I came into the movie very much in the “ugh did anyone ask for this, why is this a thing, this is gonna be awful” mindset. I’ve never been more happy to be proven wrong. This film was an utter delight!
It's in its own story. It's setting up a new Willy Wonka that'll differ from the Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp versions. This film's universe is like a fusion of both films' worlds.
This movie is ridiculously sweet (pun not intended) and way more charming than anyone could expect. Went in expecting a soulless cash grab but you can feel the love put into every aspect of it. Incredible feel-good movie. The songs are some earworms too And the guys from Horrible Histories are in it! Its what made me happiest of all in the theatre
My dad saw the original Willy Wonka movie in the 70s when he was 9 years old. Him and I went to see this movie, and he loved it. He’s a notoriously hard person to please, and it was over feel good experience
I don't understand why some people were upset that this was a musical. when literally the other 2 willy wonka movies were also a musical and claim to love it. No sense to me at all.
I think the reason the music is so good isn't because of the skills of the singer, it's because the song is just fun. It's like 90s Disney animated films. The characters didn't have to be great singers, they just had to have fun singing.
Your revelation of "It's 2024, y'all" was adorable. As always, enjoyed your reaction, and now I'm definitely going to watch this movie (although you should watch the Gene Wilder original, and hopefully react to that as well).
I see this movie as a prequel to the idea of Willy Wonka hints the references to both the movies before it and cause his Charlie could be entirely different
I love how theres just 5 seconds between, "Maybe this is a different universe and this wonka does not become someone who is all alone in his factory " To "I can see how he very quickly learned to despise humanity" 😂😂😂😂😂
As soon as I heard Crowley I thought of Downton Abbey first (especially since Jim Carter is in this who played the head butler in this). I almost forgot about Good Omens since I recently binged DA for the first time and Good Omens was months ago and I really liked the 2nd season way less than the first one (which I enjoyed even more than the book).
The person who made the songs for this movie, Neil Hannon, is actually one of my favorite musicians of all time!!! I highly recommend checking out his band, The Divine Comedy, if you liked the music here. It's an entire thirty year catalogue and each era is a gorgeous listen-through.
Watched the John Oliver feature on chocolate a coupla months ago, where the people in Africa who raise cacao have never tasted chocolate -- because they can't afford it. 😯
Maybe it’s just me, but I can easily see this optimistic eccentric Willy becoming the bitter eccentric in the 2006 movie that we see. Life is tough and wears you down. Even more reasons why he connected so good with Charlie who reminded him of himself at that age. Also, its easy to imagine that after Willy´s mum passed away he had to move to his strict dentist father.
Before watching this, I heard so many negatives about it that I had low expectations when the digital version came out. I was pleasantly surprised at how good this movie/musical really is and some of the songs are so catchy. This is an 8 out of 10 for me and I'm so glad that you loved it Jess.
Can I ask - The movie has an 82 critic rating and 91 audience rating on RT and over 7 on imdb, and I've only heard great things about it. But both the video and you hear seem to be referring to a backlash. Where did this backlash happen, since I've only experience relatively universal acclaim of this movie (though I am in the UK).
I think the backlash was mostly before the premiere. A lot of people were either not interested in another Willy Wonka movie or didn't like the trailer or didn't like the idea of Chalamet playing Wonka, etc. I feel like many of those people were actually pleasantly surprised by the final product.
Girl I love your vids so much, I can relate how you much you love Olivia Colman cause I was also freaking out when she appeared 😭 and also the fact that your also on your good omens fase even after months after the second season, cause...same I wonder if you watched Broadchurch with Olivia AND David, the best of both worlds
I didn't expected you to have the same reaction as me when nardoles actor showed up and when Williy said Geronimo, doctor who is eating our minds up 😭 And the Around the world in 80 days reference? Yes 😭, That girl needs a Fogg in her life (Idk if you noticed but she appeared in doctor who, she was in a new years special of 13th's season, she was being controlled by a Dalek)
The dude from Love Actually is Rowan Atkinson, if you really wanna laugh, check out his series Mr. Bean, there is nothing better. It ran for one season, then an animated series, and finally two movies.
I’m glad to be apart of the population that can happily enjoy a musical 😂 when people call it a surprise or not (lol) I have yet to experience a musical that I’ve walked away thinking ‘I wish I never saw that’😂😂
I'm the person that watched the trailer when it dropped months ago and was like, "Hugh Grant as an Oompa Loompa is worth my entire movie ticket!" lmao, I'll watch that man in anything. (to be fair I also live in a town where we have an independently run theater that has inexpensive ticket prices no matter the time of day so. take that as you will) But I am also very much a fan of whimsy and charm, and this movie delivered.
i loved this movie. music was fun, colours were vibrant. and it leaned into the whimsy of the source material and theatricality of the musicals without hesitation.
I'm glad that they went through route of not making this a prequel with so many Easter eggs to the original story, and instead put all the focus on telling actually telling a standalone story. And I do buy the idea that this is a Wonka variant that lives in alternate universe.
Thank you for watching this. I enjoyed it. I loved the original one with Gene Wilder. I think Olivia Colman would perfect for the role of Miss. Hannigan in Annie. Plus I loved the Amazon series, “Good Omens.” I adored the novel
This movie did an excellent job paying homage to both the '71 and '05 films while still very much doing its own thing. It's just such a good, honest, fun family film. I really loved it.
Tbh it still baffles me that people are mad this is a musical, did they not watch the first 2 adaptions??? That's like getting angry at a gremlins sequel for having gremlins
Still playing in theaters here so I caught it Sunday. Found it very charming, completely agree that the weight stuff with the chief of police was the biggest fumble. If you haven't seen the Paddington movies from the same director you absolutely need to.
I didn’t want to see this movie originally but I went because my girlfriend wanted to see it and we saw it twice each time I liked it more and more. I don’t understand the hate in my country this movie is still in cinemas so clearly audiences here love it
I am unable to watch anything without adding my own character/ storyline. For Wonka, It starts in the flashback scene with Wonka and his mother. I replaced the line " When you do share chocolate with the world I'll be right there beside you," to "We'll be right there beside you," as she clinches her stomach. We then hear Willie talk about his mother's passing and how she took his little sister with her before he got to meet her. Throughout the movie, a little girl shows up next to him in all of Willy's day dreams and dance numbers. In the ending scene, when Willie is sitting on the steps of the cathedral, the little girl shows up and asks to sit next to him. Suddenly she sees her mother and shouts, "Mama!" And runs into her mother's. When Willie looks up, he sees that the girl runs to HIS mother. They smile and wave at him as he can do nothing but smile and wave back with tears in his eyes. As he blinks the tears out of his eyes, his mother and sister disappear. In the scene where Noodle reunites with her mother and Wonka sings pure imagination, it mirrors the scene with his mother and sister just a moment before
You said "what if we have a boy giraffe." In the story it's a female, but I've worked with giraffe and unfortunately they did model the head of a male giraffe for this movie. It's the curse of an animal keeper who loves movies, any time there's a cgi animal it will most likely be wrong on some detail.
Not to mention that she wouldn't have any milk if there isn't a baby giraffe present. (And a male who sired said baby giraffe, she wouldn't just be all alone in the zoo lactating for the funsies - or in case an eccentric chocolate maker really needed her milk 🤷🏻♀️)
I love this movie, it's so sweet and whimsical and heartfelt :) The main thing I didn't appreciate, as you mentioned, was the weight jokes, but otherwise I thought it was great and that the entire cast were fantastic. I'm glad you enjoyed it! :) Also I totally agree with you in regard's to Willy's outfits, they're awesome XD
Willy Wonka has always been a musical. Even the depp movie. While this one was more like a modern Broadway musical, the original was a classic musical, they all have the same ammount of songs. Which is 11. I never understood the backlash. Nothings changed. People forget about songs like "The candy man" and "Cheer up Charlie" those are musical numbers. Depps was just crazy, but still had a musical tone.
I am definitely connected to the 2005 so I was initially nervous to watch this but since Timothee is my favourite Actor ever !! So I definitely had to watch and I loveeeed it!
Ok first of all, your outfit is giving Miss Frizzle of Magic School Bus fame, which is fantastic because Miss Frizzle is awesome. Second, i really loved this movie. I was skeptical because i grew up on the OG, (I'm 24) and while i love the Johnny Depp version, the OG will always have a special place in my heart. I thought this was a beautifully done prequel that captured the joy and fun of Wonka. Also, its so funny that people were upset that this was a musical when BOTH the OG and 05 movies are also musicals, its just the Oompa Loompas singing the entire time, not multiple characters.
I’m glad you enjoyed ‘Wonka’, I loved it too. You mentioned seeing the 2005 film ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, ‘Wonka’ is a prequel to the 1971 film ‘Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory’- have you seen that movie?
The original Willy Wonka was a musical and I expect nothing less from this movie, not quite sure why everyone was so surprised by that when seeing the movie 🤷🏻♂️
I'm not sure how people were expecting it not to have musical numbers. The original (Gene Wilder version, I haven't seen the remake) was as musical as this one was.
I didn't know it was a musical and i wasn't really interested i the prequel but my sister wanted to see it so we went to the cinema and enjoyed it more than i expected
Honestly feel you should check out BBC Ghosts, Matthew Baynton (Fickelgruber) is part of the cast/team that created it and feel you would really enjoy it. In fact The Zoo security guard (Simon Farnaby) and Barbara (Charlotte Richie) are also in it.
Off topic, but coming to your previous video of 2023 films you watched, you mentioned PAST LIVES, which is a damn good movie. I also recommend a Tamil-language Indian movie titled 96 (2018) which has a similar plot to PAST LIVES.
There's this UA-camr, Kylegordanisgreat I do enjoy Timothee's version of Wonka, but there's something about it, that makes me feel like he might be a fan of said UA-camr, the mannerisms are a bit similar.
From the sounds of it you've only see the remake by Tim Burton with Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka; there is an ealier movie from the '70s with Gene Wilder as Wonka
I’m so glad you saw this movie. I loved it as well. But I had to point out, have you ever seen Jessii vee? Cause you look so much like her if she wore glasses all the time.
NGL, I would eat all those chocolates in about two weeks. I also saw Flamingos on my trip to Florida but none were flying....and Capitalism changed that man.
When business profits become your motivation, a conscience goes to the backburner. Also, those flamingos could still fly, they just would rather not. They're huge birds, after all. Flying takes a ton of energy for them. 😂
hey i love ur vids!! just wanted to ask if you’ve seen the show fleabag or not, bc if you haven’t i’d love to see your reaction to it! i think it’s right up ur alley (+ olivia colman plays in it). if you have seen it i’d love to hear your thoughts though. anyway love your reactions keep it up!
I'm sorry. Rowan Atkinson is "that guy from Love Actually"? 😅 'Mr Bean'! 'Johnny English'! 'Blackadder'! Maybe these are too culturally British. 'The Lion King' or 'The Scooby Doo Movie' would be more internationally known films for our generation, I suppose. Also, 'The Witches'. I recommend that. As for the rest of the cast, they're almost all people you would recognise if you lived in the UK, but might be obscure otherwise. I feel like Leprechaun traps must be an American thing(?). I've never heard of that. I haven't seen 'Annie' but I felt like this film was very classic musical in its style of songs, very 'Paddington' in its style of humour, and a combination in its happy-go-lucky whimsy. Loved it. I was also not expecting a musical (though I always avoid trailers so I didn't know what to expect), but I'm not sure why that would bother so many people. It was delightful.
Can you react to "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron"? It's a story about a strong, beautiful horse with a spirit that can never be broken. I cry every time i watch it! It's a INCREDIBLE film, and the songs are so cool! But it's not a musical and the animals can't talk. 😭💔🔥
I've been on the fence about checking this out. The clips of Hugh Grant as Oompa Loompa were a tremendous turn-off. Maybe when in the right mood sometime . . . Kindergarten art teacher is the perfect descriptor for that outfit! And I love it! Fun video, Jess!
Timothée Chalamet brings a lot of energy, innocent charm, kindness, and even comedy to the role of a young Willy Wonka.
I never understood the hate for this movie being a musical. Like, both the original and the remake were musicals so idk what people were expecting
I dont understand how people didnt expect this to be a musical.....they're all musicals.
I've never even watched the original but doesn't it have at LEAST one song for each child that gets eliminated? Lmao
I know right. Heck, the book is a musical, you just have to make the tune yourself. 😂
I’m so happy to know I wasn’t the only Good Omens obsessed person freaking out about the “Tickety-boo” line 😭
no fr!!!! the mini aziraphale that lives in my brain rent-free was SCREAMING lol
I came into the movie very much in the “ugh did anyone ask for this, why is this a thing, this is gonna be awful” mindset. I’ve never been more happy to be proven wrong. This film was an utter delight!
i'd only seen negative comments about it, so i'm really glad it turned out like this!!
Timothee did such a great job in this movie and the actress that played Noodle is adorable!
yes!! she was so talented, too!
I think this is the first time I've ever seen someone refer to Rowan Atkinson as "the guy from Love Actually".
i only just saw that film so it was top of mind 😂
@@tabiclemmons3493the faces he make when he eats the chocolate kill me 😆🤣 “I am a sinner and I’ve sold my soul for 30 pieces of chocolate haha”
Yeah, that surprised me!
Wonka is such a top tier adaptation and no one can convince me otherwise
It's in its own story. It's setting up a new Willy Wonka that'll differ from the Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp versions. This film's universe is like a fusion of both films' worlds.
Thank you!!!! 🎉
This movie is ridiculously sweet (pun not intended) and way more charming than anyone could expect. Went in expecting a soulless cash grab but you can feel the love put into every aspect of it. Incredible feel-good movie.
The songs are some earworms too
And the guys from Horrible Histories are in it! Its what made me happiest of all in the theatre
My dad saw the original Willy Wonka movie in the 70s when he was 9 years old. Him and I went to see this movie, and he loved it. He’s a notoriously hard person to please, and it was over feel good experience
17:48 "Somebody took what would you do for a Klondike bar a little too seriously"
- Man I love your commentary
Saw this movie a couple days ago and "A World of Your Own" is still stuck in my head
it's such a good song!!!!
I don't understand why some people were upset that this was a musical. when literally the other 2 willy wonka movies were also a musical and claim to love it. No sense to me at all.
I surprised some people didnt expect a musical considering both previous versions were musicals

Timothee Chalamet actually got a Golden Globe nomination for this but lost to Paul Giamatti for THE HOLDOVERS.
I haven't seen 'The Holdovers' yet. I've heard that it's good.
Your revelation of "It's 2024, y'all" was adorable.
As always, enjoyed your reaction, and now I'm definitely going to watch this movie (although you should watch the Gene Wilder original, and hopefully react to that as well).
The original will Wonka movie was basically a musical
I see this movie as a prequel to the idea of Willy Wonka hints the references to both the movies before it and cause his Charlie could be entirely different
I love how theres just 5 seconds between,
"Maybe this is a different universe and this wonka does not become someone who is all alone in his factory "
To
"I can see how he very quickly learned to despise humanity"
😂😂😂😂😂
Yeah

The people who look familiar are Nardole, Charles II from Horrible Histories, and Alan Johnson from Peep Show.
As a Dyslexic I can confirm they don't let you off fir not being able to read lol 😅
Didn't expect to like the movie as much as I did or even get emotional (*-* ) The Wonka nostalgia was hitting hard at the end.
I also did not know at all it would be a musical before watching, when he started singing I literally gasped lol

Also another little Doctor Who tie-in as he sang Song for Ten and Love Don’t Roam! But yeah same he’s my favorite dude 🥹
Watched the John Oliver feature on chocolate a coupla months ago, where the people in Africa who raise cacao have never tasted chocolate -- because they can't afford it. 😯

I’m glad to be apart of the population that can happily enjoy a musical 😂 when people call it a surprise or not (lol) I have yet to experience a musical that I’ve walked away thinking ‘I wish I never saw that’😂😂
No one
My mind : well there’s chocolate and there’s chocolate!!
YOU’VE NEVER HAD CHOCOLATE LIKE THISS
Your mention of leprechaun traps unlocked a memory. Mine were very well made. Used wooden boxes and snap locks.
I actually cried after watching this
The outfit is giving Rita Skeeter vibes from harry potter
the worst possible vibes but i do see it now that you've said it 😂😭
i loved this movie. music was fun, colours were vibrant. and it leaned into the whimsy of the source material and theatricality of the musicals without hesitation.
Timothee in this movie is giving “Worst guy you knew in high school absolutely devouring the lead role in the Spring Musical” energy
...why is this so specific and yet so accurate 😂😭
Jess, I love the vest and it's the perfect choice for this film, it reminds me of the one Gene Wilder wore in the original film.
I'm glad that they went through route of not making this a prequel with so many Easter eggs to the original story, and instead put all the focus on telling actually telling a standalone story.
And I do buy the idea that this is a Wonka variant that lives in alternate universe.
OH MY DARLING! Did you just call Rowan Atkinson, that guy from Love Actually??
Thank you for watching this. I enjoyed it. I loved the original one with Gene Wilder. I think Olivia Colman would perfect for the role of Miss. Hannigan in Annie. Plus I loved the Amazon series, “Good Omens.” I adored the novel
People forget all the Wonka movies are musicals.
This movie did an excellent job paying homage to both the '71 and '05 films while still very much doing its own thing. It's just such a good, honest, fun family film. I really loved it.
Guys, I THINK she likes Olivia Colman
I love this movie so much
Tbh it still baffles me that people are mad this is a musical, did they not watch the first 2 adaptions??? That's like getting angry at a gremlins sequel for having gremlins
I didn’t expect this movie to be as good as it was when I watched it the first time, love it🥰
I LOVE that green outfit! Okay I love green, but also cool outfit
Still playing in theaters here so I caught it Sunday. Found it very charming, completely agree that the weight stuff with the chief of police was the biggest fumble. If you haven't seen the Paddington movies from the same director you absolutely need to.
If people are complaining about this being a musical than they obviously never watched the other two lol.
I didn’t want to see this movie originally but I went because my girlfriend wanted to see it and we saw it twice each time I liked it more and more. I don’t understand the hate in my country this movie is still in cinemas so clearly audiences here love it

ahhh thanks!! 🥺
"Someone took 'What would you do for a Klondike Bar a little too seriously'" 🤣
How long have you been waiting to use _that_ one?
Yesss!! It was so good! Such good songs! Great video!!
I can't believe you said "that guy from Love, actually" and not Mr. Bean😂😂

Timothée is such an amazing Wonka, I enjoyed this film from start to finish
THIS MOVIE WAS SO GOOD. THE MUSIC IS ADDICTING
the soundtrack is on REPEAT tbh!!
The original Willy Wonka was a musical and I expect nothing less from this movie, not quite sure why everyone was so surprised by that when seeing the movie 🤷🏻♂️
Hopefully The Marvels is next Iman is the heart of the film
I’m not sure why people were confused about it being a musical. All of the Willy Wonka movies are technically musicals
I'm not sure how people were expecting it not to have musical numbers. The original (Gene Wilder version, I haven't seen the remake) was as musical as this one was.
Yes. The feeling I got was like Annie or the original version of Pete's Dragon.

Hearing 🎶 “Pure Imagination” in this version brought me back to my childhood.
14:48 she got that Jackie Tyler robe lol
Movie 7/10
Reaction 10/10
Me wanting chocolate 100/10
It's a prequel to the 70s movie. It's like Honest trailers said how he went from these to that? Welp, that's the sequel' problem
You really need to watch the original Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory, the one you have seen is the remake with Johnny Depp
Olivia Colman is my idol
There's this UA-camr, Kylegordanisgreat
I do enjoy Timothee's version of Wonka, but there's something about it, that makes me feel like he might be a fan of said UA-camr, the mannerisms are a bit similar.

I’m so glad you saw this movie. I loved it as well. But I had to point out, have you ever seen Jessii vee? Cause you look so much like her if she wore glasses all the time.
Seeing Mr Bean (Rowan Atkinson) in action again💖
Man, I love this movie
Hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
Hi Jess , I missed your reaction so much :) Very happy to enjoy your reaction to Wonka🍫 Have a great weekend , Come back soon.
I don't know how to feel about the idea of Willy Wonka getting the idea of unconscionable contracts from getting ripped off at the hostel 😐
literally i watched it for the 3rd time 🤌 it was so goood!!
It definitely isss a bop!!
hey i love ur vids!! just wanted to ask if you’ve seen the show fleabag or not, bc if you haven’t i’d love to see your reaction to it! i think it’s right up ur alley (+ olivia colman plays in it). if you have seen it i’d love to hear your thoughts though. anyway love your reactions keep it up!
I'm sorry. Rowan Atkinson is "that guy from Love Actually"? 😅
'Mr Bean'!
When Wonka dropped that last silver dollar, it’ll one day be picked up by Charlie in the original movie.
Hi Jess i'm so ready to see DUNE part 2 in theaters the book is good! :)
SCRUB SCRUB
Love actually?! He is Mr. Bean first and foremost!
I've been on the fence about checking this out. The clips of Hugh Grant as Oompa Loompa were a tremendous turn-off. Maybe when in the right mood sometime . . .
Kindergarten art teacher is the perfect descriptor for that outfit! And I love it! Fun video, Jess!
thanks! i hope you enjoy it if/when you watch the movie :)
