how and why was it in a parking lot? sorry im a newbie
Welcome to our channel! It is an interesting story... Big Boy 4014 was donated to the Rail Giants Museum in Los Angeles County in 1961, but then in (roughly) 2012 UP started to look for a Big Boy to restore for the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike in 2019. The museum and UP reached a deal on 4014... but now UP had to get it out of Pomona, California and back to Cheyenne, Wyoming. The first part of that epic trip was across thuis parking lot. Thanks for watching! -DeAnn
@@Railfandepot Okay, how and why a parking lot with temporary tracks? obviously they store these in a rail shed for dismantling etc? I I've seen all the vids of this thing, very cool, and im not a train guy. but the parking lot thing makes no sense to me lol! unless the parking lot was built later over old tracks, rendering the beast isolated.
@@sidewaysthroughthekitchend3075 Yes, Big Boy 4014 had over the years become isolated to her track in the museum. In the intervening years the mainline had moved and parking lots built. No one ever suspected, after all 50+ years had gone by, that the UP would be back to take Big Boy home. :-) -DeAnn
@@Railfandepot thank you, cool train. great vid!
She was committed to the Pomona Fair Grounds out east of Los Angeles as a display, after being taken out of srevice..The fairgrounds has a parking lot maybe 4 times bigger than at a Best Buys / Home Depot sized one !! The tracks along its side were/are isolated from the E/W main line as merely display/storage tracks...
They had to leap-frog temporary panel tracks across the parking lot to roll Big Boy out TO the main line where they spliced in a temporary switch track so she COULD get on the main line !! Capeesh ?
September 2020 - have been watching the Big Boy running the tracks now. Powerfully and beautifully majestic! Brings tears to the eyes. 🇺🇸 🚂 🇺🇸
Is 4014 being exercised recently, in and around Cheyenne WY? I saw it in operation in October 2019, what a sight to behold!
Love the Big Boy 4014
I was surprised to stop at a rail crossing here in Minnesota early this summer only to have this very train go by. Big Boy 4014!
Wow, what a lucky break... I mean, if you are going to be stopped at a grade crossing, this is maybe the best thing to see go by! :-)
@@Railfandepot I had no clue and as a big rail fan this was certainly a treat! Then I went home and googled it and found out it was traveling all over as a celebration of an anniversary of the trans continental RR. I agree, very lucky!
as a kid growing up in East San Gabriel valley i always visited the giant rail cars at LA County Fair. sad to see it leave there but so glad she is now running the rails throughout the country again. just wish she could make a return visit through So Cal.
I'm proud to be a Union Pacific employee!!
They have put a lot of time, money and other resources into their steam program!! It looks good on them!
Is there any chance they'll com east to New Jersey? I caught the UP SD70Ace #1943 in Rutherford, NJ last year by chance without expecting it.
@@wolfgang548 it depends, they're trying to just run it on UP lines
That is what I hear too. But... that could include Chicago or St. Louis!
I wonder what route Big Boys took as they traveled west from the ALCO plant in Schenectady N.Y.?
There is one in a park in Nebraska that needs to be but back in service. Its in a park just off the main tracks. I would love to see it restored.
My understanding is that UP looked at that one for restoration and while it looks good (and a cosmetic restoration would be nice), the weather had taken too much of a toll on her moving parts.
My brother worked for S.P and U.P. a total of 52 years in Oakland Ca. My self I love 4014. When I was a kid my brothers took me in the cap or a engine let me move the engine. I dove truck for a liveing for 48 years .thank you for this.
Driving a locomotive is a bit different than a truck, isn't it? I am not saying harder, or easier... just way different! :-) Thanks for watching. -DeAnn
I am very excited to travel to St. Paul Minnesota tomorrow with my nephew to take the tour while it is in town! Came back and watched this video again in anticipation!
DeAnn here... I am jealous!! Here is another video about 4014 you might like: ua-cam.com/video/2Ue90pSGUYM/v-deo.html
I remember, coming across 4014 by accident. I was visiting a Train Show at the Pomona Fairplex and I would visit the Rail giants museum whenever we were there. Only by chance was 4014 being towed across the parking lot, my dad and I were the only people watching that morning. I was hoping there was someone who documented this, because we did not take any photos or video for some reason. I thank you. 🙏🏻
Greatest PR move EVER! I wasn't a train enthusiast until I came across the Big Boy videos on UA-cam. I've never been on a train in my 60 years! I'm MUST ride on this train on its next trip through Texas in 2022.
I agree. How can you not LOVE this locomotive. It's got power and a great story too. Thanks for watching! -DeAnn
Over the years I would go to the museum to see the Big Boy, sometimes we take things for granted till it's gone. Glad it went to a good home as she needed a lot of TLC. THANKS FOR POSTING
Thank you for watching, Mike. 4014 sure got the TLC it needed!! -DeAnn
When I was a young boy in the 1950's we had the Santa Fe 5000 making steam from Lubbock to Clovis by our farm then to Amarillo. Hopefully this one of a kind prototype will someday have a home under cover. I can still remember the "Madam Queen" making the 100 + mile strait steady grade across the High Plains. It is strange that no one took pictures of this every day event that lasted over a million miles.
It’s so cool to see this and see the finished product they brought this beast back to life
I have been able to see Big Boys 4018, and the once oil burning 4005. These two were huge. The poor 4018 was sitting outside in the elements in Frisco Texas, while the 4005 was kept safe inside the forney transportation museum in Denver. Sadly, the 4005’s original ALCO plate was stolen, by burglars...
I didn't know that about the builders plate - that is sad.
A massive undertaking and a great video. Thank you RailGiants for relinquishing 4014 for restoration and operation.
Indeed, RailGiants made a sacrifice toward the greater good here! -Tim
This week she has taken her first breaths in 60 years.
My real name is Mike. My UA-cam name is the only combination I could find for my nickname Wizard. I remember leaving New York City around 1956 when I was 2 years old on a train pulled by a steam engine to Cleveland when my parents went to visit my grandparents. I vividly remember the engine. I've been a railfan ever since. I'm so amazed by the Big Boy, I bought an HO Rivarossi Big Boy many years ago for around $250 at a hobby shop. I've been trying to keep track of the restoration of the 4014 ever since I first saw that it left California headed to Cheyenne. I love steam engines as they are one of the most complex machines ever made by humans and I'm so happy to see so many restored and put back on the rails. Here in Ohio, we have the Ohio Central that operated #1551 steam engine for excursions down in Sugarcreek, Ohio that I had taken my family to ride on a few years ago. Unfortunately, they no longer provide the excursions. Thank you for your video and your interest in steam engines. Yes, I subscribed and hit the bell.
Hello Mike! Sounds like you have great memories of being around trains all your life. When I was a teen, I lusted after the Rivarossi Big Boy! But, it was out of my reach because of the price.
As an ex rail accident investigator, I am not a huge fan of old steam locos operating on main running lines, especially in between other normal timetabled trains, (many reasons for that), but I have to admit I admire those who restore them and keep them running for nostalgia and history. And having this attractive lady doing part of the narrative is a pleasant change as well. Great video all the same.
America. You should be so proud of this. Well done.
This comes from a time when men built fire-breathing dragons!
Yay babe I'll I bet England flock around lengend of American style train especially this one.🇺🇸😊
Darn proud, too! 🇺🇸
Thank you for the video!
Thank you for the comments: ;-) And for watching! -DeAnn
Thumbs up for UP to take interest in their past.., especially enough to restore this beast!
Oh yes, huge props to UP for doing this and doing it right!
Thanks again for all the great work you do
My pleasure! And, I thank you for the note!! -DeAnn
Awesome! Thanks!
My father who passed away two years ago loved the old steam engines, and would tell me stories about when he was a boy in the 50's and would hear the steam trains going through near where my Grandparents house use to be late at night and he would would listen to their whistles and their sounds as they passed through... He was the one who got me interested in model railroading as a kid. and I still have my steam train which still runs around the base of the Christmas tree every year.... My father would had loved to seen this old engine back in service. as would I. it would be nice to see and hear some steamers running around again. I think that's why I like England so much as they still use their steamers. just wish we here in America did too. Thank you for posting this video. It was not only was a joy to watch. but it brought back allot of memories of my father, his stories, and our time of running trains together....
Sounds like your father was a real lover of the steam era! Old trains, new trains, steam trains, diesel trains, bullet trains... all trains... we love 'em! :-)
@@Railfandepot oh yes he loved the old steamers, when he couldn't sleep I would even put on a cd of steam whistles to try to help him fall to sleep. but we had diesels that we ran on the layout too. I still even have an old diesel that is a lionel engine my father had bought back in the 50's. it sits on the shelf, but it's here.
@@cjdavis2684 That's a good way to remember your dad! 🚂

The 4014 has been restored to operational service and has traveled throughout the western and Midwestern USA, I wonder where the 4014 will travel to for it's excursion journeys in 2022.
If 4014 gets to travel this year, it will be going to Roseville and then Portland and Boise. - DeAnn
Looks like they're laying giant pieces of Atlas Snap Track across the parking lot.
Yep. I'll bet Atlas would have loved to sell them that track! 😆

I for one am *excited*!
For all those noting that this is not breaking news... This is just the first of three (or more) videos we have coming on the Big Boy - including a look way back at her service days and an update from 2019. So, we started at the beginning of her current saga. Not everyone is the up-to-date-railfan that many of us are... this video is for those people, and there are a lot of them, that are just now, or will soon become, aware of the Big Boy's unveiling... they may want to know more about how it got to Cheyenne. We didn't mean to claim that this was "breaking news". :-)
Railfan Depot , Thank you for video . I saw the date and was confused but watched and loved your video any way . There was a Big boy in a park next to a shopping plaza that I stood next to and have photos of somewhere upstairs . Those million pound monsters are huge if you stand right there next to them . The U.P shops could be seen across the road 1/2 mile away from the huge loco while I was in Wyoming . These things are awesomely huge , great filming with your slightly older video .
@@markcantemail8018 Thank you for the note. This is the first of a three part series we are doing prior to the May unveiling of 4014, so we thought we'd start at the beginning. :-) I now know to be more clear on the dates. :-) Even so, as you say, it sure is interesting!!
Date was very clear , it caught my eye and I dove right into your Deluxe Video . You did a Great job filming and showing us something very important .
Big Boy wasn't the most powerful the triplex was
@@kallumproductions3498 Do you have power figures for the Triplexes (either of 2 types -- 1 for the Virginian Railway and 1 for the Erie Railroad)? It sounds like while they had plenty of tractive effort (possibly exceeding Big Boy), they didn't have so much power and thus could only run at very low speeds -- which was not totally unsuited for their intended purpose as banking locomotives in the days before Super Power. The Virginian's Triplex was rebuilt into 2 more conventional locomotives after a short time in service, but the Erie Railroad's Triplexes persisted quite a bit longer (which makes me wonder if anybody ever got film footage of them -- at a brief search, I found videos, but they seem to be either composed of stills, or videos of models).
I have a 4014 hat and it is a cool locomotive
It is a VERY cool locomotive! I can not wait to see it running on the mainline!! - DeAnn
How could 31 people thumbs down this? Must be environmentalists who don't want to see the Big Boy belching smoke again.
Its oil fired now
@@435now I know it was converted just like #844. I've been keeping track since it left Pomona, CA like 5 years ago. They decided to go for oil as a source of fuel, as it's much more efficient to handle and cleaner than coal. Coal supplies are also more difficult to have at hand when needed.
I think a few people really, really, really object to DeAnn using "her" instead of "he"... that may have led to some down votes... But that "he or she" discussion is an interesting one. Traditionally large machines have been called "she" or "her". For instance the Sir Nigel Gresley, a steam engine running in the United Kingdom, certainly has a male name but is always referred to as a her. 7 mins in for that big turbo diesel sound :o)
I always wondered why they didn’t aquire the big boy at the forney museum in Denver, it’s much closer and in great shape, it’s stored indoors
Maybe the Forney did want to give up what has to be a prize museum piece and attraction. I know they did not use the Big Boy already in Cheyenne, on display there, because weather had taken a toll on the working parts.
It's almost done and ready to roll
Yes, I spoke to UP public relations a few weeks ago and they were really pushing hard to get done early to they could test it properly before the big public unveiling!

The hell, that "Last commuter train" looks like it was pulled by a former GO Transit F59PH
It is a leased engine from RRBX who, yes, did purchase an ex- GO Transit locomotive and converted it to 480 volts.

1000 subscriber. Because, trains...
Re the introduction to the video. The 2-6-6-6 Built of for the C&O and the Virginian Railroad reveled the Big Boy and by some accounts even surpassed it.
Yes, depending on the metric used you could argue either are the biggest... But, you have to admit, in the mind of the public the Big Boy beats the Allegheny.
If steam was brought back into the picture, it would employ more people.if we applied our knowledge to solving problems, we would have clean burning steam engines. Instead we apply our knowledge too make maximum profit. This is detrimental to humanity. As for the people that the industrialist put out of work, well they get blamed for the decline of our nation. If there were any empathy at all in this country there would not be any homeless in America. But empathy like the steam engine have become increasingly rare.
I would love put clean burning steam on my railroad one-day
I see this is over two years ago, when are they going to start a fire in that box, and head to my neck of the woods!!!!
No definite dates yet, but UP has said they will be out this summer!! Yay! -DeAnn

is this how engineers play with toy trains?
BIG toy trains. 😀
Nothing to see here, just towing a massive steam locomotive across the parking lot at Walmart.
Was that loader pulling that thing all by its self!?
Yes, the running gear was free, and so no friction there, and once you get the behemoth moving, it just keeps moving.
That makes sense! Thank you!
Actually 4005's oil conversion was not a success. It unevenly heated the Bunker C heavy fuel oil and was converted back to coal less than a year later.
Correct. In fact, it was only tried because of a coal strike at the time. Interestingly, the restored to operation Big Boy 4014 is now running on oil. Thanks for watching! -DeAnn

You might want to change the title from saying “parking on” to “parking lot”
Yeah that is obviously, I hope, an error. UA-cam gets grumpy if we change the title. But that is embarrassing, it needs to be changed. It should be "parking LOT on the..." We have since changed the title.
Now the SP has to restore one of there AC-12 cab forwards and the N&W with 2156 and the giants will the reign supreme once again
Michael Carter SP doesn’t exist anymore dude
Hayden Northcutt I nominally agree, to the casual person it doesn’t. What you know as UP now, is actually SP. SP bought UP, and changed names to UP, not the other way around.
Wait. I thought 4005 was converted back to burning coal because it caused uneven heating in the firebox.
Why the enhanced police though? Is it that big of a security risk?
I don't think it was because of a security risk. I think at the spots where there were cords, they were used for crowd control, and railroad police (maybe local police too) did block off some road crossings.
The Mallard , 124 MPH without the torque of course. Meh water off a ducks back. Even big meant something in those days.
124mph going down hill. Only 95mph tops on level track. Make it do another run, but without cheating this time.

what type of whistle does 4014 have???
I am not a whistle expert, but I believe the Big Boy (as well as the Challenger) use the Hancock Long-Bell 3-Chime Whistle.
@@Railfandepot that's correct, 4014 has a Hancock 3-chime whistle, the same type that 844 and 3985 have. Though only 3985 still has its original whistle as both 844 and 4014 have had their whistles swapped over the years. Though by some miracle, the very whistle 4014 used to wear back in the 40s & 50s ended up in a private collection and was obtained by UP steam program manager Ed Dickens a few years ago, and is now being used on the 844. It is possible that someday 4014 might get its original whistle back.

@@Cohunnamatta I think the Pentrex title may be a bit misleading... just because of the passage of time since they made this DVD. As for fair use, we have the permission from Pentrex - and any other producer we feature. Some say no, most say yes. :-)
Some real breaking news here 🙄
Hello, this is not meant to be breaking news... rather for those who are just now learning that 4014 will be running this year, it is a look at how the process started. We hope to have some actual "breaking news" in a couple of weeks... along with some footage of 4014 when she was running in revenue service.... but for now, this is of interest to people who do not keep up on all things steam like us railfans do.
