Clicked on this video and was surprised to see how young Rob looks! This is an older video but a good one
C ants also love making satelite nests in foam insulation. In fact, I believe they prefer it to wet wood since its so easy to hollow out.
I literally just watched a video of a guy vaccuuming up a whole colony from insulation boards in his barn loft. I think the smell of the boards protects them and the larvae.
I think ours are coming from the foundation seal plate as are many others. The foundation sweats with temperature changes and rots the wood if its not isolated from moisture properly. Sucks you got to pay for other people's short cuts and mistakes. Do it right the first time and avoid the crap but to be fair building code was not that good for many years and has gotten way better as of recent. Like our crawl space is vented when nowadays they say you should seal it
Well done. Great information!
After trying so many ant baits with little success I bought some fipronil, specifically Taurus SC. I have been ant free since 10-16-14
What is it, and where do you buy it? Are you still ant free?
+Lulujoy Find it at amazon and yes, still ant free. The bottle I bought makes 25 gallons. Sprayed the sides of my house all tree trunks only used 3 gallons. Now I use it once or twice a year, it kills roaches too.
+mic roneus Thanks. Did you have ants on your lawn also? I have a lot of ant hills. Did you spray that? I thought of using Diatomaceous Earth on the lawn and planting mint around my house.
+Lulujoy My next door neighbor had ants on her driveway and the sidewalk in front of her house, but the ant hills were in her lawn. I sprayed the driveway and sidewalk. A day or so later both were covered with dead ants. Taurus SC comes with instructions, easy to follow. I used a 1 gallon plastic sprayer. I used 0.8 oz per gallon of water. Once applied it does need about 3hrs to dry. Once dried it keeps killing for months. Cost me about $55 for both and still using it. Pest control man wanted $125 just to treat one tree.
+Lulujoy Forgot to mention, when I asked the pest control guy, he said he was going to use Fipronil. That's why I bought it. You can try diatomaceous earth and mint but this stuff works great and you won't spend all the time I spent trying different things to take care of the problem. The brand I mentioned is Taurus SC, there are other brands, this seemed to be the least expensive. And no, I don't work for them or have any financial interest.
Used the terro bait and they seemed to take it for awhile like flies on shit and now a few days later they are just wondering around the room in all directions not taking the bait.
Not helpful and some misinformation. True carpenter ants don't eat your 2x4's BUT their larvae do. The "satellite" colony in your house is really the nursury - the true colony lives elsewhere and you need to find that to "fix" the problem in the long run. You have to find the trail where they are getting in - the colony is outside somewhere (I found ours at the base of an oak tree about 20 ft from the foundation). Carpenter ants place their larvae in fresh wood (your framing) for them to eat - the mature ants don't eat your house. The easiest way I found to find their trail is to go out after dark on a warm summer night with a flashlight and check the entire foundation. If you find the trail walk it back to their nest. Next day really go after the colony - dig up, spray, dust whatever - and plug the holes. Then go to your foundation and spray up under the siding as much as you can reach without tearing up your 2x4's. The larvae will die without tending by the adults.
Best explanation I've read yet. I've seen 5 videos on this topic already. Thank you.
they also build satellite colonies in rigid foam insulation.
baits do not work well vs Carpenter Ants (advice from a professional )
+no name what does?
Remove the infested wood if you can.
If not possible, then finding the nest (hard part) and treating it with ULV110 aerosol to drive them out and hopefully kill the nest works well...If nest area exposed use Dragnet to kill and create a barrier of protection. Often a dust can be very useful if ULV110 is impractical. Dusts in voids or where the nest is in cracks/crevices can be very effective. This multi pronged approach is best.
Baits have a low percentage success on CA.
Baits do not work generally because CA's dietary requirements vary beyond the perimeters of the bait.
Good info thx
what do i do now that the carpenter ants have eaten through my baseboards inside my house? tear the baseboard out and spray inside now? they got through window from ouside.
Inquisitve m I'd call a professional and follow their recommendations - sounds like a massive infestation
it's actualy one baseboard, but yeah, i will check with a pro.
Inquisitve m update?
Thanks
Many thx
They can cause alot of damage!
Boric acid and suger is the best I've seen.
Shane Redmond Shane that combo is an excellent one.
+Shane Redmond That is not only an effective combination but also fairly safe for the yard and home.
A Concord Carpenter / ToolBoxBuzz I bought Terri which is boric acid and sugar but it isn't working
