I’d have pulled that brush unit parallel to the opening in the fence for easier line placement. Nice video.

In Australia we would have just cut the fence and drove on in

Lots of East coast departments don’t have wild land gear like out on the west coast

I’m not sure what the urgency of this call was. As a career firefighter with 33 years on the job when you arrived on scene it looks to me there was just piles of brush burning and no running fire line. It also looks like there was a road directly in front of the truck through that little patch of trees and to the right of the truck there was a plowed field or maybe very low cut straw and where the truck sets same thing and maybe even a plowed field, not sure what was to the left. Overall good job and nice video.

And just how in the hell did the responding company know that. Anyone with 33 years of service should know that you don’t have a clue what awaits you once you get on scene.

@@Biggestfoot10209 Well genius, it’s called a SIZE UP. Watch the video. There were units already on scene that should have given a SIZE UP when they arrived. Fire ground size up is crucial not only responding to incidents involving structures, but also vehicle accidents and brush fires and really any incident that requires ANY public safety resource. For that incident, the first arriving unit should have relayed they had a pile of brush on fire approximately ( length x width) not endangering any structures, boarded by a road and a cut field not running. Any time an emergency vehicle is responding to an incident there is an INCREASED risk of an accident. Statistics from the National Safety Council found that that almost 200 people DIED in crashes involving EMERGENCY VEHICLES in 2021. Several factors contribute to emergency vehicles accidents, including emergency vehicle driver training, RESPONSE PROTOCOLS and PROCEDURES, traffic and road conditions, and public awareness and education. EVERYONE wants to drive the big red fire truck but don’t realize there is a HUGE responsibility that goes with it? Just like EVERYONE wants to wear the WHITE HAT ( officer) but do they fully understand the responsibility that goes with it? As an officer or a driver if you make one bad decision and someone gets hurt you better be able to back your decision with CERTIFICATIONS. A certificate of understanding isn’t a CERTIFICATION. In today’s world you better have Pro Board Certifications for your “ decision making “. An attorney will eat you up without it. Stay safe friend remember give a SIZE UP, slow down responding apparatus if necessary and cancel apparatus if not needed.

@Biggestfoot10209 Call me a fool, and in this case, I would rather be the fool than any man's jackass. Now sonny I'm not sure, but I would swear that those there fields yonder look like farm land. I would like to think from my understanding economics there is almost nothing more detrimental than fire in a farmers crops. I noticed as they pulled in there were Silos on the right side. Yes, I know it appeared to be a waste of man power. The men on scene appeared to be a brush unit. I am guessing, but the truck we rode with was nothing more than a pump truck. The Western States and much of the Midwest are in a drought. They overreact to a cigarette 1 ember could be 10000 acres lost. You are absolutely correct, that a 360 is done by the first unit. Active fire assignment can shrink if not needed.

@@craigroberson8757 Happy New Year. Well you’re not a fool but looks like maybe a jackass. You are correct, that was a farm and you definitely saw silos. If you know anything about farming you would have noticed that the filled they drove through was GREEN and the brown stuff was corn ALREADY HARVESTED. The BROWN was DIRT that was plowed and turned over for next years planting. Now pay attention I’m going to teach you something. DIRT DONT BURN, the brown stuff was dirt that was plowed in preparation for next spring planting . The GREEN was grass from were he didn’t plant this year but probably last year. They alternate their food plots so they don’t deplete the nutrients in the soil. This video looks like it was made in the early fall AFTER the crops were harvested. If you look closely and don’t get caught up in WHACKER LAND it looks like someone was clearing some tress and brush and put it in a pile to BURN. Maybe just maybe the fire was beginning run ( spread ) ever so slightly and they called to help control it. There wasn’t even any real active fire just some smoldering and small pockets. The biggest thing to remember is the driver of the apparatus responding to ANY emergency is responsible for using caution when responding. Everyone want to be an Officer but they don’t understand the responsibility of the position. LAWYERS LOVE to sue fire departments and firefighters for BAD DECISIONS. Maybe you should take a class in LEGAL CONCEPTS OF FIREFIGHTING. Me saying that they should have responded NON-EMERGENCY is based on. There was already units in scene. The fire was not running and was contained to an area where it would have been slow to spread if it even could have spread. SCENE SIZE UP is essential in firefighting. Knowing what resources you need and the urgency you need them to respond is crucial for the SAFETY for EVERYONE. How would you like one of your family members to get hurt or even killed by a responding piece of apparatus who is not an essential part of the operation. Statistics show that when the RED LIGHTS get turned on and the SIREN begins to scream the RIGHT FOOT pushes the skinny pedal harder and the apparatus goes faster. In my department ( career firefighters) we DO NOT RESPOND in residential areas faster than 30 MPH and within the city limits the same rule applies. Studies show that WHEN RESPONDING EMERGENCY that you only get on scene on the average of 30 seconds faster. Most emergency vehicle accidents occur at intersections. When responding to emergencies EVERY DRIVEWAY should be considered an INTERSECTION. COMMON SENSE is a MUST and GOOD JUDGEMENT should always be used and know what apparatus and resources you have responding to every incident.

most places use the box-alarm system to call for a fire- for example, the tone 5-2- 5-2 would mean station 52 was activated...
look for that video & you'll see what I'm talking about...
level-wise, the simple ones range from numbers 1-4 (depending on size and how fast it's spreading) - if it's a big one, then a 5th-alarm will be ordered
