      same here, was nervous to watch this and find out lmaoo, i think people should read whatever sure, but also just doesn't sit right the way this book is praised and rated AND on top of that the author is extremely promilitary and has said some terrible things about palestine ... yeah just icky imo

    I think the biggest sign of the weak worldbuilding in this book is Violet's armor. It's made of dragon scales that have been shrunk down. It seems to work amazingly; it's easy for her to move around in and it's almost impenetrable. This should've *revolutionized* the dragon riders' combat equipment. That rider who can shrink stuff should be set to work churning the miniature dragon scales out so all the riders could have a set. But no. It's just a thing to make Violet more special-er than she already is.

    What I’ve found is so many people that have not read romantasy are eating this up because it’s their first exposure and the book is “easy to understand” (no real world building, light politics, many stereotypical fantasy tropes, etc). Feels very intro to romantasy 101 and not impressive if you do read that genre regularly.

  • @abookishmess
    @abookishmess 9 місяців тому +35

    There's so many nitpicks that I have for this book.
    1. I don't understand why the mom wanted her to be a dragon rider but didn't prep her better ???
    2. I don't know why we had to be so obvious and constant about her attraction to xaden it's kind of cringe to constantly hear how hot someone is to another person.
    3. Hate the male best friend trend that I've been seeing, and I'm mad because he was right. Violet would have and should have died so many times but plot be armoring her so badly. I feel that he didn't add anything as a love interest in the story. I wish he was genuinely a good friend to her that had different beliefs (in believing in the academy and the government) that is a more compelling and relatable conflict. Sometimes your best friend opinions or beliefs don't align with your own. Noooooo we got another shitty love triangle that did NOTHING.
    4. This book is awful about setting up situations and paying them off later. There's no breadcrumbs that feels like a trail through the plot shit just happens constantly and I hate it. There's no build up no tension nothing. It's annoying because the author acts as if she put energy into her story development. I never once got sad for these characters or circumstances. For example the romance is non-existent and you can't convince me otherwise Xaden just loves her out of nowhere..

    27:36 IDK to me, this feels like peoples first foray into “Fantasy” outside of Sarah J Mass. I know a lot of people who were solely Romance readers, who read this and then went on to read other Romantasy/Fantasy books after it. I do wonder if as people read more Fantasy, if they will like this as much, and considering everyone I know who loved the first one didn’t love the second one, that may already be happening.

    • @gracesull78756
      @gracesull78756 9 місяців тому

      to be fair i haven't read it but even after just reading so many reviews, i am staying far far away. i'm not the most well read fantasy reader technically, but have read a decent amount as it's my favorite genre and i've started to explore more of the authors considered to be the greats. it def seems like its a first time fantasy read or for the romantasy fans, but i'm of the opinion that only a minority of sci-fi/fantasy readers would enjoy it, or at least most wouldn't be so diehard obsessed and think its the best book ever. idk, again haven't read it, but even the subjective descriptions of the plot and worldbuilding alone without taking opinion into account is enough for me to know it wouldn't hold a candle to my reads from this year.
      i'm also curious to see how this goes given the reaction to the second book, because this really reminds me of from blood and ash. the wildly fast turnaround times publishing them, planned 5 book series, getting longer and longer but also kinda drags bc of the filler and repetition, half baked worldbuilding and plot twists just for shock. ik people loveddd those for a while and it was all the rage, but the fourth wing hype reminded me that those like drastically dropped off by the time the fourth came out as fans lost interest. ngl wondering if this might mirror that, both feel very "fast publishing", and good or not these authors kinda do themselves a disservice pumping them out like this and if they were more intentionally crafted maybe it'd make a big difference

And mind you, Im normally a slut for Romantasy, so I kept trying for like a whole month to finish it, but I finally gave up and returned it to audible!! That’s how bad it was!! Also, the chronic illness rep in this book was god awful. The fact that the “solution” to her disease was to just workout harder was infuriating! One thing I disagree with you about is the portrayal of Violet's physical capabilities. Its not explicitly said, but Violet has EDS (which the author also has) which is a genetic condition where your connective tissue doesn't function well, your body is generally in pain, and your joints dislocate easily. I thought the portrayal of a character with a disability was really well done! I have a different chronic condition and I felt like I could relate to Violet in how you have to try harder than everyone else just to get by and how frustrating it can be to know that you are weaker than everyone. It made me less mad at Violet that she felt like she had to poison ppl before their fights. I also think the weight training she did paid off a lot because it helped prevent more EDS injuries like dislocations.

    • @gracesull78756
      @gracesull78756 9 місяців тому +3

      yeah like i love a good romantic subplot, i think fantasy can lead to some interesting explorations of relationships, and anyone can enjoy fantasy if they want to. but also something just always rubs me the wrong way about authors who clearly just use fantasy for dramatic backdrop and clearly do not consume fantasy. on the one hand not trying to gatekeep, but on the other hand it's just weird to me when they write a "fantasy" but don't actually seem to be inspired in that aspect or put effort into making it strong. idk i'm conflicted, i don't think fantasy has to be pretentious or anything, but also if you're going to do it then actually do it

    Deep breath. The death college isn't needed for the story. Violet being fragile can work. But not both. I went to basic training in 2000. The amount of basic physical training would break her. EDS from what I've read and what I've seen people say in different comments isn't something you can just power through. The physical training and combat training will result in several torn ligaments and the inability to continue training. The premise of the book lost me to be honest. Fragile daughter of a general goes to a death college to become a dragon rider against her will.
    The world building is just bad. You've got a war against a classification of enemies out of legends. Your riders go out to that fight unprepared and trained for melee combat with a being that can suck your energy when you are within their range. Of course the dragons don't want to bond, you get a magical being to suffer the lost of a being that shares their soul. Really? They don't want to bond, who would have thought? Why aren't they training with bows and arrows since they are on dragons and mounted archers could rain hell on the venin. This is before you read page one. The concept fails.
    I love dragons with personality and the psychic link. I call it Dragon horny = rider horny. This is a trope, but better authors have messed it up. Its very much under the influence. This is the only thing I will give her credit for, Xaden takes the kiss but stops. He shows that consent matters.
    Screw Dain. I liked his actions for a bit. He was trying to protect an old friend and that is okay. He tries to work around the rules to get her out of the rider quadrant. But the moment she bonds two dragons, all of that should have stopped.

    100% agree this is book with sex scene for people young enough not to have read one which makes Violet reacting to everything as if she’s 14 even though she’s not supposed to be make sense. That said, as someone who read Tamora Pierce’s lioness series at 12/13, I’d argue that a first sex scene book doesn’t have to be a bad book. I think this book is trash and I won’t read the rest of the series but the constant over the top emotional state as portrayed on the audiobook honestly had me laughing for at least the last half of the book just not when I was supposed to be so I can’t say I didn’t derive some enjoyment from reading it. This is genuinely such a treat! We love Hayden content! He's such a good sport with reading these and comes with such different insight that's fun to listen to. I haven't been able to get past the 25% of the book. I typically don't have too much of an issue with YA, but it felt like it was written so poorly that I couldn't even start to connect. So bummed since everyone had touted I'd love it as much as ACOTAR!

    I'm sorry, but has anyone here read the 'An Ember in the Ashes' series? Is it just me, or do some major elements seem very similar? For example, the child of an evil commander and the rebel, the reference back to the mythology book from the start, the setup in a military school, and the brother working for the rebels. I really hope I'm only imagining things lol. That being said, if Fourth Wing left you disappointed, you can try reading An Ember in the Ashes - it is an excellent YA fantasy series.

    You gotta read the second one! I feel like we either read different books or you guys missed some things 😅 Like they def talk about and explain the wyverns throughout. To the point where it was pretty obvious where it was going. I read it with my book club and everyone said they saw it coming. I hope you enjoy the second book more!! And I feel like Haden would enjoy the 2nd book more too! But I do agree about not getting to spend enough time with Liam! Everyone was like heartbroken and I was just there like.... "okay???"

      idk havent finished the whole video yet, but given that hayden at least is a fantasy reader, and if i remember correctly a fan of like wheel of time level fantasy, it's very likely that it's just not going to go uphill for them from what i've heard

      @@chandlerainsleycompletely agree!! I find it infuriating when an author waits until the second book to build the world. I have such a vivid imagination I’m normally able to envision fantasy worlds pretty easier, and I’ve NEVER struggled so hard to picture a world in my mind before!
      Also, everyone I know that loved the first says the second one has no plot, so if all it is about is plugging plot holes and answering questions from the first, I would have just preferred one book that was better edited.

    I know you probably won’t read it, but a lot of the “plot holes” you guys mentioned get explained in the next book. I enjoyed both books even though I’m not drawn to fantasy. We tend to have opposite preferences when it comes to books, so I fully expected how this was going to go.

      @@taylorgayhart9497 yeah agreed, imo the plot holes weren't "plot holes" if there were legit things missing, and i also don't think it should take reading the sequel for things to be fleshed out because it should've just been in the first to begin with- to me if you're going for fantasy then actually build the fantasy world. idk i do read a lot of fantasy, so my thoughts would be a little different because i expect more
