flawed it may be. Whether a god or an afterlife exists is irrelevant imo.

I've never been to Louisiana, and I've heard it's nothing but class, but holy shit. The way the director filmed this series made it look like a swampy, haunted maze full of terror & doubt. It's as if the landscape is one of the main characters.

I was born in Alabama and have many relatives in Louisiana. Louisiana is probably the most unique state that I've ever been to as far as culture is concerned, and this show nails the physical aspects of the state to a fucking T. The crime, crumbling infrastructure, factories/powerplants/refineries, the accents of the people, and the brutal terrain and the weather. One of the writers had to have lived there without a doubt.

Louisiana is a beautiful state and some amazing unique cities that you won’t find anywhere in America like Baton Rouge, Alexandria and New Orleans. So unique and they have such a vibe to them. This show is shot in southern Louisiana, specifically on the sub region of the Mississippi delta south of New Orleans. The place is absolutely hauntingly beautiful especially during rain storms. Places like this cannot be seen, they are felt.

It's people who say they don't have the "constitution for suicide" who actually aren't pessimistic at all. They're usually optimists masking their optimism with pessimism as a defense mechanism for coping with reality when things end up not working out how they wish they did. They're usually holding out for hope that they will somehow reach an epiphany in their life that changes their outlook, which Cohle had that epiphany.
The reality is that they're scared of suicide because they want to be proven wrong. This is why I believe there is no such thing as a nihilist, because all true nihilists kill themselves. Those who don't are only kidding themselves, since they clearly value something in life to hold on to theirs, directly contradicting their world-view that "nothing matters".

@@bud389 Like Rust said I consider myself a realist but people will assume I'm a pessimist. I'm not scared of suicide nor I want a life changing experience, more like I'm curious to see what's going to happen to the world. Also just because nothing matters doesn't mean I can't do things I like. I was thrown in this world against my will anyway so why not enjoy it doing the things I like instead of just crying about how painful it is? That's kind of a misconception about people with this kind of view. Rust is a fictional character exaggerated to the utmost pessimism. I'm sure there's people like him but he's clearly unhealthy + the death of his daughter and all the drug abuse messed with him.
In the words of Thomas Ligotti: "Some critics of the pessimist often think they have his back to the wall when they blithely jeer, “If that is how this fellow feels, he should either kill himself or be decried as a hypocrite"
"Simply because someone has reached the conclusion that the amount of suffering in this world is enough that anyone would be better off never having been born does not mean that by force of logic or sincerity he must kill himself. It only means he has concluded that the amount of suffering in this world is enough that anyone would be better off never having been born. Others may disagree on this point as it pleases them, but they must accept that if they believe themselves to have a stronger case than the pessimist, then they are mistaken"
That's the same as if an optimistic person kills himself and a realist/pessimist goes "how did such a happy person take his own life? Wasn't he always talking about how good life is? He's such a hypocrite!". We wouldn't do that because that's stupid. Factors other than the person's view of existence like depression can lead to suicide. And who am I to judge people's motives for doing anything with their own lives?

His being a pessimist doesn't mean that he should stop trying when he is placed in some specific context in which he is obliged to take action or help when the circumsantaces call for him. This doesn't mean that he has hope for human race. He just does what he has to when he has to without any hope or illusion of fulfillment. And his past is a big part of his life. A part that has made him realize the truth of futility. Your past is not separate from you life. he lives through his whole life which is an illusion just like everybody else's as he says.

In screenwriting classes and courses, every instructor says to NEVER WRITE A SCENE like this one. Where it's just two characters talking. Yet it's done time and time again on True Detective and everybody LOVES IT. It's like the screenwriting pros/ teachers want no one to break barriers or rules, but when it's done on a large scale, the applaud it. Fucking annoying. I love the show btw, this isn't a rant against True Detective but towards the screenwriting teachers/ pros.

Average people are unlikely to pull a scene like this off. The teachers correctly assume most who come to them to be 'average' (flexible term, but I'm sure you understand), so tell them not to do it, but in the rare - but possible - case that someone who is above-average comes along, they know that if the student is of any worth then they'll only follow what the mentor says to a degree. If this student believes they can pull a scene like this off then chances are they will. Therefore, they simply make sure the sheep follow the flock, knowing the others will find their own way. I'm not at all a teacher, nor do I have any qualifications regarding screenwriting, but I'd hope my input has some weight to it despite this.

I've felt Rust became disillusioned with life when his daughter died, or at least disillusioned with the idea of a good or purpose filled life. It seems to me he couldn't reconcile the two. The only way to rationalize his existence from that point forward without accepting that someone he loved was taken from him; is that life has no meaning. (Rust: We force ourselves to create meaning because we have to believe we are important, we have to believe our love means something.) Throughout the show he continues to share his philosophy with others reaffirming to himself that he doesn't have to bare the burden of understanding why his daughter was taken from him. Something I've found about Rust character is he is honest with himself even when he's trying to run from what he is scared of. Rust throughout the show is actually the moral leader, I would argue far more so than Marty. Marty is just like the rest of us, so sure of the comfortablness of his existence and he doesn't dig into his own character because he isn't wrestling with his own existence the same way Rust is. Rust can never let himself fully go. Because i believe his connection to his daughter was so strong. I believe this is why he doesn't kill himself and he still dedicates himself to stopping people who are committing injustice. I believe it's the same reason he is a very deep thinker and has come up with so many explanations of why life is meaningless, because it's the only thing that can remove him from his daughters death. It stood out to me how when Marty for the first time asks Rust what he believes in, ( asks if he's a Christian because of cross on his wall.) Rust says he's not a Christian but it is a form of meditation. He then explains that he contemplates the garden and the idea of allowing your own crucifixion. This really stood out to me, especially as an opening characterization of oneself's beliefs. Because the meditation he is referring to is allowing yourself to be sacrificed in the place of another, completely willingly, not forced. It is the greatest concept of love within the Christian religion. It is the choice Jesus made to willingly be captured and crucified. One of the most meaningful things you could meditate on as far as history would think. Considering the popularity and importance of Christianity throughout history. So his own self charactization from the very beginning implies that he meditates on meaning and still considers it at least. I think this really all comes full circle in the end when his belief in life is reconciled when he experiences his daughters love and he realizes that that love does mean something and there is something to hope in.
My favorite tv show of all time and something I always come back thinking about.

I think in the complete same direction and love to see that someone else doesn't just accept Rusts character but asks where he comes from. Nobody is born like that. I think you are exactly right when you say he is like he is because his brains wants to protect him from the pain of losing his daughter. This is how all of our brains work we just have other tactics to cope with trauma. What Rusts need to be somewhat normal is a psychologist. But I think he saw beauty in live again in the end of the season

Believing procreation is unethical is not necessarily pessimistic, it’s just brutally honest, and most people can’t handle the truth of it. True compassion
means caring enough about others’ suffering to at least not perpetuate it, regardless of how unpopular or unconventional it may be. Once you bring someone into existence, you ensure their suffering (where otherwise there would have been no suffering). Not procreating is the only way to guarantee the prevention of suffering.

I feel so bad for Marty in this scene. This is the 1st case he's worked on with Rust and what is he greeted to? A woman who was tortured to death and then ritualistically tied to a tree as the life was slowly drained from her eyes. You can tell Marty was not mentally prepared for seeing something like that so he was thinking "The soul crushing silence of this car ride back to the house is killing me inside I need an ice breaker for me to not think about it."
Imagine how disappointed Marty must have felt when he realized just how mentally apathetic but somehow comfortable Rust was not even phased with what he was ordered to draw for his evidence book. Its like he's thinking "Why couldnt I just be a normal cop? A guy who beats up bad guys who rob banks and then makes it home for dinner. This is the last thing I wanna be doing right now."

For me this scene also shows how hard it is for people with mental issues, depression, addictions, manic states and so on to talk openly to people who didnt encounter that type of sickness yet. It often ends up in a convesations where both left a bit confused, misunderstood and frightened. When you are healthy person, after such a conversation what you do is just you go on with your life and dont think about it much. But when you are sick minded even such blink of a moment can throw your into a critical condition.

I love how the moment Rust decides that he's going to dump it all on Marty is when he started attacking his personality directly. that headturn to Marty is Rust thinking "ok yeah I wasn't gonna go there cuz I knew you wouldn't appreciate the conversation, but you wanna go? let's go then." then he proceeded to annoy Marty to the point of ending the convo so he'd hopefully never have to deal with those kind of questions from him again. the "let me tell you something, you're not great outside of parties either" was what sent him over the edge.

I don't know, I keep coming back to this bit - a fave from this series. Woody knows these pissy-faced types well - as evidenced by his stellar performance in this season, but McC's nihilistic lines here really hit home. Classic.

0:34 I love this bit where he says “That is the most f*cked up thing I ever caught.... can I ask you something? You’re a Christian yeah?” I only just realised Martin was probably going to say “How do you reconcile suffering of those children with a loving Christian god?” with the hope that an intellectual reflective Christian like Rust might be able to give him a thoughtful but comforting answer to the problem of evil. Instead, it immediately shifts and instead of Martin turning to a wise Christian for comfort in despair he gets confirmation of his despair from a realist!

He has a point, we don't like to admit it though, like Martin. We like to live with a comfort blanked wrapped around us whenever an uncomfortable thought comes along, to shield us from the existential storm in our minds. I actually used to be exactly like rust, his thoughts are eerily similar to how I was thinking. I thought for a long time during my period of depression that life was a huge mistake, and our brains became too smart for our own good, and allowed us to destroy the ecosystem in greed, spreading around the planet like a virus, a virus which infects the deepest parts of our planet. And like Cole, I thought it would be better off if we all just died off as a race so the planet could go back to it's natural state, and we'd kill ourselves off anyway in war regardless, given we're bloodthirsty apes hell bent on destruction. Ironically, we're so selfish we can't even stop the destruction of our planet, when that will be our own undoing. Basically thoughts like this every day. I would speak to my family like this, and they would pretty much react in a similar way to Martin, telling me not to speak so negatively, and things aren't that bad. But I knew that was all bullshit, including the religion my parents brought me up with, telling me everything would turn out fine, it's all a lie to make as feel special and meaningful, a comfort blanket to hide from the cold reality.
I remember telling my sister that the our sun will have evaporated all the oceans in a billion years, the Earth will be incinerated, and then engulfed by the sun in 7 billion years when it goes red giant; and us, the evolutionary dead end of the human race will already be gone by then anyway given the current path we're on. All the stars will eventually burn out and the universe will be nothing but black holes, dead stars and empty space. She shook her head in disbelief, saying there's got to be more to it than that (she's a Christian). Denying the truth right in front of her eyes. I said there doesn't have to be, and there isn't, that's all there is and you won't even know it because you'll be dead.
I contemplated suicide many times, but never went through with it. I've grown less pessimistic and depressed now, and more positive, which is a good thing. But I still view life and the universe as meaningless as ever, but at least I have a subjective illusion of a purpose, and there are some things in life which make it worth living, albeit for the short time we have. Our existence, however troubled, is something to be cherished. To be able to ponder the world, having enough intelligence to decipher it, and having the power to effect things in the world, is worth something in itself.

Man i came to the same conclussion over n over again since like. Couple of years but non stopping doing things and living life. You know. Working out. Hanging out. Studuying working. Everything is so meaningless and we will all die someday. I even often come to think of suicide beacuse of that. Whats it all mean. Nothing. But. Why the hurry lets just put some effort to achieve some things have the life standard you want meet some girls have some sex trying love someone. Fuck everything. Once i had this conversation with my mom. Told her if she would accept my goodbye. She said if your love to your family doesnt maintain you here. You need psychologic help. In a very inofensive tone. But thats it. not afraid of die. Anytime will do it i dont mind. Theres no reason for living but its kinda a gift. It must have more pleasures or some moments. Call it positive shit. Pesimist shit. Its just reality and the way you choose to face it.

Revisiting this scene for the thousandth time, I must say it's hilarious how Marty literally drags Rust's opinions out of him, and then immediately after Rust starts to explain his perspective, Marty tells him he "wouldn't go around spoutin' that shit, I was you"; yeah, because clearly Rust openly divulges this deep part of his thought process to just about everyone.

He's not a pessimist, he's more of a nihilist, at least in what he says: life has no meaning is the upshot. However, his actions show he believes in good and evil, which I think makes him not a total nihilist.

It's funny because usually the people who ask others to "chill the fuck out" want to keep their eyes closed. Any philosophy which lacks optimism is killed at the gates before it can enter paradise.
