reason is not good. Its US price speculation at its finest. Those are really not that different from a Beatle. Im not denying that because its so different from modern cars its fun to drive just not for that price.
I own a 1966 VW Beetle. Needless to say that I'm an air-cooled enthusiast. I'd love to drive a 356 Speedster: a little shorter and lighter, a little stronger and obviously with no roof in comparison to my Beetle, so guaranteed fun! Although it's just a 1600cc car, the truth is there's no need for a bigger engine because the car has other mechanical and structural limitations such as its brakes, diagonal tires (originally) and handling on winding roads and sharp curves, so basically driving faster than what the 356 does is not very safe. Despite of that, driving a classic car is priceless. You're immediately transported into another era and think about people like your granpa buying that car brand new and driving it as a modern car at his time. You can even imagine your mother and father as little kids playing in the back seat. You just feel happy about living this kind of experience. It's amazing. BTW, dual carburetors make all the difference. The Germans did a very good job with this little car and its siblings, literally changing the world.
Yes! That game has never been remade or equalled. For the time the graphics were really good, and I almost enjoyed the slow races vs other 356's as much as the later ones with 911 turbos and beyond. It was truly a love letter to a single carmaker, and iirc it was right before they started making crossovers so the lineage wasn't tainted.
That little air-cooled 4 cylinder sounds so good! Such a gorgeous car and what a wonderful day for a drive. Mark this video under "healing time" because it sure makes me feel good.
A couple of comments. Not to be too much of an anorak but the knob next to the ignition key is a hand throttle; 356’s don’t have chokes. I’m impressed that it actually worked as they seldom do. Also, your comment about 4th gear being useless leads me to believe that a taller top gear was installed for better highway cruising. Speedsters had the so-called BBAB gear sets which were very short gears compared to the coupes and cabriolets. Fourth gear in the Speedster should be very usable. Your video was very enjoyable and it brought back lots of great memories as I just sold my ‘58 Speedster after having owned it for twenty years.
Absolutely beautiful machine! No mistaking this baby... It's a Porsche all the way. My only regret with this car is that it's out of my price range. Timeless car for some lucky person. Thanks for sharing! 👍
Optional "coupe" seats. 1969 I bought a 56 factory delivered speedster original owner with red coupe seats and factory hardtop. $500.00. 36,000 miles. drove it home. Sold the top for $500.00 Free Speedster.
This car is easy and enjoyable as you say because it's a 'normal' car by modern standards, it's easy, simple, direct, un-fussed, and not a not crazy-fast monster like so many "perfectly un-usable" sports car with a gazillion of CVs, a numb steering and suspensions that will kill your spine.
That shape, the sound, green dials, gold lettering, well done Porsche, this is why I love cars. The only thing that I have in common with that car is the choke on my Mini, pull and twist to lock and ladies were hanging bags from there and got horrible fuel economy ahaha
gotta say ive watched millons of channels like these but you by far have the clearest voice, and keep me invested during even the most boring parts, I hope one day to do something like this! keep showing off the amazing rides!
''I wouldnt do long highway juants'' meanwhile l drove a 1600 beetle from dallas tx tp argentina and back. My 356 had an 1835 fuelie in it and would cruise 100+ all day in tx heat. As a Corvair lover, I have an appreciation for air-cooled Porsches. GM learned from Porsche when designing the Corvair, and let Porsche learn from them when designing the 911 (or so I've heard).
I've had the pleasure of working on a handful of 356's. It's everything a Beetle aspires to be. I love these engines. The cylinder head design is beautiful. When you rev it, it's no VW.
Must be an absolute blast driving this car. I've got a classic Bug myself, love driving that thing. The Speedster just looks so good and it looks like it drives very smothly. Would love to take one for a spin someday!
Wow, you are the luckiest guy alive. I would love to take a junkyard version of this and just resto-mod this with a GT3 engine, custom suspension, and LED lights. A nice exhaust would be perfect too.
This is one of those old cars that's not really fast but nonetheless feels fast and is engaging to drive, because it sounds awesome and everything is mechanical. At least that's what I assume. Great vid and beautiful car!!
This is the same car my uncle had but in orange with the racing bucket seats, He had dual side view mirrors placed out on the front fenders for some reason...like the Japanese used to do. P.S Pretty sure the lights sensors don't detect your weight but are giant metal detectors, just saying...
Traffic light sensors are not triggered by weight; but rather, are trigged by metal within the inductive loop field of the wires in the pavement. Pro tip - if you ride a motorcycle make sure to stop on, or close to, the seam in the pavement so the metal of the bike triggers the sensor.
This car is a dream.....I would be hours and hours walking around this piece of the history of automotive. The sound of the engine is like a time machine, teleporting us six decades ago. This is full.....🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Thanks a lot for this test!!!!
The 356 followed Colin Chapman's "add lightness." Under 2000 lbs, with *just enough horsepower* Granted this car is 60+ year old technology, but you can see its charms. My dad had a 1968 Beetle when I was a kid. Air cooled engines, with proper maintenance, will last for a long time. Just keep the revs high. The worst downside to the old Beetles as technology was that there was no rust proofing. So many poor Beetles just rusted out.

Call me crazy, but I enjoy the silent moments in between the commentary. Just hearing the engine noise and the passing traffic. It's...serene. :)
I mean the car deserves some time to talk too.
