  • IMAGINE A PLACE ... where as far as the eye can see, miles and miles to the horizon, you can view America as it was 300 years ago.
Imagine a place, long revered by the American Indians,
where the Cheyenne River flows in all four directions
and eagles shadows sweep rocky canyon walls. A place where wild horses run free across endless prairies,
hooves striking thunder, manes and tails flying in the wind.
Come to the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary,
experience the dream, visit their grassland home of
rocky canyons, wind swept prairies, and dark pine forests,
a home they share with coyotes, cougar, white-tail and mule deer, elk, wild turkeys, eagles and falcons.
A home where hundreds of wild horses not only live
but flourish, nurtured by the dream of a man of vision,
and the freedom he gave them.
The Sanctuary has given the wild horses that make
their home there over 10,000 years of horse freedom.
Take pride in what you have become a part of.
Enjoy the herds of sleek, healthy mustangs running where wild flowers bloom in profusion, and the sky goes on forever. . . IMAGINE A PLACE.

I think all horses should be allowed to roam free. Some people that love horses pen them up in stalls all their lives. i think it's kind of cruel, though.I love watching horses run free. i wish I lived near where wild horses roam so I could watch them all the time. It's relaxing for me.

What a beautiful place to visit.. Give great credit to Dayton who cared so much for the wild horses that he gave them a home so that they are free to live their lives the way it should be.. Have been there and I think it s the most wonderful place on earth for the beautiful wild mistang and to go see. Its such a peaceful and tranquil place...

oh my goodness! i just spent 3 wonderful days and nights at black hills wild horse sanctuary!~the horses are so very beautiful. some are in fields alone, some with cows, some with their babies, some stallions! fell in love with the choctaw ponies...only 300 left in the world and they have 11 of them! i cannot say enough...you must come see it for yourself! susan watts is the director now and she is so very kind...i went on a 2 hour guided bus tour one morning, then on a private tour on the "wild side" and the next morning got to go with a staff member to feed the horses and the cows! that evening at dusk, i took a walk and saw horses running in the plain and it was spellbinding! so magnificent and pure in their beauty and majesty. god bless dayton hyde for founding it and susan watts for making it a 501(c)(3) organization!

My native ancestors. Respected wild horses when I see wild horses feel like this is America.and that we Should have respect for all horses they have never done anything wrong to have people mistreat horses who care about us and love us and let us ride on them I wish that wild horses were not rounded up and free happy with each other can you imagine being taken from your mom and dad your grandparents siblings your herd but to have two legged creatures yell at you and separate you from your family to have someone trying to ride you before you are ready and trust them and respect them that is how the wild horse sees us or even domestic horses they can never forget their mother father or of terrible things that you have done to them.
If I was a horse I would like your respect that you treat me like how you would like to be treated or like your family.

In 1900, there were well over 1 million wild horses west of the Mississippi River. Now there are less than 75,000 and of those almost 50,000 are languishing in government feed lots.

Good that you know. Now check out what the horrible BLM is up to.
They're out to kill up a storm.
They need to be shut down.
Disgrace what they do to these majestic creatures.

I was just at the black hills, how did I miss this area? 😓😭🐴 God bless you! Why not turn those empty houses into bed and breakfast places. I would stay there in a heartbeat! It would be hard to get the city folk to leave. I'll run it for you lol

Deb I live in Hot Springs not far from the Sanctuary, it is about 10 miles south of town out in the middle of no where, like everything else here, laughs. Dayton and Susan are two really great people, I have two of their Mustangs, one is a mare off of Frosty, who is Dayton's very first mustang. And I have a mare off of 3757 ( that is the freeze brand number given to each horse by the BLM) her name is Cheyenne Wind, Frosties mare is Prairie Dancer, they are now getting up in years, not too old but mature and settled down but I tell you , two smarter animals you will never meet. If you get a chance to come here again, please do find your way out there, the huge sign is by the Mammoth site on where to turn to get out there. Enjoy my Beautiful State of South Dakota and my wonderous Hot Springs in the Black Hills you won't be sorry. smiles
