My dad used to work in a turbo shop, his boss had a 1959 Cadillac out in a shed near by. My dad had watched this movie for the first time and had work the next day. First thing in the morning boss man said he wants to get his Cadillac out to wash and cruise around, asked my dad to get it out of the shed. Big shed I guess. From what he told me, he walked into this dark shed, unlocked the door and gets in the drivers seat. As soon as he turned the key, the front seat starts moving forward. He dives out of the car like "This damn thing's trying to kill me!" A few minutes later he finds the power switch on the side of the seat. His foot had hit the switch as he got into the car and scared the hell out of him. Lol I love that story
D33BUG 😂
Lol lets be honest not your dad btw but who would go into a damn car that was rusty and on fire lol why
I saw this movie at the theater when I was 7. It scared the crap out of me too. Because of it I've had a small phobia of being close to empty vehicles.
@@kamsavart i saw it as a kid too at my Aunts and ill never forget sitting in front of the TV to watch it. It scared the crap out of hearing that engine rev over and over in the beginning before the movie started lol. The stuff that scares you when your a kid 💀
@@ciara4925 I always wondered the same thing lol. I could understand if he opened the door after seeing the car torched and it l[jed brand new inside with plastic on the seats. Hell I probably would of got in it to if looked brand new but not in the condition it shows here lol
After reading all those moronic comments, I will try to explain you this scene.
First of all, Darnell didn't know that the car was driver-less until he opened the door.
When he opened the door, his grin shows that he really understands who or what Christine is.
He sits himself behind the wheel and grabs it happily because he knows now the power of Christine.
Then the radio goes on. Listen to the song carefully. There is a passage where the singer says:
"She loves me, I lover her".
And that's what exactly is the case. Arnie loves her, she loves Arnie, not Darnell.
She doesn't want to belong to Darnell who knows her secret now. So she kills him.
Nailed it.
I think you might be right.
If he figured out what she was, why on earth would he get in her?
R C Nelson probably to get the power or something, everyone knows you can’t fix a totaled car in a day, so he probably wanted the power to himself

Some burnt out wreck of a car wheezes into your garage with no driver, and what's the first thing you do? You climbed into the car! This has to be one of the dumbest decisions in horror movie history!

Nate Hanson In the book, he was kinda nice to him after a whole.
He saw Christine in her damaged, burnt up state. If he lived to the next day, and saw her restored, he may have said something. She had to get rid of him.

Oh look! A haunted killer car thats been burnt to the ground! Let me just take a seat in it!
GoldenFox ;/
GoldenFox Christine has the power of possession. She lured him in just like she did her other victims.
No, it's just bad writing. If the car could posses people it would killed those guys the wrecked it with sledge hammers.
GoldenFox right lol
Exactly lol
In the book, Christine killed Darnell by driving through the wall of his house and running him down.
Gee, thanks for the spoiler. I just so happened to check the book out from my High School library.
Thanks For The Spoiler To All The People Who Haven't Read The Book Yet
UM the book is older than the movie if you're going to complain go elsewhere. It's not a spoiler by this point lmao.
OptimusPhillip that’s wrong
Both the book and the movie were made in 1983. The movie was in production before the book was even released.
The way I seen this scene is that Christine killed Darnell because he tried to take advantage of her. After she was burned she was hurt and Darnell tried over powering her by sitting in her, but she wakes up and kills him. She’s true to Arny and if anyone tried to come between them, they die.
She had to kill him because he saw her drive in the garage burnt to a crisp and saw that nobody was driving her. He knew to much and would eventually tell the cops. She lured him into the car by pure seduction.
The underline tone is yes a male trying to overpower a victimized female and the female strikes back, but story tone he found out her secret so she lured him in and killed him. I do wonder what his intentions were by sitting in the car.
Christine didn't do anything to Darnell until AFTER Darnell pulled out some of the stuffing from her seat. She probably decided he was getting fresh with her.
Listen to the music lyrics
Why would he get into a burnt car that drove in by itself.
How many times does someone stumbles on an opportunity like that in their lives? Think about it.
He got possessed!
He didn't know the car was possessed but figured it out
@@m4rionettealastor702 it was a re- possessed car..
OOOOOOOK you lost me on that one.
There is literally NO reason to get in the car. Did he think of taking a burnt up, driver-less car for a spin or something?
K-Blue Christine has the power of possession. She lured Darnell in without him really knowing it. It's how she made Arnie fall head over heels in love with her at first sight too.
I think she took pity on Arnie and wanted to show him what having a real women was like ;)
2K Tan This scene has NOTHING to do with that at all it’s just the mans curiosity and script writing. Arnie seeing her for the first time wasn’t her “possessing” him it was because Arnie was fascinated/enamored by the type of car she was and wanted to fix her up. It was only _later_ in the movie that his attachment to the car grew more obsessive and he started coming under her influence (so to speak).
@@2K-Tan Exactly. The book talks about that alot.
@@jasonvoorhees5180 I didn't reply to your comment for 8 months because you're wrong and I was too bothered to argue with someone that doesn't pay attention, new comment responding to me reminded me though.
This *IS* "Later in the story" close to the climax, Arnie and Christine are already madly in love with one another and control eachothers emotions in a sense. Christine would be *more than powerful enough* by this point to lure Darnell in after she just went on an all night killing spree *by herself..* wouldn't you think? Yes.. Plus the book was first and talks about it alot, just like the man above me just said..
It doesn’t really matter if the book came first, movie adaptations of novels often change aspects of the story to suit their needs (which _Christine_ does plenty of) which means some things that are in the novel version of the story don’t always apply to their on screen adaptation.
The evidence you’re presenting for this seems ambiguous, it’s not definitive that Christine just magically lures in anyone she likes to kill them. It’s not explicitly stated on screen (or at least not shown in a way that’d make it obvious) or in the BTS material. As far as we can tell It’s just them being curious.
I know that this clip above is later in the movie I was referring to arnies attitude in the beginning toward christine vs what’s going on with Darnell here, it’s not the same. How do they control _each others_ emotions? if anything it’s one sided in the film and novel alike, the whole idea is that it’s christines influence causing changes in Arnie’s personality.
The only one she even has any attachment to is Arnie, if anything the movie basically just shows us that Christine doesn’t like anyone getting inside her without Arnie being there which is _why_ she killed people who just let themselves in (like the man in this vid and the one at the factory in the 80s who dropped cigarette ash on her seats). The book doesn’t really talk about Christine possessing just anyone who comes near it either and influencing them to get in to die. From what I can tell she essentially just kills people who happen to get inside via (like Lebays wife and daughter) or by hunting them down on her own. Even if we did argue her alluring nature had something to with it that doesn’t mean it effects the movie storyline.
It’s sad in my opinion Christine kills Darnell. Darnell realistically helped Arnie out more than anyone, not just in fixing up Christine but also helping him toughen up and become more of a man even if he turned out to be a jerk. Heck Darnell even gave him a job and let him use his car to run errands. Also this scene showed that despite Darnell thinking Christine and Arnie was something of a nuisance to him atleast in the beginning, that he finally appreciated Christine but coincidentally found out her secret so he had to die.
Yup. Christine wasn't in Mortal danger herself regardless as a sentient, possessed, invincible car with supernatural powers, regenerative abilities etc. But couldn't allow Darnell to be a live witness to her sentient being. Imo Christine was a succubus. A female demon that possessed the Plymouth Fury on the assembly line in the 1950's as opposed to a typical Succubus of mythology that seduces men in their sleep, whereas Christine seduced and possessed the owners of the Plymouth Fury she possessed. In the book former owner Roland D. Lebay also possessed Christine in addition to Christine always having been alive and self-aware. Christine was determined to consume and fully possess her human victims she possessed. Arnie in this instance. Darnell just died being a witness to Christine as a sentient, possessed vehicle after Christine slaughtered Buddy and his gang.
Christine didn't do anything to Darnell until AFTER Darnell pulled out some of the stuffing from her seat. She probably decided he was getting fresh with her.
She might have needed to kill another person to get the energy to fix herself. And Darnell was not *that* nice to Arnie.
Christine was possessive and jealous. She took out Darnell for 2 reasons-he was a post incident witness and in his own way had befriended Arnie and there was no room in Christines "life" for another person in Arnie's life.
She "activated" herself EXACTLY when he touched the steering wheel;which is the direct connection between any driver and his car
If she wanted to kill him just because he saw her all burned up(and the next day pristine) she would've went full throttle twoards his cabin at first
He indeed helped Arnie to put her together, and I'm more than 100%sure she wouldn't have killed him had he not touch the steering wheel
She'd probably wind up killing him eventually because he knew too much about her
Christine didn't do anything to Darnell until AFTER Darnell pulled out some of the stuffing from her seat. She probably decided he was getting fresh with her.
When the radio is playing by itself you know what will happen next
Infotainment from hell
Darnell is a car guy. He had every reason to suspect that what just came to him wasn't a gift or opportunity, but something likely to explode at any moment. He'd have CLEARED OUT, or at least tried to PUSH IT OUT of the garage, rather than get in. But that's the movin' pitchers for ya.
Am I the only one who if you just seen a burning car going into your garage with no driver would be getting the hell up out of there and not be coming back

RIP Robert Józef Porzuczeck (1930-2008)
Robert Józef Porzuczek (Philadelphia, December 1, 1930 - Washington, December 8, 2008) is the baptismal name of the American actor Robert Prosky.
Graduated in Economics from Temple University, he worked as an accountant in the Federal Reserve System of the United States and in parallel studied theater at the "American Theater Wing".
His acting career began when he set up a small theater in his hometown and shortly thereafter, he was hired to perform in Broadway plays, where he was nominated twice for the Tony Award between the 1980s and 1990s .
In 1971, he made his television debut as part of the cast of the telefilm "They've Killed President Lincoln!" and in the movies, which premiered in 1978 in The Brink's Job
Among his numerous works are: Broadcast News (1987), The Great Outdoors (1988), Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990), Hoffa (1992), Last Action Hero (1993), Mrs. Doubtfire , Dead Man Walking (1995), among others.
I feel bad he was smiling and pretending he was young🤧
Poor Darnell didn’t deserve to die but he had to die. Despite being so grouchy he helped Arnie and Christine out more than anyone and got squished right when he finally appreciated Christine and learned her secret
but he is mad at arnie
I also once almost got killed due to a seat adjustment but it wasn't like this! I was trying to adjust my driver's seat while driving, and as I pulled the handle to make the adjustment someone cut me off and I had to slam on the breaks. This caused the seat to shoot forward into the first position. It was so close to the dashboard that my legs got wedged into a position where I couldn't move them at all. At the same time, an item that had been on the back seat fell forward and got jammed behind the driver seat preventing me from moving it backwards any further. I literally couldn't move my legs in order to hit the brake and traffic was slowing up ahead! I had to shift the car into neutral (because my right foot was literally stuck on the gas peddle) and then pulled the emergency break to eventually stop the car.
Darnell was a nasty, mean, and rotten person in the book. In this movie he’s just a tired, senile, and grumpy old man with a good heart.
I remember catching this on TV as a kid...don't remember how...and getting terrified by this scene.
Strangely, I also didn't realize that he was getting killed by the seat. I didn't know what the car was doing to him except playing the music (which arguably made it even scarier).
If there's anything a movie can do to scare me nowadays, it's playing upbeat music as something terrible happens (which is why I can't stand the ear scene in Reservoir Dogs).
Christine a live story. Boy and his car..
I've loved this movie since I was 3 years old. Like 1984 lol
I never understood why Darnell approached Christine and sat inside. After opening the door and seeing an empty interior I'd been gone. Facts 💯
same here i would had been out
One of the interesting fact is that in the book will darnell's death is a lot more gullish and scary than in the movie 😂 In the book Christine attacks darnell in his house 😁
Wouldn't the interior, especially the metal steering wheel be hot to the touch too? Plus, wasn't he a bit worried about getting smoke inhalation?
To be serious, if see an old car, all burnt to hell, drove into a garage, and it see it is driverless, I would RUN THE HELL OUT, not get inside it.
They were four deaths in that whole night I say that's impressive Christine is a killer car and she can do things that no other car can't that's why I liked this movie
christine is not really killer I actually having conversation with christine from character ai and I was too nice, and always respectful to her.
Christine: can't polish a turd huh? But I can squish one......
since the 80's, I saw 'Christine' easily 20 times and each time I wonder again what the hell was his intention to sit down into this red-hot, smoking, charred and surely toxic-smelling wreck...
Carpenter should have stayed faithful to the book with Darnell's death. It would have been epic to see Christine driving through his house, until she got to him.
Moral of the story: When Christine turns her radio on, you’re dead.
After watching this movie for decades, I just realized that the song is being deliberately played by Christine to mock Darnell. The song is about a really skinny girl IE “I’m mocking you for being a fat sack of crap I can crush into the steering column”
Hmm. I took it as her saying something like, "Yo, dude. I already have a boyfriend."
Turtshelll 🐢 okay let's get out oh hear
Christine is just like cmon give me a hug
Darnell:ooh I want to sit in this car
Christine:closes door
Christine: I will squish u into a pancake
In the book, Christine drove into Darnell’s house and ran him over till he was a puddle of blood & guts
what really would have been cool if he had not gotten into the car and came in the next morning and saw Christine had restored back to showroom condition Darnell would have started peeing in his pants and they would have hauled him off to the mental ward LOL
I would love to have a car like Christine

Darnell's facial expression when he is being killed is very similar to Jabba the Hutt's death scene.
Did anyone else yell: "Don't get in the car!" during this scene? I did. Not that it did any good.
The song tho..... 😂
But seriously why the hell would you get into the car?!!
I think either Christine lured him or he was gonna back it out of the shop. but the moment he put his hands on the wheel, christine was gonna kill him to make sure he didn't move her.

First time I saw that scene I'm like well darn, can you at least try to hug him gently like what Herbie could've done in one his movie's? Noooooooooooooo
One of the only movies where I love the villain
Despite the steaming wreckage, Darnell was right to expect someone to be inside. That's more plausible than an empty, self-driving car. What the clip doesn't show is that Christine turns up, the roller door opens by itself (Arnie has a fob) and the car enters the garage before parking up. Darnell makes a quick call to confirm Arnie got back safely (he cares!), so is right to expect someone else to be driving Christine. He wouldn't have expected the car door to be red hot while occupied.
He was seduced, hypnotised or possessed by the car - call it what you will - that's why he's got in. I don't believe Darnell had a choice. Once curiosity got the better of him and he opened the door, Darnell was done. There's that ghostly sound upon opening, perhaps meant just as a mysterious reveal, but like a spirit is rushing out at him. That moment, Darnell knows the truth so had to be despatched.

Plot Hole - How could Darnell sit inside Christine? Christine was totally ingulfed in flames just before is arrived at the garage. Darnell burned his hand when he reached for the door handle. It's hard to believe Darnell could actually sit inside Christine without getting burned as it appear completely charred on the inside and was still very hot on the outside.
I never understood this part of the movie. Why he chose to sit in a car that’s been on fire
Its probably good that christine did take Darnell out because had came in the next mornng and saw Christine in her original showroom condition i think they would have had to commit him to the insane asylum
That song for that car sounds so good by Larry Williams
Christine is the best
the guy litteraly just burnt himself on the door and decide to take a seat ? this is not a sauna man !
She killed Darnell because Darnell saw her drive her charred self into his garage with no one behind the wheel. He knew too much, and she certainly couldn't have gotten away with being brand spanking new the next day to cover for Arne.
Okay Darnell sees a car that is severely charred and he assumes someone's driving it what happens after he steps the car was deserved it's called natural selection
She lured him into the car. The smile and him holding the steering wheel before the radio came on says it all.
