- In this video, learn how to use "to be supposed to" in English. This is an advanced sentence structure that will help you sound fluent and natural in English.
"To be supposed to" is a regular part of any native English speakers vocabulary. We use this expression on a daily basis.
Knowing how to use this expression correctly will help you sound fluent, natural and advanced in English. Plus it will help you understand native English speakers a lot better as well.
First, I explain what this expression means. We use this expression to talk about obligation and requirement.
Next, I explain the sentence structure using different example sentences.
You form this expression with: Subject + To Be + Supposed + Infinitive.
It's important to note that this is a verb "To Be" expression and it's the verb "To Be" that's conjugated with the time reference and subject.
We talk about how you can use this expression in both the present simple (for a future obligation) and the past simple (for a past obligation that didn't happen).
Finally, you get the chance to practice this expression by forming your own example sentences in the comments.

When and how do we use "to be supposed to have + past participle", for example:
He's supposed to have called his uncle yesterday.
Can it be used to express beliefs for example we don't know if he called his uncle yesterday, but he should've.

That's a good way to put it - a commitment. I was previously referring to expectations and that had my son confused :)) nevertheless, is a plan I've written for myself considered to be a commitment? :))) could I say, looking at the future tasks on the list, "OK, I'm supposed to buy this and write this, what should I do first?" SHould there always be something external or another person laying obligations to use this phrase?

Hum, that's a good question. In that case, you can think of it as there's an obligation to do something (live without that person), but he doesn't know how to do it. Ex/ Let's say your friend wants you to meet them in 20 minutes downtown. You can say "How am I supposed to get there in 20 minutes, traffic is terrible". Hope that makes sense :)
