Baldwin IV contracted leprosy in childhood; it began with numbness in his extremities. He was diagnosed with the disease at age nine. As King of Jerusalem, he took an active role in crusading, even when his illness had reached an advanced state. Because the poor man eventually became unable to blink his eyelids, his corneas dried out, and he became blind. He hung in as long as possible; he died in 1185 at age 24. He left no children, because of his disability. His young nephew, Baldwin V, succeeded him (Baldwin IV had had his doubts about the boy's regent, Guy of Lusignan, Baldwin's brother-in-law). Everything became moot when Saladin defeated Guy at the Horns of Hattin in 1187, two years after Baldwin's death.
Baldwins greatest strength was his understanding with Saladin. It’s one of the most rare moments in history where two men are practically mirror counterparts of the other; they showed both sides be it Christian or Muslim respect and dignity. If Baldwin hadn’t contracted Leprosy history could very well have been very different.

You'd think with how King Baldwin IV dresses that he'd be the Super Villain but in actuality, he was a man suffering from a disease and was considered a great and respectful King that even Saladdin saw as a good man.
The God is different for both side. For Muslim, Allah is the God and I don't think the Christian mention the same God. So there are 2 Gods mentioned in this film but there is only 1 God is true, The One that has no child and is not child of anyone
Baldwin the 4th was 23 when he lead this Army. When he abdicated the throne because of his sickness the Nobles and Clergy agreed that he was too important and too competent to leave the crown behind. He was famous for strategic mind, had he lived past 23 I fully believe he would have stopped Saladins conquest of Jerusalem and Arce
It might have stopped Salladin, but Jerusalem would likely have been conquered eventually. He might have delayed the year off conquest, but it still likely would have been taken by the Muslims. Why? Because of the fundamental problems with holding Jerusalem. The Crusader territories were isolated outposts far from the Catholic world that they depended on for supplies and soldiers. These crusader outposts were surrounded by a sea of Islam. Sooner or later the Muslim world would reunite and the Europeans would have home grown problems to distract them. The only long term solution? The Crusaders would need to conquer all the former Roman territories (North Africa, Syria) as well as potentially Arabia itself. They would then have to somehow convert the Muslims to Christianity or genocide the entire population. This is an impossible task. The Romans couldn't do it. The Mongols couldn't do it. And the Crusaders would be in a worse logistical position to even attempt such a mad strategy. Therefore the original core problem would remain. And Jerusalem would be liberated by the Muslims.
@@daddy_1453 hi, well-thought conjecture. I think they should have cooperated better with the Komnenids to secure Anatolia and Edessa. It's far better than the version I saw in the cinema. Sadly the whole film was very one sided in which faction of the Christians were the " bad ones". The history is extremely interesting and is about dynastic rivalry and the immanent succession to the throne of Jerusalem and the the rivalry between the knightly orders.
Everyone is ready to die and take up arms and then everyone starts screaming and yet Baldwin gently remains calm and directs his troops a true leader Baldwin was even at such a young age
I love the lesson in warfare/politics here: the king doesn't want a war with the muslims, but he knows he has to go and meet them with his whole army nevertheless; he knows his cordial relation with Salahadeen would not suffice to prevent the war if he doesn't have the numbers backing him up in the battlefield

I've been to Israel. The Jordan River is only about 10-12 miles to the east from the outskirts of Jerusalem. If Saladin and his 200,000 men have already crossed the Jordan and Baldwin just now found out about it, they are screwed. Fun fact about Israel -- the entire nation is about the size of New Jersey. You can drive from Eilat (southern point of Israel on the Red Sea) all the way to the city of Dan, north of Galilee in about 5 hours.
One doesn't force march 12 miles across a hot desert towards a city notoriously inconvenient to besiege against a force that might have been a strong equal. Securing logistics, hitting important locations, and not making a b-line for a stronghold is how smarter invaders have handled complicated terrains.

You'd think with how King Baldwin IV dresses that he'd be the Super Villain but in actuality, he was a man suffering from a disease and was considered a great and respectful King that even Saladdin saw as a good man.

Baldwin the 4th was 23 when he lead this Army. When he abdicated the throne because of his sickness the Nobles and Clergy agreed that he was too important and too competent to leave the crown behind. He was famous for strategic mind, had he lived past 23 I fully believe he would have stopped Saladins conquest of Jerusalem and Arce
but people mostly muslims say that salahdin was a great conqueror too
It might have stopped Salladin, but Jerusalem would likely have been conquered eventually.
Then, they would have at least stood a better chance against the might of Damascus and Egypt, at least in the short term.
Would probably still lose long-term due to schism tho..
@@DeoHosa Wrong sort of Christians I'm afraid. The Orthodox world was viewed as heresy in the same way as Judaism and Islam at the time. They would never have cooperated beyond not fighting each other
@@daddy_1453Well put, and I'm glad someone here said it. Like a snowball, inside a refrigerator, plugged into a car battery in hell. The crusades could only ever last so long. And look at Jerusalem today, it has not ended even to this day.

Edward Norton really did a spectacular job as King Baldwin IV, fair play to him.
One of the best performances ever from Edward Norton behind the mask.
I love how you can see in the background the extras even fighting and yelling in each other’s faces which I love makes it much more authentic.
god the detail in this scene is amazing. So many varied costumes, each clearly representing a small part of a vibrant time in medieval history. Whoever did the costume and prop work on this deserves more credit
Epic film. Absolitely epic.
The directors cut is a treasure
It's far better than the version I saw in the cinema.
Sadly the whole film was very one sided in which faction of the Christians were the " bad ones".
The history is extremely interesting and is about dynastic rivalry and the immanent succession to the throne of Jerusalem and the the rivalry between the knightly orders.
KOH Directors cut is genuinely Scott’s best movie

Everyone is ready to die and take up arms and then everyone starts screaming and yet Baldwin gently remains calm and directs his troops a true leader Baldwin was even at such a young age
I love the lesson in warfare/politics here: the king doesn't want a war with the muslims, but he knows he has to go and meet them with his whole army nevertheless; he knows his cordial relation with Salahadeen would not suffice to prevent the war if he doesn't have the numbers backing him up in the battlefield
" Salahadin has Crossed the Jordan with 200.000 men. " That's funny, because Kerak is on his side of the river despite being part of Kingdom of Jerusalem. Did he want to troll them?

Jerusalem is in Palestine.
This man understands that adversity and existence are one and the same.
*"Assemble the army!"*

I like the way they say “Salahadin” instead of “Saladin.”
Boy, I struggle recruiting 50k men in 1066 in the middle of feudal Europe and Salad Huddin just crosses the Jordan River with 200k. seems about right.
King baldwin iv have a good reputation when fighting saladin. He won many great victory even though his force were greatly outnumbered. That's why saladin didn't attempted to attack him, instead he just wait him to die because his heir was a child and he got leprosy.
@SSJ 200'000 is an immensly exagerated number. And although Arabic speaking population was indeed more numerous, they didn't take part in the fight during the Crusades. They recruited Turkic horsemen under the command of various Seljuk princes who were often busy fighting between themselves. Salah'ed-din Ayyubi and his short-lived dinasty were indeed the exception to the rule but still nowhere near as numerous and either Mamluk, Turkic, Circassian, Kurdish or Turkmen warriors but almost never local Arab men.
in india you would have recruited 10 million people army even in 1066 , same for china
@Proud Indian same here in the States. Ppl dont realize Texas is bigger than all of Europe and is almost as large as the whole western Africa. We just dont have as many ppl. You can put all the population of the USA in Texas and still have room. Lol
@Proud Indian I know that. I am talkimg about medieval warfare in the Levant here. Go and find me an instance of a battle with more than 100'000 troops on that context if you can. Both the Crusaders and the Turks were relying on very small number of men. Mass levies were not common there by that time
