When I was small, I listened to the War of the Worlds on record at my aunt's house. It was narrated by Richard Burton and was an amazing audio tale!

Every time I listen to war of the worlds I can make a mental film because its described so well and composed so well that I can visualise it in my head its an amazing album the original and new generation

covid was a truly horrific pandemic so many people lost their lives.
Fun fact: the actress in this, Anna-Marie Wayne is actually the daughter of the original composer of WOTW - Jeff Wayne. Anna-Marie also plays the part of Carrie in the musical version at live performances, in which she is displayed on the stage-screen. Funnily enough, this year (2018) in the performance at Newcastle, Anna-Marie Wayne did an actual stage-performance in which her and the actor playing ‘The Journalists thoughts’ did a duet of Forever Autumn after the intermission. Anna-Marie is incredibly talented, and I am glad to see she is keeping in with her fathers work.
She's been part of her father's musical work since the first arena tour of the musical back in 2006, by simply saying one line of dialogue during 'Forever Autumn', but throughout the years when the musical had evolved, her character of 'Carrie' appeared more often in the story.
If you played this for me and told me it was Justin Hayward singing, I wouldn’t have questioned it for a second.
Only just found this in 2024. It is brilliant. 100% faithful to the original. I am a huge fan of War of The Worlds. Have been since I first heard the Album as youngster in the 70's. Well done to Garry Barlow. He sings this beautiful song so awesomely. I'd love to see Thunderchild done by Garry in this same way. Absolutely Incredible!
They should really make a movie of this version of WOTW.

@Anny Poh: Your wrong here, there is also a movie made in 1953. Also, they made a movie for the Musical version which is played on a big movie screen in the background with the orchestra. I know, because I was at one of the concerts.
There is alsof An animated version bit it's more a sequel. But it's pretty good.
I've been a fan of Jeff Wayne's musical version of "War of the Worlds' ever since I bought the eight track, (yep, I'm that old) back in 1979. This video version featuring the superb rendition of 'Forever Autumn' by Gary Barlow is visually stunning and although the song is melancholy in nature it still moves me emotionally to this day. I truly enjoy this video and in regards to sgauden02, yes, Anna-Marie Wayne is a lovely lady and quite talented. Two thumbs up to this splendid video.

I only learned of this album back in 2005 and the fact that it was released when I was 4 (1977, same year Star Wars hit the theaters) BLEW MY MIND!
Greetings William Norton: In the late spring of 1979 into the summer, I drove a delivery truck and I always had the radio tuned to KFPW in Fort Smith. The absolutely stunning Justin Hayward version of 'Forever Autumn' was always a treat when it came on the radio. One day the DJ announced that he had recently bought a copy of Jeff Wayne's musical version of 'War of the Worlds' and, 'folks' if you want to be blown away by some incredible musical pieces, then get on out to your local record store and grab you a copy. I took his advice and made plans to buy one but I got lucky as my girlfriend at the time, bought it for me. And here it is 2017, I'm not as young as back then but 'by golly', the 8 track tapes of "War of the Worlds' are still sitting right across from me in my Cassette/ DVD/ CD case. Unfortunately my last 8 track player gave up the ghost some time ago and I haven't found a new one since...lol But as a side note I did buy a copy on CD later so I could actually 'catch' up with the times..lol
Michael Todd I was in primary school when this album was released in the 70s we had a real cool teacher who brought in his record player and played it for the class that was 40 years ago I will never forget that day it was pretty awesome .
Good to see the older generation who heard the original album during its original release enjoying the new version.
My dad had the original album on vinyl and I actually found it when I was a lad and my mum played it for me and my siblings.
Needless to say it changed my life and I love the new generation too.
i love both versions justin hawayds one for me is a classic and no will ever do it better but this is a bloody good version too love it xxxx
Wow! Gave this a listen expecting it to be rubbish but it's really good! Gary Barlow's voice is brilliant - a prefect match to the original spirit of the song. I knew he was a good singer but I didn't know he was *that* good. Respect to Gary and respect to Jeff Wayne for not changing it too much and thus alienating us listeners who remember the original album so fondly.
Absolutely a gem, without a doubt. Brings back childhood memories. The Jeff Wayne experience in London was immensely impressive, so when lockdown is over I am going back again.
Never thought I'd say this, 'Buuuut, if I had a bucket list....THIS is one of those things that would be at the top'?? BTW, this video on UA-cam is the first time I knew or have heard Gary Barlows version.........really impressed, as Justin Hayward's original version is absolutely flawless!!

Ok so in the 90s a friend's older sister turned me on to this work, herd this song on the radio in her car, she said it's the Moody Blues, but the song was written for a War of the Worlds musical... we went to the record shop (well i said i was old lol) and sure enough i picked up the dual cassette (no not the 8 track, im not that old 😂)
Fast forward oh 20ish years, my GF at the time Loved this song, well PBS during its pledge season had parts of this during its broadcast. Thanks to a dvdr with a hard drive. I recorded it... took the dvd to her place... she was 1 shocked that such a thing as a War of the Worlds musical existed and 2 loved the song even more when the Forever Autumn section played 😆

This has always been in my life. My earliest memories were listening to this on tapes my uncle copies for my dad, aged about 3. I jumped when the stage production came round and splurged on a ticket in the front few rows. It was totally brilliant. Love this song, love the clip. ❤️
Although Gary is not seen in this video, I like his version of the song as well as Hayward's. This video is very dramatic and I like the animation of the tripods.
Gary is a very good singer but he is not in the same league as Justin Hayward.

A fan at the age of 19 of the 1978 original-yes, it had flaws, and yes, 39 years later the sound clarity and quality are better (new technology), but Justin Hayward of The Moody Blues OWNED this song! And the original Spirit of Man is better too!Having said that, I own this version in its entirety and enjoy them both-If there is anything music should teach us-it is simply that there is room for many interpretations of a song or a concept.ROCK ON, WORLD

3:18 seriously my worst nightmare, a tripod searching a house is one of my greatest fears. I don’t know why, but when I play Star Wars battlefront on the Hoth survival mode and an AT-ST is looking for me in an enclosed space I just can’t. Maybe because I read and watched the movies at a younger age? I really don’t know.
I used to be super terrified of the AT-ST's from Star Wars because they reminded me of of the tripods. The Empire must have known how to apply a similar fear tactic the same as the Martians did I suppose, haha.
It's quite an unique phobia. I'm glad I found this.
My mental image/headcanon design of the fighting machine is actually partly inspired by the AT-AT, as well as the Earthmover from ULTRAKILL, the Gleipnir from Ace Combat X, and weirdly enough, Tasmanian devils.

This was literally my childhood. When I was 6 I listened to the original version of TWOTW over, and over again all the time. Obviously I didn't understand the story of anything, but I just enjoyed the music (especially thunder child) so much! My mum has gone of old drawings I made of the Fighting/Handling/Flying machines in a box, And back in 2012 (or 2013, I can't remember), I was soooo excited when my mum told me we were going to see TWOTW:TNG live. I'm mainly a fan of things like Marvel, Fnaf, and The 6 Idiots nowerdays, but I still love TWOTW to this day, especially the new generation. I'm really excited for the new BBC series, plus that vr experience in London too.

I think Gary barlows version has done justice ! Justin haward was awsome and the best version but this is moving forward and into A live show now ? So give Barlow very good credit for keeping it true
I was genuinely surprised by how good this version of WOTW is, not least this song. I didn't expect Barlow to sing it as well as Hayward and he didn't BUT it's much, MUCH closer than I would have thought possible. I bought the original on vinyl back in 1980 and I still have that as well as the CD version of this. Both are superb. My kids had never heard of people like David Essex and Phil Lynott etc except as people who used to be big. The new version brought the show alive for them by using names they were more familiar with and frankly the new generation cast does an excellent job of making the show contemporary.

Autumn is my favorite season of the year. The colors are something that I look forward to. This song is the perfect definition of the season.
A film version of the musical would have been SOOOO much better than that Tom Cruise action movie gabble. The score from Jeff Wayne's musical is pure GOLD!

I had to console myself with buying the DVD of the original live performance of this back then as I missed out on getting tickets. My friend on the other had had to live in tenter hooks wondering when he would disappear as he got tickets and so I was imagining and planning his "disappearance" ;-). We are still friends and I wouldn't swap him for the word, but back then there was some debate about his life expectancy. :-D

Incorrect. Jeff Wayne really intended that song for justin hayward. He didnt know him well but remembered the song nights in white satin and after searching, he CALLED justin by phone ( from an intervieq of J.hayward himself ) . The man on d line asked " are you the guy who sang white satin?"..i have a song that i want you to sing. And that is forever autumn.

Always loved Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds since I was a very small boy, literally about 4 I'd say. Fascinated me, ignited my imagination. I remember one of my older brothers convinced me we really were invaded by Martians in the 19th century. lol. Mars has fascinated me ever since. And the stage show is so superior and so much truer to HG Wells' story than the crappy, bastardised American film takes of it. Though I prefer the original of this song it's still cool. Nice, evocative vid. :)
