The one where she's pulling the container train up the hill at the speed limit is better, especially when she passes the container train going down the hill with 10 diesels to power it.

So very glad I caught this pulling the circus train in 2010. Little did I know that it would be the 3985’s next to last trip. And the circus train succumbed to Liberal protestors a few short years later.
Interestingly, it looks like this was from the late 80s, as the 3985's tender seems to be in a coal configuration (unlike with Big Boy 4014 who was converted during restoration, they didn't convert her to oil until 1990).
UP's Steam fleet is really neat. It's sad that the idea of returning older locos for exhibition wasn't around when the UP's Turbine locos were retired. Can you imagine standing next to the track when with one of those rolling past, it would be like having a 747 at full throttle slowly moving past you 😁
Thought I saw TWO trains entering that curve... DAMN, a debate about drivers being in synch??? LOL That guy would have a stroke looking at old film of the Pennsy Duplexes! Those suckers could really spin and slip out of synch!!!
Right, but diesel locomotives have higher tractive effort and better adhesion and they move the heaviest trains on earth in the Pilbara region of Australia.
@@Jemalacane0 Eh diesels aren't about huge power and traction, the biggest benefit by far over steam is their versatility and ability to run in multiple which basically made huge steam locomotives like 4014 obsolete. You can lash together 5 diesels and it'll be far more powerful than any steam locomotive but it still only takes one crew to operate and at the end of it you can split them all apart to pull 5 different trains.

They're called dome cars. UP called them "Astrodomes." Observation cars are tail cars with round ends or in the old days, brass railings for politicians speeches.
Given the location, I don't think it was. It looks like this was shot around the Tie Siding area, which if so, then the train was heading east towards Cheyenne.

DASCO2136 ok. I get 1 and 3 but The steamers had to do it by themselves before the advent of diesel power so I would think this big boy could handle mountain grades by itself
At first I was going to call this digital bogus... then I did many gnat's ass detail comparisons... and.. I find zero faults. So unless someone is REAL good at video overlay, with lots of spare time on their hands, it is, in fact, a six-and-a-half minute span with two trains. Definitely a once-in-a-lifetime place to be standing with a camera. Very cool!
Hard to believe this was only nine years ago. The resolution is poor. Even for back then? Also, I imagine this must be a " fans only " video as there is no explanation for those of us who love the rails, both steam and diesel, who could use a backstory. Where the hell is Sherman Hill? I gave a thumbs up but think you could do better.
@@dustyshackleford8674 That could be, but we're still left to guess which is disappointing. It could be in the 60s when some of the last locos were still sharing the tracks with the diesels. Today I have viewed locos completely restored being put to work on select routes in the present.(2010s)
Not really. One Progress SD and two GE's. I see mixes like this every day in front of my place at Sunset Falls in Index WA. It is nice to see more SD's as I am sick of seeing so many GE's. A BNSF engineer made an interesting comment a couple of days ago that the ge loco's were a lot cheaper then the Progress SD's and that is why the railroads invested heavily in them for a while. Also given the the EPA tried to put EMD out of business, they had some catching up to do. But Progress is on the rise in a really big way. Starting to see trains with only Progress Locos, and no GE. . EMD/Progress still has the majority of patents on locomotive technology, some of which you can not get on a GE, and I suspect that they charge accordingly for some of those innovative features.
I agree with 3RTracing. I even saw an ancient SD (45, I think) doing yard hosteling goat work last week with brand new BNSF livery paint.. so I would guess they plan on keeping it around. What I'd really love to see would be the UP to round up a few of the old 6900s, paint them up nice and send them out on the line across the nation in a pretty little set for the public (at least those of us who know the difference) to oogle over.
It was 2 EMD SD60Ms bracketing an SD40-2. The lead SD60M 6133 has the original 3 window wide cab design affectionately called 'tri-clops'. The trailing SD60M 6314, had the newer two window design that became standard on later EMD wide cab designs
This is a bogus video of the Challenger. It's been inserted through some animation photoshop type program. The proof is the Challenger in Steam's Train Simulator. The driving wheels are synchronized, so this cannot be a real Challenger! I wish I had been around at the time of steam. It was at the end of phasing out when I was growing up, but still remember seeing the engines when I was maybe 5 yoa. My dad had taken me to a roundhouse where they were working on steam loco's. Loved watching your vid. Two thumbs up.
+Sincronicity not to be an ass, but this is one of those cases where u should keep your mouth shut to keep from proving yourself a fool. this IS NOT photoshoped, its the real challenger. you do realize that in ts, its a stylized version of the trains, right? in real life, one group of drivers can spin while the other group keeps traction. never ever EVER will you see both sets of drivers in perfect sync. this is only one reason why they wouldnt be in sync. whatever the reason, there is NO need to have them in perfect sync, other then aesthetics, like in a game.

Not sure about telegraph poles, but power poles are generally 500 ft. I use that to figure out how far I can see in the fog.

there appears to be two liquid fuel tenders and an older water tender behind the engine (or vice versa) either way i'd say oil.
