YES! Love to see another judo episode. You guys really deliver with the judo content. It's so good if people see how judokas should actually train at the gym for judo. The more videos like this there are, the more likely they're gonna see one and learn and spread the information. None of those crazy "judo like" exercises or only circuits or something at the gym. I've noticed one conditioning circuit day is pretty common for judokas just to not tax their system with all heavy gym days.
I would claim the high bar squat with weightlifting shoes is perfect for judo athletes, there are so many turn throws where you need to squat your hips lower than your opponent and keep yourself relatively upright and in balance/control, but also be able to explode the hip up and lean forwards. Recently I've advocated snatch balance to my instructor just because so many university students (my club is a university student club) have trouble being strong and in balance in squat, especially dropping quick. Snatch balance teaches you exactly that quick relaxation and drop under the bar, but a strong catch position. For example morote seoi nage is a real struggle to people initially, they either can't get the hips low, they can't get the hip low quick enough or they fall forwards under the weight. And another really big is something like single leg rdl, it's so difficult to do osoto gari or uchi mata type of movements if you can't stay stable on one foot and move in space. Many uni students starting judo are almost afraid to tilt their torso or swing their leg in a big motion. The heavy dumbbell rows are also killer, if someone smacks your neck with a heavy arm and your hip shoots back, you'll find yourself lying on the tatami. You just need that strength to stay upright for balance. And core work, I've been thinking of med ball throws because you need so much rotational power to finish the throws in convincing fashion. And let's be fair, the stronger and more conditioned you are, the less the actual judo practice will tax you. And the better your technique in judo becomes, the less strength you need to use in judo practice. So you can work your gym and judo more efficiently together.
I was a bit puzzled about the dumbbell clean/snatch, but then I compared it to what I'm doing on tatami: a lot of kuzushi (off-balancing) is lifting your elbows/arms and pulling to or past you. I've had shoulders so exhausted from just simple uchikomi (doing the shape of the throw without finishing it) practice because you lift them so much. There are good videos of Japanese practice sessions where they just do 1000 reps of uchikomi, demonstrates that well. And it's almost always accompanied with a slight knee bend, very upright squat motion. And in general, the lower you can get, the more likely your opponent is already coming over your back in turn throws. When he's in the catch position of the dumbbell snatch, the freeze frame looks a lot like sode tsurikomi goshi, or tsurikomi goshi, where you hold your opponents sleeve in straight arm towards the sky while bending knees to get your hip lower than theirs. And in many of the turn throws you're slightly on your toes. If you were on your heels, your balance would be too far behind and the opponent could pull you back and stick to their feet instead of being pulled over you, you wouldn't have any motion forwards left without pulling with your arms which are kinda weak in comparison to balance play. I assume it's also loading the spring system of feet for powerful release. I'm not sure if that's really reasonable to have in the gym practice, I feel like it'd be better to just do the full feet on the ground at the gym.
The battle ropes were funny/clever because he was doing the sideways leg sweep motion at the same time (like de ashi barai/harai). Judokas are doing those everywhere, some even at the bus stop or cooking. I would love to see him keeping the distance between his feet in the sideways shuffles, that'd be so relevant to judo. Not touching the feet together that is, even when moving fast. His dashing does kind of resemble that sideways shuffle of judo movement though. That's the way you get your legs swept in a fraction of a second if your feet touch together. Maybe the rope ladder exercise would be great for judo too, I've wanted to try that for a while now.
You guys are just dropping so many gold nuggets for judokas in a single video, giving food for thought on top of just exercise examples. If you want to check on some of those throw techniques to compare the positions required, international judo federation has a whole video library on techniques at judo.ijf.org.
Maruyama is a fantastic judoka. No wonder the first clip was his uchimata, certainly thought to be one of the best uchimatas especially now that Kosei Inoue and Shohei Ono aren't in the game anymore. And the most recent judo championship tournaments have been great in terms of entertainment, people were actually throwing each other left, right and center. Massive fan of this s&c video. Maybe in the future it'd be really interesting to learn how to program power and strength barbell exercise sets for judo/combat sports or just power + strength goal in general. Like would you do a couple of sets of power work at like 60% 1RM until you slow down and then do a top set or some heavy singles at maybe 3RM talking for example about squat?
Sorry about a wall of text! Got pretty excited about the video!

It is pretty cool to see that a lot of the movements I've been doing since 2020 like those power rows and dumbbell snatches/high-pulls to build my strength when training like a powerlifter was no longer an option due to all the gyms being shutdown because of the lockdowns until 2022 are exercises used by high level Judo athletes.

Maybe a somewhat niche sport, but what do you guys expect the strength and conditioning to look like for a sport like fencing? I used to do HEMA and we had a paucity of S&C, mostly just sparring.

judo demonstrates what all martial arts need to legitimise them; a uniform syllabus for grading, uniform rules of competition, drug testing and an international governing body that helps all nations with a structure for the aforementioned. If they could just ditch the annual world championship, go back to every 2 or better yet 4 years, allow single leg attacks in competition…. i can dream

Here I'll settle the high bar, low bar argument. Capt. Kirk Karwoski Squatted 805 Freedom Units x 5 reps in his Short Shorts and Afterwards he Chugged 5 Sinatra Pours of Old No. 7, or to you Foreigners J.D. Tennessee Whiskey. Enough Said, Amen. 🇺🇲🥃❤
