Janice, thank you so much for the "shout out" and kind words about my UA-cam channel, "Postcards From My Golden Years". 😍Yes, my remaining months, (just 229 days til our move, but who's counting!) here in the USA, have become totally absorbed with research on every facet of retiring to France. Your video was very interesting. Glad to hear you didn't need a bank account and it sounds like your rental process was easier than most that I've heard about. Just goes to show you that, as you said, every landlord/management co does it differently---and patience, yes patience. I learned all about that while working on opening our France bank account from the US. Took us over a month of paperwork and conversation--and it still won't be finished till we meet with the banker in Nice, in person, to finalize everything. And you made a great point about not living near a bus stop. We hadn't thought about that. All the best.... Looking forward to meeting you in November!
And now you all are relocated to France! Félicitations! I am so looking forward to coming back [“home”] to France! I’m just not entirely sure where I really want to be based. But I DO “parle français.” 😮 ☺️🎉
This is one vid I’m revisiting, to get myself in the know of how-to, as a couple of years rolled since making plans to visit, in order to embark on yet another expat journey, to beautiful, romantic and historically splendorous France. Janice , listening to you has been refreshing and quite helpful. Thank you!
I just found your channel about a week ago and really enjoy it. I’ve visited France 8 times and looking forward to another visit. We seem to have several things in common besides the love of France. Like you, I’m a retired schoolteacher, having taught in Louisiana and Texas. I’m from SW Louisiana where I taught for 20 years then moved to Tomball, Texas and taught for 11 years. We retired to Lake Sam Rayburn, north of Jasper, Texas. I have French relatives who live in Bourgogne and have vineyards. It’s so delightful to visit them and have them visit us. We also have Home Exchange friends that have become like family, including friends in Paris, Nîmes, Bordeaux, and Bretagne. I’ve never been to Fontainebleau. It looks like a charming town. I think we probably had the same church upbringing when you mentioned in one of your videos about going twice on Sunday plus Wednesday.😀. We’ve enjoyed going to church while in France. Like you, I definitely have a southern accent. French people tell me that I’m easier for them to understand because I speak slowly. So hurray for the southern drawl! I look forward to watching more of your videos.
Thank you for sharing our @coastalfamilyvacation respite vacation program for SC residents fighting cancer. Thank you Janice! We loved our day with you in Fontainebleau.
Vraiment sage advice Ms Janice! Very similar to finding a place anywhere…except to know that French rental processes aren’t standardized so drop your expectations for things being the same from place to place.
Watching this again! I also agree about An’s videos on renting. I’m hoping to follow closely behind her. I’m also going to be working with Adrian to help with getting settled!
Thanks for this video and tour of your apartment. You live in a beautiful neighborhood…I love the views from your windows! Sending love from New Jersey ❤
Janice, Great overview and resources. BTW it would be a good idea to get some filming tips. It was difficult to watch the new apartment tour. I actually felt some motion sickness at one point and it wasn’t easy to watch or get a good idea of the place.
I’ve had so much going on and we’re trying to make this video so much better than the last one, and a little loss here in the family and my editor is having trouble with the Internet. So all in all we’re supposed to have a video go out on March 30th and I’m still hopeful, but it may be the next week. Thank you so much for asking. I really really appreciate it.
I also follow An with Postcards from my Golden Years, and she does have a wealth of information. I’m thinking finding an apartment in Nice is very competitive and Adrian was instrumental in finding it. My concern is if the landlords will keep raising prices every year or in the summer. Maybe more common on the French Riviera?
Very informative video. We were in Greece last year where my parents live. We also visited Paris for a couple of days. We are planning to move to Greece or France in the future or going back and forth to each country so this was helpful. We love Europe! I lived in Greece for 8 years and want to get back to Europe soon! Love your pets, we had a Shihtzu, miss him. Lot's of love to you Janice xx

Dear Janice, I just came across your channel and I believe it was for a reason! I love your videos. Your apartment is nice and cozy. I dream of one day living in France and hope to visit one day soon. My question is about the language barrier, do you recommend being completely fluent or know just enough to get by?

Hi Janice! Kind of off topic and maybe you have covered this in another video (I just found you), but I'm wondering how much French you knew before moving and if you are actively taking French lessons now that you are there? Also if you didn't have a large French vocabulary prior to moving, was it difficult to do everything that needed to be done with your VISA when you 1st arrived? My husband and I are retired educators (too!) and we're making our move next year at this time! We are trying to learn a bit of French in the year that we have and plan to continue learning once we arrive. Really am enjoying your videos!
You’ll be happy to know I knew nothing of French when I arrived. When you do your visa work in the states of course it’s all in English you don’t do anything until after you’ve been here for three months and then you will go on the computer and do everything in it is also in English. They will ask you do you want emails in English or French so therefore they will give you an email in English and in French. I live in Fontainbleau as you may or may not know and I have found it not difficult nor have I found it difficult in France to get around at all people know French some people know a little English it’s OK we all get along and hand signs are fabulous. Let me know if there’s anything I can help you with
