Thank you for recognizing Auli’i and how great she was here. I also really like this Janis and I’m happy they fixed the (unintentional) queerbaiting from the original.
When my siblings and I saw this at the cinema with our friends, there was only 2 other people watching. So as much as I felt the urge to react as if it were a commentary, I held back. But I really liked it. Auli’i Cravalho as Janis got me speechless. And Damian singing the iCarly theme song in French, my jaw dropped. I was like “is that? No, right? Wait a minute! It is! Omg!”
As a French person, I add that the translation of ICarly theme song is exactly the kind of bad translation a teen student does when they used google translate instead of doing it themselves. And it makes it even funnier.
I loved Auli’i’s performance. It was a bit of a different interpretation of the character and she did it so well. Avantika was great also. I really hope both of them get more work in the future.
Regina feels like a MEANNGIRL in this movie compared to the first one 😭😭😭she’s actually scary and Renee Rapp delivered!!!! Those musical numbers like wtf!🔥🔥🔥

The staging of the songs from the Broadway show is consistently inventive, something that a surprising number of movie musicals still struggle with after all these years.
I think one of the reasons Chicago worked so well is that they tried less to make the musical numbers into real life and instead made them feel stagey. Overly trying to make musical numbers work in reality makes them stand out even more as unrealistic to me
RIGHT!? Janis was absolutely amazing!!! Like I literally got chills during the Someone Gets Hurt reprise😅 also I like the addition of technology in this. Most people hated it since the og didn’t have that much technology, but it is wayy more realistic nowadays
I showed up for Angourie (and was kinda disappointed 😅) but stayed for Renee, Avantika, and Auli'i
The callbacks to the OG were fun too. Loved seeing Tim and Tina, though I kinda wished they brought back more of the cast but Lindsay's scene was fun.

I feel really bad for Angourie. She's a really good actress but was clearly just not the right casting for this part.

I think people are mad about the changes they made to her songs and that's why Janis is getting overlooked a little. Cause I felt the same as you lol she sounds amazing
I always loved Aulii more as Janis, but that maybe because I'm not a fan of Barett anyway. But also cause she is an amazing singer. I prefer the character in the stage and original movie version, but the singing is on point.

I really like that, in this version, they committed to Janice being queer. The actress that plays her is amazing! Love new Janice!
I LOVED this movie’s style and how it went full musical camp while also putting up barriers between symbolism and reality. I was outwardly giggling in the theater at the campiest moments. Some choices were just really impressive, in my opinion. I also watched it behind a row of high school girls there for a birthday, so we were ALL having the time of our lives.
About the French version of ICarly theme song, as a French person, here's another thing funny about it. The translation is bad. You know when you put something in Google translate, and it gives weird results cause the structure of sentences are not the same, or because they use phrases that can't be translated directly? Well that's exactly it, and probably totally what would do a student who wants to sound cool speaking another language but doesn't know how to speak it. (and also probably what did the movie writers lol)
Didn't think of Regina's music as Halloweenie.
She sounds like she's doing a James Bond theme. Like, "someone gets hurt" is like a catchier version of Skyfall.

As a fan of the stage show I found this movie incredibly disappointing. It felt like a musical movie that didn't want to be a musical. The people who made this movie sucked out all the Broadway feel from the original show in order to appeal to a crowd who don't like musicals and it resulted in a movie that nobody liked.

I really liked this movie because i love the Broadway show and it is different but its the closest I can get to watching the musical at home and its fun. But i feel like everyone is hating on it because its not the same as the original and they didn’t do research about the musical so they went in with expectations that didn’t make sense for what the movie is. Was the movie amazing? No. Was it as good as the stage musical? Hell no. Was it as good as the original? No. But it was still good and it was fun
I know a lot of people don't like this movie but personally, it wasn't that bad!! renee really stood out and made regina her own.
Considering that it had good reviews from both the audience and the critics, as well as good box office performance, I think bad reactions were mostly performative.

Prior to the new film I knew next to nothing about the musical, but I love the original and count it among my top 15 or 20 films of all time. I loved this new version. It did some things worse than the original, sure, but it did a lot better. The cast was great, the songs were bops, and ultimately I think it achieves everything it sets out to do.

I introduced my 2 younger brothers (ages 18 and 19) to Mean Girls a few years ago and we still quote it to this day. We all agreed that the musical is enjoyable and different enough that there is no need to compare it religiously to the original. We went in with 0 expectations and enjoyed it for what it was.
Since you like musicals, you should check out Matilda The Musical! Again, i went in with 0 expectations and was genuinely surprised at how much i liked it. I'd have to rewatch the original to confirm but I think I like the Musical better.

You should check out the stage show! (there are a few 'slime tutorials' floating around on youtube.) Three people to look out for are Erika Henningsen as Cady (who is also the voice of Charlie in Hazbin Hotel), Barrett Wilbert Weed as Janice (who is also the original Veronica in Heathers the Musical), and Ashley Park as Gretchen (who has done a lot of comedy recently, and also cameoed as the French teacher in this movie version.) It's really good. I also really enjoyed this version, but I think a lot of stuff got lost in translation to film. The biggest fauxpas was the musical arangements, which are just so, SO much more alive and bombastic in the stage production. Janice's "I'd Rather Be Me" solo at the end, and all of Regina and Cady's numbers also just sound so much better with the original arrangements. Auli'i was amazing, but the movie versions of these songs don't do her any justice.
The one thing I really wish was that they didn’t take out/change the songs from the stage show so much. Overall it’s a fun movie, but the songs fall a bit short.
Like Stupid With Love is completely different. In the movie, Cady is calm and dreamy while in the musical she is very upbeat and acts like a girl with a major crush.
You should definitely listen to the musical soundtrack to hear the differences!

Definitely check out the OBC album. They did these songs dirty, especially Stupid with Love and Apex Predator. They also cast Jaquel and then removed both of Damian's songs, which is heinous. But Auli'i made this entire damn movie worthwhile.

I love this version of World Burn and Someone Gets Hurt. But the Broadway version of Apex Predator is better (Don't get me wrong, I love Damian and Janis' voices in the movie version. It's more the arrangement.)
I like Apex Predator in the original more..but I mainly think it’s the music itself. I actually liked that Damien and Janis sang Cady’s parts since Cady doesn’t really know much about Regina at that point

No disrespect to the actress, but I feel that Cady's singing and performance drag down the movie a lot for me. I liked Janis, Damien, Regina, even Karen was fine. But Cady just felt a bit stoic to me, maybe it was bad direction. I do like the songs otherwise and I think the cast did a good job with what they had.

Unpopular opinion!! I actually prefer this one over the original lol even though this one was so random with the singing I expected it to be more self aware when they get into the musical numbers but besides that everything else was good tbh even the acting

ngl I'm not the biggest fan of this movie. I like some of the individual elements, but there are far more choices I don't like, especially in comparison to the original musical. (cut/added/changed songs, some of the casting, etc.) That being said, your enjoyment of it made me appreciate it more. I hope you get a chance to watch the stage production one day. Even if it doesn't make it into a video, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

I love Auliʻi Cravalho and she's charismatic as anything and yes her big song number is as fantastic as it is hypocritical, but the fictional character of Janis is a pretty terrible person, every bit as villainous as Regina even if she is self-serving, manipulative and bullying in different less overt ways.

I don't know why, but I feel this Regina was lacking the same meanness that the OG Regina had.....unless this is how nowadays the hs queen bee (oh god, it has been almost 25 years since I was in hs). Still a good movie, the OG still rules for me, but then again....personal bias/nostalgia.
I think Rachel’s Regina was more of a shady mean while Renee’s Regina is more in your face mean

I quite liked this adaptation despite the OMG being more iconic. I did love the musical numbers and to me Regina, Janis, and Damian stole the entire film!!! I really do wish we could’ve heard Damian do Stop, but I was glad he at least got his man. Yes the bathroom scene was deleted in the original, so I was glad they kept it. My favorite songs is obviously Revenge Party, Apex Predator, I’d Rather Be Me and all of Regina George’s songs especially I Want To Watch The World Burn.
