    Hi Sweet Friends, Today it'a all about tallow! A number of you have expressed concern that I don't leave it in my bone broth - and may be throwing it out!! Oh no! I would never throw out tallow!! I just like to defat my bone broth because I find it more pleasing to my palate - however - that said, leaving the tallow in your broth is fine too! Enjoy it anyway you like it The most important thing is to make sure your drinking bone broth! Now - all of that said...I do use a bit of tallow to "seal" the bone broth I plan to keep in the fridge for more than a few days so as to help keep it fresh. It's a great trick! Love, Mary

    I also keep the organic fat from all the broths. Such a delicious added flavor. Gramma always served her chicken noodle soup without defatting. As a child I wondered how my winter chapped lips always improved at her house! Many blessings.

      Alison Bock - Oh Alison, I love that you shared about your chapped lips improving!! Isn’t that the truth!! Have you seen the video where I make the tallow balm!! I use it on my face and all over my body. I love it. I make one with lemon essential oil that I keep in the kitchen. I’ve given it to all my friends but when I tell them it’s made from beef fat...they cringe...until they try it!! LOL!! Then they are in love!! Thanks so much for sharing your story!! So glad you’re here!! Love, Mary❤️😘❤️

    Mary,
    that broth looks yummy! my doctor recommended to my son for gut-health a fermented broth using only this:
    Miso Paste, Avocado Oil, Balsamic Vinegar, Soy Sauce, Onions, Carrot, Celery , Tomatoes, Mushrooms.
    I give it to both of my sons and has helped a lot during stressful times at school.

    Thanks Mary for the great video.. I was waiting to see if you mentioned that the fat actually preserves the broth.. :) It really is amazing at that, much like wax on the top of jellies. So glad to see you use it too.. It is truly an amazing fat.. And if you so wished to you could rinse it off, clarify it, freeze it, and use it for soap when you get enough. Thanks for being so informative. :)

    I keep the fat in mine since I'm used to keeping it in sinigang. Also since I've been drinking coffee with coconut oil and unsalted grass fed butter I'm even more used to fat in a beverage. The texture isn't off putting to me but for other's they prefer it blended up which makes distributes the oil better and makes it frothy.

    I was as excited to get beef tallow from the prepared beef bones. Was really disappointed that the grease that rose to the top was orange. The broth was a wonderful gelled texture, but haven’t found anyway to remedy the color of the grease that rose to the top. I’ve decided to keep the orange tallow jic, and possible fry potatoes, etc in it.

    I have a concern about tallow won't it clog the arteries, I've never had bone broth before, we use ox tails in stew or provision soup, it's really delicious.

    • @MarysNest
      @MarysNest  5 років тому +6

      Thanks so much for visiting. I'll bet your oxtail soup is delicious. Beef tallow doesn't clog the arteries. Unfortunately, there was a great deal of misinformation disseminated by Dr. Ancel Keys regarding his study of the effects of saturated fat on the diet. This lead to many Americans eating less saturated fat and more carbohydrates - especially those foods made with high fructose corn syrup...which created our obesity epidemic. Since much of his research has since been called into question, people are now turning back to eating traditional saturated fats including tallow, lard, and butter.

    Mary, how long can you keep in fridge with fat layer on? I made beef broth 3 weeks ago. I had two containers in fridge; I used one right away but (I'm embarrassed to admit) the other container got buried at the back of the fridge. I sure hate to throw it away. Thoughts appreciated. Blessings to you!-Lori😁

    • @MarysNest
      @MarysNest  5 років тому +5

      L Miller - Great Question!! I find that it can stay fresh for about 2 weeks with a good fat layer on top and placed in the back on the lowest shelf in your fridge. However...Some folks have told me that it can even last longer than that...but we drink it before that!!😀 So What I would do, is remove the fat layer, smell it to check for freshness...and if it smells fine, warm it up and taste it. I bet it’s going to be fine. Keep me posted and let me know how it is. BTW...are you a regular bone broth maker? And if so, are you making it on the stove-top, slow cooker, or pressure cooker? I have really been leaning toward the slow cooker. Thanks for your input!! Love, Mary❤️😘❤️

      @@MarysNest Thanks Mary. I will do it. Yes, I make it regularly. I can a lot of it and do it mostly on stovetop for 3 days but have done it in my slow cooker. I don't have an instant pot. Just no room for more gadgets. Love your knowledge!

      L Miller - I know what you mean about no room!! LOL!! Have you read Sally Fallon’s book “Nourishing Broth”? I link to it in the description of this video. I love that book. I used to make bone broth for 3 days too...on the stove top. Then I read Sallys book and she recommended the slow cooker for 12 hours. I love doing it this way. It’s so easy and then I reuse the bones. Next week, I’ve got a video coming out called “perpetual” bone broth where I talk about reusing the bones. So far, it’s working great!! Thanks for sharing your insights too!! So glad you’re here. Love, Mary❤️😘❤️

    Hello Mary I love your pleasant voice and your marvellous tips. I get the fat that settles on top of the beef (tallow) can the chicken fat be used for further cooking. It is not as dense as the beef. In the past I do lots of chicken broth and have always discarded the fat which settles on top of the broth. I would appreciate your thoughts. Many thanks, and I love to watch your videos.

    Hi Mary. I love your channel, thank you so much! I was wondering if you can tell me if tallow is the same thing as the grease leftover from ground beef? I started canning and freeze-drying ground beef, so what I do is drain the meat in a large jar and then put it in the refrig. There's a large layer of whitish grease on the top, so I scoop that out. Thank you for all the information. :)

    Excellent video as always. Have you ever tried using the tallow to make soap? I have quite a bit and am interested in learning (non-food related) ways to use it :-)

      Hi Andrea, I have not made soap with it but I have made two creams with it - one is a tallow balm and the other is a lavendar food cream (love it!!). Search the videos on my channel and you'll find them. (Sorry not to put links, but UA-cam doesn't like links in comments.) Love, Mary

    Try KETO, you will never go back to sugar and for you it would be so easy, you are almost there. (It is a proper Human diet)
    I save my Chicken, Pork, Beef and Bacon drippings/fat all in separate containers and buy Duck Fat, Tallow and Real (untreated) Lard when I can find it.
    I use real Fat for everything from Mayo to Salad Dressing to cooking Chicken Breasts (or other non-fatty meats)
    Bone Broth is like my favorite Health Food... it is so good and so good for you.

    I'm sure Texans generally don't like when New Yorkers move to Texas, but this New Yorker is more Texan than the natives!
