Panorama was a great album...a benchmark definitely for this band. They were on the way up. Genius lyrics....great musicians. This is one of the few songs that didn't feature Ben. Love these guys then and now. RIP Ben.
BITD when I was coming up in The IE, stations like KOLA 99.9 still existed, playing this song, followed by something like "And The Cradle Will Rock", then "Crazy Train" or something by The Police. Every new Stones track aired fresh. The Kinks, April Wine, ZZ Top, The Who, Clapton, Zevon, The Doors, Billy Idol, Chilliwack and Loverboy, a good chunk of Tony Carey's output, 38 Special, Molly Hatchet, AND Mike + The Mechanics. Can you believe, Madness, INXS, Men At Work and Eddy Grant? It really happened, AND you could cop a stellar mixtape since the DJ NEVER talked over the songs! Yes. Happened. RIP, ca. 1987. A mini-KMET if you will
The Cars will live on forever in my book. Devo was formed in '73 and The Cars in '76. I just (personally) don't feel like Rick was trying to copy them. He wrote some very strange, different shit lol I still listen to them almost daily to lighten my mood :o)
I agree, one of their best! Along with Daavid Bowie, Devo, Gorgio Meroder, Kraftwerk and gary Numan were the forefront of modern rock or what they were calling it back in 79, New Wave. So so inovative!
i want to shake like Liguardia magic mouth in the sun train ride to the courtyard before you can run down at the end of lonely street where no one takes a walk someone's lying at your feet and someone's getting off [Chorus:] just gimme some slack the seven floors of walkup the odor musted cracks the peeping keyhole introverts with the monkeys on their backs [Chorus] the rooftops strung with frauleins the pastel pinned up sails the eighteen color roses against your face so pale [Chorus] i want to float like Euripides all visions intact i'm alright with Fellini fiends tripping over the track (chorus) down at the end of Lonely Street where no one takes a chance someone's in the cheap light and someone wants to dance
It's been a while, but I read somewhere that the members of DEVO were friends with The Cars (many grew up in Ohio at the same time), and they all shared an inside joke about "slack" and what it really meant to them. Anyway, I'm sure Greg Hawkes had many discussions with them about synthesizers and keyboard sounds they all were experimenting with at the time. Each band was inspired by the other, no doubt.
I love how David Robinson's hair gets going during the drum fills. Great Cars song!!
He had the best hair during this timeframe! 😂
My favorite Cars song - what a jammer
I love that Benjamin is matching Greg's shirt (with opposing colors) and Ric's guitar strap.
I love his white shoes!!

They just remixed it with extra tracks.. The Cars are one of the great bands fromthe 80's. Ric did some nice solo stuff too.
The Cars are one of those bands that people often overlook
Mr. Gorgeous chestnut hair in the back. He doesn't even have to sing....just love to watch him play. =)
Yep! That’s enough for me!
It is a shame this song never got on their greatest hits albums. This one is the stand out tune in my opinion.
dressshoeguy this song is on their 2 cd greatest hits released in 1995
Completely agree, bro
I agree. Their best and certainly my favorite Cars album. Groundbreaking and ahead of it's time. After this one they went for a more commercial sound.

Rick was a master of abstract lyrics. One of my favorite groups for sure and this is one of their criminally overlooked songs.

i want to shake like Liguardia
magic mouth in the sun
train ride to the courtyard
before you can run
down at the end of lonely street
where no one takes a walk
someone's lying at your feet
and someone's getting off
[Chorus:]
just gimme some slack
the seven floors of walkup
the odor musted cracks
the peeping keyhole introverts
with the monkeys on their backs
[Chorus]
the rooftops strung with frauleins
the pastel pinned up sails
the eighteen color roses
against your face so pale
[Chorus]
i want to float like Euripides
all visions intact
i'm alright with Fellini fiends
tripping over the track
(chorus)
down at the end of Lonely Street
where no one takes a chance
someone's in the cheap light
and someone wants to dance
Gotta love Greg with his bowl haircut Bless him lol
Elliot's is pretty "bowl-ish" as well.
I love Greg to bits, but I've seen better styles on him
Desde Ecuador. Uno de los mejores temas de este gran grupo The Cars. Larga vida al NEW WAYS MUSIC 80’s
Great tune!
the record company said we need to sell more albums. Done said.
Their best song from their best album.
don't forget how Sexy Rick is and the drummer is to and then there's Ben yes!!
Never realize Elliot is so skinny. Rocking those skinny jeans .
Christ the keyboardist is far skinnier he could snap an arm playing
love the Car's!! awesome group!!
I 2got about this song. I always enjoyed it. So Cars. To my ears it's just as good as anything else they've done
@ RedneckFordToyota.... I am in agreement with you. This is my favorite CARS Album. Was the essence of "Techno" which was totally Bitchen ...
Great edit

RIP Rick O.
Lord what a band. Before contaminated by Mutt.
🌹🌹🌹🌹🙏😭😭😭
Buddy Holly + Lou Reed = Ric Ocasek
Nice pull! I agree
I feel like this was an attempt by The Cars to do a copy of a Devo song.
+Wm Joseph More like a Stones song.....but nonetheless a good tune

I definitely hear some essence of Devo in this
3 people wont give no slack
The main keyboards parts remind me of a song from Genesis...mmmmm
Greg and Elliot had the same haircut, lol
Was this the only time they played this song?
