I just found your channel, I really like the way you do things, how you give good info and then get out of the way. A lot of people don't know when to stop trying to narrate and it's a rare skill.
Thank you ma'am!
And a *BIG* thank you right back! Yes, the amount of info needed it kind of an art form... and I know we sometimes still go too long or too short. But, we try! -DeAnn
I am a grown man and that Nebraska train had my heart pumping.
When one of these fire breathing dragons crosses your path - of course the heart gets pumping! Thank for watching - and the comment. -DeAnn
She just oozes power looking at her.
I'm from litchfield,mn and this old steam locomotive train is incredibly train I ever seen when I was just a little boy I watched the train go bye here it load and cool I give this a thumb up for this video.
I always enjoy viewing footage of UP 3985 in operation as it was for a long period a major piece of UP steam heritage equipment, hopefully within the next 10 years Challenger 3985 will be rebuilt/ returned back to operation again after receiving maintenance from the railroad repair shops at Silvis, Illinois where the locomotive is currently housed at.
Nothing like the sound of a steam whistle. Sad to read in other comment that its shut down. Thank you for video.
the 2nd biggest locomotive and big boy the 1rst biggest locomotive
Beautiful example of a 4-6-6-4!
Man It's so sad they retired her. I was hoping they would get her running again so they could doubleheader with 4014. Two GIANT articulated running together would have been so incredible. I don't think has been done since the days of steam. At least that I know of.
They won't be restored 3985 since big boy is back on the track. So they got 4014 and 844 double headed but they use 3985's tinder to give big boy to converter oil instead
I just saw recently on another You Tube channel that 3985 is scheduled to be restored.
@@mikemullay5622 up 3985 and up 5511 are and a couple of up diesel locomotives and some of up,s rolling stock
getting restored by railroad heritage of mid west
Union pacific coming through!
And coming through with a lot of muscle! 😃 -DeAnn
Loving anything “Choo-Choo”! Thanks
Me too! Choo-choo!! Thanks for watching. -DeAnn
Never seen a lady talking about steam trains!
Yep. Some people don't always appreciate it! :-) I'm not a rivet counter, but I enjoy watch a PRR K4 all the way to, of course, Big Boy 4014! -DeAnn
Awesome video
your welcome, y'all have great Easter weekend and be safe
really cool! my compliments ma'am
DeAnn here... thank you!!
Magnificent.
POWERFUL...
I want to see Challenger 3985 go through Allegheny Country, those guys out there would have a complete 4 chamber heart attack seeing 3985 from the Westside Cruise all through Allegheny Country on the east side.HAHAHAHAHA!!.(I'd love to see that, even better,BIG-BOY 4014!!)
How about... since we are dreaming... 4014 and 3985 doubleheading... with 844 chasing the pair?
@@Railfandepot That will work too!!.Even better!!.
Have you heard that 3985 has been donated? And is going to be restored to running condition?!
Oh yes. We are watching developments closely...and, we have footage of the "hospital train" that took her to her new restoration home in Illinois. Look for that soon. Thank you for watching! -DeAnn
MAX & RUBY 🎹
This went thru layette in 2010 about 65 mph
What a site that would be!! I wish I could have seen 3985 running in person. -DeAnn
up 3985 is about to meet her big brother up 4014 and her other sibling up844 the living legend
When the 3985 comes back from overhaul are you gonna do coverage on her
YES!! And, we have footage of the "hospital train" that took her to her new restoration home in Illinois. Look for that soon. Thank you for watching! -DeAnn
Hey Folks, look at the Grain Elevator at 6:15, food from the Farmers to all of America.
NEVER GiVE UP 🎹
It is a vry strog engine !!! Super !
Yes it is!
How about Battle For Donner Pass ?
Is the diesel loco the centennial emd dda40x ?
Yep, the Centennial is the most powerful diesel locomotive built in the USA.
Isn't that great a diesel electric being towed home by a steamer.
Yerp, sometimes those cute diesels need help. '-) -DeAnn
The Thumbnail mentioned 0 to 60 . . . are the run times posted somewhere?
Zero... is obviously when it starts up... it is really is a nice close-up video. 60 is the speed 3985 was limited to when she was stretching her legs between towns. There are several views in this preview and more in the DVD where she really gets going at track speed.
What is the diesel lo omotive for?
I guess for aerodynamics of braking
Is 3985 still running, if not why isn’t she running
Union Pacific put 3985 in the shop about when they acquired Big Boy 4014. Both were in the shop at the same time. There was some thought that both would be restored, however the cost (rumored to $5 million) and time involved, meant UP chose to concentrate on 4014. When that project was done, they evaluated several things and decided they could keep one big steamer in top-top running condition, and that could not be 3985. She is scheduled to be donated to a UP town (I forget which one) for display. -Tim
@@Railfandepotthank you for the information
Illegal to follow the locomotive withe camera as it passes by?
Not if you are on public property, or on property that you have permission to be on. Right at trackside though is a non-no.
Sadly 3985 has been retired as of January 2020
Not retired, but is being rebuilt due to mechanical problems.
Last word is it's retired. Apparently Ed has no further interest in the engine.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Pacific_3985 www.american-rails.com/3985.html locomotive.fandom.com/wiki/Union_Pacific_No._3985
Yes and that is a bummer. From the report it sound like we were lucky to have her as long as we did. But, now we have 844 AND 4014! :-)
@@briankistner4331 I'm not sure if it's that or the brass said no to the funding. I still say she's better than 4014.
Saw 3985 every time it would come to California. Sad it won’t be running anymore, but happy that 844 is still around, and 4014 coming back.
Is this a gas turbine engine
No. Good old piston power
This is one of the largest steam locomotive ever built. We do have a video on the UP turbines. Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/spngeetQfRI/v-deo.html
it looks like a really nice engine and I really like the old steamers but I have to be honest it really turns me off from them in ruins the whole effect of the nostalgic look of them when all the sudden you see a diesel engine attached to them you get the impression more the steam train isn't doing the pulling it is all the diesel just pushing it and it just really ruins the whole effect of the nostalgic look of the steamer supposedly supposed to be in action.
It's for dynamic breaking, and emergency movements in case of failure to keep insurance happy lol.
in the last scene the power engine is gone
Old steamer pulling a train, great! DDA40X pulling a train, great! DDA40X and old steamer in a train, CRAP!
@@MarcABrown-tt1fp But actually the diesel can stay some little distance from steam train. I saw a video in English(if memory serves right ), a diesel locomotive leaded a train with over size load, then a steam locomotive follow at back with a distance about several cars, they said it's for safety reason.
@@johnmagin3379 But it supposed to pull a train like the one on its left side @ 10:07, not like the toy train it was pulling.
wish you would learn some rudimentary geography. 3985 usually stays out in the Great Plains States. You have to get past the Mississippi River to get into the Mid-West.
Is Minneapolis not Midwest? Past the Mississippi? So Missouri and one of the great cities of the Midwest, St. Louis, is not the Midwest? I'll bet it is news to them! Maybe I don't need a geography lesson?
Isn't that what the Challengers were built for? The Big Boys pulled them up the hill out of LA, then handed over to the speedsters for the prairies?
waste my time to watching video where is dead stop to 60 mph..
I'm not sure what you mean. A complete sentance, or thought, would help the communication.
If you mean we wasted your time because 3985 was stopped (?) at the beginning of the video and then goes 60MPH...well, yes, it's what the thumbnail advertises.
If you mean we wasted your time watching 3985...well, I'm not sure what to say. I mean, we didn't force you to watch the video.
3985 is a majestic beast that we may never see run again, so quite a few folks appreciated the video.
I suggest not watching more of our videos. They trigger you. - Tim
I was enjoying this until I saw the un needed, nasty, stinking diesel connected.
Didn’t need them way back then, don’t need them now.
The Challenger didn't need the diesel, but Union Pacific did. If a diesel trailing big steam is the price we pay for having big steam - I am willing to pay that price. For more, see this: steamgiants.com/common-steam-locomotive-questions-answered/#why-is-there-a-diesel-with-the-steam-locomotive
