Love the tapping technique being used by EE. Of course, I was fortunate to see EVH do it live in 1980. Even though a big fan of The Cars, I never got to see them in concert. Great guitarist in a really great band. RIP Ben and Ric.
Elliot had an amazing solo in "Take What You Want" from the Musikladen concert. At least 2 minute solo where he worked some magic. I was hooked before that but dayum. Also Greg gets a guitar and jams with Elliot as well! LOL I love how Greg is so quirky. And they performed hungover too. David Robinson doesn't even remember it.
I've always loved Elliot's solo on this track. All of his solos are terrific. Eddie Van Halen was a master tapper. The earliest tapping I've seen is from Steve Hackett in Genesis in the early 70s.
@@CraigHollabaugh And they sounded so good even people who didn't like new wave still played their albums. Really really loud. I think the first time I heard their first album was on Cerwin Vegas at a party.
Awesome song from an amazing band, The Cars had terrific albums and performed even better live. Thank you, The Midnight Special for keeping this treasure.
The Midnight Special, once again you did!!! Thank you sooo much for keep uploading more performances by The Cars!!! At this point, I don't know how many performances of theirs are missing but please keep uploading more of The Cars!!! And thank you very much!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Ric Ocasek, at one time, wanted to be an HVAC installer. But he was so cool that, when he put in the air conditioning, the pipes kept freezing. So he had to become a rock star instead.
One of my favorites by this innovative and awesome band who were still a pretty relatively fresh band in 1979. Interesting that Rick and Elliot are both using Dean guitars too.
The Midnight Special, was the place to be to watch the best rock bands. It was worth staying up for on Saturday nights. I miss these times most definitely.
Not many could pull off wearing red boots on stage but Ben Orr did and looked cool AF, lol I got the see The Cars in Denver in the summer of 79 with about 3 other bands and they were the top for me. Honestly i don't even remember the other bands, i was pretty high at the time, but i think Heart was in there, ha.
I saw The Cars first and second tours and the one thing that does not transfer over well on any of the videos I have seen is how powerful they are live. Saw them in Louisville on the Candy-O tour just to see how Elliott was playing that riff in this song (no UA-cam then, heh).
The interesting thing is to observe the evolution of the audience throughout the 70s. At first, most of the time, the public was very shy and in 1979 the public was already participating more.
I don't remember this song from the VH-1 broadcast. This is the one they left out, I think. He had that Eddie Van Halen tapping thing going on in that.
This is very close to the track on Candy-o. Ric would change up the lyrics as Long Blonde Hair, Curly Hair, Long Black Hair in different live versions like Musikladen.
@@Bonnev-jt8hl no interaction with the audience not even an acknowledgement went home shit I just traveled 60 miles for this I could of stayed home and listened to the album
Most musicians look like douchebags when they wear sunglasses on stage. There are a few notable exceptions. Ric Ocasek is one such exception. There’s something unpretentious about him and the few who pull it off.
Elliot is insane! That’s a performance all right. Holy Moly. Sounds exactly like the studio too, never a note off.
Gritty live version. Wow they knew how to pull off a live version of a lot of their songs!
that guitar riff still gives me chills _45 years later_

EE was doing this in late 70’s. Seen them on three different tours and they never disappointed me. I got to say though that clapping is annoying.

If you like tapping check out Stanley Jordan.
EE is one of my favorite guitarists. He is a so underrated.
Ric has brushed his rockn'roll hair very well. 😎
One of those times where I watch a performance and wish I would have been a musician. That looks like a lot of fun.
They sounded exactly the same live. Great band
My favorite Cars song! Dedicate this one to my (late) homie Troy C who turned me onto "Candy-O"!
Mine, too. Didn't get a lot of play, though.
For new wave music, they were a defining band.
Definitely a crossover, the Cars lead people to the Talking Heads then onto the Clash and eventually the Sex Pistols.
@@CraigHollabaugh And they sounded so good even people who didn't like new wave still played their albums. Really really loud. I think the first time I heard their first album was on Cerwin Vegas at a party.

This is one of my favorites from "Candy-O." It's a perfect blend of edgy rock and new wave experimental. Great band.
Dangerous Type was also fantastic!
You know that a band is super talented when you can watch just their live performances...The Cars never missed a beat.
I know when I first started listening to the Cars when I was 10 that MUSIC WOULD NEVER GET BETTER THAN THIS
Eyes wide open when you start to fall…fall 🎶
Forty four years later, where does time fly. Man, I miss this time frame in my life.
I'm with you, Brother. I'm with you.
Me too! They were some good times!

I believe the keyboardist is an unsung hero.
@@parasite674 Greg Hawks is my hero.
Candy-O was an incredible sophomore album. All killer, no filler including this song.
Best Cars album!!!
Ric with some of his coolest lyrics, & the band just playing perfect. The Cars had a lot of PERFET moments & this performance is one of them. 😊
They had em bouncing with that tune. I always thought Nightspots was the 2nd strongest song on Candy-O. Dangerous Type being #1

Only 2 more and they are from this 1979 show: Candy-O and Dangerous Type. :-)
@@ConteL62 Thanks 👍🏻
Such a great track, so much energy and so many sounds from every corner. Must have always been a blast to perform.
One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands! This is so Cars!! 🚗 Quirky Ric . Ben’s , swoon, Boots. ❤❤
I saw that at the Alladin in Vegas back in '82. We were about 8 rows from the stage. The band was awesome.
Ric Ocasek, at one time, wanted to be an HVAC installer. But he was so cool that, when he put in the air conditioning, the pipes kept freezing. So he had to become a rock star instead.
Candy-O is such a great album. All the songs flow smoothly. Not a bad song in the mix.
Their best album
Just entered high school when the Cars were just ramping up. They were the talk of time for all of us at school. Miss these guys!!
Awesomely cool!!😎 I saw a few people doing the Pogo in the audience. Haha, what a fun show that had to be! The camera angles were🔥🔥💜
Just awesome. I fell in love with them on their first album and this one just blew me away.
I've never heard this until about a week ago. It's become one of my favorites from the Cars
One of my favorites by this innovative and awesome band who were still a pretty relatively fresh band in 1979. Interesting that Rick and Elliot are both using Dean guitars too.
Elliot was an early Dean endorser. Ric bought his in a shop, Elliot had lefties made for him. Ben played a Dean bass sometimes.
Watching their spots from the show, that crowd is so into them. Very energetic!
Has Greg got SHADES on???!!! Jeez, COOL! 🎹😎💘
The Cars in their prime. Marshalls and Dean guitars full blast.
The Midnight Special, was the place to be to watch the best rock bands. It was worth staying up for on Saturday nights. I miss these times most definitely.
What a song & performance! Showcases their talent and coolness brilliantly! Would love a time machine to go back to that moment!
My favorite band ever! Performing one of my favorite songs! Nightspots! I can so relate to this song in that era!!!
This is "Core" Cars....the original stuff (with Roy Thomas Baker) that made them Rock Stars (or rather New Wave Stars) !!!
Notice the dude up front doing the Pogo😂❤
I was 12 then !! I still think they look so cool !!!
I was 13.

My fav. Car song, rocks hard.

Eddie Van Halen saw the video at 1:30 and said, “That’s cool. I think I’ll steal it.”
UTTERLY FANTASTIC 💥
Elliots tapping
Ben’s butt
Rick’s adams apple
It’s impossible to hate The Cars
And all of their heel boots!!
I LOVE THEM!! 🥰
I think Ric should have named his Adams apple. I mean, after all, it was part of the band. So prominent and upfront.
Everything about Benjamin is amazing!
Ben’s arms too! And chest. Getting hot in here 🔥
The first Friday Night, of my first week, in college.
The Cars!!!

Haha, that's so true!
Yes the late sixties were still watching but in the seventies we broke out! Smoking weed on the bridge on 2nd street between classes at GBN lol
This was the first song recorded for the Candy- O album.
Siii más más de The Cars🤩🤩 gracias !!🫂 sigan subiendo por favor

I don't remember this song from the VH-1 broadcast. This is the one they left out, I think. He had that Eddie Van Halen tapping thing going on in that.
I don't remember this particular song, per se. Parts sound familiar though. The whole thing was cool, though.

It’s so clear that the Cars (esp Ric and Ben) had paid their dues before they “hit”. They’re as tight as a gnat’s arse!
Same them this tour. With the exception of Elliott Easton it was one of the most emotionless shows I ever saw
really? Not good?
My experience was the same. Kind of a dull but well performed show.
@@Bonnev-jt8hl no interaction with the audience not even an acknowledgement went home shit I just traveled 60 miles for this I could of stayed home and listened to the album
Yup, never was impressed with the cars in concerts. This was however fantastic.
Someone’s guitar was turned up too high. The thing that made this song great on vinyl was the balance between the keys and guitar.
First!

Everybody started tapping after Van Halen. It was a joke. Still an awesome song, though. (:
Steve Hackett from Genesis was tapping in the early 70’s before EVH
Roy Clark was doing it in the 60s. (:
Cocaine much??
