  • Is there any real difference between a Baofeng UV-5R and a regular GMRS radio? If so, how is a GMRS radio any different from a UV5R? In this video I answer these age-old questions and also talk about if it is legal or breaks FCC rules to transmit on GMRS channels using a UV-5R Baofeng radio.

      The chinese radios are not terribly hard to program, manually. But after 10 channels, it does get old...fast! The FREE, Chirp software is a game changer, for programming, editing, and cloning radios. The program is easy to operate and figure out.

    I was talking on 462.625 on my UV-5R then I went over to 462.575 and was talking on my BF-F8HP for a while and before all of this I was on 462.6375 on my UV-9R, is it just a coincidence that there's a black suburban parked in front of my house?

    I used chirp, preloaded my frs/gmrs/murs/marine and noaa/ham bands.
    Tip- when in chirp, save the room skip the frs pre loading. You will get what you need with the Gmrs preloaded frequencies.

    Two grandchildren were here for the day. My wife entertained as I worked in my office.
    During a break, I pulled out two old GMRS HTs and taught them how to use them.
    They had a blast.
    An hour or two later, the 7 year old showed me that an antenna had broken. He omitted the fact that he bit it, wondering what it was like 😳
    They played more.
    An hour later, I walked into the kitchen to find the 5 year old chewing on the other HT's antenna, shattering it's top.
    I have a shrink wrap set ready to give them for Christmas.
    1) now I know they'll like them
    2) and I doubt they'll survive long

    I’m new to GMRS and have several questions. I’ll only ask one at a time because my brain might overheat if I try to do too much. When talking about the range of a handheld GMRS radio such as the Baofeng or Wouxun, why can they only transmit a few miles radio to radio but can hit a repeater that is 30 or 60 miles away? Thanks in advance.

    • @TheNotaRubicon
      @TheNotaRubicon  3 роки тому +4

      When transmitting radio to radio you have two tiny, and usually not very-well tuned antennas.. you are usually also both low to the ground, with many obstacles between you (trees, buildings, hills).. Repeaters generally have very large, perfectly tuned antennas, and are generally located atop high mountains, with virtually nothing between you and the repeater.
      BUT - In many cases you can talk many (10, 20, 30 miles) radio to radio, if both were atop mountains with nothing between them.

    So what's the big advantage to using a ham radio over a GMRS radio, that there has to be a law saying you can't do it? To me, from what I've heard you say, it's more of a pain to use a ham, but what do I know. Keep up the great work.

      One big thing, is the UV5R's manufacturer didn't pay the FCC a fee to have that radio tested and certified for GMRS use. Supposedly, as such the UV5R "might" throw spurs on other frequencies such as in the land mobile band, interfering with other services. I have a pair of UV5X's, the purchase of which was inspired by one of Randy's videos. They look identical to the UV5R, but transmit only on GMRS frequencies. I believe they receive 450-470 MHz but if they do, I have not tried that out.

    I would disagree with the difficulty of TX on the UV-5R to hit a repeater. Once I watched your other video on using a repeater on GMRS, it took me about 5 rushed minutes to set the UV-5R up to successfully hit the nearest repeater. I’m convinced there simply is no more cost efficient radio out there. This is not to say I don’t love my BTech GMRS-V2 and my UV-9RG (which won’t transmit on 462.550, despite that supposedly being within its TX range).

      A GMRS license covers you and your entire immediate family, excluding cousins. This is for use of an approved GMRS radio, which the UV-5R is not. The UV-5G would however be valid for use with a GMRS license.

    • @itsapittie
      @itsapittie 2 роки тому +2

      By the strict construction of FCC regulations (not law) you are not allowed to use the UV5R on GMRS frequencies even if you have a GMRS license. However, if you have a GMRS license and you follow the rules for GMRS operation, the probability that the FCC or anyone else will even know what radio you are using is essentially zero. It's true that Ham clubs have sometimes engaged in operations to hunt someone down for breaking rules but for something as inconsequential as using the "wrong" radio they won't waste their time and the FCC has never punished someone for that anyway. If you use the UV5R on GMRS, MURS, or even FRS frequencies, don't be a jerk or draw negative attention to yourself and nobody will ever know. If you engage in dickish or disruptive behavior that brings you to the attention of the FCC they might throw that charge into the pot when they slam you for other stuff but they have better things to do than try to find out what radio you're using.

    Have you considered getting a Baofeng BF-H7? I've heard from other reviewers on UA-cam that it actually outputs 10 watts on HIGH. It's only available from China on a very slow boat. Since I'm a very stylish person, except when I'm not, I got the black and orange model, which goes very well with my black and orange Appree mics. The biggest problem is that the radios are $46/each, and the batteries are $35. But I love the H7.

    I have a UV-5R and a KG-805G (real GMRS radio) and I have a GMRS FCC License. What I don't have are voice contacts. I seem to be in a dead zone? When I scan I do get hits but no voice and I am at a loss to understand why?

  • @ijsaenz

    Two questions.
    Are any older UV-5R radios still on the market? More importantly, where is your affiliate link?

    Ok. Guess I’m a moron. Question: can you set up a gmrs repeater to hit another gmrs repeater? Still learning here.

    • @Texas1FlyBoy
      @Texas1FlyBoy 3 роки тому +2

      Why? Channels used by repeaters use standard 5MHz spacing with assigned input and output channels. Using one repeater to hit another could cause a feedback loop UNLESS they were configured with non-standard frequencies (channels). To "link" repeaters (i.e. to extend range), an internet connection is normally used.

    • @personalradiofun526
      @personalradiofun526 3 роки тому

      Amateur's do this all the time but they have to mix VHF and UHF frequencies. The GMRS rules make it impossible to link repeaters using GMRS frequencies.

    So how close does a GMRS repeater need to be to access with a GMRS handheld and mobile units?

    • @TheNotaRubicon

      It depends on the repeater and the location, but I can access a GMRS repeater that is 69 miles away, from my couch using my KG-905G GMRS handheld..

    Q, on a UV5R radio transmitting on GMRS channels, does the antenna that is stock with the radio make a big difference?

    • @TheNotaRubicon
      @TheNotaRubicon  3 роки тому

      The antennas on my (older) UV-5Rs are not well-tuned for GMRS, so they are not the best.

Programmed it with CHIRP using the UV-5R as a pick in the software. The S9 wasn't in the list. It must be based off of the 5R.. I guess.. because it worked!

    New to this topic, so please excuse my ignorance, but I just got a UV-5R and it says GMRS1 when I turn it on and there's a sticker inside the battery well that says GMRS. Is this a new UV-5R that is GMRS or is this just indicating the radio can listen to GMRS? 🤔 I'm assuming the latter, but I haven't gotten through all of your videos yet and I'm completely ignorant on this topic as yet. Thanks

    • @TheNotaRubicon
      @TheNotaRubicon  Рік тому +2

      A "UV-5R" is a ham radio - so according to the FCC rules, it can receive GMRS (and many other) channels & frequencies - but a UV-5R (any 'ham' radio) is not permitted to transmit on GMRS channels.
      "GMRS1" is most likely a pre-programmed channel on the radio. It may or may not allow you to transmit on that channel because the Chicoms dont care much about the FCC rules.
