Did I Buy The Wrong One??? GX550 vs Land Cruiser

- In this video, I compare the new Lexus GX550 to the new Land Cruiser 250 series. These vehicles are very similar in their own way, but very different at the same time.

Thanks Blake! Check out his review of my LC here: ua-cam.com/video/Qd53jxgndRg/v-deo.htmlsi=3CnQuc6Hovao11iv
Thank you for video! I actually see it the opposite, I would take the KDSS over the LC for driving, and the LC for the practical MPG and lesser power but adequate power. Plus I would not trust that Lexus twin turbo V6 long term.
What color is the GX?
Like here if you are team GX 550
The GX definitely looks more menacing on the road.
If the engine didn't have rod bearing issues
@@BrianNC81 They’re being recalled and repaired so I don’t see the big deal.
@@JJS432 I would still wait a year for them to get it sorted so new ride doesn't spend a long time in the shop
@@JJS432Toyota is only fixing the engines that have failed, they are not sure yet how many engines are actually impacted (they are not gonna replace the 100k engines sold). The proble is some engines are failing with 2k miles and others with 50k miles. And they are replacing only the shortblock, not putting a new crate engine, wich means the tech need to taking apart the whole engine… not bueno.
GX is the sexiest SUV under $100k not even close to
The GX looks amazing in person.
i’m a single dude and the gx is so sexy that if i had the money i’d buy the gx without thinking twice about a 2 door or 4 door in this price range. pointless for me? yes. but so worth it.
We went with the GX instead of the LC. My husband said LC was too plastic. I thought the GX was pretty smooth. Then again I’m coming from a 2017 lifted taco. Anything is smooth.
I like both. But that 550 is eye candy
10k more for the GX is a no brainer.
GX is the better buy hands down, if mpg and msrp isn’t a problem then its an obvious choice.
A buddy of mine just bought a pre owned 2018 Land Cruiser and I'd take that trusty V8 over either of these new vehicles
Terrible mpg on that huge thing. It just lumbers along and wanders all over road at high speeds. Reliable V8 but not a good daily driver.
I'm driving my 2018 LC, just passed 40k miles. Just put new Nitto Terra Grapplers on it. Running strong, riding smooth on the highway. I was considering a new LC for my Daily. Wishing for another V8 option. I have a 2012 Nissan LX 1500 with their V8, my employees drive it with no issues, several different drivers. I may go Backwards to a low mileage V8 Sequoia. My current daily driver, 2015 Honda Pilot, 180k miles. Mileage has sucked, maintenance has sucked. Don't think I will buy another Pilot. Think my Chevy Astros with the 4.3 Six Cylinder and Jeep inline 6 were great. I also run around in a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado. That V8 is strong as heck after 200,000 miles. I have 9 vehicles for my business. In 36 years I have driven many but never much interest in the Ford V8 unless we're renting a van to Florida!
When you can afford a card at this price you do not think about saving a few hundred a year on gas@andyleo8418
@@andyleo8418just keep driving your Prius😂
@@Silverfox1982 ok, I'll wave at you while you're filling up 🤣🤣💸
For me, i prefer the land cruiser for its more heritage look, yet I'm not sold on the four cylinder hybrid, Toyota should have stuck a six under that hood. As for the new 4runnner, i think she's lost her identity, which means if i ever trade my 5th gen in, i'll probably go for the land cruiser. For me, as for loving the 4runnner for so many years, this time round, it could be a game changer. I'm so disappointed with the new look. Looks like an older revamped Dodge Durango or the Tacoma. Sorry for babbling. It's a great comparison video, though 👍
I completely agree. As a '22 4Runner Limited owner who has a deposit on a new Landcruiser Landcruiser Edition, I have driven 4Runners for years and have enjoyed them. The new one looks far too rounded and softened. I prefer the chiseled / masculine look. The Landcruiser has that look. I'll keep my 4Runner alongside the new Landcruiser.
@georgetown8986 that would be a couple to hang on to, I only have space for one inside my garage. and i don't think my wife would like me to take her spot in front of the house. 🤔
Gx 550 all day
Team Fj cruiser
Thank you guys for doing this video. I feel like a lot of people are in between these two vehicles. Hearing from actually owners helps.
I just went 4Runner… I couldn’t get the extra 20k for the GX but man, I want one.. maybe next time
I’m enjoying your new Land Cruiser content and I’m sure others are curious as well. I bought a 4runner (again) based in part by your channel content.
Heck ya man! Congrats on your 4Runner!
Jon’s 4Runner content reeled me in and just purchased my 2024
Heck ya! Last of the OG!!!!
Just got the word..My GX550 OT+ Nori coming in next week. Love both these vehicles and I don’t think you can go wrong on either. Plus, will look nice next to my FJ.
Ohhhhh man that Nori Green!!!! 🤤
@@TRDJon had an allocation on a first edition meteor shower. Was a tough choice. Green got me.
I like them both but I’m gonna have to go with the gx because of the v6
For sure a good driving rig!
@@TRDJonboth fantastic rigs tho. Be happy with either.
The GX has such a nice front end
For sure does!
The front lights fit the right vehicle. Gx and LC change over wouldn’t work. They both look good on the rig they’re on. Thanks for sharing.
I think It’s the worst. That’s why I picked the first edition.
Just look like a Kia😅
@@rbb1111enjoy that 4cyl.👍🏻
Looked at both and decided on the LC. The GX mpg is shit and didn’t think the interior was any better than the LC. I like how the LC had more buttons on the dash versus hunting for controls on the touchscreen. I think the LC has more style and I also think it will hold it’s value better than the GX.
GX550 interior big let down imho. More Toyota than Lexus.
@@paulbugoni2846 In some posts, I see people claiming that the GX interior is much nicer than that of the LC, but that doesn't come through in videos. Is there really much of a difference in the material quality?
Couldnt agree more.
New LC really good drive. Way more power than expected.
GX all day
Killin it with the videos dude! Great new tint!
Thanks so much. I’m glad yall are enjoying them!
Just don't trust that 3.4 v6 yet. Toyota needs to fix the issues first
You definitely did not buy the wrong vehicle after hearing about the GX 550 gas mileage and low 400 W power converter. There’s no way that is better than the Land Cruiser.
also the fact that stop and go traffic cruise control is a subscription
You are high as a kite. That is not even a real LC😂
That was fun! Looking forward to doing 250 series vs 200 series next….and maybe some drag races 😎
Drag race!!!! Lets goo!
GX550 of course. V-6 > I-4
15mpg on premium < 22 mpg on regular
@@andyleo8418LC takes premium too
Great review and comparison as always. I’m curious with the cool box where do you put your normal stuff that you would have in a center console? Is there enough storage elsewhere?
Honestly not really. The glovebox is ok but not huge.
Dude..."Peasant blocker" never heard that before, but makes sense lol
He stole that from redline reviews. He used to say that back in 2018-2020
I'd just get a LC 1958 and then either paint or wrap the roof a contrasting color. $82K for the Lexus versus $58K for the LC 1958. Thats the comparison I do. The Lexus is almost 50% more money.
Solid choice
I seen a gx550 the other day, and it had presence!! Can't wait to see a lc as well!
For sure does!
for me Exterior ill go for LC for a classic looks. engine and interior ill go GX for sure.
It’s honestly pretty disappointing that you can’t have the perfect version of this vehicle. Both have their pluses and minuses. It’s crazy for the price. Also, I bet that battery pack has something to do with that gas tank size. Also, the engine sound, sounds like the RAV4 prime. It’s fast but it sounds like you are breaking the thing when you get on it.
If the LC had the v6 it would be game over
Inline engine with hybrid and onboard 2400w of power? I'll take the LC, I dont need my SUV to be a hotrod as much as I like the right pedal.
Where is the compass located in both trucks ?
Both of these vehicles need to be sent to Westcott Designs to have them built out.
First thx for the content Jon. Very interesting. Second, I can’t believe the mpg of GX. As someone else already mentioned, pretty unheard of in 2024. That mileage is matched by the 3UR V8. When comparing the LC to GX, I gotta go with GX for looks and ride style. LC for the roots of off roading.
Jon, can you do a side by side comparison to the 5G 4R, please sir 🙏🏾?
I own 100 series Landcruiser …. And vote for the GX… it seems like Toyota forgot the LC was its Flagship .. and now GX and upcoming 4Runner will be all too similar!
Hey Jon can u check if the gx’s retractable luggage cover thing works on the lc? Everyone on the lc forum wants to kno.
Oh man I had no idea
@@TRDJon lol everyone excited about getting their new LC. We over looked it
Land Cruiser Gang all day
Alllllll day
Hey man your Land Cruiser is awesome. Keep it stock honestly lol. It looks so good and it is plenty high and capable. Just keep it comfortable and reliable to drive
That’s for the input man! I appreciate it!
I agree. Lifting and bigger tires absolutely ruin the look of vehicles. Makes them look hillbilly.
I like the gx550 much better.
So, you mentioned it on the GX, but I can only assume all LCs are full-time 4x4?
Can you turn off all the annoying nanny beeps?
Yes and yes. Sorry about that!
This is a great video thanks for all your efforts. This could be a pillow fight. The absolute wild card in both vehicles, new 4Runner release in Fall. I want to test all 3 once dealers have all available in stock. Availability by me is very scattered right now which to be expected. I like the look of both but for me i just have to throw in 4Runner as the 3rd option. I want to test the drive ability of 4Runner for everyday commutes, sound and feel on road. I love the looks of all. Me personally it’s going to come down to comfort, reliability, practicality, daily commute, gas mileage, fit and finish. Living in Northeast, need to be prepared for all the junk the roads and weather throw at us here. I just want the car the last really long time and I want it all to just make sense for me. In the end, after whichever car I buy, when the new car smell dust wears off, I dont want to be looking back 6 months later saying I shouldn’t have bought this car.
what is your gas milage on LC?
its at 21.7
The suspension might feel better with the added weight of the battery in the back.
If you modify a land cruiser with different wheels and tires, something wider, does it void the warranty?
Nah it won’t
I saw a YT video where a new owner of a GX had to fill the tank at about 260-280 miles (probably all city driving, like many of us) that terrible range for a vehicle in 2024!
Yea that’s pretty bad for sure
My 2004 4runner and 2020 4runner get average of 14.9 MPG, you just brush it off and be appreciative your not taking it to the dealer for constant repairs. It's smiles per miles 😉🤣😎
I was recently in Destin from Acworth for a baseball tournament and that dang traffic on 98 to ft Walton was ridiculous! The infrastructure just cant handle all those people.
Crab island was insane out there!
Did you buy the wrong one?
My LC is scheduled to arrived next week. Do I need to change to GX?
Nahhhhh enjoy the LC. I like it a bit more. Not a lot but a little bit more
LC actually has better articulation than the GX soooooo
Truuuuuuuuuue
Ya as if people are really taking these rolling off rocks and squeezing through trails. 10 years later as a used vehicle most likely.
@@gunsmokezz ya a chiron is the fastest car in the world, how many people are driving around at 250+ mph?
@@gunsmokezzspeak for yourself. Day one of ownership I have 35’s lined up, then I’m off for a three week off-road trip.
You got the right one.
The Lexus engine is going to have bearing failure very soon😂😂😂
Yeah because there is no way that tiny 4 popper will have issues, huh?🙄
I prefer the better angles of the LC
Here in Australia we get the climate control in the rear like the LC first edition, only 3500kg towing (7700lbs), different rear map holders they are the fake leather as opposed to the plastic in the US. I think the Australian spec seems better than the US.
You should upgrade to the GX next, maybe in few years when it is more refined. I think the reviews are very good. It would be cool to own the LC and GX and have them parked next to each other.
Not a bad idea! I like it!
Does the engine in the gx 550 blow up like the tundra ?
Not yet
I chose the GX Overtrail and never looked back. Last week I added a Westcott roof rack and Westcott lift and fitted it with 35s and 17 inch method bead grip wheels. I also had Westcott remove the runningboards and install the land cruiser rock rails. After 2200 miles I was averaging 19.1 MPG. It’s been a week since the Westcott build and the MPG has dropped to 18.1, and I expect it to go lower. I love the V6 and would never want to give up cargo space for the battery packs. I bought it at the MSRP of $71,474. You can easily spend that much money or more on the LC, so I think the GX is a better truck and a better value. I absolutely love my GX!
Frank!!! Hope all is well sir!!! So glad to hear that you are enjoying it still! Hope to see you again soon!
So.....what will blow first? The GX engine or the LC transmission? Hopefully by that time Toyota will have a solution for those issues.
GX probably premium gas only and that luxury vehicle insurance on top…
Landcruiser is Premium fuel as well...unfortunately.
Yes to Costa Rica and the LC76!
Please take the LC for a Costa Rica trip.
I bought a GX 550 OT+ in silver and it does not disappoint!
i feel the same, just got a 23 armada , insane engine
You’re content is amazing. Love the GX 550.
Thanks a ton!
Both are awesome. Well done Toyota/Lexus.
We have a Nori Green Overtail + arriving in the next couple weeks. Can’t wait.
Good choice! Amazing color!
Low mile 2021 200 is what I've decided to buy after wanting both of these.
I like the way the LC looks more, but I like the engine and suspension on the GX.
Test drove the First Edition LC and I was impressed but there is a waiting list so I am probably going to get it after a year or two.
Is that a base Overtrail? Or the Overtrail +?
+
I like the LC but for the price the GX is the one
Oh man I love the Overtrail + IT may be our next long term driver
OOh yea?????
Land cruiser to me makes more sense and looks more gracious
The peasant blockers 💀
So why does the sequioa and tundra get 22 mog combined and the Gx get 17 mpg combined? Thought they were the same drive train
Thats for the hybrid versions of those
Not a fan of the GX front-end, but overall, the Overtrail is a better value.
Owners are complaining that the hood on the GX shakes/vibrates at freeway speeds. Did you notice that?
I went and sat in one. Hood was easy to push down as if it is not 100% secure. It had play in movement. Not sure if you can screw down from inside but why would it not be set to that?
Flutters at higher speeds some owners say.
I think it's aluminum instead of steel, and a few owners and reviewers have said it is an issue. Most don't.
I can see a lot of those boards in the back getting damaged in the LC.
The bumpiness is likely caused by the eKDSS.
Landcruiser all day every day….. landcruiser has better off-road geometry, better economy, better inverter, better colors and looks, better price…
LC looks "silly" and playful (maybe it's the boy-ish kid color), whereas GX looks more purpose built and "mature". 🤔
GX looks like the bad ass older brother. Landcruiser looks like the fun loving goofy younger brother.
GX all day!!! Coming from a 2016 GX, In line for the 2025 Overtrail+
Nice Land Cruiser. The mirrors look like they are from an FJ Cruiser (with some minor mods). Plastic front ends deter from the off road look. The GX550 front end looks like my wife's 2023 Camry. Two rows would keep me from dumping my Bronco for the Land Cruiser. Tow capacity on the LC is pretty dang good at 6000 compared to 3500 on my Bronco. Between the two, GX and LC, the LC looks like the better buy.
Both use premium gas ?
Yes
Why did you remove those silver wheels/ tires
It just really needs a lift to look proper with those imo
@@TRDJon honestly I wasn’t digging the silver wheels
Gx is the ultimate 👌
Really thought I was going to prefer the GX, but I'd prefer the LC. I just need the LC to have the role down rear window of the 4runner
That would be rad
Yes
I'm holding out for the 2025 SR5 4Runner with the NON-hybrid 4 cyl. It'll probably be about $46,000 vs $58,000 for the 1958 Land Cruiser and have similar ride and handling qualities. It won't turn heads like the Land Cruiser and will take 9 seconds to do 0-60 mph vs 8 seconds for the Land Cruiser, but that's still enough power to maintain speed up any grade.
I’m still Land Cruiser 1958, especially if they were to come out with a TRD Off-Road model.
Spent a couple of days in a new Land Cruiser in Moab. Everything I didn't like about the Land Cruiser is fixed by the GX550.
The inside of the Land Cruiser felt cheap / not premium. Seats were amazing, but all the other touch plastic was hard. Powertrain made good power but if the GX makes the same power without the higher rear deck (due to the hybrid battery) I'll take it.
I like the front of LC and back of GX..
That GX has a mean eye compared to the googlie eyed LC. My 07 FJ just reached 200k plus miles. Plan on getting an LC but not sure about the 4L engine.
You need to take your LC to Rubicon during Rubithon event. That would be an epic content 😎
When’s that???
land cruiser is more my style. I think LC is more for the offroad guys and gx for the family or mall crawlers
Who’s got any of them in stock
If there’s like a $20k difference in price I’d pick an LC
But doesn't the GX have the recalled engine?
No it doesn't
This platform does not suit to EV or PHEV. There is no room for battery. I would like LC prime. I have Rav4 prime. I just need more luggage capacity.
GX looks better and has an off road pack with actual all terrain tires . LC needs a TRD package and a hybrid 6 .
Do the 200 vs 24 LC video!
Expense alone
Hard pill to swallow paying 70k+ for a 4cylinder
Not knocking anything other than that
Larger sway bar with the KDSS is gonna be more firm/rigid for off-roading and not as compliant on road
BTW the LC looks better with those stock rims vs the other ones in another video
For sure man. Needs a lift on it for those bigger tires
