Huge shout to Chris of Westcott Designs for shooting AND editing this video for me while I was in Utah! I think he did an amazing job! Can't wait to see what Jeff and his team make for the new GX550!
I have a 2022 GX460 that’s the same color as the one in the video. After seeing that one I want to drive mine out to Westcott Designs and have them make a duplicate.
You can purchase a 2021 Lexus Certified GX Luxury with Sport and Off-Road Packages for 45K to 55K. Less if you don’t care about Lexus Certified. That leaves a whole lot of money on the table to “Fix” the front, sides, and rear, plastic. Start with a Victory Blitz Front Bumper in Aluminum - much improved approach angle and looks like it came with the vehicle. Light enough that it won’t mess up your handling👍!! Included: Mark Levinson Sound System with CD Player - Dual pane acoustic glass - Fulltime 4WD with Center locking diff - ATRAC, MTS, and Crawl Control - KDSS and proper off-road controls on the center console next to the gear lever - Full off-road camera system👍 Electronic or Air Lockers (Front and Rear) available after-market. Proven V8 reliability💪💪!! What’s not to like🤷🏼♂️?!
This is exactly what I did. And I’m not lying these GX 460s are getting traded in for the new GXs andddd I think people are starting to realize the value and they are getting bought up fast. Several ones I was shopping for trying to get a steal ended up getting scooped up and had to pull the trigger on one
The barn door is designed to easily access the roof rack from the rear. Unfortunately, there is no custom option for a rear-opening box to take full advantage of the design.
The money I could throw into my 2018 GX460 and make it nearly perfect wouldn't touch a new GX 550. Add that to the proven reliability of the 460 and the answer is clear. I might revisit the 550 in about 5 years when all the bugs are worked out. Turbos needing repalced and being considered a wear item by Lexus doesn't just instill me with confidence.
Great comparison Jon. Looking forward to more content from the Utah excursion. I'm anxious to see what Jeff comes up with for Overtrail you featured in the video.
Only thing about the wood on a steering wheel is that it gets slick when you are driving with sweaty hands. I prefer the leather. We had an RX and it had wood, too. I hated it. At least they only dropped to the V-6. You can replace that rocker panel on the 460 with one from a 4RNR Limited and get rid of having to cut the step off. You did a good job with this walkaround. I hope you do one for this 550 after John gets finished with it.
I mispoke here on the rocker panel. The 4RNR Limited is the trim line that will NOT work. It has an attached step. You want a rocker that doesn't have a step built in. Also, the shape of the rear door at the bottom rear actually still flares out. I am sorry, but I cannot get along with the ends of the original rocker with the lower half cut off.
I like both, I would probably go with the 550 for MPG as I have a 2023 Tacoma TRD OR ACLB for Overlanding and longevity. Might just save money and go for a 6th Gen T4R.
The GX 550 definitely comes with some very positive upgrades. However, I think there are too many things it missed. Exposed rear wiper, should have kept it tucked like the 460, KDSS only available in Oveertrail, so not standard, I've been inside the new one and it does not feel like you are in a luxury SUV 460 is better. Taking away the top air vents also shows a bit of a cheap shortcut . I have the Black lIne edition and even mine has the top air vents and second row heated seats. The engineers must have forgotten to design an integrated trailer hitch so it looks like they just slapped one on at the last minute. Gas savings is not even worth mentioning since there's 1 MPG difference. The turbo engine will need to prove itself. Not ready to give up 2022 460. Nice comparison though, thank you.
Exactly. Lexoyta interior is where the cost cutting occurred, as well as the loss of KDSS, the exposed wiper is awkward when opening the rear window and it will also freeze up as it’s exposed now. The engine I’m sure will be reliable but not as reliable as the V8. Upright windshield is a chip magnet, and the mirrors are great for off-roading but don’t look like they belong on a luxury vehicle. Throw in the ADMs the dealers are charging and it’s crazy.
Physical buttons rule over a touch screen! The interior of the 550 looks Spartan vs the 460 interior. I'd wait a few years for the 550 to get the bugs worked out!
I’d take the lc250. I can’t get over the interior screens in the GX. They’re going to age like a heavy smoker. I do wonder if they’ll release more interior colors for further model years.
Isn't it just a 1 mpg difference in fuel economy? I keep seeing folks mention improved gas mileage as a reason to get the 550 over the 460, but it seems like it's a non-factor.
@TRDJon there are 5 LC250 trims outside the US, only two were brought here, somehow the base GX doesn't have 3 zone climate control. Think the huge miss is the new 4runner might not have 3 zone climate control
