I'm so happy to have seen a Vampire The Masquerade GM, I'm having a story with these beautiful creatures of the night, and several of these tips are so helpful.
I really like Mercer and Carl for different reasons. Mercer-style GMing is what I find fun, but I channel Carl to keep my tendency to over-indulge in myself in check so it stays in service to the players and not the other way around.
I'm surprised that I just now saw this --- Jason Carl is one of my favorite Game Runners. Always fun to see into the perspective of each Storyteller. It helps set the ambience for the gaming environment. I think it's a good point, for the PC's & ST to glimpse into sync and to understand each other's approach to game time interaction. Not knowing what to expect, conduct wise, of every person involved, can create chaos at the table.
1:05 snap snap great song. 14:51 That is a Great Tip for all kinds of games. Thank you for all the great tips Satine Phoenix. Take care and have a happy Hallows Eve
Oh my GOD I thought that sounded like a Jerry Holkins-style rap at the beginning. Love it. She needs to get him in here for an interview about using player backstories; his game is 100% driven by the stories of his players but at the same time tells the backstory of his personal player character. Very inspiring to me as a DM and something I am trying to work on.
I played tabletop Vampire as well as LARP Vampire, and I enjoyed both immensely. Our LARP group wasn’t exactly 600. It was 30. And we had 1 Storyteller and usually 3 Narrators (sub-GMs for situational stuff). The Beast. This is a great RP tool, but it applies to more than Vampires. Half-Orcs: Rage. It burns all the time. Gruumsh hangs heavy in the blood, and with it comes the short fuse. Anything could set off even the most refined Half-Orc, and it takes a lot of work containing that. Lust. Luthic has her influence too. Her touch pushes all Orcdom to go forth and breed a lot. Half-Orcs feel this call too. They will be driven to mate often, and have difficulty making long term relationships work. Apart from their appearance, these two can also breed loneliness. They are more than big Axe wielders. Teiflings- Tyranny and Chaos. Depending on the source of their fiendish lineage, Teiflings may find tendencies toward control or breaking it. That could even be refined more by considering the specific Fiend the curse falls from. Taking a page from this makes that sort of behaviour more seriously. Aasimar- Judgement. Imagine knowing that the gods own personal soldiers, the angels, watch you. You’re own angelic guide might be ever present, watching...listening. Every choice is scrutinized. That’s a lot of pressure to consider, and some Aasimar fall for it. Hobgoblins- Honor and Glory. Also tyrannical, the honor of one’s self and banner are paramount. Behaviour, even when apart from the Banner, reflects on the Banner. Loss cannot be tolerated, and offence must be avenged. This is a high standard to live up to, especially if ones Banner has fallen. This race can be one filled with deep emotions that rarely surface but always burn. There are more cases, but in all of them there’s more on the line than just the Self. That makes Combat far more complex than winning or losing, because it could be ones lineage, family, soul, honour, or more on the line. I play a Teifling Paladin currently. What started as an arrogant and aloof ponce of a Noble has evolved. His House demanded success in securing trade negotiations with certain Underdark factions. There was a focus on resolving things peacefully. One cannot trade with a city one has tried to cause trouble in. But... The loss of his Squire cut deep. Combat became about trying to drown out the guilt of her death. With his negotiations at an end, his drive to succeed became about nothing but revenge. Until he met someone. And she gave him a reason to live. Combat has again become about survival first. He has something to live for. Many player characters don’t try to have a story arc. It’s just about XP and “that cool ability to max” or a magic item or experimenting with multi-classing. Give the players an arc. Make them Care about WHO they are more than WHAT they are, and they’ll invest in that. Combat will be taken far more seriously. Thanks for the great guest. Jason’s work is amazing. Thank you Satine. Again. Always.
This Sunday I have a big session. We're finally going to find the Deck of Many Things. But I want a really impressive session leading up to it. And an impressive combat to boot. So I'd say this episode was timed specifically for me.
#askSatine I'm glad to see non D&D games on here. If you haven't yet, you should check out Runehammer (formerly Drunkens and Dragons). I think he would be a very different guest. Hankerin' is the business.
Online you can meet people to play with. I play over Discord and Skype with groups. *It's not the easiest way to find people you play well with, but after 3-4 groups I went through I found a group that works best for me and everyone. roll20.net is a good site for this.
Doesn't matter where you live for Roll20, long as you have an internet connection. I hear it's always easy for a DM to find a group in there because most of the people would rather be PCs
Sorry I stopped listening after I heard “shopping mall ziggurats are common”, and my mind wandered to What’s sold there? Are the stores parodies of real franchises? Are there magic escalators, that can’t catch your shoelaces? Do teenage monsters hang out there? Is there a wishing fountain that has a 2% chance of casting Wish?
The way my GM integrated our characters into the story was through something called Randy's Rumble. It's a tavern that has a bar brawl of the same name, and whoever is left standing at the end wins the gold of all other participants. Basically, whoever wants to compete chips in, and if they win, they get the entire pot, if they lose, their portion goes to the winner. My dwarf won because he was using his hammer, dealing non-lethal damage, and thus was able to get higher attack rolls.
OH THANK YOU for not centralizing in D&D all the time... THANK YOU! Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Dungeons and Dragons, but knowing G&S isn't just about D&D makes me respect you guys a whole lot more. Also, I'm a multi-system guy, so I really like playing Vampire, old and new, D&D, and everything else. Not Dungeon World though. I don't like Dungeon World. I'm sorry Don't mind me
I'd recommend getting a villain first and then coming up with a plan for them, rather than coming up with an idea for a story and then getting a villain that could fit that. Super villains really should have their own unique flavor. A lot of the rest depends on the tone of the game (Like more "four color" or at the opposite end something like Watchmen) and whether you're making villains (or using premade ones that the players won't have heard of, usually made for the game) or using known characters.
The Whisperer In Darkness Excellent advice. Making a complex villain with interesting “captains” adds depth and gives directions to separate plots. Giving each player “something to lose” is also important, so they have something to fight for.
I wish I had a GM like you when I first tried to get into Dungeons and Dragons really had a hard time to get into a game when the guy in charge is so controlling you have little to no say in things. Though My VTM I never had that problem.
koffinkat666 I never would have expected that from Satine, she doesn't give that vibe to me at all. But I mean if Mia Khalifa can stream on Twitch anything is possible
i liked these more before they became interviews. they were shorter and more explanatory with the focus only on the subject of the video rather than on the interview dynamic and the social aspect of two people talking to each other.
...that was terrible. the rhyme scheme was awful and forced. at any rate I normally only have 1 or 2 combats encounters in a session...they're both deadly though.
It was beat poetry, not rap. What rhythms and patterns exist mimic those of natural speech so there is little in the way of structure around which to form schemes of any sort. There is never so much a rhyme scheme as moments where the moment, image, or emotion is drawn out by use of close quarters rhymes (3 or 4 in succession with or without intervening verbiage), revolving back on the point with a new angle or more sensory information, musing on the associations with the image before coming back to the narrative, or lapsing into onomatopoeiac riffs (similar to stereotypical scatting in Jazz). On the whole it was a half decent stab at the genera but she was conveying information and setting up the thesis for the episode and Beat has always been better at conveying setting, emotion, or reaction than information.
hey mike. not always but i'm really picky when it comes to poems and songs. if the rhyming feels off I consider it bad, and I consider free verse lazy.
No/minimal combat.... Why have classes at all?!?!? Just have races and skills. DM looks around the table of a combat light game and notices 4 bards and 3 rogues. Yay, fun. Sigh. Diablo sucks as a RPG and dungeon crawls are lame but combat light......., no.
So, if you don't like rappy spoken word stuff you believe that person should have things stuck up their ass? You're the one handing down judgement.... I just stated my opinion. We're aloud to do that in america. And people like you who are into sticking things in asses are now aloud to get married so congrats!
dude ur telling me to chill ur writing a paragraph on a comment no one will look at i just think matt is was better at telling a story and explaining shes not bad but matt started this
There are a lot of games that don't have much combat (though I've not done it with D&D). Like Call of Cthulhu, Song of Ice and Fire rpg, most FATE games, World of Darkness depending who you play (that guy was talking about one), etc.
I'm so happy to have seen a Vampire The Masquerade GM, I'm having a story with these beautiful creatures of the night, and several of these tips are so helpful.
D&D is cool and everything but I'm ride or die for VtM, man.
Jason Carl is about the best GM I've ever seen. No flash. Just story.
I really like Mercer and Carl for different reasons. Mercer-style GMing is what I find fun, but I channel Carl to keep my tendency to over-indulge in myself in check so it stays in service to the players and not the other way around.
Watching this after having become a die hard 'LA by Night' fan.
TWO of my favorite people!!! Jason and Satine!!
Ha, Jason was a college friend. Glad he's made something of himself:)
Jason Carl seems like one of the best GMs out there, especially for horror. I think I would be intimidated as a PC.
I'm surprised that I just now saw this --- Jason Carl is one of my favorite Game Runners.

I thought I was 'cured' of my interest in World of Darkness ... *thanks* Jason & Satine! ;P

OMG JASON CARL!!! I am so happy to see him!!
3:35 you are my favorite GM most love Vampire masquerade especially as you DM it.
Had no idea how awesome jason was - had to come back and rewatch!

Man I can listen to your voice forever. One new fan.
This was a great episode. It would be awesome if you covered more non-D&D games here!
This Sunday I have a big session. We're finally going to find the Deck of Many Things. But I want a really impressive session leading up to it. And an impressive combat to boot. So I'd say this episode was timed specifically for me.
I got to play the new 5th edition of vampire the masquerade at #gencon50 and Jason was in my party! Oh it's pretty frickin cool, btw.
That is fucking awesome.
Man I wasn't ready for Satines' freestyle rapping at the beginning
Had a player shop for hats for a solid 2 hours of the first session. It was basically awesome.
#askSatine I'm glad to see non D&D games on here. If you haven't yet, you should check out Runehammer (formerly Drunkens and Dragons). I think he would be a very different guest. Hankerin' is the business.
Aw man, Hankerin from Runehammer would be an awesome guest!
I think he has a pretty unique way to look at the game, and well, just about everything else, too.
Sounds cool. Yet to play any DnD though. RIP everyone being busy or not interested.
Try your local game shop. Or, if you don't have one, Roll20.net. Good luck with your adventures!
I live about an hour drive from everything. Plus job. HNNNG Thx though!
Online you can meet people to play with. I play over Discord and Skype with groups.
*It's not the easiest way to find people you play well with, but after 3-4 groups I went through I found a group that works best for me and everyone.
roll20.net is a good site for this.
We'd be willing to consider having you join our game, let me know if you're interested.
Doesn't matter where you live for Roll20, long as you have an internet connection. I hear it's always easy for a DM to find a group in there because most of the people would rather be PCs
In general I agree with most of what you said. In Vampire, as a GM, combat vs mortals is the norm given it is so brief.
Ahhhh I love Jason Carl!
I've never seen JC look so sanguine and content, like the living embodiment of the painting at the end of Ghostbusters2. Xx
I really want to see the story continuation beyond that "What do you do?"
Why have combat when you can have *COOL MATH GAMES* !?
DeathByProcrastination Isn't it the same at the tabletop? Unless you're a LARPer, I suppose.
Im fangirling over these two!! Ahh!!
Gosh, I miss those times of hope and trust...
GM Rap!!!

are you guys thinking about moving the way of One DnD? I just really like the World of Darkness setting and I would love to see it flourish.
aarrgghh, I am nostalgic of the days when I actually GMd a GURPS game!!!! :'( The childhood days....
I clicked purely for the Jason Carl.
It's hilarious seeing Satine go, 'Wait, play a role? People do that in RPGs?' So clearly a DnD player.
I’m a year late, but Jason Carl is a true master!
Anybody know the ending theme? I really feel somebody needs to put that in the description, I use these for me games!
OH THANK YOU for not centralizing in D&D all the time... THANK YOU!
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Dungeons and Dragons, but knowing G&S isn't just about D&D makes me respect you guys a whole lot more.

Not Dungeon World though. I don't like Dungeon World.
I'm sorry
Don't mind me
Miranda is my fav vamp!! Satine you rule!!!
I am totally using the metal disk on waking up thing haha.
Satine = Most Amazing Vampire ever!
Love the "Spice?" jar in the background
"hunger dice"?
so Vampire: The Masquerade could have just as easily been sub-titled Vampire: The Hunger Games!
great video
I love this series. But recently, I've been called upon to run a Super Hero campaign. Any tips for that genre?
I'd recommend getting a villain first and then coming up with a plan for them, rather than coming up with an idea for a story and then getting a villain that could fit that. Super villains really should have their own unique flavor.

this fucking music from the beginning is driving me insane
Sattie PHX got them sweet rhymes!
Also, that dude is a legit Nosferatu.
Sick rhymes! :D
Amazing
I spy Goldar!
this episode is interesting!
I wish I had a GM like you when I first tried to get into Dungeons and Dragons really had a hard time to get into a game when the guy in charge is so controlling you have little to no say in things. Though My VTM I never had that problem.
*snaps*
Nice... Rhimes... :D
jazz man what a catwalk
love vampire lore! :)
DAYUM!
He kind of looks like a vampire.
I will take that as a true compliment. Thanks! :)
Eros was never seen again. The masquerade has been upheld.
*clicks fingers*
She gives me the vibe of a dominatrix mistress, no idea why.
She was a pornstar, And she is into Darker subculture. Maybe that's why?
Also she's a total babe and I luvs her
koffinkat666 wait, what?
I shouldn't have said anything......Incoming mass of Pornhub Nerd searches incoming!!!!
;D
koffinkat666 I never would have expected that from Satine, she doesn't give that vibe to me at all. But I mean if Mia Khalifa can stream on Twitch anything is possible
Oh Satine, you ended up being such a horrible being.
I miss Matt
TzarNicco is he not coming back?
for gm tips
He died
They have different GMs. Because you can only learn so much from one GM
Viper3220 still miss him
How can I simp for her?
4th

thanks for the lesson, I never said it was rap and I knew what she was trying.
clericofchaos1 Are you always negative?
hey mike. not always but i'm really picky when it comes to poems and songs. if the rhyming feels off I consider it bad, and I consider free verse lazy.
dude i don't take anything on youtube seriously. chill.

“There can be a lot of conflict in romantic situations.” ... we’ve scene the porn Satine :p so much respect for you and your personal journey :)
Please do not rap.
You lost me when you started rapping.
So, if you don't like rappy spoken word stuff you believe that person should have things stuck up their ass? You're the one handing down judgement.... I just stated my opinion.
