- 07/15/2023 Fort Dodge, Ia. This old CGW high bridge has been rolling freight since 1903! The UP still runs trains on this bridge, about one a day. Eagle Grove, Ia. This CNW caboose appears to have a fairly fresh paint job and original reporting marks!
The Long 2700’ Bridge is Freakin Impressive and is an Engineering Marvel from our Forefathers from over 100+ years ago. Thanks for sharing, Red. 👍🙏
You're welcome Ken! They don't build em like they used to😀
Thanks red for showing me the bridge which is a good for it age of 120yrs and seeing all the industry and trains and the dogs as well and with your drones above the birds telling you to stay away from the nest Thanks
You're welcome Elaine! Great engineering to last that long. Yes, the birds definitely don't like the drone!
Thanks Red another great one
You're welcome Ronald!
That’s nice a long fort dodge high bridge there in fort dodge Iowa nice CNW caboose there and yard actions and a rail there in eagle grove Iowa and great trains in montour Iowa red awesome trains 😎👍
Thanks Diego! Hopefully someday I'll catch a train on that high bridge👍
Thx. Nice shots. Impressive bridge.
You're welcome Bob!
Awesome video
Thanks CSX Fan!
Wow Red that’s one long bridge 👍🏻. I see the gang is out . Ya it’s Smokey here aswell . Nice horn salute. Love the drone 👍🏻😎 Robin out .
Yep, that one's a biggy Robin! Strange how the smoke moves in down here at times. I think there were 8 dogs that day👍
Hey Red ! Another great video . Nobody was wasting time passing your spot today . We love those high speed passings . As usual , excellent angle shots both on the ground and the drone making for an exciting video to watch .
( sorry about the smoke )
Your fans in the Great White North 🇨🇦
Yo Don/GWN! Only thing better would have been a train over the high bridge. Hope your fires get under control soon👍
Fantastic Red!! Thank You!
You're welcome Mark S!
Would love to sit there with you and watch the trains. Good video Red. Cute digs too
Thanks truckntim80! It's a great hang out. There are slow times here and there. RAGBRAI comes through Montour Thursday. It will most likely be very busy!
Kick ass video, Red!! Whole lot of content. Grain cars were running wild. I knew there had to be one CNW in the mix
Thanks Bekleidung! Lots of speed on those grainers. CNW hopper over that bridge would have been really sweet👍
Outstanding video of CGW memories! Haven't been ro Fort Dodge in some time. Thanks as always for your excellent work Red!
You're welcome Michael! Impressive bridge to see up close👍
Greetings Red: Great Video. Nice to see trains moving in your neck of the woods. With the strike taking place at the Port Of Vancouver B.C. Train traffic has slowed to a crawl, nothing is moving, in the past week we've had one train go by. It was mixed, no containers they are all in Vancouver and on the ships in the harbour. Those sealed gondolas are carrying contaminated dirty dirt. I really enjoy your video's and your drone footage. Excellent coverage from the ground and from the air. 🍁♂🏳🌈🌟✨🌟✨🌟
Yo Morgan! Glad you like my videos, just read about the strike. I didn't realize that was going on. Sounds like it's going to cause a big mess here in the US too. Rail traffic will most likely be backed up once the strike is over!
Very nice video keep up the great work
Thanks Codeman!
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 no problem at all
Excellent video shot 👌
Thanks William!
Excellent Video 📸😊
Thanks Johnnie!
This is the first video that I have seen of the former Chicago Great Western High Bridge in Ft. Dodge, Iowa. When I saw the brief description of this video about a Union Pacific High Bridge, my first thought was the Kate Shelley Bridge. I was not aware of the High Bridge in Ft. Dodge. The Eagle Grove, Iowa Yard is a wonderful place to view with a drone. It looks like Union Pacific has a lot of business at the Eagle Grove Yard. Your railfanning in Montour, Iowa was filled with many trains. The mixed freight trains had a good variety of different freight cars. The intermodal trains are usually not that interesting to watch because each intermodal train usually has the same container cars as the last intermodal train. I enjoyed watching this video and thank you very much for the drone footage of the High Bridge in Ft. Dodge, Iowa.
You're welcome Thomas! I uploaded a drone video of the Kate Shelley bridge awhile back. They are both impressive bridges. Wish I could have caught a train on the old CGW high bridge. Stack trains are definitely my least favorite too. RAGBRAI through Montour Thursday👍
On the other hand I enjoy the intermodal trains. The mix of containers and trailers can tell you the priority level of the train.
@@sandyg9228 Yes, and priority trains are usually fast👍
beautiful vid Red !! #boom
Thanks VTAC!
Very beautiful bridge
Yes! It surely is!
Very nice beautiful fantastic locomotive powerful 🚂🚂🚄🚄🛞🛞🪴✅👌👍🏆🚇🏆🎉 fully support
Thanks Mahmood! 👍

Morning Red. On behalf of all Canadians, I apologize for all the smoke you guys had. I stopped counting how many times you said "Canadian wild fires" lol. Fantastic drone videos. Not a bad size rail yard you videoed. Man that second train train was flying! That may be the fastest train I've seen you catch. Always keep your pants on and your stick on the ice they say, or something like that. Nice two DPUs on that auto rack train. Great video as always buddy. Cheers.
Hey Phantom! That sucks you have to lose all of the trees up there. Strange how some days are smoky and some not. Yes that one grain train was very fast, especially when standing right next to it!
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 ya, it really is quite sad how big these wild fires are getting, most of them by way of lighting strikes. All the trees and animals that are being killed. Keep taking awesome video my friend. Cheers
Nice
Outstanding view of that long high trestle, thank you!
You're welcome Rob!
I really like your drone filming of this structure!
@@williamh.jarvis6795 Thanks William! Infrastructure makes for great footage.
Another great video. I try and always look up the hazmat number you say out loud. Pretty interesting
Thanks David S!
Pretty ❤😊
Another great video Red. I really enjoyed the footage of the CGW bridge in Ft Dodge. I’ve only seen photos of it and didn’t appreciate the scale of it until your drone footage.
Thanks Dan! That bridge is amazing. Maybe next time I'll get a train on it👍
Hi, fantastic vidéos man welldone my name is Cherif I'm from Algiers north Africa.
Yo Cherif, thanks! Glad you like some Iowa scenery👍
Really cool super long mixed freight with lots of hazmat. 😊😊😊
beautiful engineering. reminds me a lot of High Bridge Kentucky!
It's impressive for sure!
I've been over the former CGW bridge at Ft. Dodge several times back in the 1980s. I was an ultrasound, rail test car (a truck with rail gear) operator for the C&NW at the time. My job was to locate broken rails and internal defects. I'm thankful I took photos from when I traversed those tracks on the bridge so many years ago. Nice "bird's eye" view of the old bridge and thanks for sharing!
You're welcome Wal! Sounds like you had a fun job back then. My Dad worked for the CNW during that time. He ran the weld plant in Tama and did track maintenance. He ran a highrail over the Kate Shelley bridge. Not sure if he ran over the CGW bridge.
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 I remember when Marty Gearhart worked at the Tama welding plant in a supervisory capacity. Gosh, I don't know how many times I was over the Kate Shelley bridge at Boone. I even walked across it several times when we had to do a special rail "base test" to locate cracks that were developing in newly laid rail.
@@WAL_DC-6B Yep, that's my Dad! I've learned a lot from him about railroading. He retired from the UP back in 2011. Mind if I ask your name that way I can see if he remembers you?
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 I was wondering if your dad was Marty! My name's Dan Uscian. Tell him hi and wishing him a terrific retirement. I took a "buyout" from the North Western in August 1991 and hired on with the Soo Line/Canadian Pacific a few weeks later. I retired from the Soo/CP in 2018 working my last 23 years as a locomotive engineer in yard/transfer service at Bensenville, IL.
@@WAL_DC-6B Sounds good Dan! I'll let him know. Him and Mom moved to the Houston area for retirement.
My grandparents lived a couple blocks from this spot. Remember as a kid in the late 60s/early70s watching trains from the eastern end, tried to walk across it once but got scared by the height. I would also hike down to the lower tracks and over to the dam on the river.
Great memories Bad Kitty!
Red, Great to see a video from my part of the state. Too bad you didn’t catch any trains. Usually there is a lot more power tied up in Eagle Grove on the weekend. The west end of the yard is stubbed. It was part of the line that went west towards South Dakota. A portion of which is still operating by the UP between Rolfe and Marathon.
Yes Sandy, I waited awhile for train traffic. A local told me trains usually cross the bridge in the morning. I'm guessing that area has the most left over CGW trackage and such. Montour made up for the shortage of trains👍
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 I’m guessing the track from Belmond, IA to the NEW Coop facility southwest of Ft Dodge is the longest remaining section on CGW track. The other would be from Waterloo to Olewein.
@@sandyg9228 Yes, the Iowa Northern uses that stretch to Oelwein quite often.
It is an awesome bridge though.
Great video Red! That's a great looking historic bridge! Man there was some fast long trains motoring through Montour! Looks like you need to arm that Drone with some bird take down capabilities! Have a great week mate!
🚂🇦🇺🇺🇸😎😎🚂
Thanks Agent Mulder! That bridge is a hidden jewel. Very few people know it's even there. Those birds 🐦 always make me a bit nervous. Have a good one👍
Amazing bridge!👍 Nice work!
Thanks ETTAT!
1830/1832 is sulfuric acid, and you're right, that was a lot of it. More than enough to take out that big, ol' bridge. 😲
Fantastic. Great unfolding of a great bridge. I'm only 2:50 into it...
Thanks Elizaveta!
Lots of very interesting long trains today. Great video today Red! 😊😊😊 The 3077 cars were likely contaminated soil on their way to a secure landfill. I always enjoy seeing your dogs. ❤😊😊 Tell them a Hoosier said hi. 😊
Thanks Gary! I try to fit the four leggers in when I can👍
Scary to cross !
It's an oldy!
Beautiful footage!! 120 years old!! I wonder if they've ever had problems with kids on it??
Thanks Scotabot! I'm sure it's had plenty of trespassers over the years.
Minimum of 4 trains Monday through Friday. Not including grain or ethanol
Dang, how many century bridges remain functional
Quite a few that I know of👍
I think they know you in Montour. You got two salutes. Good shots of the CGW bridge in Ft. Dodge. That was CGW's line from Oelwein to Council Bluffs. You even got a close-up of the Kawasaki at the end. Nice video Red.
Thanks Fred! Yep, I think the UP crews may be on to me👍 If the flags flying I'm filming!
The old CGW went line went northeast from Ft Dodge to Eagle Grove where it crossed the CNW. From there it continued on to Clarion where the line diverged heading east to Olewein then on to Chicago. The other line ran northeast to Mason City and on into Minnesota and the Twin Cities. The CGW depot still stands at the intersection of Central Ave and 21st. It’s an attractive, modern brick building built in the 1950’s.
Inscrita no Canal...saudações do Brasil 🇧🇷
Bela malha Ferroviária 👏👏🚂
The power poles give the bridge height some definition on the high bridge. Ill have to check that out next time im in fort dodge
It's impressive to see in person. Makes a lot of creaking noises as it heats up through the day.
Easy way to figure distance; 1320 feet/quarter mile, 2640 feet/half mile, 3960 feet/ three quarters of mile, 5280 feet/one mile. Might come in handy for doing drone distance.
The furthest I've flown is 7k feet. Tough to keep reception that far away!
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 thats roughly 1 1/4 miles, yes, reception would be difficult that far away.
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 i just saw on Google that Athearn now has the EMD F59PHI in HO scale, the unit pictured...........the METRA CNW heritage unit!
I've seen photos from near when it was built through today as the view doesn't really change. There is something special about the middle set of supports where it looks like Eiffel Tower supports. Very nice to see it in its entirety as some brush is growing up. 3 grain trains in a row is amazing and the surprise of a KCS unit which got to pull a former KCS (now COER) covered Hopper. A lot of empty gondolas going east probably for those three steel or aluminum slabs. Gon 2 was a black CNW car Those trains really kept blasting through and one train did have a higher-than-average # of contaminated soil cars as well as small dumpsters. In fact that 2 piece spine car near the end of the last W B train is for those little dumpsters. Great meet with the eastbound to wrap things up. Cant forget to say hi to the Furry Friends and when you photographed them you had just let them out as you could see their marks in the dew in the grass. Very nice items great tape. PS. If this is true in the next week or so Yellow Freight System May declare bankruptcy and or quit operations which will be odd considering how many trailers we see almost every tape
Yes Paul, that bridge is a true classic! A lot of people don't realize it's there. Three grain trains in a row did seem odd and they were among the fastest that day. Sounds like the strike in Vancouver may disrupt rail traffic here in the US soon. I'd like to know where all that contaminated dirt is coming from? The dogs were in full force that day. RAGBRAI through Montour Thursday. Gonna try and catch trains and thousands of pedal bikes!
Very interesting as always!
I wish the bridge was made of stone or concrete!
I am truly sorry for the smoke our fires are causing!
Are you coughing or choking a little like I was?
Thanks Andrew! Seems to maybe cause headaches on the really smoky days. I can't imagine how many trees are burning to get smoke all the way down here!
Need to Send you a Full Can of WASP Spray so we can Kill those WASPS around the Bell 🔔 once and for ALL. 😬👍 Thanks Red! 👍🙏
You're welcome Ken!
Maybe he's in a hurry to pick up corn before the prices go up 😅.
Those grainers were smoking!
Red, do you ever get out to the high bridge west of Boone?
Yes 52komatsu! I flew the drone over the Kate Shelley bridge with a train on it. Posted video last year.
Being built in 1903 I would be very hesitant to drive my vehicle under that trestle when a train was crossing it. 😮
Extremely SOLID as can be. 👍
From the air the bridge does look spindly. Drive one of the city streets that pass right next to the piers and get close look at the red granite foundation and iron work and you’ll see how substantial it is.
UP at Mountour is hauling ass
I like the speed too👍
Red how would you know when the battery 🔋 on starts to get really low ?
On your drone .
There is a battery life gauge on the controller Mike. The drone will actually return on it's own if it gets too low.
How fast was that train?
The grain train? Darn fast when you're standing right next to it👍
how many trains are on the cn line
I'd say 3to5 a day on average. That high bridge may see one a day.
1830 sulfuric acid
And the 1832 is used sulfuric acid!
23:02 they are for hauling trash. I don't like the idea of a train hauling trash. It's rarely uniformly loaded, there's no way to tell what's in it with 100% accuracy- what will the manifest say? "Garbage"? It could contain hidden hazmat that's not declared, unless it's been sorted honestly, I doubt it balances well, and really, dead material that has no further use doesn't belong on a train.
I'm not big on garbage trains either. Tells me there are a lot of full landfills out there.
