I literally do all of these (i do Barbell cheat rows instead of BB) 1-3 times a week and have my first Dan in Judo. I always tell guys they NEED to get in the gym if they want to progress and win tournaments. It also helps when you're a super Heavyweight like I am and can really get those strength numbers high without worrying as much about bodyweight. I currently compete at 270-275 lbs at 6'6 in height, and being strong helps SO much against other guys that heavy, but not quite as strong.
Great video and everything on point. Cheers. I got back doing Judo after 10 years, my technique is still good but the difference of power with others in my dojo is very noticeable in randori. I started hitting the gym just because of that. A month in and I feel the difference already.
Great list, Daire; thanks! I'm curious where you'd put pullups? Rows might be more biomechanically similar to parts of throwing movements, but pullups definitely have more of that "ultimate upper body strength exercise" that you mentioned wrt bench press.
Thanks for all the videos! What do you guys think of weighted push-ups instead of bench press? I do most of my training in my garage and have a good set-up - parallettes, box, dip-belt just below the scaps with plates allowing small increments. Is there something I’m missing compared to bench press? I’m not trying to be different, it’s just that a suitable safe bench press setup would take up space and cost. (I would want a rack to catch a failed rep). I do sometimes consider investing! Many thanks 🙏
You put a dip belt around your back and then elevate yourself on chairs or something? I want to start doing weighted pushups but most weight vests don’t go heavy. IMO weighted deficit pushups are better in theory because you can get more rom. Only reason I’ve been using bench is because I haven’t thought of a good way to set up the pushups.
@@Vanillabean2check out fitnessfaq for the setup, but the idea is to put a belt on your upper back. You can also put it on your lumbar region, but the lever arm is shortened, meaning you will need more weight for the same effect, and it encourages more back hyperextension as you approach failure
Besides single arm cheater row. Are there any good dumbbell exercises for judo? Are snatches a good exercise for judo? What about weighted pull/chin-ups and weighted dips? Are weighted hip thrust a good judo exercise?
I should be doing engineering school papers and not drool at the recent upload's thumbnail. This is a tough list for having only five. Like in my experience you really want something that has side delt focus as well like military press, the amount of lifting arms to unbalance the opponent is just ridiculous and you're almost certain to get sore side delts from judo if you haven't specifically trained them. I used to do those single arm cheat rows as warm up for pullups, worked pretty nicely when you don't have a way to warm up with less than bodyweight in pullups. I was also thinking how if I could do only one exercise at the gym while doing judo, I'd choose high bar back squats 100% of the time (also because I enjoy them). And I've said it before, but learning cleans made a big difference in how comfortable I was to move to positions and be stable and strong anyway.
Very interesting advice on power training for a grappling sport. Thank you! Also, may I point out that there is no such thing as a "judoko"? Sorry to be pedantic, but it's "judoka" (柔道家 ; じゅうどうか). To get the pronunciation approximately correct, say it like "jew-dough-car" (but don't say the "r" at the end).

GREAT TRAINING INSTRUCTIONS , WELL SAID BY BOTH OF YOU.
Rack pulls and quarter deadlift were my go to for slamming opponents when I got a side or rear body lock.
Genuinely interested in knowing why OHP does not make the list :D
Same
They made a video on why they think benching is better than the ohp for athletes
Can we get a video on fixing shoulder imbalance in the snatch?
would you do deadlifts and back squat in the same workout?

Hell yeah I do 4/5. I'm gonna pull guard as explosively as I can
Thanks for all the videos!

@@rundymc thanks I’ll have a look
Hi Sika, what about grip, hand development? So that you can hold and pull better with your hands?
Besides single arm cheater row. Are there any good dumbbell exercises for judo?

Are weighted hip thrust a good judo exercise?
Should the athletes do hook grip?

Its their irish pronunciation. They also pronounce Shohei Ono as "Onoshei"
