- "... when I was sixteen or seventeen years old, I went to see Buddy Holly play at Duluth National Guard Armory and I was three feet away from him ... and he looked at me.” -Bob Dylan
Back in March, Stephie and I were scheduled to play a set for the Buddy Holly Foundation in Austin during South By but we all know what happened there.
Our longtime friend from the Bug Music days, David Hirshland, who is on the board of the Foundation, invited us to play a set. So we were immersing ourselves in Buddy Holly at the time. And now in lockdown, Buddy’s music has once again come to our emotional rescue.
I hope we can attend next year in 2021. Either way, the Buddy Holly Educational Foundation is doing god’s work, sponsoring retreats for young songwriters and inner-city youth. I mean, the next Buddy Holly is probably in his basement on a laptop cranking out something futuristic.
But Buddy himself was plenty futuristic. And a singing, playing, writing, PRODUCING quadruple threat. Don’t let the nerdy exterior fool ya. He packed a pistol. And wasn’t afraid to set it on the table when he settled with the promoter at the end of the night. He’s a hero. His guitar playing, his rhythmic feel, the hiccups!
Not exactly an inner-city dude. Definitely from the outskirts of the outskirts: the boondocks of Lubbock, TX. But just before his life was cut short, he had moved with his young bride to an apartment in Greenwich Village, where he worked intensively with string arrangers and took acting lessons. He even got his teeth fixed. His future was wide open.
February 3, 1959 was the day the music died. Or did it?
If all Buddy ever did was put the Fender Stratocaster on the map, we'd still owe him. And like all the great ones, he was more than a musician, he was an inventor, a magician. He could take the 1-4-5 chord progression anywhere. He turned it inside out seemingly endlessly.
Pro tip: If you click on the video, play it loud. Thanks to our colorist Lauren Taback for the editing. Scott Compton for the fancy camera. And Tommy Dunbar for sprucing up the joint.
