One of the most revealing things Young said regarding Trey was, "he will never be an elite thrower of the football." Yet they gave up a treasure trove of drafts picks to move up and select him. That indicates it was simply a very poor draft move. Other teams have tried moves like this in the past where they spend very high draft picks on perceived talent or potential and the truth is such "grabs" rarely if ever work out. I remember when the NY Giants pulled such a move a number of years ago when with the #9 pick in round 1 they selected a complete project tackle named Eric Flowers out of Florida. Guy was an absolute disaster from day one, and many other teams have similar stories of drafting projects high in the draft when they should be drafting players, who at least proved themselves in college. I think the Niners mistake was they saw a guy with pretty good arm strength and size and thought they were getting a mini version of Josh Allen. Difference is, Allen had proven himself at Wyoming and was actually a far more accurate passer than most gave him credit for. Both his junior and senior years at Wyoming his receivers lead the NCAA in dropped ball % at 13% and 14%, which most certainly helped bring down his completion percentage and gave him the false appearance of not being that accurate. And I'm not sure I agree with Steve regarding Trey's ability to process info quickly or accurately. I think he is saying that more because he is friends with Kyle and does not want to stir the pot. Deep down I suspect Steve really thinks this guy is not near NFL QB material where he is right now and may never be.

Young never had a solid running game to protect him in the post season. Ricky was ok but wasn't Emmitt. Plus he was getting pressured most of the game by the cowboy's D line. The one post season he had a solid back to relieve the pressure Hurst went down on his ankles. Wish Young would've won more Superbowls.

Steve Young is a legend to the 49ers back in the day. No one will be as good as Steve Young who also played Quarterback at my High School in the late 70's Greenwich Cardinals CT. I was a Junior at the same high school he went too when they beat the Chargers bad in the Super Bowl. 🏈🏟🏆
Trey deserves a shot to get reps somewhere but also like Steve said he has to be careful how he treats this situation because most likely you're going somewhere you're going to sit regardless unless someone gets hurt. It's too late to go somewhere else and be the starter so he'll be sitting the bench once again and he'll have to learn a whole new system. With the Niners luck having him as security isn't the worst but paying him that much to sit the bench would kinda suck. All in all I say keep him, continue to develop him, teams may inquire mid season if things don't work with their QBs and if Darnold is as good as they think he is then maybe you could include Trey in a packaged deal. I could see Trey going to the Vikings or Lions and becoming a solid #2 option where the torch will get passed eventually.....Bucs look like they may need a QB as well so I think that's realistic too.
Young hit the nail I. The head...they should not trade lance because I do believe all this pressure of winning now is not how he is wired,it how Purdy thrives but not lance,and once the whole pressure of being the 3rd pick is off his shoulders I do believe trey will thrive and reach his full potential.

I think if he's not traded for a bunch of picks, he ends up being the back up by week 6. If purdy goes down they might sub in darnold for a game or two but I think they'd give tret his chance. They have him on a good contract for another 3 years and he's 23. At worst he's the best 3rd string qb in the league for 3 years and plays Like 6 games then hits free agency and the Niners will end up getting a comp 3 for him. Just keep him around until someone offers at least a 1+2nd. If Carson wentz can net a 1st 3, Watson a 3 1st and darnold a 2,4,6 lance will net a 1+2

Kind of an illogical thing to say. When you look at which teams allowed the most sacks on their qb last year, Niners aren't even in the top 10. The 49ers were 6th in the league for fewest sacks allowed. They had a string of bad luck with injuries in combination with McGlinchey, who was partially to blame for both Jimmy G's and Purdy's injuries. McGlinchey signed with the Broncos, so he's not there anymore. Great run blocker, not so great at protecting the QB.

Kyle isn't a good coach, he's a good offensive coordinator. I kinda wish Trey got a coach like Jim Harbaugh coming out of college, Jim would have made him believe he's the most talented player in the league like he did with Kap. Instead, he got the douchey indifference of Kyle Shanahan who doesn't ever coach, won't even kick players out of practice when they fight... The honeymoon with Kyle is over for me. A QB is only as good as the system that he’s in and Lance is not a Shanahan system guy. It’s a lot of complicated formations and motions. Lots of short slants and outs. It requires a QB that can process information fast and that’s not Lance. He could be that in the future but for now, that’s not him.

I still remember that 92 championship game Dallas won 30-24 and after watching Young play terrible, throwing picks and fumbling all over the place with a healthy Joe Montana sitting on the sideline, I was pulling my hair out. Why Seifert started Young over a 4 time SB champ I'll never know. To be fair though in 94 the Niners caused those Dallas turnovers, 2 caused by Eric Davis, and at the end of the half they left Larry Brown alone on Jerry Rice cause he basically shut Rice the year before in the 93 championship game in Dallas, Rice just played better in 94.
Always felt in keeping Trey! This is the best place for him to develop. No pressure on him now that he is 3rd on the list. It’s all up to him know to develop.

Steve Young is a legend to the 49ers back in the day. No one will be as good as Steve Young who also played Quarterback at my High School in the late 70's Greenwich Cardinals CT. I was a Junior at the same high school he went too when they beat the Chargers bad in the Super Bowl. 🏈🏟🏆
Trey deserves a shot to get reps somewhere but also like Steve said he has to be careful how he treats this situation because most likely you're going somewhere you're going to sit regardless unless someone gets hurt. It's too late to go somewhere else and be the starter so he'll be sitting the bench once again and he'll have to learn a whole new system. With the Niners luck having him as security isn't the worst but paying him that much to sit the bench would kinda suck. All in all I say keep him, continue to develop him, teams may inquire mid season if things don't work with their QBs and if Darnold is as good as they think he is then maybe you could include Trey in a packaged deal. I could see Trey going to the Vikings or Lions and becoming a solid #2 option where the torch will get passed eventually.....Bucs look like they may need a QB as well so I think that's realistic too.

I think if he's not traded for a bunch of picks, he ends up being the back up by week 6. If purdy goes down they might sub in darnold for a game or two but I think they'd give tret his chance. They have him on a good contract for another 3 years and he's 23. At worst he's the best 3rd string qb in the league for 3 years and plays Like 6 games then hits free agency and the Niners will end up getting a comp 3 for him. Just keep him around until someone offers at least a 1+2nd. If Carson wentz can net a 1st 3, Watson a 3 1st and darnold a 2,4,6 lance will net a 1+2

Keep Lance he is on a rookie contract and you won’t get anything close to what you gave to get him. If he is committed to being the best he can be put him on the practice squad where he goes up against the def he will get plenty of reps and get better he is young and he needs to get as many reps as possible

Kind of an illogical thing to say. When you look at which teams allowed the most sacks on their qb last year, Niners aren't even in the top 10. The 49ers were 6th in the league for fewest sacks allowed. They had a string of bad luck with injuries in combination with McGlinchey, who was partially to blame for both Jimmy G's and Purdy's injuries. McGlinchey signed with the Broncos, so he's not there anymore. Great run blocker, not so great at protecting the QB.

If you watch these two clips, the first from last year...you can see Garoppolo in the foreground...and this year, Trey Lance has clearly tweaked his motion. Trey by all accounts play just as good as Sam in camps and when you take away his first couple of drives (kid's a historical slow starter in games) played just as well in games. To shatter his confidence and value like this, when its' supposed to be a competition two days before a game, and before camp is even over is dumb as shit. Kyle isn't a good coach, he's a good offensive coordinator. I kinda wish Trey got a coach like Jim Harbaugh coming out of college, Jim would have made him believe he's the most talented player in the league like he did with Kap. Instead, he got the douchey indifference of Kyle Shanahan who doesn't ever coach, won't even kick players out of practice when they fight... The honeymoon with Kyle is over for me. I know he's had some success, but he's also has some failures just as big, and this whole Trey situation is as big of a failure as it can get. It's on the level of blowing two big leads in the super bowl. The only reason I wouldn't want to see him fired is the track record of the York family when it comes to coaching hires. A QB is only as good as the system that he’s in and Lance is not a Shanahan system guy. It’s a lot of complicated formations and motions. Lots of short slants and outs. It requires a QB that can process information fast and that’s not Lance. He could be that in the future but for now, that’s not him.
